Wow.
I thought this kind of thing only happened on Fark.com
I find it very funny that the first article in this thread has already been modded "Flamebait" There's going to be a LOT of flamebait here.
I even passed on the opportunity to moderate just to make this post :-) -
Re:IN SOVIET RUSSIA
It was originally a joke by Yakov Smirnoff. Then it turned into a meme on Fark, got added to their filters, and moved to Slashdot. Basically, the idea is to take a sentence, switch it around, and add "In Soviet Russia" (e.g., "You watch television." becomes "In Soviet Russia, television watches YOU!").
-
Re:Or how about this one...
I imagine the forums goons over at Fark and Something Awful have a lot to do with this particular cliche.
-
Re:In Soviet Russia...
See also fark.com, which turned the Soviet Russia thing into a cliche. As well as the domo-kun, cliche kitty, admiral ackbar, etc.
-
Re:In Soviet Russia...Unless I am mistaken, it is a reference to a Russian comedian named Yakov Smirnov. Back in the early 80's at the height of the Cold War he did his act in American night clubs, and a staple of the routine was to turn around some phrase, i.e. "In Soviet Russia, car drives you!" This was done to make light of the Russian government, and play on America's fear of communism.
Due to his extremely chipper demenaor and the fact that his routine rarely changed, he became an annoying cliche. In the years since the Cold War ended and stand up comedy became less popular he apparently retreated to Branson, Missouri and has a theater there.
Somewhat akin to the "all your base..." phonomeon, this "In Soviet Russia..." thing didn't become its own overused cliche until posters on FARK, the Slashdot of weird journalism, started adding Smirnov into their Photoshop contests, along with Admiral "It's A Trap!" Ackbar, the squirrel with the giant nuts, and that kitten that dies when you masrutbate.

Re: your sig
Hey, those Linux guys are more interesting than you might think....

Re:"Lost"
What about when I'm viewing Fark in Moz and middle-clicking (open in new tab) links at a furious pace? Or, even worse, using mouse gestures to drag over 5-10 links and simultaneously open them all in new tabs? In the particular case of Fark, the initial request for each link will go through the fark.com domain (for nav statistics, I suppose), but is immediately forwarded on to another domain.
Really, I guess those requests could be handled at 1 second or, preferably, user-specified intervals. I can't imagine viewing the requested documents (more likely images, if we're being honest here) at a faster pace, anyway. -
Essential Corporate IT Skills
My friends and I have found the following skills essential for survival in the highly unstable world of corporate IT...
- endurance web browsing
- 150+ words-per-minute Instant Messaging
- juggling of various objects/equipment
- Photoshop (for fark.com's "Photoshop this image...")
- advanced buddy iconography design (for somethingleet.com
- Magic the Gathering (be able to play or discuss at length)
- random philosophical/political debate and discussion savvy (you should read enough about a subject to make jokes)
- master the yo-yo
- basic drawing skills (for those white board masterpieces)
- innovative "cube flair" collection and placement abilities (try Feng Shui for the basics, then develop your own "small-space" aesthetic philosophy)
-
Uh-huh
Combine this idea with Google News and we'll really have it made:

Update on Slashdot Censorship.version 1.4.1, (last updated 12th October 2002)
Note to moderators : Do not moderate this post down, if you do then you support the editors stance on censorship and you support the end of free speech and support evil organisations like Microsoft, RIAA, MPAA and laws like the CBTBA and DMCA. Moderating this post will only waste mod points, and will not work!
Slashdot is using censorship! It is trying to eridicate free and open discussion like we know slashdot to be, it has the following RESTRICTIONS in place to Censor you
They claim they don't, but they do, wonder why their are so many trolls, crapflooders and lamers on slashdot, because they are fighting for their rights! Slashdot is trying to silence the trolls. Remove the filters, the trolls get bored, and slashdot will be troll free!
- Lameness filters (It blocks a lot of legitmate posts)
- Unnessary posting delays. Hasnt taco learned to touch type? A lot of posts are typed in less than 20 seconds and it is a ANNOYING DELAY! 2 minute ban? Come on, so some are faster then others, big deal, some people have more to say than others
- Broken moderation system, The whole point is to sort the gems from the crap, yet a lot of posts designed to make a LIVELY DISCUSSION are MODERATED as flamebait! Come on, not everyone likes X, but just because some one bashes it dosent mean its Flamebait. Flame bait is more useful for DIRECT INSULTS and not legitmate discussions.
The "troll" moderation reason is fragmented and broken, why? Because they are trying to use an obsolete usenet term on a realtime discussion, "trolls" can cover a huge blanket of ideas.
- Crapfloods, a meaningless flood of random letters or text, which the lameness filter does a crappy job at trying to stop, besides trolls have written tools using the opensource slashcode to generate crapfloods which bypass the filter
- Links to offensive websites, the most common one is known a http://www.goatse.cx, a awful site which shows a bleeding anus being stretched on the front page. Trolls sneak these links in by posting messages that look legitimate, but infact are sneaky redirects to the site. Common examples include rd.yahoo.com, www.linux-kernel.tk, goatsex.cjb.net, and googles "Im feeling lucky".
- Trying to break slashdot, this is actually a good thing, as it helps test slashdot for bugs. Famous examples include the goatse.cx javascript pop-up, the pagewidening post and the browser crashing post!
Subnet banning, this bans a user unless they email jamie macarthy with their mp5ed ipids. This is unfair, and banning a subnet BLOCKS A WHOLE ISP SOMETIMES, and not that individual user! This can cause chaos! But real trolls use annoymous proxys to get around this so THIS JUST BANS LEGITMATE USERS! Also, they are trying to censor some anoymous proxies, by claiming you cannot post to this page. so this yet more DISCRIMINATION! If you try and post before the ban is over it gets extended.
Pink page of Death, This censors people who use legitmate proxys or firewalls. It also blocks serivces like CgiProxy and filters like t'inator and babelfish.
The Bitchslap! An unethical punishment which is applied to moderators who fight censorship against this site!
Form Keys, These are pointless, why do they even exist?
Unlimited Mod Points for editors, which allows them to dictate what is said on slashdot by moderating down all who disagree.
Zoo blacklisting, a new form of censorship being tested by editors.
Blocking Out text browser users. With its new verification system, text browser users can't sign up for an account. This is bad for acessabillty. They Should At least put the verification code in the alt text
But, the issue that concerens us the most, is the COMMENT QUOTA. A discrimatory system that stiffles discussion, cripples the community and will ultimateley destroy slashdot unless it is removed! Annoymous cowards are allowed only 10 posts a day! This is unethical! Users with negative karma only get two! That is DISCRIMINATION! How would you like to only be able to speak once a day, just because of the color of your skin. That would be racism, and slashdot is discrimitating on people just because of a negative number in a database! BOYCOTT SLASHDOT! LET THEM DIE!
We wan't these stupid useless restrictions REMOVED! This comment will be posted again and again until it does!
Inportant imformation for users
Boycott slashdot, they are pissing over their community, they are becoming like the RIAA and MICROSOFT! Do NOT TOLERATE THIS SHIT! Here are some real news for nerds sites. We don't need slashdot it is nothing but crap!

Close call!I thought they were going declare this site illegal! We Americans wouldn't stand for that!
You can screw up our votes, censor us, lie to us, and treat us like criminals, but you can't take away our liberty to be apathetic lazy morons. What is with all this rabble rousing these days, anyway? Isn't it easier to just shut up and go along with whatever the government says? That's the American way... [disengage bitter cynicism]
This is only going to make UCSD look terrible. Whatever happened to empowering young people to think critically?

Classifieds.
Try online classified advertising. A great example for this is Fark. You pay a small fee, and get a space of text on the front page that links where you want it to. If it goes nowhere you didn't spend much, and if it worked well you have found a space for banner ads. Penny Arcade also does really nice, big ads cheap. If you have a DSL/Cable connection at home or work, run a P2P node carrying mp3s from your band and other indy bands, and instead of carrying the mp3s on your limited web site's bandwidth, tell users to just search for you.

Re:There will be no change
stricter copyright laws help the media corps sell more product, and GWB is in favor of anything that helps US corps sell more stuff
Every policy endorsed by GWB is about helping corporate america. The last thing he cares about is americans, or the citizens of the world.
Here's a nice little tid-bit about GWB, he's spent 42% of his term on vacation, while americans are losing jobs, and the recession shows no signs of abating. -

One thing you DON'T do is screw around with military computer systems and then publicize it.
These guys oughta get the death penalty for criminal stupidity accompanied by a posthumous (is there any other kind?) Darwin award ... -
I really wish...
I really wish that article submitters would not put ambiguous links in the
article.
Seriously, though, would it be too much effort to say "three Kahn titles: Title 1, Title 2, and Title 3"? As it is, it's annoying because you have no idea where each of the three links points. Come on, editors, you can do better than this. -
Not The Register, Fark.Slashdot has become the comment board for Fark, not The Register.
Speaking of which, did anyone else really like the S/N ratio and volume of stories during that Slashdot Blackout thing? More stories, fewer coments would be fine by me. (Assuming I have any say at all, which I don't. I'm not actually paying for Slashdot or anything. My subsidy is purely limited to clicking banner ads and buying the occasional item from Thinkgeek.)

Re:Wow! That makes two!
You might check the classified section of Fark.com. Although it has its share of standard, flashy web ads, it has a classified section which shows text links along the right column of the page.
Though it's not necessarily all about porn, a good deal of the classified listings are "boobies" related. Further, such ads make the site much more money as the pricing structure is $25 for normal ads and $100 for 'Not Safe For Work' ads.
I'm sure it wasn't a magic bullet for them, however. They had the classified section in long before they started throwing in the annoying flashing ads. In fact, I think you can still go through their farkives and see the site design regress to earlier versions as you do so. Or there's always the Internet Archive

Dallas Meetup
We had ten people RSVP and five of us showed up, so it seems our 50% is not as bad as we thought. Our venue changed an hour before the meetup to some bowling lane, and we ditched that pretty quick. It was mostly a good discussion of the awaited Perl 6, multiCase or under_score, and the introduction of Fark which, I might add, is friggin hilarious. We are in the process of looking for beer sponsors -- Sam Adams, do you hear us?

Not big news?
Well after the second try at it, still didn't make the front page. Silly me, I thought this was interesting. Anyway since there also seems to be a lack of discussion on this topic I thought I would point out that fark also covered the story, and people actually commented on it there if you are curious what they had to say on it. It took a while to read through the 300 or so comments but there were some very good points brought up on it. The arguments there also seemed to be largely dominated by the Evolutionists. The creationists seem to be bringing less and less to the table these days.

Worlds Worst Troll
Come on, is that the best you can do? Why not go to troll friendly sites like this?
They are a lot dumb gullible morons there, and I think their IQ level is at most 1. There are always flamewars going on, and it is so easy to start one. You don't have the stupid [here is the address] when you post a link. Their html seems to be worse then /., if you don't close a tag the whole thread gets messed up. Best of all you can post images, and the moderators are hardly ever around!
Only downside it you have to wait 24 hours before you can post, but just create several accounts and you are set. Oh year, the have a lame filter so First Post turns into Boobies but there are ways around it. There are other words that get censored, but you can get around that makes the filter pointless. -
