Re:Don't count on it
every page I visit seems to increases the Working Set by a couple of megs of ram.
It doesn't just "seem to", your impression is right, it does. There's been a nice bug for quite a few years (3? 4?) in the engine which causes the browser to not release most of the memory it consumes, and just use more and more.
It's very clear on some machines, less on others, it's worse when you use tabbed browsing a lot (the memory leak happens when you close a tab, the memory it used isn't always released)
The good thing is that this bug has been fixed in Mozilla 1.8 (the one that'll never get released, you know...)
The slightly less good one is that the fix will only land in Firefox when said firefox'll fuse with Gecko 1.8 (the current trunk), and thats Firefox 1.1
Summary: there is a memory leak bug in Firefox tabs, it's been known for years, it blows and can cause sever instabilities on some computers, it's completely random (aka you can be lucky and run FF np with 64Mb RAM, and you can be unlucky and have it hog 500Mb every time you use it) and worsens if you keep the same browser window (not tab, window) for extended periods of time. That bug still exists in Firefox 1.0.1 and will still be in 1.0.2, it'll be fixed in Firefox 1.1 which is supposed to be released in 2-3 months.
Recommandation: if you happen to get hit by the "CrappySlowMemoryHogFirefox" and can't bear it, don't switch back to MSIE, use Opera instead, it runs fine, is fast, has a quite low memory foot print and a quite good support of HTML and CSS.
Additional Informations: one of the great strengths of Firefox is the XUL extensions system, but it's also (obviously) it's biggest weakness: some extensions can have memory leaks on their own or cause slowness or crashs. One of the most well know "unstable" extension is "Tabbrowser Extension", which is arguably the best Tabbed Browsing extension feature wise, but is also the most bloated and dangerous one (and one of the worst and most random Firefox extensions, even the author himself says so).
If your firefox is unstable/slow and you use TBE, uninstall it or create a new "clean" profile before dissing FF...
Oh, BTW, about the extensions, do pay visits to websites like The Extensions Mirror, one can get true wonders and squeeze the best out of Firefox with the good extensions plugged in -

Re:How do I automatically kill history in Firefox?
Grab the Kiosk extension from extensionsmirror.nl.
Or you could go to Tools > Options > Privacy > Clear all (under Windows). -
What about extensions?
A quick google did give me this. (I haven't tested it though.)
I guess that basic features ought to be supported in the main installation, but I've never really needed my mail programs to redirect mail, since the mail servers I use have builtin redirect. -
what makes it better are the plugins, my top 5
here they are:
Adblock
Session Saver
Web Developer
IE View
Target Alert -
Is it the Devs who should worry about it?
I understand your point, being that the developers should incorporate that into the original design, but there are more than one extensions that allow the program to be able to do this. I believe this is, in part, because they are trying to keep the basic/core of the brower small and minimized, and then allowing users to select, download, and install only the extra extensions and options that they want. Why include a dozen different options like different RSS readers, stock tickers, built-in weather conditions, GMail notifier, etc. which only a minority of people will use when it will just complicate things and make the download size larger.
Keeping the file size down will not only attract those who still use dial-up, but also those who use dial-up, in most cases, have slower computers who do not have the extra RAM to spare for the extra features they don't want.
The Extensions Mirror (at http://extensionsmirror.nl/) has over 400 extensions for Firefox 1.0 compared to the 184 that Mozilla Update hosts, as well as themes and also extensions for Thunderbird.
Every extension you could probably desire for Firefox are out there; you just need to know where to look.
With the (what seems to be) ease of creating, and the popularity of extensions for Firefox, is it really the developer's responsibility to create and implement all of the features and extras that are desired, or wouldn't it be more pertinent to have the main developers focusing on the core of the browser, its security, or other related aspects and leave the rest to the enthusiastic aspiring coders out there? -
Re:why i still use opera
Firefox Extensions is the place for you. I'm presuming you have actually noticed that middle-clicking links makes them open in tabs instead of their requested target?
The two things you asked for are:
1) Tab Links (possibly Single Window, but this may be overkill).
2) Session Saver.
There are many more extensions there, so have a cruise round sometime and see what is on offer. Some of them, like AdBlock and FlashClick make browsing the web such a nice experience. -

Re:My picks
At least two of the above points can be currently achieved through the proper extensions:
Remember what tabs I was reading (and my place in those tabs) so if Mozilla crashes or I close it, I can go back to where I was instantly.
Add an HTML verifier to Mozilla. Let me choose an option from the menu, and Mozilla will verify the HTML of the page I'm viewing.
Web Developer Toolbar (includes many other useful tools)
Hope this has been helpful!

Re:stability?
Yes, there is an extention that does this, I use it all the time. It's called SessionSaver. For some reason it's hard to track down the version that works with firefox 1.0, but I've gotten it from:

Re:The only reason why I use Mozilla...
Try this extension. basics It mimics the mozilla method.

Re:Session history
Done for Firefox Here!
-
Re:SessionSaver
The old version of session saver works fine for me in Firefox 1.0. It did need repackaging (to bump maxversion to 1.0) and you can get the repackaged version at The Extensions Mirror, which is a great site for getting the latest extensions (some of which are not up to date on update.mozilla.org).
-
Re:Close, but so sigar.
Somebody else probably agrees with you. Check the Thunderbird Extensions section of The Extensions Mirror and see if there's anything in there you might be able to use.
-
Re:NAT
try miniT and session saver
-
Re:Your Sig (OT)
Well, you can download my extension from the popular extensionsmirror.nl site too, not sure how much vetting they actually do of extensions, but if one was known to be spyware or a trojan I'm pretty sure they'd take it down or at least warn you.
And you are welcome to inspect the contents of the XPI - it's just a renamed ZIP file. And the JAR in there is also a ZIP file by another name. The actual code (other than some RDF packaging stuff) is about 15 lines of Javascript that even a novice can probably follow, which does one thing and one thing only (reflow after page load while surfing on Slashdot.org). No, no spyware or trojans in there. -

Re:So, have the devs been listening?
I remember reading about how they were NOT going to implement minimize to tray becuase not all of the platforms thunderbird runs on have a system tray.
But hey that's what extensions are for

Re:My Biggest Problem
Looking on bugzilla.mozilla.org found bug 2920; from there got a link to this extension. Havn't tried it, but sounds like it should work.
Might be something you want to look at. -
Re: Session Saver
Session Saver.
Beware of the Tabbrowser extensions. Featurewise *everything* you'll ever need for tabbed browsing. But caused major performance and stability problems, not only for me ...
Bye egghat. -
Re:not upgrading firefox yet...
Another useful link "Updating extensions, using old ones on new builds" HTH, too (it did for me
:) -
Re:Workaround
Check out the thread devoted to Rebuilding TBE's featureset with other plugins at the mozillazine forums.
There are links to various small tab extensions so you can pick and choose the functionality you want.
This gives you only the features that you actually want without having to put up with the full Tabbrowser Extensions performance hit.
I use MiniT to give me drag and drop, all bookmarks in new tabs, and the order of focus, and BlankLast to prevent closing the last tab from closing the browser -
and Tabbrowser Preferencesoops, i forgot to mention you also need
yeah it's three extensions instead of 1 but seems to work better for me.. anyway.
i need a text file of addresses just to keep track of all the latest download sites for these extensions! arg.
-
Re:Save tabs?
TBE was good, but it got really bloated IMHO. i use Session Saver and miniT at the mo'. (both working in the new release). does what i need alright.
-
Re:not upgrading firefox yet...I am experiencing the same problem. You might find the Show Old Extensions plugin helpful (homepage is down, link goes to a mirror). It allows you to access old extensions' options dialogues, and to manually enable/disable them.
HTH.

*cough* ShowOldExtensions *cough*You will love this extension then:

the zoom thing there are many extensions availeble that do similar things but none do the exact same so partially agreed.
Tabs - Where have you been? please use the software first before you criticize it.
INNOVATIVE - Most software is like this, what makes a certain software (such as mozilla/ff) is the fact that it combines all of these.
Plus the main thing would be extensability. -

Re:ideas
TabBrowser extensions are massively bloated, and the number of options is bewildering, even to an experienced user. It is best to use some of the smaller extensions writtent to duplicate the functions you need.
For opening new window link in new tabs, use Single Window
I also use rue's rewritten implementation of Pike's Session Saver for the recovery of tabs after a crash (only happened once in recent memory, but useful still), and disable all the other features as they annoy me. This version is repackaged for 0.9
The last extension I use to do with tabs (don't think it was in TBE, but essential for me still) is Flowing Tabs, which shrinks the sizes of the tabs to the title text if it is short (otherwise keeps them default size), and continues many tabs onto a second or third and so forth line rather than shrinking them until you can't see what's written.

Re:magpieAlso useful for those onehanded browsing sessions are
Linky
Extension is a very simple addon to the context menu that provide you with the following:
* Opens all links in a selection in new tabs or windows
* Finds and opens link in plain text in a new tab or window
* Opens all links on page in new tabs or windows, etc.
and
JumpLink
The Jumplink extension allows you to skip through redirect links and jump directly to the target link
Why do I get the feeling the Slashdot community may find these of some assistance ;) -

that's funny...
...because i'm running ff0.9 w/ adblock right now and it works like a charm.
;just because it isn't on the extensions download site, doesn't mean it doesn work. if you had looked it up, you may have found that many others are using Adblock 0.5 d2 nightly 39 without any problems....
