Old does not mean useless
Until the hard drive crashed last month I was running Win 2K on this old Fujitsu Lifebook D765X Pentium Laptop. My sig other took the "good" laptop to Nova Scotia, so I travelled to San Francisco with this one.
Although slow, the machine actually ran quite OK, even logging into wireless networks and surfing the 'net. Office '97 ran just dandy, as did everything else that I usually have installed.
Pentium 166, 48 megs RAM. Stable as a rock.
I doubt very much that XP would even install on this machine, but 2K was happy as a clam. -
Patents pending?
Jeez, it's not like this is a new idea. If they patent this, good for them, but I don't see a reason for it to be patented in the first place - this idea has been in the air or in some form of implementation for a long time now, just watch Minority Report.
I am sure that the patent is not too hard to get, all they have to do is say: but we have a seperate display on every button! Not like that has never been done before, right? -

Re:Maybe eBay will finally start policing it's ownDon't just complain about it here. Tell eBay about it!
If everyone commenting in this article took 15 minutes to report all the listing policy violations they found, that would send a message to them.
I send about 15 or 20 reports a month. Don't know how many of them get taken down though. My latest report decided he was going to charge $250 shipping for his LCD monitor. But he'll take $20 if you pick it up. What a deal!

I'm listening to "Willenium" right now
and what's funny is that it's a copy of the original disc. The original is sitting in a drawer filled with stationary crap and other misc junk that only sees the light of day at Christmas time.
Originally when I bought it, I thought "hey, this shiat is gonna be worth like a lot of money someday at the pawn shop.. maybe even full price!" but oh, how I was wrong about that.
If I would have known that public libraries would just be given Willenium for free in 2004, I would have waited to listen to this masterpiece.
Anyone want to buy this historical album from me? -
Suit for saleThat bear-proof suit was up for auction but didn't sell so maybe it's still available.
It also features a built-in video screen, a cooling system, pressure-bearing titanium struts, protective airbags, shock absorbers, a robotic third arm, built-in regular arms and swivel shoulders.
And best of all, they're pretty darn bear-resistant! Always important on Mars!"Good heavens, something's wriggling out of the shadow like a gray snake. Now it's another one, and another. They look like tentacles to me. There, I can see the thing's body. It's large, large as a bear and it glistens like wet leather. But that face, it . . . Ladies and gentlemen, it's indescribable."

Re:Is this why...
Actually, the Neo-Geo is the longest lasting game console, it was released in 1990, and just this year the last game for the system was released.
Of course, you had to pay lots of money (hundreds of dollers per game), but they had a decent following, although it never had the success of the PSOne. They're still quite expensive. Gabe from Penny-Arcade is a collector. -
An idea
One time payment category
Cheap terrestrial antenna : $40
HDTV decoder to pull stuff off antenna : $130
Monthly stuff
Netflix for unlimited DVD rental: $20/month
Grab your local news off the antenna (in HDTV if available), watch your favorite TV shows with your Netflix account
FYI: There is some unlimited DVD rental folks that work exactly like Netflix here in Canada

My Grandpa is 1337!
The search on "Jennifer 8. Lee" brought back an interesting blog comment: If it's simply the number eight, why does it have a period after it?
My grandfather's name is A C (let's call him Jonesmith for privacy). When he married my grandmother (first grandpa died before I was born), I thought his name was "Acee", like the local milk company. But his first name is "A", and his middle name is "C". And his full name is A C Jonesmith, not A. C. Jonesmith.
So the blogger is right -- if her middle name is "8", it should be "Jennifer 8 Lee", no period.
And my grandpa was 1337 before 1337 was invented. -
Re:Anime Bootlegs?
how about here? Most of the time though, they won't do anything. "We appreciate that you may have in-depth knowledge of this particular item, but without a complaint from the copyright holder..." or some such nonsense.

Re:They found the problem MAA help needed
I should have added MOL insurance to the Martian Automobile Association brochure.
Those MOLiens get the IntergalacticNet so screwed up, their email doesn't work right, IE is messed up, and when they installed MOL on the rover it started saying:

Miramax does not have that right.Parallel imports are legal in the US. See Quality King Distributors, Inc. v. Lanza Research Int, a unanimous Supreme Court decision. Once the product has been sold by the copyright holder, the first sale doctrine permits further transfers, internationally or otherwise.
There are legislative attempts to change this, but Wal-Mart is opposed, so it's not likely to sneak through.
If you want either of those movies (in Mandarin), they're advertised on eBay for $7.99.

SCO. Squashed. Like a bug.
One day all that old SCO merchandise is going to worth a lot to geeky collectors on eBay.

Fantastic graphics doesn't automatically mean that your limp, soggy title won't sell like shitty beer on a hot night in Toronto? What an incredibly astounding revelation! This discovery will turn the entire game industry on its head, as without graphics they find themselves without a pot to piss in!

Re:Buy space junk
I thought you meant they should crash the shuttle into the junk in order to bring it down. I'm sure someone on eBay would buy that even.
Hey, they bought my rocks and empty candy wrappers, so why not a smoldering shuttle with Vanguard impact damage? -
PayPal needs a lot of work, and regulating...
As the defacto online payment system in North America, it needs rules, and fast. The current system allows for people to make minor, unintentional typos, and be charged $25US for the mistake. We are not talking math errors, I mean getting a bank routing number wrong. The transaction will fail, and the good forgiving folks at PayPal ding you $25US each time you hit the transfer button.
The documentation on their website interface is lame. There is not one place I could find that explicitly says that the dollar figure you enter will be in USD, even if you are logged in as an international memeber. They also conceal the fact that you will likely never see your $5 sign up bonus, until you complete an un-insurable, $250US, single transaction. How is that for a requirement that isn't even in fine print, it is on another page that the fine print links to?!
eBay chat boards often have discussions about PayPal problems, including one fellow today that was told in an email from PayPal support, that he would have to register 2 credit cards with him, because they lost the registration for his original card! If anything goes wrong with your PayPal account, basically you are screwed, and have no way to get your money other than suing a mega-business.
Good Luck,
Unhappy PayPal user -
Horrible, shameless plug
I ran into the same problem last year - I wanted something that I could take around with me, I didn't even care if it had a battery, AC power is fine as long as it had a NIC and large screen.
I got lucky and found a off-name brand laptop (Eurocom, a Canadian company who sells high-end laptops to education/government types).
Being a low-income student, I had two choices - a $300-400 pentium (P200ish) laptop with tiny screen or start up another loan and go for an off-lease $1000 machine that was far more than I needed. I feel your pain!
I got lucky on eBay - found a Eurocom (14" TFT / 350MHz AMD / 128MB) and paid relatively little for it (similar laptops at the time were over $1000). Off-name laptops have been good to me - do a few searches before hand though, as there may be some problems with embedded sound/video cards and linux support. No problems for me though.
The shameless plug: I lost my job recently and I had to choose between rent and selling the laptop. The upside is in a few months, I hope to have a better paying job (graduating in a month!) and will probably buy an off-name again. Maybe even new.
The auction is up here.
Other tips: Buy a mini keyboard, optical mouse and a few other trinkets for it too - I tried for a while to use the original keyboard, but when surfaces are too high, it gets uncomfortable REAL quick. It's a little more hassle, but bending your wrists in awkward angles for a few hours at a time is *not* a good idea.
A laptop would never replace my home machine but like my Palm VX, it complements wonderfully.
Good luck!
