Re:Is it worse or better?
They are standard fare from DealExtreme. I don't know why this is even news.
Actually some of the phones they have look pretty decent. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of the watch phones that they sell.

Re:Weeeellllllllll.
It has a varying level of difficulty, depending on which PSP you've picked up.
As of my last foray into that realm:
PSP-1000 was the easiest to exploit, depending on firmware version. May need to have a go at it with a service mode battery if the firmware version is too high.
PSP-2000 usually requires a service mode battery and a 256 MB or larger memory stick to exploit. The batteries are cheap (about $7 online if you know wher).
PSP-3000 had only a HEN exploit to date, which would allow one to run homebrew, but no PSP or PSX games. There's a few scattered claims that one could get a partial CFW onto the unit that would enable the playing of backups, but I've not had that experience.
PSP GO is a STOP. Return this box to the nearest retailer for full refund. You can't even play your legally purchased UMD games on this device, from what I understand.

Re:Antenna?
I agree -- it's not practical. Just look around: there's no other products that manage to shrink an antenna down in size, and still operate at 2.4GHz, are there?
Given the severe lack of anyone doing stuff like this, it must be impossible to use an antenna shorter than a quarter-wavelength for anything, ever. I mean, it's obvious, isn't it?

Re:Highly Disturbing
FWIW:
I have used this inexpensive pouch to keep my cell phone from working*, without the hassle of turning it off and back on. It worked fine**. The pouch has two compartments within it, one within the Faraday cage, and one outside of it, so you could use it as a normal cell-phone holder the rest of the time if you wanted to.
*: My employer had tracking software installed on my company phone, and while I was generally OK with that during my day, I was most most certainly NOT OK with it tracking me on my days off, or when I was on lunch. The software was able to remote-start if the server-side decided that it should be on, so exiting the app wouldn't work -- it'd just come right back after a bit. And, besides, it'd log every time the app stopped and started, and when the phone would boot. Rebooting, therefore, wasn't much of an option either, as there'd be a record for at least every time the phone turned on.
**: I had access to the website where the tracking information went. When the phone was in the bag, it had no idea what I was up to.

Re:I can't wait until. . .
The whole idea of Apple's capacitive touch screens was the lack of a stylus.
For the few that would want a stylus, they are available from lots of suppliers for a couple of bucks:

Re:..and speaking of OnStar:
Because it's a pain in the ass to turn the phone on and off. It took just a second or two to slip it into its Faraday pouch, as opposed to several seconds to shut down, and half a minute to boot back up.
For the AC posting below, who likely will never see this, the case is here.

how to enjoy the theater experience
If you go to the iMax to watch Avatar in 3-D, the cost of tickets eliminates a lot of the cellphone-carrying rif-raff who will watch Avatar at the lower-cost theaters.
Sneak in your own beverages and food. The worst they can do is ask you to leave. In fact, one time I brought in some Margaritas and was told to leave a theater. I said I would need to have a manager discuss the matter with me. No manager returned and I watched the rest of the movie.
Another thing to consider when visiting the theater is this handy tool. Highly illegal, but low risk of being caught with it. -
Extend the battery life
There's a few Wii battery packs out there that allow the controller to be powered over USB with a standard A to mini-B cable. Here's one:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4978
Of course, if you drain the battery pack faster than you can recharge it, you might have a problem. -
Re:How hard is it?
it is entirely another when you take out a whole cell tower or several cell towers do to either malicious programing or just bad programming
Don't be silly. You drank the Apple FUD coolaid. Anybody can build, or even easier, buy a GSM scrambler for a small range. Make it a bit more powerful and you can blanket whole blocks. You could have done so for decades.
And now Apple (and others) are getting comments on their closed ecosystem, and they respond with FUD: "teh evil terr'ists can COMPLETELY jam our phones ZOMG". And you actually believe there isn't a much easier way?

Stuff Archos - SmartQ
The new SmartQ tablets are much cheaper and they allow you to do pretty much whatever you want. You can see them at http://www.dealextreme.com/search.dx/search.SmartQ and those prices include free postage. The new v7 7" (and v5 5", which I haven't seen on anywhere yet but they have made them) even have HDMI and 1080p playback. By default they triple boot WinCE, Ubuntu (you can install Mer) and Android. If you decide to not wait a month or two and yet an older version make sure you upgrade the firmware as the media performance of the 1.0 firmware sucks. The SmartQ tablets don't come with a massive amount of storage space but just add your own, its much cheaper.

Re:Possible strategy
If you are going for cheap, you can get a USB thermometer for like 9 bucks. I'm sure you can find them locally for a bit more.
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.7003The included software is win-only. Several people have coded some linux tools of varying usefulness. You'll probably want to do your own calibrations, mine is consistantly off, but I've seen others complain of nonlinear responses.

Not sure about Mac/Linux. The more expensive professional ones support them (as well as things like logging and two-factor security), but you can get them for as little as £10 if you just need a basic one.

GPS jammer for 27 USD including shipping.
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.8758
Remember that GPS signals are very, very weak. I have tested one of these, and it completely blocked a very sensitive SirfStar III -based receiver within a 5-meter range. The transmit power is actually much less than in a typical cell phone, so they are legal in my country.
Buy two if you're really paranoid..

$26 GPS blocker. Or you can splurge and get the $80 mini version that plugs into the cigarette lighter.

Re:GPS Blocking
They have that covered too but it cost a bit more... http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13233 I like the description "- Bus and vehicles (imagine how you can finally have a good undisturbed nap)" I can sleep soundly knowing my phone does not work? or sleep better due to knowing I am not being tracked? Either way its funny the lengths people will go to have or take away some ones privacy lol

GPS Blocking
I guess if its too much of a problem you could buy one of these things.... http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.8758 at a little under 27 USD with no taxes and no shipping I imagine its cheaper then the tracking device.

Re:windows on ARM existsHeh, I must admit I ordered a SmartQ5 recently. Cheap enough for me to be a semi impulse buy. Small enough to fit in a pocket. And I'm interested in the state of Linux distributions on arm platforms. Sofar I've planned to try the default Ubuntu, MER (meamo clone) and Android.
A dedicated tablet is still something different than a mini laptop though. I also use a flybook which can convert to tablet mode, but I seldom use it that way. Prolly has to do with my preference for a CLI.
(I ordered it at Dealextreme. Be prepared to wait a few weeks for it though. The availability information is a very freely interpreted indication)

Much cheaper...
Personally I would have gone with something from deal extreme, a GPSSMS bridge. It costs the same as the iPhone, but without the contract. You could have bought simple card from Walmart.
Not to mention it would have been designed for this and probably last a bit longer. Put in eBay after you're done and recoup some of the costs.
What does a iPhone cost without the data plan? (Say the phone broke and you need a new one, not to mention you just signed up for 2 years)

Re:Too easy to spoof
I know you're joking, but: I have a nifty little pouch that I can put my phone into, which does a lovely job of blocking signals.
I use this specifically to avoid tracking (my company phone has Big Brother built into it), and have verified that it does serve this purpose.

GPS Jammer
Here I was just wondering what kind of a job I'd need to have in order to need one of these: http://dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.8758 $33 for a GPS blocker/jammer seems like it'd be a lot cheaper than paying tolls.

Re:That could be pretty cool
re: the 2.5mm jack
check out DealExtreme, for a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter: $1.85 and has a built in mic. i have had good luck purchasing from them and when i bought there was no shipping charges. it sucks that you have to buy one, but if you do at least get one that is cheap like it should be. around here similar adapters cost 10 times this much money at a phone store. -
Re:So this implies...
Many online stores are not situated inside the US, and do not ship from the US, but do ship to it.
Places like... PlayAsia, I believe?
Here's a Chinese Handheld (Dingoo). I have trouble believing that $82 w/ free worldwide shipping includes patent fees to Nintendo for their wonderful DPAD.

It's fantastic when you don't have an internet connection. And it's open-source.

Let me hi-jack this to ask a serious question..
How dangerous do the physics-nerds amongst you think this little gadget is: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.6830 ? From what I know, as long as it does not crack and I don't breathe the stuff, it's perfectly save to carry on on your keyring, but I like to triple-check in a case like this, mainly cause I don't fancy the thought of frying my crotch (or worse, destroying data on my thumb drive!). Sadly, I don't have a Geiger counter nor a way to test x-ray exposure (Bremsstrahlung..) so there is no way for me to actually check on this.
PS: It's awesome! Paired with a small Q5-based AAA flashlight on your keyring, you will never know how you were able to survive, before!
-
Re:Great but...
You are likely right(if not a year, it'll be ebay fodder in 18 months).
It's $80 right now, with free shipping worldwide. Has been that price since it launched.
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.20217
Well, it might be a waste of money, but it shouldn't take long to make up $80 of value from playing old classics.

Re:Just as long as it's truly Bluetooth compatible
If you have XP, I can recommend the adapter in this package. It's cheap and works really well with Wii Remotes.
From the reviews, it looks like the bundled software is useless and badly supported. I'd rather not give money to a company trying to make money that way. Now HERE is a cheap Bluetooth dongle that works with Wiimotes. Though it doesn't come with any software or driver stack and I've only used it with Linux.

Re:"Only those with something to hide..."
Less than $500?
I bring you this: A battery-powered GPS tracker with integrated tri-band GSM, for $123 delivered. Just epoxy a magnet on there somewhere, and stick it someplace where it won't get wet. There's no audio, and the battery life is probably only a few days, but the latter is something that can easily be fixed by any enterprising geek.
And the countermeasure: A $32.29 GPS jammer.

camera interdiction
And in the end, all this inconvenience to cell phone, PDA, media player, netbook, and laptop users (not to mention American's with Disability Act violation - some people need cameras) will be about as successful as drug interdiction at the border.
Joe consumer can buy a camera (still and video with audio) disguised as, for example, a working ball point pen (doubles as a 4GB USB flash drive) for $35.17, delivered (lower end model under $20). Another is rather poorly disguised as an ID badge (required in many places where cameras are banned); poor implementation but you can see where that is headed. Another is disguised as a wrist watch. Another as a necktie. Another small model. Miniaturization has made camera interdiction at the border all but impossible. Unless you are going to strip search and body cavity search everyone, provide them with substitute clothing, and prevent them from taking anything inside, cameras will get in.
Ironically, before all this stuff was available to the consumer for the price of dinner, there were government facilities that had these kinds of no camera security precautions while on the inside engineers were developing spy cameras that were small enough to circumvent the exact same security provisions at the other country's facilities.
Miniature equipment has been available for over a hundred years if you had the cash. And if the stakes were high enough to justify banning cameras, the camera cost was minor compared to what the pictures were worth.
The only difference with your portable electronics gear is plausible deniablity if you get caught before you snap the pictures.
