eBay
The non-slim PS3 is discontinued. Did the justification document say the government was buying from a distributor of new Sony product or from the secondhand market?

Who is this their that you speak of? Look around and you'll find them much cheaper, and they work just fine.

Re:Floating?
Either way we could have a lot of fun with this, we just need a few red balloons and volunteers to be "DARPA agents". Yes, of course we could just post disinformation, but wouldn't it be more fun to get participants to post disinformation with conviction and confidence be behind it? F'en with people is so fun.
OK, good to go -- I've just ordered three red weather balloons on eBay.

Re:Not a chance
I keep seeing all these posts playing the 'minority' crowd who do rare odd little things, all of a sudden everyone at Slashdot seems to be a hiker or in some rare spot where there is no coverage. I mean I feel for the people who live in the middle of nowhere Nebraska, but for 99% of the time I have to get through Los Angeles traffic like millions of others and not every American is traveling every other month to a foreign country.
Businesses are not out to appeal to a small crowd or else they would be bankrupt.I see this more as leading the way for other cell phones to provide built in GPS, I mean you cannot even get a cell phone that doesn't have a camera built into it and even the Ipod Nano's come with cameras. Phones in the future should come with everything built into it, including GPS.
As for taking it mobile, I bought a nice $9 solar charger that can charge my cellphone/ipod/garmin and supposedly it can run a laptop but I am skeptical of hooking it up. Not Googles problem that you don't have access to power for a couple days, call in the National Guard.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320434382609&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:ITI did something real corny by attaching the solar unit to the top of my hat and the usb cord down into my backpack to run my bulky Garmin C550. I can listen to music from it and it announces directions when I am mountain biking or hiking in Yosemite.
I recently took it with me on my Yosemite trip and it followed me on all the trails, even up to half dome and all the way around to Glacier Point. -
Re:Welcome to my money pit!
http://cliste.sailwhatcom.com/ is a guy in Washington that imports from the manufacturer in HK, so you'd get it quicker if you order from him... he sells stuff in enclosures though, so there's a bit of a markup for the middleman and final assembly bit.
If you want to order direct from the mfg and don't care about finished enclosures, they have an ebay site at http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Ananiah-Electronics where I believe they also sell the enclosures as separate purchases. Seller is on the level and has provided excellent support for me.
The RF40315T-x model can take either 6v or 9v-40v DC through a stepdown transformer, so you can directly wire it to a battery in the car. Works pretty well, although you'll get drop-outs from time to time so don't use any logic that trips based on the first "I'm not here any more" signal. I don't know if your software currently supports them but the protocol is fairly easy to figure out so you could roll your own if needed.
Good luck! -

eBay feedback
They'll nix feedback just like other sites nix reviews, if they determine that in their judgement, they think the item was bought for the sole purpose of entering negative feedback, for example.
And an expansive, ever increasing list of reasons.
sellers will no longer be able to leave negative/neutral feedback for buyers
And a comprehensive feedback removal policy.
Examples:
- they removed my feedback to him even though it was the truth
- eBay now removes feedback automatically from buyers
But at least they are honest enough and tell you (somewhat) what they will remove.
Most people casually browsing the site however (just as most people browsing retailers sites) have no idea that sites provide policies that allow negative ratings to be stricken from the record, and their effects on "stars" and rating score to be removed, at the whim of someone whose interests are in more sales.

Re:Autodesk will lose
I had a stupid shithead company do that to me when I tried to sell my DVD of "Hunt for Red October".
Well, it sure was effective. The thing is, these guys have to file a takedown notice for each individual offence, as eBay won't just start taking these things down automatically. Someone has to complain about an item before eBay will act on it. At which point, eBay doesn't want to get involved in the middle of the dispute, they just remove the controversial item which lets them off the hook in any case. But didn't do the content producer much good in this case I would say...

Re:A fool and his money are soon parted.
Good question... the most expensive walk-behind lawn mower I can find online is "only" $1,999. And that's not technically a push mower; it drives itself – most all decent ones do that, though, so I don't think it would be possible to spend much money (much less to spend that much) and get a real "push" mower.

Ebay "Watch this item" - history repeats itself
Ebay broke the "Watch this item" feature on their auction pages a few weeks back. It appeared to affect Firefox and not IE. The Ebay developers' first response was the same as this situation - "It works for me". That's terrible customer relations and reflects even poorer developer experience. Did Ebay lay off a bunch of their seasoned developers and trade in for high schoolers?

Re:Sorry, this is eBay's fault.
$5 including shipping for something that sells locally for $35 is worth the two week wait. $85 for an ARM9 development platform with LCD touch screen - gimme!
Or you could buy it directly for only $5 more... $105 ($85+20 shipping) on ebay, versus $110+free shipping.
All those cheap bits and bobs you can also buy directly from places like dealextreme.com There's really not all that many good deals on ebay these days. -
Re:Sorry, this is eBay's fault.
As a occasional eBay user that posted an item last weekend, I can definitely say eBay is having problems.
1) Late last night, my listing and many others kept coming up as not being available.
2) Sometimes the description for a listing is shrunk down to half a visible line of text.
3) Sometimes the description for a listing is nothing empty space where you scroll down for three or four 'pages' only to find the eBay footer with nothing else, no place a bid button or whatever is usually at the bottom of a listing.
I've seen this on Firefox 3.5.2 and 3.5.3 after clearing all cache, cookies, whatever, then logging straight back into eBay.
IMO the eBay UI continues to suck even more. I can't believe no one has built anything to compete with them.
Though, the great deals from Hong Kong and China on various bits and bobs are definitely worth it. $5 including shipping for something that sells locally for $35 is worth the two week wait. $85 for an ARM9 development platform with LCD touch screen - gimme!

Dreamcast is still being used
I know people that still use old video game systems. I got an old Atari 2600, Sega Genesis, and Nintendo 64 system myself. My brother-in-law has a Sega Saturn.
Half.com has a list of Dreamcast video games and they are so cheap that it doesn't make sense to pirate them anymore. I remember the Dreamcast was the first system to get a mod chip to play pirated games.
Anyway Half.com shows the Sega Dreamcast for sale here for those who want to buy a system.
Basically you can buy a lot of cheap Dreamcast games and a Dreamcast system for cheaper than the cost of a brand new PS3, XBox 360 etc system to emulate Dreamcast games on, not that there is a Dreamcast emulator that works yet for those systems.
:)Sega had a good product but had poor marketing and the PS2 and Gamecube outmarketed the Dreamcast and also had more popular games. Like the Gamecube had the Mario, Donkey Kong, Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, etc games, and the PS2 had Toy Story, Star Wars, and many other popular games. Suddenly the Sonic series didn't seem that interesting anymore to gamers, until later when recreated for the other consoles when Sega went software only and dropped their consoles.

Re:Good luck
"As to the OP's question... whatever happened to using a KVM?"
Still requires a video card.
My question is has he tested the motherboard to see if it'll boot without a video card? I've seen many a board that would error if a card wasn't found. If a card is required then just deal with the $6 a month, or if you really wanna do something get a 9 watt Geforce 7300 for under $20 on ebay which would use $8 in electricity a year at 10 cents/kw-hr.
But according to this chart even the greatest 3D video cards of 2006 only used 30 watts at idle, which is $26 a year, and if this is a old P4 then it's probably not even using a 3D card as modern as that. I'd say just leave the card in there and not worry about it, it's probably costing a dollar or two a month at most. -
Re:Vaccum Tubes?
I think they have a lot of old stock too.. I ordered some nixie tubes on ebay from a guy in Russia a few years ago, and the box looked like it was at least 40 years old.

deflecting the shattering of the shattering!
I compared it to a touchscreen because that's the only all-in-one PC I know of. I don't where you shop, but touchscreen isn't that expensive. So add $100 for your touchscreen. Now deduct $100, because the iMac is 24" not 22". Now look at the fact that the iMac is better RAM, and better Video card, and you'll see that the price is pretty much identical.

Re:If you can't remember that far back, wikipedia
Luckily you dont have to go to a thrift store for an 8 track player http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m38.l1313&_nkw=8+track+player&_sacat=See-All-Categories that took 20 seconds. Also, 8 tracks were popular when I was a child, in the early-late 70's. Thats 30 years, not 16. In 17 years a DVD player or blu Ray will be fine. Get some archival quality discs and go to town.
-
Re:There is no such thing
Looks pretty easy to play back an 8-track to me! http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38&_nkw=8-track&_sacat=See-All-Categories Is data really what the parents had in mind though? What are you thinking of putting in there? I liked the idea one of the early posts had about pieces from the wallpaper of the baby room and stuff like that.

Re:Quite neat, actually.
They're not rare in Soviet Russia! Joking aside, these VFDs are not that rare. Like some kind of state-sponsored labor monster run amuck, these (and all kinds of other vacuum tubes) were produced by the trainload during the heyday of the Cold War. They can now be picked up for a few dollars on eBay from sellers in Russia and the former Soviet republics. Of course the US produced its fair share of tubes as well, but the vacuum tube era seems to have lasted much longer in Eastern Europe than here (particularly in military applications), and lots of the common NOS tubes in the US have been used up in guitar and stereo amps. In the strange world of vintage vacuum electronics it is often the more exotic looking items covered in Cyrillic that are cheap and cheerful, and the US and UK parts that are rare and coveted.
It would be interesting to know what product these VFD tubes were initially intended for; maybe they were used in calculators given the number of digits. The US pretty much jumped directly from Nixies and Numitrons right to LEDs and LCDs, but I'm betting that in Eastern Europe the adoption of LED technology was more slow and there needed to be a display technology to fill the gap. I think my suspicions may be correct given this eBay aucion where a Russian manufactured VFD clock is for sale - the description says it supposedly was manufactured in 1982 when a similar product in the US would be LED for sure.

Re:This is not exactly a new device...
You need an electron gun and some electron optics to make the beam,
Check, old 19" TV tube... all the parts are there.
and then the section where the RF interacts with the beam, either a helix or a series of coupled resonant cavities.
Again, can be found in other surplus tech.
but screw it, just buy one....

Re:Probably just the first step
The simple fact is that PayPal has no way of knowing which side is in the right.
I partly agree with what you're saying, but a big problem here is that eBay has effectively shut out all other forms of payments to further their Paypal monopoly. To quote from them: "Checks, money orders, and bank wire transfers arenâ(TM)t allowed for most eBay purchases. "
If eBay still allowed USPS money orders as payment, in addition to avoiding the 2-3% Paypal fees, unscrupulous buyers would have a strong disincentive to lie about not receiving their items; the USPS can and does investigate cases of mail fraud, and mail fraud is a felony. Paypal, on the other hand, could give a rat's ass whether the buyer is lying about not receiving the item...

In about 3 or 4 years when current Macbook Pros are up on eBay...
Actually MacBook hold their value pretty well on eBay. eBay has them listed as having relatively high prices. Right now a 17" 2.33 GHz Core Duo is listed above $1200. That's more than 2 year old, I'm typing this on a 17" 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo that's 2 years old.
Actually that's what I plan on doing when I get a new one, I'll scrub the disk and do a clean install of OS X, then auction it on eBay. Not half but I expect to get at least a 1/3 of the cost of the new one.

Re:Yes
Because A) It restricts you to an -expensive- platform, x86 Mac OS X B) I believe you need to pay Apple I think like $99 to get it on the app store
A) $199: Apple Mac Mini Intel Core Duo Processor 1.66 Ghz 607LLA on aBay, free shipping.
B) True, but GPL is about Freedom, not freebeer, nor a free redistribution and marketing channel. I know you were just referring to a barrier for putting it on the app store as a free app, but I think a lot of people are confusing "Freedom" with "it shouldn't cost me any money for things that are completely out of the software developer's control." -
Old tech is the best tech.

Re:Moon
The movie is just so bland. It's a movie about the message, one of those artsy political movies that doesn't need any semblance of flow. The people who watch it will already be well versed in the mantra it preaches. However, V for Vendetta and Equilibrium both set out to entertain with an undertone of the 1984 mantra. This lets people take in the meaning without having to put forth any thought.
By flow, do you mean explosions and special effects, or did you have something else in mind? Given the two appalling films you compared it to, it's not surprising you switched off after half an hour, but I don't suppose you've even read the book? It's not necessary for understanding the film, but it might help (as would watching the entire film instead of the first 30 minutes). I hope you realise that the cinematography and sets were intentionally bland to reflect the world it is set in? That it is not in fact 'preaching a mantra' whatever that means, but is remarkably ambivalent about drawing a firm conclusion (like the novel), other than that totalitarianism in all its forms is inhuman?
I'm not sure what you mean by 'movie about the message', but there's far more going on in 1984 than in either of the films you compared it to, and it functions on a lot of different levels, not just a didactic one. The script is pretty good too - in comparison to something like Equilibrium which I suspect has more gun-shots than words. I suppose 1984 is not as slick as the newer films in terms of costume, camera-work, explosions, and implausible acrobatics while firing small-arms, but it has far more interest and long term appeal than those films, and far more depth than much of the flummery which passes for entertainment nowadays.
PS You don't put forth thought or preach a mantra, it's impossible to receive propaganda (unless it's in the mail), albeit cannot be used at the end of a sentence, and latter has two motherfucking t's.
PPS Get off my lawn.
