The obvious point here should be that the countyr was sellign them too cheap. Wasting taxpayer dollars. They should have sold them on ebay where they could have gotten much more than $50 without the liability of riots.

Re:Wanted: New Manual Typewriter
I think a better idea would be finding a new manual typewriter that isn't outrageously expensive.
Define outrageusly expensive. I remember I was operating on an old underwood with carbonless paper as I didn't have a ribbon till I was pretty much forced to get a Brother typewriter or risk being marked down a full grade. The daisywheel brother cost there and abouts of $300. Here is an image of what I was working with.
If you want a manual... they are still made somewhat
https://www.drleonards.com/detail.cfm?IID=21901&ke y=10199001&CFID=264389&CFTOKEN=96837244
Anyhow... in 1985 you could find this at your local sears in adult and kids models IIRC... price mark was $50ish to $120ish. You'd likely enjoy better luck getting a moderatly modern sub 50 year old Royal or perhaps a Smith Corona or Olivetti Linea 198 which is still made. My geekyness doesn't include model numbers for Royal or Smith Corona... as they were on the back and needed no plugs I never has cause to look. I somehow remember the Royal being one of the easier manuals to work with... layout more contemporary and without odd ball keys missing like the numbers 1 and 0.
But if you think $90 is over priced... well sorry. Unless you hit the used circuit and get lucky expect to spend $100 to $200 easy on a manual typewriter easily if not $350. These suckers are pretty much reserved for oddballs who travel to remote locations yet still want to get some writing done. The Olivetti likely has to be special ordered from a typewriter shop... and those suckers are getting harder and harder to find as printers are in demand and typewriters just not. -
It could possibly be even faster........with this nifty invention.

Usually five or six sprays is all it takes. As your computer sends data, each bit also carries hundreds of invisible WiFi Speed Spray(TM) "scrubbing" molecules. It works at the speed of light. and even penetrates lead walls (not even Superman can do that!). Within
.0025 seconds, the entire path between you and the receiver is cleaned, scrubbed, polished, and sanitized. -

eBay runs on Sun, not IBM.Is that why powerhouses such as Ebay use it as well as other IBM products such as Websphere?
That was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away. eBay now runs on Sun.

Re:ink...
"I don't see the math."
That's cause you're not factoring in the great deal that can be had by selling your printer on ebay for a penny and charging $16.99 for shipping. Of course, the buyer won't know whether they're getting a 1/2 full pen, or a 1/20 full pen, they're gonna expect it to run out quickly cause it's a starter pen!!!
I'm swithing to inkjets today. -
Subway dropped sandwich stamps due to eBay scamSubway no longer gives out those little stamps you stick onto a card, and then get a free sandwidch when you fill the card with ten stamps.
Why? People were stealing entire rolls of stamps from the shops and selling them on eBay.
If you have legit stamps you have until some time this month to redeem them. Then Subway's "customer loyalty" program is gone forever.
BASTARDS. I used those stamps legitimately and consistently for years; Now these jerks have cost me my 10% discount.

Re:I finally figured out what market the Mini is fI realized that nobody in their right mind would spend $600.00 on a 3-year old G4 when they could have a mini which is almost twice as fast for the same cost.
That thing can still boot OS 9, right? I'm sure you'll still find demand. Going price on eBay seems to be at about $600.

Re:Silent PSUs are a touchy subject for me...
Oh one of those little $5 devices from ebay. Compusa has similar ones now for about $12 that are a little more durable.
Note: These are random ebay links from a search for ATX tester. Feel free to choose others or none at all and google for places that sell them. I did not check prices or anything else besides just the pictures for examples of what I'm talking about.
Here's an example of the product I got at compusa:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item =6787868778&category=51064&rd=1
Here's an example of the cheaper ones:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item =6788579887&category=3670&rd=1
And then these are popping up more frequently, supposedly better than the other two:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item =6788023833&category=3670&rd=1
However, just be aware that the supposed ends that test the floppy and hdd, they dont test the voltage correctness. So if you reverse the 5v and 12v leads on a hdd or fdd connector while doing a PSU mod, this device will still show them as being good. It just tests the presense of any voltage period on those connectors. Other than that it is fine. -

Harware Hacking
Here's a project for ya:
- Go to eBay and buy one. (wait for the DRMO auction for the 7-track unit)
- Build a box to acess the drive - not real hard for a good hardware hacker
- build a Linux driver to access it (presuming no driver exists already for the card you connect it to)
- get the tapes via FOIA
Conclusion: get the data for next to nothing.
Oh, yeah, one last step:
- ship the 245,000 smackers you didn't use to my house, in .9999 gold coins please. -
Re:Have you heard of Nero?
check this link out for 9 track tapes on ebay You can also buy used 9 tracks tapes from an ebay store as well. The guy has about 120 of them. As for 7 track drives I don't know. I found this on wikipedia. And what is really interesting if you click on the picture you can see the picture was taken from an old NASA video! Here is another picture I found of 2 different IBM 7 track drives here from this article.

Pentium M is all Intel has going for it.
But what I want to know is if a similarly-clocked DEC Alpha 21164 system is equivalent to a similarly-clocked Pentium 3 as advertized here.
I can't believe Intel and AMD sucked all key IP from Alpha and abandoned such an efficient architecture. Still, they gotta recover from the unnecessary research to compete against eachother, instead of actually scaling Alpha with refabs.
I, for one, don't welcome these Intel and AMD overlords! -

People regularly sell gold and items in the game on eBay and other such auction sites. I'm sure many people could make a decent living selling this stuff to "rich westerners" as they see it.

Re:/.ed"Assuming "ebay chips" are, say, 5% efficiency, we're looking at an overall system efficiency of 1-2%. Yeah, great way to save gas."
exactly. A quick search of ebay turns up several $10 peltiers, sucking down 170 watts each. That's ~14 amps each (170w divide 12 volts). Another search of ebay shows that car alternators are usually 100 to 160 amps, with 160amps being "high output" and 100 being closer to the norm. That's 100 amps to run the entire car, from radio to headlights to... well, you get the idea, in addition to charging up the car battery. Some alternators go as low as
This little "invention" (which i use losely, since all they did is reinvent the wheel) "blows hot air through five Peltier chips". That's 5 Peltiers each pulling 14+ amps each, so u got 70 amps of the car's total 100 amp alternator powering the peltiers! So now you get to decide if you want headlights or A/C. Oh and don't forget you wont be able to start your car since these will drain your 600amp battery in no time, and with the alternator constantly powering the peltiers it sure wont be charging the battery. Everytime you turn on the headlights, radio and A/C at the same time you're sucking battery power. Carry jumper cables with you!
Obviously whoever judged the constest knows very little about peltiers.

Hi - yes the first one had small text that says (more available) - I don't know if that is a ebay feature or if the seller did it.
But the CS20 was the pinnacle of consumer level compute density - the had 2 (!) alpha's in 1U. This is the model:

Where's the OSS ATM?
I'm probably showing my ignorance, but on the surface, the code for an ATM doesn't look all that impossible.
I'd think a Wx/python stack could be written is fairly short order that would handle most of the typical ATM functions.
Lord knows if they got just 1 guy on the project who had some experience designing UI's it would be a superior product to what's currently deployed in one location.
And the banks who are still running the OS/2 machines obviously aren't in a hurry to spend money on new hardware and software.
Someone would have to figure out how to interface with the hardware but it's an IBMPC-compatible if it's running OS/2 and actual units can be picked up on eBay for modest money.
One could commoditize the ATM market with an OSS software stack, and standards could be followed such that people could integrate COTS card readers, screens, bill dispensers, etc. into whatever plastic front is appropriate. Then it's not too hard to implement smart-cards biometrics, whatever because anyone can innovate.
So are there any banking developers here who will kindly point out the folly of my ways? -
ToughbookYou say you use both mac's and PCs but if you haven't decided on what equipment to use in the fields I highly recommend the Panasonic Toughbook. Some are "tougher" than others, water proof vs water resistant for example, but all of them can take a severe beating and keep working. Legacy ports too so it's easy to interface with old Garmin gear.
I have a 72 (replaced by the 73 in recent years) and it's been everywhere with me. They're a little heavy, but you can drop them from a meter onto concrete surfaces and have them work so that's worth the extra weight. There are some solar chargers available too, for times when you're far away from the grid.
If you're strapped for cash and don't mind a slightly slower machine you can usually find good deals on ebay. The P3-800 range - my machine - can be had for about $500, and the lower end PS-300's come as cheap as $200.

Layout is a classic, actually
Actually - have you seen the keyboards from good old unix workstation times? Or terminals? Namely Sun keyboards (a classic of their own)? It's just the same good old layot revived. And it's sure better than lately popular keyboards with all those media, mail and browser shortcuts around (the only useful feature? Calculator shortcut on microsoft internet keyboard. But even to use this you have to disable nearby sleep button first.)
(p.s. And it's damn handy too once you get used to it.)
P.S. Image for all the youngsters: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item =5788185735&category=20328&rd=1 (couldn't find a better image on a short notice ;)) -
Re:Quite a bit.I can't tell the difference between CD and MP3 192 and CD and Vorbis 128...
I agree that OGG is excellent. In fact, I can often hear weird tinny-sounding artifacts and clicks in MP3 even at 160, while OGG sounds clean. Moreover, the sound of OGG is more, how should I say this, luscious than MP3, even when I compare OGG 80 mbps to MP3 128.
By the way, you should try that compile someone did that allowed Vorbis to encode to -2 quality at 500 BITS per second. It sounded quite amazing, considering the size...
This is what I have found in my own tests. Using Audiograbber (open-source cd ripper that supports ogg, LAME mp3 and more), I ripped several tracks into mp3 and ogg at different bitrates. I found, to my amazement, that I couldn't tell the difference between ogg at 80mbps (!) and CD most of the time. Now all of my music on my iRiver iHP-120 (around $200 for 20gb player on ebay) is in ogg, at about half the space that mp3's would take, and at better quality.
Also see this comparison of OGG, MP3 (LAME 3.91), WMA8, and MP3Pro at 64mbps and 128mbps, which I didn't believe until I reproduced the results with my own encoder.
