Re:Overpriced?
Likewise, here in the UK, it would destroy the second-hand laptop market.
look on ebay.co.uk for laptop auctions finishing in the next day for less the 265GBP, which is 500USD.
You will not find anything close to the specs of the Walmart $500, let alone the $550 machine. And that is for second-hand machines, from non-reputable dealers with little or no warrenty.
Check out this example:
9 hours to go, and it's at the same price as the Walmart 1.1Ghz WinXP/Wireless machine
It has P3 750Mhz, same RAM, less HD space, smaller screen, probably non-legit OS and so on. Typical price for UK ebay - as you can see it has attracted a fair number of bids. And that's 2nd-hand!!
Come on ASDA. Get these in stock asap. -
Re:Next year
this fits most of your requirements. it's for sparc monsters though.

Re:Even the 12-year old HP-100LX was better
In fact, you can buy a "battery extender" off Ebay
And I'm sure you can easily find a cigarette lighter adaptor for a Palm - and hack that to fit a 12v point of your needs.
But I agree, the lack of a backup battery in a Palm and lack of "Real context switching" is a serious oversight. -

Im very interested...because Im a potential switcher. I purchased a B&W 350mhzx PowerMac last week to see if MacOSX was really as good as its made out to be here on slashdot. The system is intended to let me try out OSX and a few other apps, so the speed isnt really an issue, adn Ive chucked a GB of ram in there anyway.
Coming from a WindowsXP background, some things Ive noticed so far:- Clicking the 'X' doesnt actually close the application. This annoyed me to start with, but ive slowly gotton used to it.
- Having to select the application window before I can quit it using the application menu. Or I have to right click on the dock icon to quit. Annoying still.
- Love the dock. Its just
..... right. - Most of the file system is hidden from you, which I like. Put my data where I want it and ignore the rest.
- The ability to access the underlying BSD OS easily. Love it.
- Everything looks and feels 'polished'. THats what I always hated about KDE/Gnome when I tried them, the features were there, but noone had taken the time to step back and polish the entire thing off so it all looks and feels together.
- Every time I boot the Mac, my TFT display is 'wavey' until i have the monitor do an autoadjust. Dont really know whoes fault this is, tho its fine under windows and linux.
:) If you are wondering what OSX is like, go grab a cheap Mac off of Ebay and try it out. 233 Imac for £99?, 333 imac for £110? (both the same person, which isnt me, I have no affiliation with this person at all. - notice added for the pedantic slashdotters who hate to see someone else profit) -

Re:Interesting
I just got my mom a Nokia 6820 to replace her aging 3210. Sure, it has a color screen and funny tones and a camera and all that crap, but the good part is the flip-open keyboard that makes it a joy to type SMS and e-mail. It also has bluetooth in case you don't want to dig it out of your pocket for checking mail on the laptop.
If you like the size of the 3210, there's also the 6810 that's bigger than the 6820, lacks the camera, but contains an FM radio. Costs less too. And I think you can still find somewhere the older 6800 that has somewhat less features but still that nice flip-open keyboard. Could find a bargain on eBay.
The 6820 costs ~300e and the 6810 ~250e new here in Finland.
Of course, if you don't type all that many messages, you'll find that one of the sub-150e models will suit your needs just fine. -
Atlas
I wish they'd listed more of the hardware they're having problems getting hold of or getting working. I found this about the Atlas, and I actually remember the Sinclair ZX-80. Sure enough, as the site says they're sometimes sold on e-bay. Someone want to tell the library to get their bid in?

Cheap wireless camera
You can buy cheap wirelss cameras complete with receivers for very little cash these days. Some are good for night vision and have IR LEDs so you can watch the kid at night. I don't see why you would ever need to watch your kid on your phone or anything, just get a decent babysitter and she can call you in case of emergency. Sometimes you can go overboard with technology, you know!

Why not use Recovery Cards
I've often had the problem of setting up public access terminals. I've tried all sorts to stop users blatting the box, installing spyware / trojans / activex controls and in almost every case the customer (I work for a consultancy) has wanted the boxes security relaxed so users can install the latest version of flash or any other activeX component (Read: pron dialler) We've looked at Citrix and TSE use in these scenarios but the main problem is if one user breaks the box the box is dead. The costs are also huge compared to linux options. However the final solution we came to was to use Recovery Cards. They're cheap pci devices which restore the harddisk to its original state every reboot. They do it instantaneously too which means if a user kills a box it will be fixed by a reboot - unless they physically damaged the box! So we built a Client PC with W1nd0ws and installed Office and a few other apps for the company and then locked the boxes down using a combination of
.exe deletion and a local policy file. Once we were happy with the build we imaged it to the other terminals, stuck the PCI cards into the systems and enabled the 'Protected Mode' Each of us was then frustrated when we tried to kill the box as a user would. As soon as we were happy we'd deleted every file in existance we rebooted and bingo... The Client that we did the installation for has had one box of 12 go down with a dead drive in the past 2 years. They've all had critical patches updated at some point but they're all alive and well below current SP levels. They've all had virus outbreaks, porn diallers, spyware, trojans etc etc installed but one reboot later and they're fixed. They are on a seperate VLAN to the rest of the network though which is why they don't care too much about patch levels. You and find one of these things here - sorry for the e-bay ad but it was easy to find the picture. I don't know the people selling it either so buyer beware. -
ultimate ebay auction
speaking of ebay auctions, check this out - I submitted it as a story to Slashdot (and "surprise" it was rejected), which means it will be rejected about 4 times before someone approves it... but it's the ultimate nerd auction.

OK, that's kinda neat.
But this is really cool.

It's unfortunate, but...
...the only way organizations will stop making spyware, hijackware, bloatware, and the like is if they can make more profit from making clean upstanding software as opposed to shady stuff. Unfortunately, there tends to be more money in stealing people's machines and taking them over than in leveraging synergy with the user.

Yikes.
The subpoena is pretty concerning in itself, but the fact that they were legally banned from talking about it until now is totally scary. It's totally like the PATRIOT Act, but it's imposed by a corrupt software company instead of the FBI. Da fuck?

Quality, not quantity....this XNA thing does concern me a bit, as there is always the fear that MS will us their other markets to barge into a new one.
but i really feel that the console market is different to the PC one in alot of ways, and maybe MS (having not done so well in it) are trying to change it into something they think they know, and have more experience in (i.e. the PC market). all the way that article, that is what was running through my mind.
the thing about the console market is that there is more soul in the games than you will find in PC's (as a rule).
i sometimes feel that console games are more like a collection than pc games - in the same way that a music collector will pay a premium for a rare cd, a games collector will pay for a rare game. good examples of this would some classics for that most ill-fated of consoles, the saturn. you can't pick up Panzer dragoon saga or Radiant silvergun for 5 in a bargin bin.
the point is, there is more to games than just the number of polygons that can be generated, or the crispness of the graphics - it's hard to define, but in some ways i think that the more experienced console game makers have it in spades. AFAIK, gamecube is much less powered than PS2 or XboX, but has still done well enought to lead to talk of GC2
oh, and did you notice that at E3, sony made a big thing about how PSP would be so powerful it could do all this shiny stuff, whereas nintendo tended to focus more on the games they had created. the specs of the DS weren't as important as the software - all sony seemed to promote was the spec.

Re:I'll be doing something similar shortly
In fact, it has one input, internally multiplexed into the card. Your app will have to grok this.
What this means is the maximum frame rate while running all inputs is somewhere under 15fps / card, switching between the inputs as required between frames, which is still acceptable.
I'd also suggest looking on ebay
Unless, of course, you're paranoid enough not to give your address to someone that is selling security gear. -

100 year registration is plain silly. Ten year ones currently are popular but really only to those who have very valuable names or dont want the hassle of re-registering names every year.
The idea of allowing a user to specify a date for renewals is best, for example April 1st could become the date all the domains for a company are renewed, rather than scattered dates throughout the year.

here's how to make it quieter for free
you can rewire your fan for 7v instead of 12v (unless you like to do monster 3D rendering sessions for a few weeks), drops noise drastically
just use the 5v line and the 12v line as + and -
(no earth) the voltage differential is 7v so you wont need to usa a resistor, if you still need large airflow then look at Panaflo fans (made by panasonic) 21db quoted @12v

Re:I'm not done
A few chargebacks maybe, but I got nailed by a fraudulent transaction on PayPal and they didn't seem to care at all. There argument is that they are a payment medium and as such they don't have responsiblity over what happens! Absolutely ridiculous - I think they should have similar regulation to a bank or a credit card service, as they certainly provide a similar service. My problem was to do with the fact that UK PayPal users had (have?) no real protection from fraud (especially from their absurb Seller Protection Program - it's anything but!).
Please feel free to read what happened and also the email transcript between PayPal and myself - some interesting reading!
Any advice gratefully received! -
I'll be getting oneThis is good news. I have never been able to play old games on emulators without using a proper joystick. If WinUAE works with this I will get one straight away for WinUAE and MAME. Hopefully C64 emulators will support it as well.
My personal choice of joystick is probably the most popular joystick used with the Amiga. I present... The Zipstick:

Canon EOS 300It's excellent! I've been using it for a year or two now in the UK and have had no problems. It's really easy to use, it has an excellent autofocus system that you can actually *trust* and use all the time (unlike some!).
I can't really fault it. Well one minor thing: it's made of plastic - it could be better if it was metal or magnesium, but that would just make it much heavier. The EOS 300 (often called Rebel-something in other countries?) I think is Canon's best selling SLR anyway - which says quite a lot on it's own.
In fact I love it so much, that I've just this minute put it on eBay so I can upgrade to the EOS 300D (digital) which is even better (albeit about 8 times more expensive!)

64bit vs 32bit
So, correct me if I am wrong, but isn't what the inquirer saying is that intel could be repackaging the xenon processor as an pentium.....
I thought the xenon was 64 bit, and ran 32 bits under emulation much slower than current pentiums.... So, I think they may be barking up the wrong tree..
Intel just found a way of squeezing more cache on the chip!
