Re:why is ebay singled out?
If you've looked at eBay, there is more then just the buy-it-now auction type. There are multiple auction types depending on what type of items you're selling. As far as eBay being singled out, I admit there are other auction sites which are probably doing as good, but none of them are as well known to common luser as eBay. Now think about searchh engines... Doesn't Google feel that same type of way? even ppl who don't own computers know what google is. That's called visibility. Google going in the business of running an auction site, it has alot of visibility compared to other auction sites competing with eBay, not because it's better established (it's not even open yet, no customer-base) but because they're already getting lots of visits at their page b/c of their search engine services.
The conclusion is that you can offer the best product in the world but if you have no visibility to your target audience, you won't sell.

Oblig. Answers
I'm involved with a project that is looking to develop an online community for technology oriented business customers.
Sell your idea to ebay, they might like you. (and the highest bidder wins!)
If you could develop an online community to encourage collaboration and information sharing, what features would you want included?
That's easy, BitTorrent.
How would you go about including features that are widely available in other places (weblogging, message boards, wiki) and generating buy-in from customers.
1) Visit homepages of said OSS
2) Get the sources
3) Right-Click Ctrl-V
4) Get headache integrating code from multiple projects^W4) Discover 'magical' missing libraries^W4) Consider rewriting everything with existing code as reference^W4) Give up^W4) ????

Mac and Phoebus a good match
I am a long time Mac fan, I read the article yesterday and found a great place on EBay (http://stores.ebay.com/The-Mobile-Hotspot [ebay.com]) for the 3G Phoebus. I bought one for $249 after rebate ! The KR1 is $299 from Kyocera and was out of stock. I heard it has a lot of technical problems. The Phoebus just like David Pogue said. It is really cool, really easy to use, I am really happy and would recommend it to other Mac fans.

alternative #2, cool laptopYou could simply buy a nice, old laptop that -=SHOCK=- works on your lap, such as the one I'm using right now. A 233MHz PII with 128 MB RAM and Debian Sarge is more than most people need for the usual browsing. They are small and don't burn the skin off your legs and lap. Just check the specs to make sure the video is at least 1024x768 16 bpp and you are good to go. Mine has 196 MB of ram and gets a little slow running Juk, but it's a great machine. Mepis, Sarge or Etch should set up in about 40 minutes. For less than $200, you won't lose much if things don't work out.

Mondaine Don't Rush watch
I have a neat watch from Mondaine (makers of Swiss Railways watches) that only has one hand, and little hashmarks that show the minutes in 5 min increments. It's very minimalist - after all, if you have a good enough eye, one hand is all you need - and it never fails to confuse people when they see it. (Someone has it on ebay.)

Re:All I want from scanner manufacturers
$1000 doesn't sounds like too much if you really spend that much time pissing about scanning.
And I found it in like 2 minutes

Re:Vastly different than Touchscreen keyboards
Wow, I just saw one of thoes for the first time last week. They're really cool. A friend of mine was folding one of them up and taking it between work and home with him because he liked it so much, and he only had one because you can't get them any more. He said they were going for about $500 on eBay. I would say that's pretty special.

Re:Misinformation abounds
"F there were 10 Xbox 360s sitting around for sale somewhere, someone would already have bought them and put them on eBay for a healthy profit."
Oh please!
http://search.ebay.com/Microsoft-Xbox-360-Game-con sole
People really need to see for themselves just how low the demand for the 360 is.
It seems Xbox fans have done a decent job of getting people to believe that 360s are going for incredible prices on eBay.
There are huge numbers of un-bid 360s just sitting on eBay. The majority of 360s are going for just barely above retail - most likely a net loss for the seller when you include tax and all the effort to buy the thing and put it up for auction and then ship it.
The only high prices for 360s on eBay are for people's buy it now numbers.
With how few 360s have sold worldwide and the tiny number of people bidding for and the almost retail prices they are paying on eBay, Microsoft has a full scale fiasco on their hands with the 360.
Outside of a fairly small group of diehard Xbox fans, demand or interest in the 360 looks to be about zero. -
Re:Biggest question
I don't know if it was the
.wmf exploit, but there was an exploit for sale on eBay during the first week of December, 2005. This was referenced in the Full-Disclosure mailing list, which is archived at seclists.org (among other places). the auction may have been a hoax, but eBay cancelled it anyway. -

Hummm 750 does really seem to be ignoring IMO. It might not be as high as others but maybe that because people who can get there hands on one of them might like to keep it seeing as theres a shortage. -
Re:On purpose
"I think at this point we can all agree that the shortages are not intentional, at least not anymore. They're reaching the point where retailers and consumers are starting to not care about the product, and that's a bad thing for them."
360s on eBay are hardly fetching a premium anymore so I'd say there really isn't a shortage anymore. Shortages justify bundles, which are the only way either Microsoft or the retailer make any money off a console sale. Just try to buy a 360 locally without shelling out for several games at the same time. A shortage also implies desirability, which is great marketing, it keeps the hype going longer. People who wouldn't of bothered with the console might buy one at Walmart because this might be their "only chance".
eBay Premium 360 price. I can buy a 360 cheaper on eBay(including shipping) than locally because of the stupidly high sales tax in Tennessee. If I wanted one... -
Re:There is no shortage of xbox 360s on ebay
Wow, just checked:
http://search.ebay.com/Microsoft-Xbox-360-Game-con sole
It looks like not only are 360s selling for cheap, but large numbers of people are having trouble selling their 360s at all.
One has to think that the console world has pretty much written off the 360. -
XBox 360 not selling at $299. Price cut needed. The XBox 360 just isn't selling. Maybe they're hard to find at retail, but there are thousands available on eBay. An unopened core system just sold for $255, well below the $299 list price. The speculators who bought at the launch are getting killed.
Microsoft will probably have to relaunch the product at a lower price point, and lose even more money per unit.
How much longer will Microsoft's stockholders put up with this money drain? Microsoft lost money on every original XBox, so, hoping to make some money in round two, they increased the price for the XBox 360. But the customers aren't buying.

Yes you have to factor in shipping, but if you buy multiples you can get that down.
These are generally Clone cards that work every bit as good as the originals.
The orginals were just Intel v.92 modems anyway.

Re:Car Keys
Alright, I'm a [casual] locksmith, so I really shouldn't tell you this, but oh well...
If you have two original keys, do the following:
Grab yourself a $12 or so transponder key from eBay.
Get someone to cut the key. Your local home depot can possibly do this - your local locksmith almost certainly can. I don't know about Wal-Mart.
Put the first original key in the ignition, turn to on.
Wait 5 seconds, turn off.
Very quickly insert the second original key, and turn on.
Wait 10 seconds for the SKIS indicator light to flash, and a tone to be emitted.
Within 60 seconds, throw in the new key, and turn it on.
About 10 seconds later, a tone will sound, and the SKIS indicator stops flashing, goes solid for 3 seconds, then turns off. This means the new key is programmed.
Congratulations, you have a $12 new key rather than a couple of hundred dollars. There is a 50 cent copy solution, but it involves some serious work removing the transponder system. It's easier to just program a new key yourself.
For what it's worth, some of the owners manuals describe the above process.
