User Content
As buzzwordy as Web 2.0 is, end-user content is rapidly becoming the majority of the visible end-user internet experience (e.g. Digg, MySpace, Facebook, etc.) With thousands/millions of users posting content, XSS filters start to become an arms race against the latest techniques. With Internet Explorer even rendering code with as valid code. Even when filters are put into place, all it takes is one XSS virus to take down an entire website.
Even disabling Javascript content all together in websites, with user content, other methods can be used to steal cookies/sessions/user credentials. Flash attacks are becoming more and more common, and are near impossible to protect against. Users demand dynamic user-driven content, the companies comply, I'm just surprised this hasn't been more prevalent.

Re:Buckle Up
or somehow account for approximately 60 tons of missing aircraft debris at the Pentagon.
Huh?
Let's take a step back for a moment:
1. There were dozens upon dozens of eyewitness reports who say that a commercial jetliner was what crashed into the Pentagon. These were all just ordinary people, going about their business in the DC area, some affiliated with government and/or miltary, some not. Of the witnesses who say it "sounded" like a missile (note the word "sounded"): how is that even relevant? I ask because of the obvious: how many of these people even know what a missile "sounds" like? How many people have heard a commercial jetliner just hundreds of feet (and at some point, tens of feet) off the ground travelling at ~400-500mph? And to repeat, many, many, many people reported directly seeing an American Airlines commercial jetliner.
2. All of the "conspiracy" reports talk about how "no wreckage" was found at the scene. That is patently false. There was TONS of Boeing 757 wreckage recovered, in total, from the Pentagon. Ironically, here are even large pieces of 757 wreckage visible in the photos used to try to "prove" there was no wreckage! Not to mention that the air disaster photos picked for the video were no doubt picked because there WAS wreckage.
3. Remains 184 of 189 of the victims aboard flight 77 were identified AT THE SCENE from DNA: http://www.dcmilitary.com/army/stripe/6_48/nationa l_news/12279-1.html
4. The ONLY place I've EVER seen any claims about supposed video from the Sheraton, gas stations, etc., is in the internet flash video. I have seen no reference or proof ANYWHERE else, from ANY source, that videos have supposedly been confiscated "minutes" later by the FBI.
5. Also, stop and think about this: where was the (visible) "wreckage" from the WTC towers? Is the only reason we even believe that commercial planes crashed into the towers is because we were able to see it with our own eyes? And even that isn't enough for the conspiracy theorists: they still claim that the WTC towers were *rigged with explosives*, such that they could be made to fall AFTER jetliners rammed into the buildings!
For a detailed analysis, see:

And finally, you might be interested in a test done years ago at Sandia National Laboratory, in which an F-4 was crashed into a concrete wall. Not a 757 and not the Pentagon, but I'd implore you to find any recognizable "wreckage":

Here you go- links to USB 802.11 drivers...
ZyDas provided an open source driver for their
USB 802.11G chips.
Ralink appears to have done the same thing.
Since the drivers are still somewhat in their infancy, your mileage may vary, but it appears that both vendors (Which comprise many of the USB thumb sized adapters out there...) have stepped up to the plate and provided source and technical data to back it up with. There's been decent reports of usability with the Hawking model using ZyDas' chipset. At least for now, devices like the Hawking HWU54G adapter are largely supported in some mode that is remotely usable. I suspect that by the end of year that the driver sets for these two vendors' chips will end up in the kernel proper. -
** THERE'S HOPE !! **
Before you throwing in the towel, check out the following website:
http://zd1211.ath.cx/
(It used to be hosted at http://zd1211.sourceforge.net/ before moving to this new site.)
This project was started a while back to support the ZyDAS ZD1211 chipset in Linux. As it states on the site, the code was originally donated by ZyDAS. Sometime last year, I managed to contact their tech support and request another kind gesture to the open source community. A few emails later, they released an update to their original code. If I'm not mistaken, the version at the project's website has incorporated the improvements made in the company's updated code. The ZD1211 project also has a list of USB adapters that carry the ZD1211 chipset.
After checking out the project's website, check out the vendor's page as they have been keeping up with their pledge of helping out the open source community by releasing updated drivers. As a bonus, they have also released an updated **WPA Supplicant**. Enjoy fellow /.'ers!!
ZyDAS' ZD1211 download page:
http://www.zydas.com.tw/downloads/download-1211.as p
Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with ZyDAS. I just believe it is commendable that a company responded to a request to support the open source community and is actively doing so by publishing updated drivers.
Good luck to us all! -
zd1211
There are quite a lot of USB 802.11b/g dongles out there containing the zydas zd1211 chipset, which has a reasonably active GPL development effort based at http://zd1211.ath.cx/, including ongoing work from the manufacturers, and aiming eventually for inclusion in the main kernel tree. My company has had a lot of success using devices with this chipset under linux.

Want drivers to improve? Vote with your money.
I recently bought a Zyxel ZyAIR G-220, for the sole reason that Zyxel open sourced their drivers. They are not to pretty, and it took me about 4 hours to get it to work (mostly due to unrelated compile errors), but it works fine.
If you want drivers to improve, then show companys that do make linux drivers for their wireless cards that you support them, and buy their hardware. Zyxel opened up their drirers, and a soureforge projet was setup to improve them. http://zd1211.ath.cx/ -
My way. Sort of:A simple javascript function which I use on all of my AJAX Apps will create an XMLHttpRequest object in just about every major browser. Excuse the horrible bastardization of exceptions. From the looks of the article they are using something quite similar.
function createXMLHttpRequest() {
try { return new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP"); } catch(e) {}
try { return new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } catch(e) {}
try { return new XMLHttpRequest(); } catch(e) {}
alert("XMLHttpRequest not supported");
return null;
} -
low tech AJAX solution
While you're waiting for this to show up, there's a realtime way of doing this in AJAX now: AJAX translator, and I could see this making it's way in a website, or forum to provide the same 'on the fly' translation of text. With all that's been done with the internet, it's still pretty segmented in terms of languages; this would open up that knot.

Re:Ah, the age-old battle
I agree with many of the statements that Linus made. I have been GNOME-faithful for 2 years and features disapear ALL of the time! Examples:
The Open Terminal in the right-click menu on the desktop.. required a hack to get it back and many other right click functionality on the desktop and in Nautilus. I can't seem to remember what is missing anymore because they are GONE!
Overall, I tried KDE and it's so-so. I can't get used to using it, I feel like many people in the community, it has toooo many options and other stuff. I happen to enjoy the look and feel of GNOME but hate it when they remove shit that I use.

Re:Built for Linux
Probably you're right, people gets confused with some many linux distributions. In order to solve that I show them Ubuntu, I tell them use Ubuntu (not linux). Eventually they'll say "Ah! it's linux", but by then they're already in.
I had the same problem with the multimedia stuff, that's until I ask them run Easy Ubunutu after installing ubuntu to get all multimedia codecs you need and much more.
My last conversion occured last friday. A colleague installed Ubuntu on his laptop, it recognized everything the first time, and he's a happy Linux guy now.
Every time I get someone to try Linux I'm amazed on how positive their reaction is.

You can do a much better raytracer with canvas than without it - previously you'd have needed a large table or many divs to display the image, but with canvas the output can actually be drawn properly.

Re:Ubuntu makes me smile!
yeah, totem sucks big time. I use vlc for most of videos I watch. If something doesn't want to work, I try Xine (sometimes it helps). If I need subtitles for some reason, MPlayer is the way to go (it needed some tweaking, though... like adding a default font and changing some setting to make full screen work correctly).
anyways, it's a good idea to run Easy Ubuntu after you install the system. It downloads and installs a lot of proprietary stuff (various audio and video codecs, skype, etc). -

Re:Question....
I can't believe that Apple managed to design, prototype, test, mass produce, market and ship the iPod in 9 months. They did. This article talks about how Apple hired Tony Fadell in early 2001 to begin development of the iPod. They worked with PortalPlayer on the hardware, and developed the software in conjunction with Pixo, Inc. According to this article, Pixo didn't even get the call from Apple until late spring 2001. It was a rushed product because they were so behind in that market, but it turned out to be one of the most successful things they ever did.

These sales, if made in sufficient quantities, will convince them to port more. NATIVE UT2K4, Awesome under Linux. Have not bought Doom3 yet. Waiting on Quake4.
I wish there were no need for Cedega. But until there isn't, I'll use it.

Re:Let's talk about the elephant in the room.
I don't use GIMP on Windows, because on Windows I have Paint Shop Pro, which for what it's worth I believe to be the most underappreciated graphics editing app ever and one of only two apps which I feel justified in paying money for.
I'm not a professional graphics editor, I just use editors casually for vector, raster, web, and (most of the time) photo editing work. I know a bit about various editing and filter features, workflow organizations in different editors, and so on. I know PSP is absolutely amazing in terms of saving my time - last weekend I spent maybe five hours to go from my camera's output to 200 best picks, all retouched to the best of my liking. I know it would take me days to do that in GIMP, considering how disjointed its interface is when it's not the only thing on the desktop and how it doesn't have many of the adaptive filters I was using in PSP. Frankly, I'm sure the same thing would happen for original graphics workflow, since GIMP doesn't have any of the integrated vector features of PSP. But then GIMP obviously has the advantages of being open and running under Linux.
I tried Krita, and found it to be very feature-incomplete. It has far less features than GIMP, and I've already mentioned how many features I think GIMP has. I'm sure that if I spent more time in GIMP I would be able to use it more efficiently, but I think the lack of an MDI is a fundamental shortcoming and I won't invest my time in learning more until I see it fixed or hack up a fix myself (the first month of the first semester of grad school is not the best time to do that, you know...) -
Re:Necessary Evil
Arcanum - I played Arcanum in 4.3 and at least half of the listed issues have been fixed. I guess I am not doing my wiki duty, I will install the game again and update that entry when I get a chance.
Evil Genius, not working due to texturing problems. Also annoyances during install.
Bloodlines works with nVidia, not our fault ati drivers suck.
Call it 1.5/3 since the two that work arent perfect. Not horrible considering the popularity of those games. I am a great collector of obscure RPGs and RTS games, and I do my best to make sure the ones I own are represented in the games database and the support voting. -

Mitsubishi F-2 Versus GodzillaThis scenario presents an ideal opportunity to deploy a squadron of F-2 fighter/bombers to combat Godzilla or the Chinese naval fleet.
The F-2 is the new Japanese frontline fighter and employs stealth technology developed by Japanese engineers. The F-2 is distinctly inferior to the American F-22 but is a source of pride for the Japanese military.
In about 5 years, Tokyo will deploy the new F-2 Super Kai, an improved version of the F-2. The Japanese military has already released pictures of a preliminary model. It should be quite effective an slaying Godzilla or the Chinese military.
The pictures of the F-2 Super Kai are awesome. What's this? I'm salivating.

Ideas for improvements?
Mounting the fan this way would help, but it seems difficult to scale up to multiple drives. On my home system, I have two hard drives in large CD-ROM bays and want to mount one low speed fan that blows air past the drives from the front of the case to the back.
I've jerry-rigged this already with some tape. The CPU temperature dropped by 20F, and the hard drive's temperature dropped to room temperature + 5F. (I also opened up the front of the case which probably helped a lot...)
The problem is that the installation looks terrible, and is noisy, since the fan is exposed to the outside of the case. Also, I don't really trust the tape to hold up over time.
I would like to do something that is more permanent and that is completely internal.
Hard drives have screw holes on the bottom that can be used for mounting, but these holes aren't used by the hard drive brackets that I have.
Perhaps one of them could be used to mount an 80mm fan like this, entirely inside of the case. (Some other case fan would be needed to provide fresh air, but this would make sure that the drives had air-flow.)
Here's the tricky part. I've drawn the fan so that it is flush with the cd-rom and the top of the case. It turns out that standard 80mm fans actually do take up all of the space. So, what type of commonly available, cheap mounting bracket will connect one of the screw holes on the bottom of the drive to the mounting hole on the fan? I think the best way to go is to pick something that will bend, and then use 2-4 of them to keep the fan from moving. Any ideas? -
