Re:Think AntarcticaOne of the things I'd like to see is better (than Windows) old game support in Linux.
.
Let me give you an example. Recently, I got a new PC running Vista. One of the first things I tried to do was install my favorite game, Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines. Now, officially, V:tM:B isn't supported on 64 bit Windows OSs. This is due to an easily corrected programming mistake by Troika as it was going out the door (they were under a lot of pressure, I don't blame them). A kindly hacker has fixed it for us: Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines 64 bit patch
So, the next game I tried to Install was my second favorite System Shock 2. I also had a problem with that due to my Dual Core CPU. So, I had to find another kindly hacker to help me... Game Issues With Multiprocessor/Hyperthreading Systems...
I'm expecting to keep installing old games, because I happen to like them. (Sacrifice is probably up next... well after my Steam games and Dawn of War.)
Now with Wine, you have people dedicated to adding a Windows compatibility layer to Linux. Each individual game you might think of will have an entry in the database, with different levels of success. Wine itself runs in multiple modes, so if one mode doesn't work you can try others. Unfortunately at the moment, it isn't a panacea. Some games work, and some don't. What I'm hoping for in the future is that older games will work better in Wine than the latest Windows, especially games that have a small but loyal fanbase. Because with old games, officialdom doesn't care, we could lose generations of gaming art and they'd just shrug. It's sort of like throwing out all the old books, or trashing all the old movies... (there was a time when that was a problem, a lot of old Ernie Kovacs was recycled for it's silver content... )
Alternatives for a lot of games are also in the works, basically creating Linux native engines to run Windows content. I remember looking for one for Dark Engine games, with no luck, but that was a while back. Of course, maybe I should be following ReactOS's Progress instead, but right now it isn't nearly as desktop ready as Linux and I like Linux better than WinXP, given the choice. Of course, really old games from Infocom and LucasArts tend to have top notch native Linux support, so I have hope.

Re:ASP on Linux
I've been with Brinkster for 4 or so now and I have never had a single problem. Their services are top notch including helpful FAQ's, code samples, great forums, and LIVE customer online or phone support. They are incredible. They offer both Windows or Linux services with just about every feature you could possible ask for. http://www.brinkster.com/

Bought these for my LCD based mame cabinetWhen I first built my mame cabinet I opted for a thin-footprint design using a 17" LCD monitor. http://www20.brinkster.com/mymame
I didn't know at the time that light guns didn't work with LCDs, I'd just honestly never thought of it. Now a few years later, I saw the Topgun guns designed to work with any screen and immediately ordered two. They arrived last friday.
Given the two hours I've been able to play with them, here's what I can tell you so far:
* For use with a PC, the install cd will install the drivers, but did not install any configuration software or instructions on how to get them to work with Mame.
* You *CAN* have two guns plugged in at the same time.
* I have been unable to get past the configuration screen. I can get the laser to come on, shoot in the five locations that configure them, but upon shooting the fifth shot the laser does not turn off.In looking, I did see that the manufacturer has a new set of drivers and software out, hopefully I'll get around to installing and testing this weekend. As for the design, the gun ROCKS! Good weight, feel, design. If you have kids, spray paint it orange. Personally, I like the realistic look.

Re:No recordings go into public domain until 2067!
That's what I first thought, but then I read some more. Guess what. It's basically correct.
See also:
http://www22.brinkster.com/paradio/pages/pre1972.h tm
http://www.legallanguage.com/lawarticles/Clarida00 7.html
It seems there are three points here:
1)before 1972, copyright laws were governed by state regulations, not
national regulations.
2)Merely because they are not covered by federal copyright laws
doesn't imply that they are still owned by someone. The owners may be
dead, or the original master unavailable. I don't understand the
implications here.
3)It's unclear to me whether you can use a later phonograph/CD of an
earlier recording to digitalize. For example, if I had a 1976
phonograph of a 1933 work, and then I decide to make an mp3 of it,
it's unclear to me when it will go into the public domain.
Interestingly, they have already resolved the reproduction issue in
the area of paintings and public domain in USA.
After doing web research, I wrote here
http://www.imaginaryplanet.net/weblogs/idiotprogra mmer/?p=83398276
Accurate photographs of visual artworks lack expressive content and
are automatically in the public domain once the painting's
copyright
has expired (which it has in the US if it was published before 1923).
All other copyright notices can safely be ignored.
I can't comment on precedent or how to implement this fairly, but it
seems to me that we need some sort of public domain reform that
removes protection of later digitally remastered copies when the term
on an earlier recording expires. As long as the later digitally
remastered copy is simply a faithful reproduction of the earlier work,
the later digitally remastered work does not imply some new copyright
protections.
As I said, this idea is currently unworkable and would be unfair to
companies which in the 1970s and 1980s produced and sold remastered
editions. However, at some point we need to ask ourselves why
Columbia Records deserves this windfall for simply reproducing an
artistic work. If Columbia Records, for example, owns the only
pristine copy of Jelly Roll Morton's 1926 jazz songs and releases a
remastered edition in 1985, it would be sad to think it won't go into
the public domain until 2080 (150 years after the song was first
recorded).
Please, somebody, point out some gap in my understanding or a
loophole. But otherwise it looks as if it's going to be really hard
for sound recordings to go into the public domain. -
Re:linux?
The method that the Firingsquad article describes is for Windows only, because it relies on the RivaTuner utility.
RivaTuner is nice because it provides a convenient GUI for playing around with different configurations easily, and I would definitely recommend going that route first of all, to find out which pipelines and/or vertex shaders can be enabled on your particular card.
After any configuration change one should test it thoroughly with a bunch of shader intensive 3D apps (like HalfLife 2, Doom 3, 3DMark03/05 and the rthdribl demo). If you don't get any artifacts or stutters then you can use the info you got from the RivaTuner method for another one which works in Linux too.
See instead of using RivaTuner, you can also unmask pipelines and vertex shaders directly in the BIOS of your 6800(LE/NU/GT/Ultra) card. The advantage is that they will be enabled as soon as your card powers up. As such they'll work in any OS you boot, and they'll keep working if you move the card to another PC.
Unfortunately I don't really know about any nice walkthroughs for the BIOS method but have a look at this page (click on the link for 'iron cobra') for some pointers. If you're confident enough to feel that you should be trying this then that should be all you need. It works fine for me.. and in Linux too. -
Like Risk? Try Diplomacy. If you like alliances and political intrigue in Risk, I heartily recommend Diplomacy. Simultaneous movements (everyone moves at once) make for some very interesting situations. There are all sorts of resources online for Diplomacy: I've played with people all over the world at Diplomacy 2000, and I've never even owned a board. There are quite a few open source boards/adjucators (they do the logic behind the moves to determine movement success/failure). Of those, I recommend jDip, a feature-rich cross-platform java version.
The game can get a bit involved, and there's a slight learning curve (very slight, especially if you've done Axis & Allies). Not for everyone, but it's worth a try if you like Risk. -
What system are you running?
If you're running Windows, the easiest thing to run ASP in is IIS if you're on XP/2000, or its little brother PWS on Win9X/ME. (They're free for playing around with.) Note: Neither is available for XP Home.

Re:Hmm
Isn't stenography just more "security through obscurity", like using an odd ip-port to hide a service?
No, it is not. You can put any data you want in there and then password protect it.
However, if the original image is obtainable then it is possible to compare the two to decipher the data.
But then again, who says your hidden data can't be an encrypted, compressed file? -
Re:Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice in C
why not go ahead and get the master work on algorithms, Numerical Recipes, which is now available in C,C++, and Fortran versions. This, just like your suggestion, is hardcore programmers brainfood, not fluff.
I don't know if that was supposed to be funny. If you were serious, I'd like to strongly dissuade you from using NR in production code. Don't get me wrong - NR is an excellent teaching aid and it's excellent for getting the concept. It's a very good book to read in an advanced undergrad course on numerical techniques, but please don't use it in production code. For one thing, the C version is a bad hack of the Fortran version, which means that all subscripts run from 1 to N, instead of 0 to N-1, and all arrays are one element longer than they need to be, with the array[0] element not being used. For another, some chapters leave a lot to be desired. In my personal experience, the functions to solve partial differential equations were badly designed (they assume you have Dirichlet boundary conditions throughout, without allowance for Neumann or mixed).
You should read reviews like this one before you advocate NR.
Summary: NR discusses the algorithms well, and it's written in an eminently readable style. Its code however is not production grade, and should not be used if you have any better libraries. -
Re:Data Interchange with Open File FormatsDon't get me wrong. I like OOo and its open formats as well. While I have not tried to interface MSOffice with Postgres (yet), it can retrieve, and output to, pretty much any ODBC compliant db you wish.
As far as triggering some Office task with a cron job, that is an inherent tool within SQLServer, or for a free, 3rd party tool, there is HAL(HandyAccessLauncher). Runs an Access mdb, whenever you want, with whatever commandline or internal commands you choose. Not perfect, but it does work. I use this to spit out a weekly report to Payroll. I'm sure there are other ways to do the same.

Sharepod is lots easier
This is easy. Download Sharepod. It's an executable and two DLL files. Stick those files on your iPod in the root directory.
Plug the iPod into anyone's computer, navigate to it via explorer, and double-click the SharePod executable. Voila. You now have a nice, GUI-driven way to copy one, some, or all of the songs off of the iPod onto that computer.
Easy. Portable. Takes up a megabyte or two on your iPod. Works on any PC into which you can plug your iPod. -
Re:I don't understandMaybe because "Managed C++" and "ISO C++" are two entirely different languages? Sure, they may have some syntax in common, but they have almost nothing in terms of purpose, design philosiphy or capibilities in common.
Yeah, but this story was about the C++/CLI language which (unlike "Managed C++"!) is supposed to be compatible with C++ -- until you use one of the
.NET-specific extensions, something which will happen pretty soon, I'm afraid.
One person's positive view here.
I still don't like this at all. Pascal, here we come!

Re:Neuros II
I just got a nokia 6230, with a 512 mmc card off ebay (you can get a gig from mobymemory) and it is a great mp3 player, cell phone, and digital camera in one little box. You have to solder new headphones to get decent sound, but otherwise the quality is fine, and if you get a phone call, you push the button on the wire and it patches the call through.
I've always like the all-in-one gadget idea, and right now the cell phones are the only ones headed in that direction. -
If you like ephod try sharepod
Ephod has to be installed for you to retrieve mp3s and while that may not be a big deal on your home computer you may want to try sharepod which allows you to copy songs from your ipod to your computer without any installation. Useful when dealing with someone else's computer. Here's a link:
Sharepod.
Here's a quote from the page:
" wrote this program because none of my friends have an iPod, so of course don't have Ephpod/iTunes or similar installed on their computers. With SharePod, nothing needs to be installed, the program is stored and run from your iPod. All you need to do is plug your iPod into a computer and run SharePod.exe SharePod reads your iPod database and allows you to extract music files to your hard drive, either individually or by playlist. You can also create Winamp playlists from the music on your iPod so you can listen to it without needing to copy the mp3 files to your computer. If you are on a network, (e.g. at work/university) and you share the iPod drive on the network, other users can run your copy of SharePod from their own computers, and download music directly from your iPod! This allows P2P type music sharing just by plugging in your iPod :) There are several programs out there which do these things and more, but are required to be installed on each computer first, or require large supporting files to be downloaded, which is a pain when round at a friends house. VB source code is also available" -
iPodLoungeI doubt the book contains anything that can't be found trivially at the iPodLounge
For example, their compendium of software includes:
A workaround for EU volume limitation
Ripping, encoding and tagging recommendations.
A utility to mass export Outlook contacts
News and Weather syndication downloaders.
By far the best way to retrieve your MP3s (a utility that sits on your iPod itself and is executable over a network!)
The fantastic iPod Agent, which creates beautiful XML music lists as well as performing loads of useful functionsEvery other area of the lounge is equally as exhaustive - from iTunes configuration (you can do amazing things with smart playlists!) to headphones and case reviews. Visit the site instead of buying a book.
(Oh, and I'm in no way involved with the Lounge other than being a fan.)

Re:You have to look at the both sides equation
Congradulations. You are either the most dead-pan straight man or the most humour impared individual I have encountered in a long time.
Either way, I will play along.
I was joking.
See, He is a noble gas, so a "molecule" of He is only one atom. That makes it about 10% the density of air (3/30, with liberal rounding and assuming He, N2 & O2 all act roughly like ideal gases).
That means that a given volume helium gas will be quite a bit lighter than an equal volume of air. If you put some in a balloon it would rise up because it weighs less than the air it displaces.
Note that I said "weighs less," not "masses less". This is a key part of the joke. See, mass is a nice clean concept, because if you ignore relativistic effects it doesn't depend on the circumstances under which it is measured. Weight, on the other hand, isn't an intrinsic property of matter, but rather a measure of the force pulling the object towards the surface of (generally) the earth. All sorts of things can confound a measurement of "weight". But the article specifically used a measure of weight (pounds) instead of mass (newtons, grams, whatever).
See where this is going?
If you were to try to measure the weight of some helium using the normal put-it-on-a-scale technique, you would have to add weight to get to zero. So, the weight would apear to be negative if you discounted the boyancy from the displaced air. But (here comes the punch line)...
There's no air on the moon.

Unfortunately, Radeons are not well supported.
... as open source drivers are non-existant. As far as video cards are concerned, your best bets are NVidia and Matrox. You can get linux support for the card however in two ways. First of all, use the VESA video driver in X11 instead of the Radeon driver. (change the driver line in
/etc/X11/XF86Config to "vesa" from "radeon") This is a good stopgap measure, but it lacks support for the full set of features.
The second method is to use the binary drivers from Schneider-Digital.
To provide maximum compatibility, the driver is built partially from source. So you must follow these instructions in order to successfully install it. It shouldn't be too difficult as you have a recent version of Mandrake, so your kernel should be already ready to go, without need of patches. If you get stuck, this fellow has written a mini-HOWTO to help you along.
You aren't on your own... you have Slashdot!
Now stop repeat-posting your bitching and GET TO WORK, oh, and we would appreciate another mini-HOWTO documenting your effort so we have another model to work from, and we can learn from your mistakes. Your slashdot journal will suffice if you don't want to weaken the theme on your webpage. Thanks. ;-) -
Re:What kind of hardware is needed...
I can't seem to get my acconut on slashdot to work, but a little mire info for you. There is a Patch for the PS2Linux kit's Kernel that will allow you to actully mount the memory card and give you access to it proper. If you have the linux kit and the patch, you don't need the memcard reader. This is cool as now I can use my kit to boot some of my Japanese games.

- The SCUMM VM (already on /. here (Linux SCUMM Interpreter), and here (Lucas Confuses ScummVM With Abandonware).
- The SCUMM Bar, sadly down untill mid-july (but not closed!), is a reference on the genre, with nice interviews with the original developpers of the first games.

Ok, try it. I'm guessing the least like place for a robbery would be about 6 miles under the ocean (near the Mariana Trench, but about 3/4 of a mile from the bottom). Now, remember, you can only rob people -- stealing stuff from buildings and vaults is called burglary. My next least-likely place would be in geostationary orbit around the moon. I'll pay your bail if you get caught.

Actually, his screen shot showed almost 600 listings with the string "MP3" in the title. The auctions actually shown in the capture are for MP3 software, and several old-time radio (OTR) collections. Much of what's out there in OTR-land is no longer protected by copyright (how this differs from "being in the public domain" I'm not quite clear on), but the bottom line is that his page does NOT show a list of clear infringers. -

Re:Don't scream
If you think C# is great then good for you. I for one don't care for a language that lacks the ability to write gui apps or database apps. Both of those are absent unless you are using windows.
What about GTKSharp, Npgsql, MySQL.Net and the list goes on.... it seems to me like you could build a gui database app sans ADO.NET and Windows forms.
The problem with C# is that all the open source code is scattered all over net instead of being in a community repository. There is one at CSAN, but last I checked it had a total of 3 modules. We need a central repository with a consistant namespace. I, for one, am tired of using something like JoesAssemblies.SomeNetworkProtocol when I could be using CSAN.Net.SomeProtocol.
I'm a Perl guy by nature - but I've embraced C# because it's the closest thing to Perl 6 we're going to see for a long time. The only disadvantage with C# is the lack of a huge code library to build your applications on.

4 places that I know of in Brevard County, Florida
Well, I know of 4 anime-related things in Brevard County (Space coast) Florida.
1) Anime Pavilion and Comics - Located in Melbourne, at the shopping center on the intersection of NASA Blvd. and Babcock St. (The shopping center where Makoto's is). They offer anime viewings every Tuesdays at 8:00pm to whenever everybody leaves.
2) Islander Comics and Cards - Located in Merritt Island on Route 3 (Courtenay Parkway) just north of Merritt Island High School. Offers anime viewing every Friday night beginning at 8:00pm.
3) Oukyuu Anime Club - Meets at random locations every Saturday evening and shows basically any kind of anime (even hentai!). To sign up, go to http://www10.brinkster.com/oukyuuanime. It's mainly headquartered in Melbourne, but we sometimes meet in Palm Bay.
4) Florida Institute of Technology Anime Club - During the semester, we meet every Thursday night at 8:00pm in Room 137 of the Olin Engineering Complex. First half-hour or so is about club-related events, then after that we watch anime. You do not have to be a Florida Tech student to show up.
There are probably a few more frequent anime events, but I'm not too sure. Also, it wouldn't hurt to attend conventions. For example, Jacon, Megacon, FITCON, Anime Express, Anime Festival Orlando, etc. They usually have extended anime showings and last until the con closes for the night. Oh and, if you're a big time cosplayer, you should consider attending the Cosplay Summer Camp (Read more). -

I hope sooo, I haven't thought about that game in at least 10 years.... wow! thanks (even if it isn't a reference). When will someone make an online game of that one... -
Don't they have anything better to do?
I am sure lawmakers find it real sexy (and electorally worthwhile) to make laws about protecting kids from the monsters you can find on that dark and dangerous internet. The fact is that in most cases kids are abused by people they know: "The majority of all children countable under the Harm Standard (78%) were maltreated by their birth parents, and this held true both for children who were abused (62% were maltreated by birth parents) and for those who were neglected (91% experienced neglect by birth parents)" (source Third National Incidence Study Of Child Abuse And Neglect. The NCCAN has a good number of reports on the subject of abused chikdren BTW.
So before spending energy, money and public attention in a law that will impact a very small number of cases maybe it would be wise to focus on more important dangers, and find ways to better protect kids from dangerous parents, priests (I know, it's a cheap shot
;--), soccer coaches... while still allowing them to live a normal kid life and not succomb to Paranoia. There is no 100% safe society (nor is it desirable to have one), so we have to pick our fights and try to improve it where it really makes a difference, not just where it looks good in a press release.

Your coolness factor could drop a lot...
if you actually did more than talk about your cool new iPod and showed your friends your "cool" new iPod.

You feel lucky today punk.
Are you confident about that.
Have you ever hear a little thing call nimda? Are your virus definitions current? Does it scan your Internet Temporary Files automatically? Do you like to live dangerously? Why not put these little numbers in your IE browser 24.219.119.125. THIS SITE IS INFECTED WITH NIMDA, SO IF YOU USE IE AND KNOW WHAT IS GOOD FOR YOU DO NOT GO HERE
If your a bit curious what can happen, when your virus definition is current then go hear. On the Brink. You may notice that there is no pic of the download dialog box popping up, because it doesn't. This is an eml file and it is safe, right ;^P
For a laugh check out another post on this thread by me about a friend of mine who did not have current definitions for his AV.
It's fourty below and I don't give a ....
