Re:ebay
At 128kbps, 4 minutes per song and 1,000,000 KB in a GB, you would be able to store 260 songs on a 1GB USB MP3 Player.
If your iPod is 40GB you will be able to store over 10,000 songs.
Now, both are portable and in both cases it is a piece of p1ss to plug your device into your computer and download/delete songs as you wish. I'm sure 260 songs (or over 17 hours (yes, I love google :) ) of play) should be enough for a PORTABLE music player (when you go on a short trip do you take your collection of 200 DVDs with you? No, you take just a few to get you through the trip).
And when you factor in the difference in price ($119 compared to $408, BOTH including delivery), I don't see why you would waste your money on an iPod.

Re:By how things are going...
But what if this guy gets your bid before then?

$500 is waaaay too much..
This is probably the worst article I've seen posted on making digital picture frames. I apologize if that hurts anyone's feelings, but a lot more thinking could have gone into the design and parts.
For starters, why not go to the flea market or ebay and pick up an ancient laptop? This gives you a cpu, motherboard, hard drive, network interface, and a display. I was able to find old, functional laptops for under $150 [ebay.com] on ebay.
I would pull the motherboard and mount it against the back of the display, then order a premium, custom built frame from a picture frame shop for ~$25-$100. You could be cheap and build your own, but $100 should get something nice and elegant. Another option would be to just pick up a pre-built frame and put in an insert cut to your spec.
For people not up to the skill level of configuring GNAA/Linux, they could simply boot to Windows and set their SHELL variable to a screen saver's executable for cycling pictures. There is one built-in to XP, but many freebies are out there for previous builds of Windows.
Personally, I would opt for a wireless NIC and mount a share where the pictures are to be stored. That way I could simply copy new pictures over to the system from my main computer. kd -
Re:Earlier?
Bingo! I'm always surprised by the terrible grasp of reality these 'smart' people have. A little like this Einstein here who thinks law and medicine would be a bad career choice... Thinking that IT would give him freedom, I suspect FREE as in UNEMPLOYED. University is a self-sustaining system that unfortunately allows people that are ill-equipped to handle the real world harbour the illusion that memorizing heaps of textbooks amounts to anything in said real world...

Re:Laptop Smashy Bitchy
Decapitated laptops are very useful things. There are some people relieving ThinkPad 570s of their LCDs and selling them on eBay because they can get more money for the parts than the intact laptop. Well the more fool them.
Very soon I will be putting a new server up on the Internet. It's one of those decapitated ThinkPad 570s I mentioned. HTTP, SFTP, a Debian mirror, UT Server, Quake III Arena Server...so much for so little! Throw a nice phat hard drive and an Intel 100/Pro Realport NIC in there and you're golden. For a lot less money than one of those Via EPIA Mini-ITX boxes cost. I like my decapitated 570 so much, I'm getting a second one for a firewall.
I also have had good luck with another decapitated lappie...this one lost its LCD in a tragic accident. However, the rest of it is completely functional, and my buddy Don is going to do something interesting with it one of these days.
I have some interesting ideas on how to mount these headless ThinkPad 570s that I intend to explore...there will be some modding in the future. I want to keep these in as little desktop "footprint" as possible, and I got a little inspiration from when I was washing dishes after a meal. Stay tuned. -

Re:Dark Tower?
Almost, it's an early 80s game (1981). You can usually find one on eBay, for example this one.
Another great electronic/board game hybrid was Stop Thief, which is a 70s game (1979). Also easy to find on eBay. -
Late model typewriters did this
I remember in High School (1991) using typewriters that had a serial (maybe parallel) port on the back. you could hook them up to a PC and use it as an output device.
Try looking for typewriters like this, the work is already done for you.
If you're wanting an OLD 100% mechanical typewriter, ebay has those too. You'll need to create some USB trickery that accepts serial data and decodes it into individual characters. then sends a signal down a wire associated with the appropriate character, which you amplify and activate solonoids with. solonoids are about the only thing strong enough to fully stroke a mechanical typewriter key with any speed.
Disclaimer: I have no idea how you'd do this. -
Re:Diamonds aren't rare
First off, my diamond is from Canada. A very very small portion of diamonds on the market are "conflict diamonds."
Secondly, I can almost certainly sell my diamond for a large portion of what it is worth. Perhaps not to a diamond dealer, who has access to wholesale diamonds. But it can be sold in the secondary market for something close to what I paid for it. That referenced stone on eBay is similar to the one I bought, but smaller.
Finally, the oil you pump into your car has cost more lives than any amount of diamonds. Do you feel guilty every time you drive? Or every time you use a petroleum-derived product like plastic? Get off your high horse.

Re:bag phones?
Maybe it's a regional thing, not just an age thing..
I'm guessing you're talking about people carrying around car phones or briefcase phones in a bag, but the closest I've ever seen to a "phone in a bag" was the phone in the briefcase.
Ebay image of bag phone
Another image of bag phone
Yes, Motorola took their car phone and put it into a bag, added a bracket that plugged directly into the db-25 pin port on the phone's transceiver allowing collection to both a small camcorder battery and a hook for the phone's handset. They were typically configured to I believe 1.1watt operation but could be configured to 3watt. I saw them for sale just about everywhere that handheld phones were sold but as you can imagine there is little reason to get a big bulky bag phone if you had good reception with a handheld. -

Why?
I'm having trouble understanding why this is on slashdot - I mean, it's a piece of angled glass and an upside down laptop. It's not terribly innovative, since anyone who's ever looked at a prompter would probably say to themselves that, yes, if they had a piece of glass and nothing better to do with their time, then they, too, could make one. His solution isn't even a very good one, since it lacks the one essential feature of any prompter: namely smooth, variable speed scrolling. Without that, the reader's eyes will be moving down the page as they go, and the result will look very amateurish. Watch any newscast and realize that the anchors are reading off a prompter all the time, yet it's usually hard to tell, since they know their job, as does the prompter operator. Also, the bit about reflections only being a problem outdoors is ridiculous, since there are presumably lights in the studio, and any reflections at all will look terrible - sure you can minimize them by careful light placement, or you could just put a freaking shroud around the thing and save setup time.
Anyway, since most people in the business of making videos would be in a position to either rent one or buy one cheap, the whole thing just seems like a waste of time and bandwidth. Not unlike posting long rants on slashdot that nobody cares about... um... -
Re:Possibly not a sucker...
Except... in these sorts of games, you can make money by selling assets on eBay. He doesn't have to sell the land. He can use the land in the game to create other assets, and sell those instead. I don't know how he's going to make his money back on THAT, but take a look at what people sell on eBay:

If it's Not Broken......Don't Fix it.
I've dealt with these guys. They are satisfied with what they're getting out of that type of system and will keep it till the power surge blows it away. Hell, I wouldn't be suprised if some of them checked Ebay for replacement hardware. I'm sure they know were they put those 5.25 floppies.

There are...
weirder things being sold on ebay. Some guy is farming completed Animal Crossing saves.

Re:Economic Inevitability
Basically this means Blizzard and Sony would lose horribly if someone from these sites found out about a "spy" and they'd take a hit in the pocketbook that would make Bill Gates turn white.
Where do you get the information about lawsuits from? There wouldn't need to be any spying. All it would take is some eBay searching and a compaint to the eBay VeRO Program. They don't have an "About Me" page on the VeRO information, but that doesn't mean that they aren't involved. eBay will bend over backwards to help them as long as they don't file a suit against eBay itself, like Tiffany did. -

Re:Sharp should sit up and take notice
The Sharp Zaurus is being discontinued in the USA while in Japan they are coming out with a new model.
You can pick up a Sharp Zaurus 5500 from ebay for under $200.
I've had mine now for almost a year with hardly any complaints.
I never really used the original Sharp OS on it because of its limited capabilities, but OpenZaurus is a great alternative.
Its functionality as a PIM really sucks but its available packages is really extensive
Its really no biggie to install OZ and can be ran directly from an optional SD card to save space on your internal RAM (16MB I believe.) Plus it has a CF slot available for your favorite card (wireless, ethernet, gps, IDE, etc) and the serial at the bottom for rs-232 compliant devices.
It really has saved me time and trouble at work using a wi-fi cf card, vnc client or rdesktop (user machines or server), konqueror, and a sd storage disk to hold everything (including my mp3s.)
It kills my battery ( 1-3 hours continous,) but if I just plug it in while I'm at my desk I have no issues at all. -

Obvious eBay cachet is limited compared with Apple cachet, and there may be real differences in part and build quality, wear leveling algorithmss, etc, not to mention the famous Apple fit & finish, but why reflexively dis eBay? -
Re:Sorry, Your screwed.
You save up the money by starting out with the cobbled hacks. Eventually you've done enough work and brought in enough money (probably slowly) that you can afford to buy the more expensive tools. It's like a beginner photographer might be stuck with a cheap used camera like an old manual SLR. But eventually, as you make and save money, you can get that Hasselblad or Sinar.

Slide/Film Scanners
I won a used Minolta DiMAGE II slide/film scanner on ebay for $162.50 a month ago.
I downloaded the GIMP for free.
Grokking the GIMP is available online.

Re:Flatbed scanners suck for slides
i have to agree that flatbed scanners with transparency adapter sucks. Some of the newer flatbed scanners have slide ports build in, you should check one of those. Or look for second-hand film scanners, you can get 2700 dpi film scanner[http://search.ebay.com/polaroid-film-scan
n er] for less than 50$, which will do a lot better than a transpareny adapter. -

You can find I8K parts on eBay; I bought a replacement motherboard there about a year ago when mine stopped working. IIRC, you can get a replacement motherboard for $150-$200.

Microsoft 3D Movie Maker.
3D Movie Maker is an old (1995) game MS made, it's aimed at kids, but you can do some very nice simple movie making with it.
I have YET to find anything simpler. You have actors, props, and text-boxes, and you place them, pick animations and costumes, then animate them manually (where you select animation frames) or automaticly (where they play out their pre-made animations at a preset speed).
You can record dialog right into the movie, and it's saved into the final movie file. (a .3mm file, which contains only the sound files and the animation details, so they are TINY. You can get an hour long movie with dialog and music in 20mb)
It comes with 45 built in actors, 21 props, and 11 pre-built backgrounds. (Each of them with multiple camera angles)
They only drawbacks are:
1. No easy way to group objects or move more than one at a time.
2. Can't save to .AVI/.MPG (You can use other tools to do this though)
3. No way to import your own backgrounds, actors, props, or textures. (This is changing though. We've just recently figured out the model format, and I've written a program that lets you import quake 2 models. It's still pretty early-beta quality software however.)
4. Annoying barney-like host. You can skip his intro movies and shut him up after that, you you never see him. He's still annoying though.
Another nice thing is there are PLENTY of movies made with it. I've got a 3DMM movie archive site, and I currently have 1344 movies, all in about 2 gigs of space. (That's the largest 3dmm site, but still far from all movies released).
So I suggest you check it out, if you're looking for something to make fun movies in, quickly.
You can often grab a copy on Ebay for under 10$.
A quick search shows only one copy on right now: 5 days to go (I'm not connected to the seller, BTW. I just did a search.)
You can download it on a few sites (google for "3dmm"), since MS seems to no longer care about it. (They don't even mention it on their site anymore). It's about a 200mb download.
Have fun! -
Re:When will it end?I'd love to see a V for Vendetta, although it would probably be done better as a TV mini-series, by British actors and in England.
I was a big watchman fan ages ago. I even have the limited edition Hardback (mine isn't for sale).
At the time everyone was for Arnie to play Dr Manhatten. TBH I can't see this movie being as good as the book.
