Re:Work arounds
I live in Rome.
It may be an opportunity.... but we have literally hundreds of thousands of similar opportunities all over the place. and while I agree that these are precious artefacts that ought to be studied and made available to the public to be seen, the truth is that there's no funding for that, and so they mostly get buried back to preserve them. This while the infrastructure works are delayed for decades, to nobody's advantage. I mean, it's Rome. There's bound to be Roman artefacts, since Romans have lived here for the past few thousands of years.Yeah, ideally the archaeologists would get some additional funding so they could help compensate for the increased construction costs though that doesn't really work politically.
Which reminds me, I was originally gonna write "priceless artifacts" in my original post but then I thought better of it, turns out with good reason.

Re:Wait 20 years....
A TRS-80 in 1983 was up to $1100. In 2017 dollars, that is over $2500. Recently this TRS-80 model 3 sold for $210. So no, relative to its original cost, you won't get a lot of $$$ from ebay auctioning it.

Re:And any with half a brain...
Buying an Arduino Pro mini in Canada:
eBay: 2.48$CAD with no shipping or import costs, estimated delivery within 12-36 business days. Total: 2.48$CAD.
Sparkfun: 9.95$USD (~13.06$CAD) with International Economy shipping of 3.45$USD (4.53$CAD), average delivery 2-4 weeks, may take up to 6 weeks. Total 17.59$CAD if I'm not hit with import fees.
I can get SEVEN Arduino Pro mini from eBay for the cost of a single one from Sparkfun, and the shipping delay is more or less the same in both cases.
I'm all for supporting the little guys but that kind of price difference is way too much.

Re: file transfer
I dont know if you are serious or not--
No. No ancient aliens. ESDI was in use in server equipment from that era. 200mb ESDI interface drives were pretty common inside IBM PS/2 series towers of that era.
Specifically, found inside IBM PS/2 model 60 systems.
http://ps-2.kev009.com/pcpartn...These featured an MCA ESDI hard disk interface in the later models. (Early models had MFM controllers.)
If you suspect aliens, please inform the person selling this 680mb ESDI drive on Ebay.
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/MICROSC...
MFM and ESDI technology didn't get much beyond the 600-700mb before it was completely eliminated, but you CAN find drives that large with that interface type.
No aliens involved.

Re:Ebay Had the Same Problem
A lot of that has to do with Ebay policy. I mentioned this recently in another post, here's a copy-paste:
Recently I ordered two computer mice for my daughters:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Real-Fi...When they didn't arrive after two months, I contacted the seller and he sent two more. When one of _those_ didn't work he sent a _fifth_ mouse! This was two days before the claims for the unreceived mice was to expire in my favour (i.e. a full refund). I contacted Ebay and requested them not to close the issue in two days, as I was still waiting for the replacement mouse. Within five minutes (not two days) the issue was closed in my favour and I got an automatic refund that I neither wanted nor deserved. The poor seller sent _five_ mice and didn't get any of his money. He probably thinks that I'm a scammer as well, when the issue is that Ebay didn't even read my mail asking them to extend his deadline.

Re:I've tried selling on Ebay...
To be fair, I'm a big ebay buyer. Recently I ordered two computer mice for my daughters:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Real-Fi...When they didn't arrive after two months, I contacted the seller and he sent to more. When one of _those_ didn't work he sent a _fifth_ mouse! If there was any good way that I could contact the seller off-ebay and send him the $25 for the mice, I would.

Re:Microsoft buys Microsoft
Just to add one more detail to your argument. You write that killing Android on Nokia is what forced Microsoft to just out-right buy Nokia, and that's grounds for legal action. What about not selling the N950 ever, anywhere?
It was the N9/N950 running Meego which is what started the whole burning oil platform memo/argument from Elop. Elop did everything he could to bury that device and the entire team that developed it, because he wanted to sleep with Microsoft so bad, and do an exclusive. Yet the Meego team did deliver and despite Elop it did go on sale, not in the US or EU but only in a few places like Saudi Arabia and South Africa, thanks to Elop. The US and EU countries were only allowed to buy crippled Microsoft Windows Phone 7.8 OS phones; while Microsoft took more time to finish Windows Phone 8 at Nokia's timely expense.
When the N9 launched, very shortly thereafter Elop even publicly trivialized it by demo'ing a Windows Phone prototype, with his own hands at the Communasia Communications Symposium in Singapore, on June 22, 2011.
http://youtu.be/r1lsJOwdmfA
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/blog/2011/jun/23/nokia-n9-windows-phone-teaseThat's a major Osborne directly attributable to Elop.
So yeah, minority partner Microsoft at the behest of former Microsoft manager S. Elop and Nokia CEO does seem to have driven OS choices on multiple occasions. But l forgot until now what a lovely piece of evidence the N950 is. The N950 which wasn't even allowed to be sold, yet was finished and made available for developers. How much money would a wider release of the N9 generated, and ignoring that for a moment, how much revenue would have been generated if the N950 would have gone on sale even if only in the limited markets the N9 was allowed to be sold in? Why wasn't the N950 ever allowed to be sold anywhere? Look for yourself at what a lovely device it is:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Nokia-N950-16GB-/171130186470?
How popular would this device have been, along with the N9 given sufficient resources & marketing love? We're talking iPhone and Android killers, because along with features like tethering 3g over low-power bluetooth, and low-power SIP support in the OS, Nokia was way ahead of their time. (disclaimer: I use 3g SIP over bluetooth w/ my N9 w/ Ubuntu 12.04 a lot, and battery life is great).
As long as Stephen Elop was Nokia CEO, Nokia handset division was going to be a 100% Microsoft shop. A real CEO should have remained focused to prior Meego efforts and strategy, and worked to fix problems along those lines.
I dream of Elop defending himself in court against the charges you have suggested, *while* he is active CEO of Microsoft, taking them down with him. (But no way will Bill let him be CEO of Microsoft, because aside from delivering Nokia to him, his actual performance was abysmal).

Ink jet reservoir
Ink jet reservoir refillable cartridges are great. (No this isn't my ebay auction) I have linked to one for a canon printer but you can get them for many other printer models. Basically these things allow you to put 120ml of ink into each colour reservoir; whereas a standard cartridge capacity is in the range of 12-20ml. So you can print and print without worrying about having to mess with the messy cartridges. Also the reservoirs are external to the printer so you can see how much ink is remaining at a glance.
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Empty-CISS-for-Canon-PGI-225-CLI-226-525-526-refillable-cartridge-MG5320-iX6520-/111142444021?pt=US_Ink_Cartridges&hash=item19e09b1bf5
I am going to guess that inkjet printers will use far less power in both standby and printing. Plus inkjet printers are cheaper and generally smaller/lighter for shipping.
Printers can be tricky about non-standard printer cartridges so before jumping in with refillable carts do a single printer test to make sure there is no complaining.
One theoretical limitation with inkjets is that they are not truly meant for heavy duty office use. I have seen them perform fine under heavy load but seeing that the ink is worth more than the printers having spare cheap printers where you can just swap in the old ink reservoirs would be a good idea.
Personally I just buy used printers and throw in refillables from day one. These can be had for cheap from people who found out the price of store bought refills. -
Re:I don't even, what are they, what?
Is there a good firmware with LCD and SD card support that doesn't require an Arduino and shields and is DIY-friendly?
I only need the SD card reading, LCD-display, gcode-to-step/dir-pulses part, I just want to make a headless TB6560-driven CNC.
A few people have suggested using one ATmega328P with grbl and another ATmega328P for reading the SD card, driving the LCD and reading the joystick+buttons.

Re:Bigger != Better
Oh, it's definitely 'pencil-pointy'
:) The body of the stylus feels somewhat like a thicker pen, but it tapers down to a nice, pressure-sensitive, replaceable point. It's not pin-pointy, so as not to scratch the tablet surface, but definitely nice and fine, and hard not rubbery. It is battery powered, but from all I've read, the single aaa battery lasts quite a long time :)There are also some nice cases available on eBay. We ordered two different kinds, since we got these for the mother and mother in law as birthday presents (portable picture albums and email devices, mostly
:). This one is nice and light, with all access to ports and stuff, but the triangle support is not as stable as one could like, it keeps sliding out flat when you're using it. This one is much more stable for use while propped up, although the one we got didn't rotate (can't quite find the exact model, but it was from seller bigeyestore). It also needed a bit of trimming to fully free up the SD card slot cover, but overall, I think this one is the better cover.Have fun!

PalmOS Watch
There was a watch that was a full PalmOS device. You can still find them on eBay and they are probably still the most versatile watch computer ever sold. It was Fossil brand, too.
With technology improvements it should be possible in a year or two to have a full Palm Pixi equivalent in a watch.
I have a website that tell you when your bus or streetcar is going to arrive and I often think it would be very useful if there was some way to have that information on my watch.
Something similar to webOS dashboard controls that get exported to your watch would be one approach.

How long until.....
How long until we move to using dedicated terminals to access our online banking. A device that only did banking could be really cheap. Load a custom, hardened version of Linux on there, that only displayed a web browser, and only went to the bank's website, and you'd probably go a long way to stopping this, and many other kinds of fraud.

Use DSLI had a similar problem at a ski resort - The distance was too 'far' for CAT5, and Wireless / Fiber was too difficult due to weather and cost. I wound up using a couple of "Tut Systems" DSL ethernet bridge boxes, hooked together with about 750 meters of cat 5. Worked like a charm.
Here's the kind of boxes I'm talking about:

I've found Zen with one of these. . .Jornada 820
You can pick that particular one up on eBay for about $100 after shipping.
It's not very pretty, and it doesn't have much memory, but with 16 Megs and a flashcard slot, it's more than enough if your serious about dedicated word processing. I often have ten or more live documents open at once, which is really great. Whatever I feel like working on is instantly at my finger tips. You cannot, however, use this device for web browsing, even though it comes with internet options. The little processor was lightweight even back in 1998 when this computer was first made available; it really has to chug to get through graphics-heavy HTML.
But there are some features which have not since been matched. The keyboard is very comfortable and I've used it with no complaints for hours at a stretch, but the best feature, (and one which I wasn't even looking for before I bought it), is that the Jornada performs an 'instant-on' power up. That is, in a couple of seconds, you can go from the tickle of inspiration to full-speed keyboarding. The battery is a lith-ion, and generally lasts me for about 3 hours with all the power-saving features shut off. You can supposedly get a bigger battery if you hunt around, but I've never bothered. In any case, the Jornada isn't a traveler's word processor. (I'd probably get one of those Alphasmarts if I was heading into darkest Peru, and probably be griping about screen size and keyboard angles there and back.)
The screen is old tech, only 256 colors and it's sometimes easy to lose your cursor if you don't remember where you left it since the refresh rate isn't spectacular. Also it doesn't cut it with outdoor sunlight conditions. But for straight writing indoors, it's comfortable and responsive with no reflection problems at all; easy on the eyes. I also use it as an eReader sometimes.
The cursor works by touch-pad, and the machine has a USB port, so you can swap in a mouse if you like. The screen is 8.9", which is JUST this side of big enough; any smaller and I'd have been looking for something else. The 7" Asus Eee screen was a big turn off for me.
The two hinges aren't well constructed, so you can't be rough with it. When I bought mine from eBay, it came with a couple of hair-line cracks which blossomed over the last couple of years into a fully busted hinge. But the other hinge is holding fast, so my suspicion is that if you treat these things with a bit of care, they should last indefinitely.
I've often, when using it in a public place, been asked by people what it is and where I got it. A big screen and a proper keyboard on such a small item is obviously something people are impressed by, and who can blame them?
I'm considering getting another one or perhaps some kind of other replacement, but because mine is still working with a single hinge, I don't need to just yet. And also, NOBODY has made a decent writing tool on par with the Jornada 820. The new line of Asus Eee's due this month which will have bigger screens, are sexy and the web-surfing ability is tempting, but that small keyboard makes me leery, plus the price-tag is just insulting. $750 for an item which was supposed to be under $200. . ? Lame. --And even with the Eee's famous 20-second boot time, having to give up the Jornada's instant-on feature would be a major bummer.
I've written hundreds of pages on the Jornada, so when I see stories like this one from HP, (who also produced the Jornada series as it happens), I get quite excited. But you're right. Nobody's produced the holy grail of digital writing tools yet, despite the fact that all the technology is available and just waiting for some inspired company to put the pieces together.
Maybe next year.

Re:Still wating for a good e-book reader!
I'm an electrical engineer going on my fourth year, and have been using a slate-style tablet PC for a little over a year now. A Motion M1400 to be exact, which I picked off of ebay for pretty cheap (see here, pretty cheap indeed). I can say without a doubt that a tablet with One-Note is far superior to a conventional paper notebook aside from price. I was able to scan assignments in for later reference, write up my homework, save and index presentations given by professors, and most importantly search my indexed notes for past lessons. Drawing is no problem, neither is annotating scanned documents. Plus it can be used as a pretty convenient e-book reader
:).
Now about your durability argument, the larger the book is, the weaker the spine because it has to hold together more sheets of paper. I've wrecked the binding on more than one book since starting school, and I know that chem. students use some awfully large books. If you are stepping on and wrecking stuff in your room 'cause you left it on the floor, it's not the 'ebook's fault, it's yours for leaving it there in the first place! -
Re:A bit harsh on the Russians.
"As of the mid-70's... the Russians weren't admitting anything other than successful missions".
While true of their general policy, definitely not true of the two instances when they lost a crew (Soyuz 1 in 1967 and Soyuz 11 in 1971) on a mission. In both instances, there was a big state funeral (US astronaut Tom Stafford was even a pallbearer at the second) and their human spaceflight programme was brought to a halt. The Soyuz 1 and Soyuz 11 tragedies were well-known about in the West. No need to trouble the CIA. You could, for example, have picked up Time magazine May 5, 1967 or July 12, 1971.
Or maybe just the local paper. Here's an eBay auction (not mine) for a regional American newspaper reporting the Soyuz 1 crash as front-page news on the day after it happened, giving Soviet news agency Tass as the source.

From the seller's point of view
I am currently a PowerSeller on eBay, selling virtual items (not currency) for a game called Guild Wars. I was (until last week) the second biggest item seller on eBay for this game, and have been for over a year. Although it is just me and my partner operating this business, while still holding full-time jobs, the business is Incorporated in Canada, and a LLC in the US. We pay taxes in both countries on the income generated, and pay a LOT of fees to eBay and Paypal.
Last week, I saw several sellers of Guild Wars items and currency get their items de-listed, and even getting their accounts suspended, for selling these items. Although at this time THERE IS NO PUBLISHED POLICY AGAINST SELLING VIRTUAL IN-GAME ITEMS ON EBAY, I pulled down all my listings until I could get a better idea of what was going on. A few of my items got de-listed after I had pulled them down (??) with a notation that my listing infringed eBay's Copyright Policies, but no further information was provided at the time.
On Saturday night (10pm), another of my self-removed listings was pulled, again with a Copyright Violation notation, and a second notice that they tried to call me and were unable to reach me - which was untrue, as I was home all day and the phone never rang. So I responded and asked what was up, and the responded Sunday midafternoon, stating that they did not try to call me, but quoting from a Policy that I had yet to hear of. Here is what they wrote me:
My name is Mario, and I want to thank you for taking the time to write
to eBay. I will be happy to assist you with your concern about ended
auction.
In review of your account, I can confirm we did not attempt to call
regarding the removal of one of your listings due to the time. We only
contact members by phone between 9am - 9pm local time, and your listing
was removed after 9pm, which meant no call was attempted. This notice
you received was to inform you of the intention. I apologize for any
confusion or inconvenience this may have caused.
WHY YOUR LISTING WAS ENDED:
After careful review of the information you have provided and that of
your account details, your listings were removed because they were found
to be in violation of our Virtual Items policy. Please note that all
associated fees have been credited to your account.
eBay doesn't allow the sale of on-line virtual gaming items, including
game accounts, game characters, game currency, game points or other
similar game items. Although you may have sold similar items in the
past, future listings of such items will not be permitted.
As always, our goal is to keep the eBay marketplace a safe place to buy
and sell. Please understand that continued violations of eBay policies
may result in a range of actions, including listing cancellation, limits
on account privileges, account suspension, forfeit of eBay fees on
cancelled listings, and loss of PowerSeller status.
I encourage you to read the information available on our Help pages
about why we may restrict items from the eBay site. Please visit:
http://pages.ebay.ca/help/policies/downloadable.ht ml
Now this is all well and good, but after 2 full hours of searching, I could not find a "Virtual Items Policy" listed anywhere on the eBay website, nor could I find anything in the announcements board or eBay news items regarding this policy. So this (Monday) morning, I called eBay, and was told that there is in fact a Virtual Items policy, although they have yet to publish it.
Now, every listing I have ever placed on eBay carried a disclaimer, which states that I do not sell items, but rather the time required to acquire them. This is my disclaimer:
"All items in "Guild Wars" are the property of NCsoft Entertainment Inc. This auction is not for the ownership of intellectual property owned by NCsoft Entertainment Inc. but for the time and effo -

Re:It could be worse...
I bought one of these to use my mp3 player (not an iPod) in my work vehicle, because it just has a tape-deck+radio which tends to get no reception on long drives out-of-town.
I was expecting static and/or a crappy signal (including shipping I think I paid $10CAD), but was pretty impressed with what I got for my money. My mp3 player doesn't play+charge by USB simultaneously, but if yours does you can also use the USB adaptor (or firewire on some models) to keep the thing powered up while you're on the road.
Not the best solution, but a pretty good value for the price. -
Not only that...
But while the installed software might be genuine (as in it *is* Microsoft Windows XP and not Linux XP or something like that, the original installation media was generally *not* a genuine Microsoft disc (unless installed illegitimately but a shop ) and the license is not a geniune microsoft license, not is the license code genuine. Moreover, since WGA only works properly (I use works loosely, sometimes it doesn't anyways) with legitimate copies, one could state that functionally it is not the same either... although said functionality difference was one implemented by microsoft.

So who plays Magic Online?
Many posters have mentioned their hesitance towards digital goods and their intent to ignore purely digital content. Though I applaud your desire for continued use of hard goods, I do not believe that digital goods should simply be ignored as the potential value is far too great.
To wit, check out Magic: the Gathering Online.
As a quick background M:TG (AKA Magic) is a collectible card game. So it is a card game, with its own set of base rules, and each card has its own text indicating its "rules". In addition, it is collectible: cards come in randomized packs and and boxes.
New sets are produced quarterly, and the game is the ultimate cash cow, with a massive secondary market. With some cards going for over $1,000 dollars and others regularly trading for around $20, these pieces of cardboard have some serious value. So how do you bring that on-line?
Magic's makers (Wizards of the Coast) had many battles to fight (pricing, value of digital cards, premium cards, etc.) But in the end, the online is hugely successful. Many Magic players maintain both regular and online card collections. But the game has also opened up to other players. Players from small communities, remote locations, players with families and unusual work shifts, etc. The on-line community has its own timelines, some unique play formats and tournaments and its always accessible.
So how did they price it? Product costs the same online as their MSRP in stores. Online has its own secondary market, but the same basic price going in to the system. Indeed, people are paying the same price for digital goods!
The Point? Why would I pay money for digital product? B/c it's worth my money! I get lots of play time out of Magic Online. Tediums like card sorting and deck building are drastically reduced. Wizards actually used the digital medium to add value to their product.
When the media industries decide to use digital mediums to add value to our purchases they will secure more business. iTunes makes sales on the basis that they add the value of simplicity and selection: pick these songs, drop them on your iPod, play them on your computer, get new ones instantly, no CDs, no lines, no problem. Sure, some of this reasoning may be specious, but the people who feel this way are the people buying songs from iTunes.
These people make sacrifices in quality and hard media for all of these other perks, just like the Magic players eschew the real cards for the ability to play more with the cards they have online.
Once movies are better on my HDD than on a DVD, then I will move to that media. Many of the digital features of music do not carry the same weight for movies. Having an iTunes for movies would be "cool", but it's far less useful for movies than music. A reduced-quality audio recording is sufficient for most of the places we listen to music: in a car with stock speakers, on a bus with average headphones, in a room with a boom-box, etc. But a reduced-quality video is insufficient for my Home Theatre. Ease-of-use and sound/image quality is a major DVD feature, I don't see how low-quality digital is going to provide me with enough redeeming features to eschew my hard copy.
So until DVDs are better on my HDD, I plan to keep buying second-hand DVDs from the movie store.

Get an ITPS
An ITPS will help by adding some protection to your DC power against overload. As a bonus, it will also connect to the "soft on/off" connector on your motherboard, allowing for the PC to do a safe shutdown when the ignition is turned off, and to prevent massive power stutters when turning the ignition on.
