Re:Ehhh Meh
The number of floating point operations (FLOPS) performed by a next-generation game console outranks early days supercomputers like the Cray.
Cray-2 = 1.9 GFLOPS

Dreamcast | CPU: 1.4 GFLOPS | GPU: 0.1 GFLOPS | Combined: 1.5 GFLOPS
PS2 | CPU: 6 GFLOPS | GPU: 0 GFLOPS | Combined: 6 GFLOPS
Xbox | CPU: 1.5 GFLOPS | GPU: 5.8 GFLOPS | Combined: 7.3 GFLOPS

Re:Dreamcast
They worked with Sega on an operating system for the Dreamcast, based on Windows CE. According to this list, only 48 of the 688 commercially-released DC games used it.

It gets worse; the source thread refers to it as "Super Mario World" which itself is completely different.

Homebrew Sites have mostly gone to the wall
Even sites like http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/ and http://dreamcast.dcemu.co.uk/ these days are struggling because the vast majoriity of users have left these consoles behind and new consoles just arent getting hacked like they used to and the likes of Nintendo etc release so may updates that it seems genuine homebrewers dont stand a chance, hacking of consoles for pirating however is as strong as ever.

Re:Allready copying Nintendo
??
It ran wince but it is not a part of the console. The Dreamcast doesn't have an internal operating system. That came depending on what came on the game discs it booted from and only a tiny fraction of games employed wince. Interesting of note out of all Dreamcast's library of games (which is small already) there is not one top title which uses wince.
List of wince games here:
http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/threads/43804-WinCE-games-List
You could easily build up a collection of A-B rated titles without having any that use wince.

Will your debut album hit 1000?
Why would you sell on CDR?
If you're a new artist, without the major labels' promotion machine and unsure that you can sell 1000 copies, then the CD replication companies will switch you from "replication" (1000 or more on CDs stamped from a glass master) to "duplication" (fewer than that on CD-R). You can't just wait for 1,000 orders before your replication run, as PayPal and other payment processors want merchants to ship within 20 days.

Re:Dreamcast dev kit
I would love it.... but alas I am more of a collector then a dev, my skills are laughable at best....
Anyway yes it should go to some one who would use it, there are a ton of people here who would probably sell some body part to get something like that.

Epic quality of the failure not just epic quantity
where exactly is the ps3 a top seller? not here: http://media.arstechnica.com/news.media/npd-1108-a.png
M$ "me-too" entry in the console market continues in last place, sixth out of six as of August 2009:
- 01 Nintendo Wii - 95,357
- 02 Nintendo DS - 85,737
- 03 PlayStation Portable - 33,049
- 04 PlayStation 3 - 8760
- 05 PlayStation 2 - 3617
- 06 Xbox 360 - 3552
PS2, PSP, and PS3 fluctuate a bit, but Wii keeps climbing albeit not steadily.
The Red Ring o Death we all passed in the stores whenever Xbox was on display is only minor compared to the quality and duration of the eipc failure. The M$ console hardware failures have been around forever, on about as long as the unit has been on the market. It's not just bricked units and years of scotched discs. It's been four or five years of property damage and even occasional injury and death, with fires in many countries.
But, hey, if defective M$ hardware burns down your family, it's your fautlt. To be fair M$ is right about that: The buyers were warned in prior to purchase by the M$ brand clearly marked on the packaging. C'mon, M$ hardware is as poor as M$ software. The fault lies with those who decided to deploy xbox instead of one of the top-selling game consoles like Wii, PS2, or PS3.
Games are optional. Other activities are not. At some point families will ask the courts to ask how hospitals decided to deploy M$ products like C#-based gewgaws or for-novelty-purposes-only systems like XP on the desktop or server instead of functinal Java- or Python-based applications or systems actually designed for a networked environemnt, such as Solaris and Linux. The Microsofot brand is a warning, those who ignore that warning and deploy the product anyway are in the wrong. Multiple counts of { voluntary | criminally negligent } manslaughter. Who goes to the gas chamber, the techs deploying the known defective technology or the administrators who bullied them into doing so? "Just following orders" is not a valid defense for any politically motivated group, even one with heavy marketing and lobbying.

Re:Dear AMD, intel, nVidia, etc
It's a big step in the right direction. I had been hoping to answer the other question but it looked like it was going to be too hard to find information on an embedded GPU core (like for cellphones and stuff.) I wonder what's in the GP2x Wiz

John Strout's HexInput
As others have already said, using sliding motion(s) for touch based typing is nothing new. One of the methods I haven't seen mentioned in the comments yet is the QUONG layout, or HexInput (has nothing to do with hexadecimal). The thing about HexInput is the hexagon shaped softkeys arranged in a honeycomb pattern, wich gives surrounded keys 6 easily available neighbours for sliding onto.
I tried it once on my DS, using BLARGH Text Editor. After a few practice rounds, I could touch type a lot faster than with traditional tapping based touch typing.
However, as my main language is not English, I would need a custom layout for it to be effective for me in everyday situations.

Re:PC games on a big TV
So I can spend half as much (or more) as a new console in order to transform a PC into a tv machine
You have to buy multiple controllers for a console too, and it's still a lot cheaper than buying multiple PCs, monitors, keyboards, and mice for a typical LAN FPS. Besides, you may already own suitable controllers:
- Xbox 360 controllers work in a PC since Windows XP Service Pack 1.
- PS3 SIXAXIS controllers work in a PC with a driver.
- Controllers for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 work through the EMS USB2 adapter ($16).
- Rock Band for Xbox 360 comes with a USB hub so that you can plug more than two controllers into the front of a PC.
and play whichh games that support two or four player on the same screen?
Plenty of EA Sports titles work, as do the official arcade emulators by Atari, Midway, Namco, and Capcom, as well as the titles on this list. And once you're done gaming, you can use the TV to watch YouTube, Hulu, or any other internet video application.
Nah, the console is designed for that environment and as I say, it just works.
If you think HTPC gaming is impractical, then on which platform should an indie developer publish its first party game?

Re:What part of this advertisement is news???
i couldn't load the linked article, but for some reason, this image of the Pandora handheld does seem to be accessible.
and, yes, this is news to a lot of people. personally i'm pretty psyched about a new powerful (and open source) handheld being brought to market. this will be another platform that homebrew developers will be able to explore--and one that they are actually welcomed on. if nothing else, Pandora will finally give consumers a viable alternative to the PSP for a robust portable entertainment system.
i was never too impressed with the GP32 and GP2X, but Pandora looks very promising. in terms of hardware, its 600 MHz clock speed trumps the PSP's 333 MHz (underclocked at 222 MHz on old games), and its 128 MB DDR SDRAM also trounces the PSP/slim's 32/64 MB. we may finally have a portable entertainment system that can surf the web without running out of memory after a few graphic-intensive web pages. a 43 button QWERTY keyboard means e-mail, web browsing, instant messaging, word processing, etc. won't be as troublesome as it is on the PSP. the dual analog nubs also enables more robust game controls, which are particularly important for FPS games.
but what's most exciting about this news is the fact that Pandora was developed with consumers in mind. they designed the handheld based on community feedback on the GP2X/GP32 consoles. i've always felt that the PSP was a fine piece of engineering, but Sony's greed-driven constant mishandling of the system meant that most of the system's hardware potential was never realized.
Pandora seems to take a very different approach. instead of opposing homebrew development, they will tap into the dedication and zeal of the homebrew community to improve the console. this means that rather than wasting time releasing firmware updates just to hinder homebrew development, they will actually incorporate homebrew applications into the console itself. this progressive pro-consumer attitude is something that should be applauded. Pandora shows a lot of potential IMO, and i will be paying close attention to its development.

Additional Info
From what specifics I could find on it, they are planning on supporting Flash 7.0 and I think this means one could play swfs on it (of which I know several addictive games online).
As for other support, I'm kind of disappointed that they went far enough to support Lyrics (Lyc) files but they only support TXT for their E-Books. I would be nice to see Plucker supported by default so that all the Project Gutenberg books would be readily accessible in something better than just plain text. But, I suppose that's just a matter of recompiling for the targeted architecture. I wonder if proprietary e-Book formats will ever be supported on devices like this? That's probably just wishful thinking--why would Amazon divert sales of the Kindle to something like this? -
Re:Dead Link
If you go to the root of the site, it still works:
-
The second game's already out. It's Snake.
I'm just wondering if they'll close this off (running BD-J off of non-disc media) in a forthcoming firmware update...
-
Could it be because...
Custom hacked firmware that allows backups and homebrew to boot now? No mod-chip required.
So this here may have caused an influx of sales.

Emulation on the Wii Already Came a Long Way
Already the Nintendo Wii is home to emulators for Snes, GBA, GBC, Nintendo 64, MAME, Nes, Genesis, Master System, Game Gear and more With the homebrew channel it makes the system even better. Lets hope piracy doesnt ruin a great homebrew scene. For those interested in emulators be sure to check out Wii News http://wii-news.dcemu.co.uk/

Re:PSP
Hack it for homebrew, and you can have on and offline google maps with GPS Support, http://deniska.dcemu.co.uk/mapthis-0-5-20-with-holux-support-for-slim-psps-79825.html and PSP SSH http://zx81.zx81.free.fr/serendipity/index.php?/categories/34-SSH-Client with an IR Keyboard. Oh, and here is Doom II on the PSP http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/doompsp.shtml
PS. Infrared keyboards only work with the original PSP, the updated PSP has more ram and therefore the web browser likely works much better (I have to browse with images off less I run out of memory) So its a tradeoff. -

Re:This is cool
I got old (fat) PSP for Christmas so I spent some time modding it out and here's what I've found.
4gb memory sticks can be found for $60 online and are a great investment.
You can use this program to backup your UMD disks and then compress them, put them on the memory stick, and tada.
iR Shell is awesome, it provides a the ability to control IR devices, nice skinnable shell, good file browser, lets you switch out of games (think alt-tab), play MP3s while you're playing a game and mute game music, toggle CPU speed, do adhoc wifi transfers between PSPs, take screenshots and much more, you can find a larger list of features (and the un-official forum) here.
PSP Vault has a very nice downloads section, tons of guides and very active forums.
Psp-homebrew has a great list of homebrew you can sort by firmware version. compatibility
QJ.net is another good resource.
PSP Radio lets you stream internet radio on your PSP.
There are NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, Sega Genesis, Neo-Geo, N64, Atari 2600, C64 and probably others.
Wifisniffer is a great probably that does just what it says.
PSP Weather is another good one.
PSP HTTPD lets you use your psp as a webserver.
Portable VNC lets you control your PC with your PSP and there is software that will let you use your PSP as your gamepad for your PC.
PSP XTI is a TI-92 (Graphing calculator) emulator for the PSP. GPS is soon coming to the PSP (USA only), it will be available as a UMD but no release date or price has been set.
There are many others, just browse the file collections and forums.
If you have a PSP with the factory firmware and wish to downgrade it can be an annoying process, it depends on what version firmware you're running.
This forum post as has the information you need.
Used PSPs can be had for less than $100 in stores near me, including a 1gb pro-duo stick, I think I've squeezed $100 worth of features out of it.

Thank God For Homebrew and Custom Firmware
Sony messed up on a lot of things for the PSP but the PSP brought Homebrew and Emulators on the PSP to the mainstream like never before and the releases of Custom Firmwares that play PSone Games at full speed really brought the PSP to the masses. Fanjita and Dark Alexs downgraders/homebrew loaders have shown the best of what can be done on the PSP. To date there has been over 1000 Homebrew and Emulation releases on the PSP. The PSP isnt all that bad.

Re:No Game Boy Player for Wii
You use a memory card (SD + GameCube adapter) and a boot disc, as described here. Datel sells everything you need for $50.
-
Pokemon Ruby was a GBA game...Don't tell me that the lack of a controller port for GH guitars creates a bigger net loss of backwards compatibility than the lack of a high-speed port for Game Boy Player. Rhythm games for PlayStation (NTSC U/C) and PlayStation 2 (NTSC U/C) that use a custom controller number two dozen at the most; all I can think of at the moment are seven DDR titles (USA, Konamix, MAX, MAX2, Extreme, Extreme 2, Supernova), Aerobics Revolution, In the Groove, Beatmania, Taiko Drum Master, and the two Guitar Hero titles. The rest of the custom controller games are light-gun games such as the Time Crisis series. I'd bet the Mario and Pokémon franchises alone encompass more titles than those.
Pokemon Ruby wasn't a GameCube Game. It would be like the Ps3 not being able to play PSP games. Now there was a 3rd party device that let you play GBA games through an adapter that worked through the memory card port. That sould still work.
I know I'm an odd one, but I was a late-comer to the PS2, and mostly bought the games that are now incompatible. I have GH, GHII, a few DDR's and Kingdom Hearts. So for me not being able to play most of my games matters.
-
Homebrew is what this is for
Imagine fitting 40 gbs of homebrew and roms on your DS with this hard drive, it would be awesome, but lets be fair this will never catch on unless its shrunk down to miniscule size and even then with news from the Nintendo DS Emulation scene of a new flash cart the same size as a normal game cart who really needs it.

Whats Worrying Is Sonys Linking via PSPConnect
On my trawl of PSP news sites i came across one which had an article about Sony linking to a hacking site , i thought this is of course rubbish, but a closer look at PSP Connect has verified that news.
Now i went to the site in question and theres an iso loader called DevHoook for the PSP. Surely sony dont want to offend all the game companies by linking to sites like this.
Are Sony that desperate for users to use the playstation portable that they link to a hacking site.? -
Dont Trust IGE and Their Offspring sites
Just so you know, IGE are also the people who own the QJ/PSPupdates sites who have also tried to buy out sites like PSP News. The QJ sites charge 3 dollars a week to forum users so they can remove ads/popups (which firefox moves ok), Like IGE they are buying out the competition, the recent buy was a Podcasting site, they have also Paid Homebrew coders Like Fanjita for exclusives and threatened Legal proceedings against PSP Homebrew sites who didnt link to them for the release. For the "premium forum acess" QJ people get money off vouchers for other sites owned by IGE. All in all a real scam network

Re:I can't wait to see this..
this seems kind of like a scare tactic towards Nintendo for offering free games on Revolution.
That, or it's a reaction to the Nintendo DS's back-compatibility. Or it's a reaction to homebrew emulation efforts.
-
Good News for the HomebrewsSo there are already sites out there for Dreamcast, Xbox, PS2 and a multitude of other consoles/handhelds. This will make it a lot easier for homebrew execution to get started on the Xbox 360 for those who welcome it. It technically isn't legal since these developers don't have developer licenses but since they don't sell their homebrew apps, they usually aren't targeted.
What a lot of people are interested in will probably be the porting of older consoles through known emulators to the Xbox 360. I don't want an Xbox 360 but we'll see how well this development takes off. I long for an emulator that plays my old SNES games as it is kind of cumbersome to have many many systems to hook up. A fully functioning Link to the Past on Xbox 360 would make me buy it.
For those of you looking for free game ISOs to dump from the internet to your Xbox 360, this is not something that will allow this yet as from the article:Note: Before people try to launch crazy ideas again: No this does not allow you to copy retail games (signed for XBOX360DVD media only) to the HD and play them. It's a tool that gives you access to the Xbox 360 HD and Memcard from a PC, it does not hack/bypass any security.
So there's no free games yet. On top of that, you can't shell out the boot sequence from a disc to use it for launching your own homemade application. Hopefully we'll see that in a few more months. I myself am not really interested in "free" games, just want to be able to use my Xbox as a real toy instead of the confines of those who can afford the insane developer's license fee.
Anyone else notice that this article reads like an advertisement for 360gamesaves? There's three links to it.
