Re:I know what it means!
That one really deserved top score. To evolve on this further: The replica of Poussin's painting "Les Bergers d'Arcadie" is *mirrored* on the monument and provides the first key to the slightly twisted nature of this enigma. As well as to what letters are twisted, and where:
-The "angel" in the image looks towards the END of the letters when mirrored.
-The three shepherds indicate the number of characters in question. So we can concentrate on the three last letters. The shephers arms reveal the rest:
When mirrored, the first shepherds arm forms the letter L.
The second shephers arm form the letter V
The third shepherds *arms* (both) together, shape the letter W.
Now: Pointy hands / arms are easily transfigured to the pointing handles of a watch. And hints that we should twist something clockwise.
Yet an indication that we're dealing with "a timepiece" is how the letters are organized:
The lower location of the "D" and "M" shape a dial, the letters are placed on the top of a circle.
So what the picture says is approximately "Turn the letters clockwise. Switch L for V. Then turn again, the last one too, and you get a "W".
It really spells the issue out so loud and clear it's hard to ignore..
So - Apply this to the three last letters on the "Shepherd's monument", and what looked like a latin enigma change nature and suddenly read as three simple english words.
And still.. it is indeed a reference to the location of the holy grail - the legends clue was right there: In a tongue in cheek manner it refers to the ONLY holy grail known to man. One which when applied right is indeed powerful enough to give eternal life - passed on from generation to generation.
So again: The carving's humorous message to future readers is simply:
D.O. U.O. S.V.A.L.L.W.

EXCLUSIVE - HiDDEN iNFORNATION ON BIN LADEN
Ossama bin Laden is not dead as many people may think. He recently bought a new discreet airplane, launched a new restaurant chain in Nadjaf, and got married with a Pashtoun. The honey moon was in the moslim tradition, and with respect toward the shariah. Latest release was a photo of his hidden past of rocker in Yemen. Find out why Bush has so much hate toward Ossama

Re:Back me up on "backing up"
FTL Games is dead, but the Classic Amiga Preservation Society is working to preserve old Atari ST and Amiga games.
However, I haven't had my ST out of the box since I moved to California. Now I play the PC version of Dungeon Master which you can get from dmweb.free.fr, and is playable in VMware (albiet without sound). You can also get Chaos Strikes Back for Windows or Linux, thanks to some very dedicated fans. These versions don't have copy protection, so you can enjoy them as long as old PC's are emulated and you remember to keep your hard drive backed up regularly!

Emulation?Would something like Linux + WINE (I know, WINE is not an emulator) be practical for you, if you are just running a email client?
You can go all the way to using Linux + Win98 running on VMWare.
Not sure if qemu is stable enough, but if it is good enough to boot WinXP...

qemu
I find qemu to be quite excellent x86 virtualization software. It's closer to VMware than Bochs, using dynamic translation.

HDRI
It's about time high dynamic-resolution imaging was supported in hardware. It's not only simple to use, but makes many many things easier--no more worrying about hitting the 8-bit limit, picking colors to avoid saturation/overlighting, or struggling with realistic compositing. For compositing alone it's priceless. Debevec even has a light stage for compositing real-life objects into computer-generated scenes (instead of vice versa).
I've been working for a while now on HDRI solutions for things like POV-Ray--even if it is a pseudo-solution. (Or you can get the ml-POV patch for more native HDRI support.) -
Re:9 Architectures, 9 BinariesYeah, that makes sense. I guess it depends how far you want to roll back the source idea--you could include the source code to the kernel, the libraries, the shell, make, etc., and compile those with a monolithic compiler to get bootstrapped. You know, use a compiler that's something smaller, more like tcc rather than gcc. (I know tcc is only x86, but just as an example.)
Or perhaps all of those tools could be included as binaries, but not platform-specific. Rather, they could all be compiled to a simple virtual machine, and the bootstrap code just be a virtual machine emulator? Then the first thing it would do after booting its virtual machine would be compile native versions of all of those things, and use them from that point forward. That'd be kind of cool.

Congrats, Apple
Congratulations iTunes! May the fireworks hail more good times, and less powerbooks that have batteries that explode on their users.

Maybe it's time to replace my aging Casio fx-7000G that I bought new for College Algebra and Trig (pre-precalc) back in '88 or so. Nah, this machine still kicks butt.

Re:Good idea but...
Grip pretty much sucks in terms of speed. I dunno why since it's just a GUI wrapper over standard CLI tools, but it does.
Try something better. The combination of cdparanoia and lame is the classic. From cdparanoia you get good speed, error correction, digital ripping, and from lame you get quality encoding.
If you want a graphical ripper, I've discovered a little gem called oggre (not to be mistaken for the other OGGre which is an OGG reader written in Java.
The oggre I'm talking about is an XMMS output plugin which writes OGG to files:
- Set your CD Audio input plugin to digital mode (analog won't work with oggre).
- Load the playlist with tracks from the CD.
- Select all tracks and use "get advanced info" (or whatever it's called) to load info from CDDB.
- Set oggre as the output plugin, with quality 4.99 (recommended best quality/size ratio, read the oggre README to see why).
- Make sure the play mode is not random or loop.
- Press play, sit back and watch ripping work at a very nice speed.
About the only thing wrong with oggre is the fact that it uses a fixed output dir, so if you want dirs named after the CD you have to make them by hand. The files, however, do use song attributes in their names.
Oh, and the guy who wrote oggre also wrote out_lame, but that one has fewer features. I don't mind choosing OGG over MP3 so I don't care.

Tai Chi - thats what I began to do ...
... and it helps (though it perhaps diminishes the degree of call it "slashbotness" for short one is in).
It is just important IMHO that you do not emphasize on 'The Form' but more on "body awareness" (following Patrick Kelly perhaps).

Re:DOSEmu for Linux
DOSEmu is a LOT faster than DOSBox, but it really sucks att emulating soundcards.. You won't get sound in many games in DOSEmu..
My biggest hope for the future is QEmu! Its emulation is so fast it's silly and it has support for many different CPUs and eventually it'll even be able to run MacOS X on a PC. :) -
Re:cool
Actually the workstation that controls the scanner runs linux.
You can see an overview here of the machine.
If you look at the press releases they came out with an add-on that allows the machine to scan at 10k lines in 12 seconds.
As an aside, the smaller film scanners that capture 35mm slides have Digital Ice to remove surface blemishes. Part of it works by shining an infrared light through the film. The infrared light is unaffected by the different shades of color, but the dust "stops" it and therefore is detected. Quite ingenious.
I imagine as expensive as this machine is, it uses this and other techniques to remove surface and film imperfections. If you use an original to scan that has been well cared for, the results should be impressive.
I toyed around with the idea of homebrewing such a machine to convert some old family super8 movies.
The two problems that you are going to have is the film transport, and the amount of time it takes to scan the film. As it stands, it would be time intensive to build such a machine and technically challenging. That and not having a workspace, it will have to wait for another day.

Re:Free?
There is an up-and-coming x86 (and PowerPC and ARM) emulator named QEMU that is over 60 times faster than Bochs (resulting in being ~4x slower than native code). It'll be a while before running Windows on QEMU is reliable, but it can be installed and booted on the virtual machine right now.

Re:XBlast
I second this, and it is actually still being maintained, with a new version out last Jan. Download here (win and solaris binaries at the bottom) or get more info at the xblast center. Details can be found at the very bottom of the news page about a couple new versions being worked on (status?) with Internet play, graphics, and bots .

Try QEMUQEMU is what you want instead of plex86. It works on linux and CVS kinda works on windows.
QEMU can't run windows very well yet, but it runs Linux, ReactOS and handful of others already.

Re:Ironic the Intego released a solution fast enou
The Intego Virus Barrier software just flags as "infected" any CFM executable whose name ends in a common file extension... which is why it STUPIDLY flagged as viruses the BMP, PCX and PNG plugins for Photoshop Elements. Which means it does not even check for a dot and something else before the file extension.

Lame MP3 Writer plugin for Winamp is what you're looking for, it seems. It uses the Lame dll (lame_enc.dll) to encode anything you play through Winamp to MP3.

Adding constellation overlays
I had downloaded Stellarium over a year ago when my young son was first starting to be interested in stars. Haven't used it much, but kept it installed on the computer. That was why I remembered it to do the parent post.
I started poking around the sourceforge forum, and not only is my version out of date, but they are actively working on a project to add constellation overlays into the display. Check out Ursa Major and a toucan constellation I'm not familiar with.
Cool stuff. -

Re:Yeah, rightSame FAQ:
I want to use my MIDI keyboard for entry
Try the following:
- Hans Lub's emacs/MIDI input mode
- Nicholas Sceaux' Emacs/MIDI input mode
- RUMOR a command line monophonic MIDI/lilypond entry tool.
- LilyComp a graphic entry tool, for those that don't read music well.
I don't want to learn another syntax. Now what?
There are other options: it is possible to create the music in another format. Supported formats include
- MIDI: LilyPond includes midi2ly, a program that translates a MIDI file to LilyPond.
- ETF: LilyPond includes etf2ly, a convertor for the Finale ETF format (about ETF)
- ABC: LilyPond includes abc2ly, a convertor for the popular ABC format (about ABC)
- MusicXML. Guido Amoruso's xml2ly will convert MusicXML to LilyPond. (About MusicXML.).

Re:Off the top of my head..
Oops, missed a couple of good ones: Polygon Worlds lets you drive around on Mars. Planet's Orbits and Partiview are great for general Astronomy education.
...and some more general linkage, because I'm bored:
Educational -
Tuxtype and Droid Battles.
Board/puzzle games -
MahJong (the real four player thing, not the solitaire version), Settlers of Catan - versions here or here, JTEG, a Risk-alike, and Tetrinet (networked T*tris).
General Fun -
Armagetron (definitely have a look at this - I can imagine it being popular with kids), Search and Rescue, Astrobattle, Tower Toppler, MyLink (UpLink clone), Airstrike, XRick, Vegastrike, Stoned (curling simulation), CarWorld, Cannon Smash (virtual Table tennis), Sentry, Noiz2sa, rRootage, PowerManga, Spheres of Chaos, Warblade, Epiar...
More possibilities.
You might also give Nethack or one of its many derivatives a shot.
That enough to keep you busy? (= -
Check out Orbiter
This program is an excelent, free space simulator. Fly the Apollo 11 mission, launch the space shuttle and dock at ISS, or for real fun, launch a probe from earth, have it gravity assist around venus, and go out to the outer planets. The physics seems very realistic and real world. Math will for sure be a huge help in this. The main site is Here, and also check out Dan's ORbiter page, with many great addons and sound updates here. For a great video of orbiter in action (But without any view of the controls or the mathmatics involved) check out video 3 from this page.
Did I mention its all free as in beer? -
Use less power
If you use and unload kernel modules, wireless NIC, sound card, hotplug, usb etc etc... your laptop should consume a bit less power, also look to see if your laptop supports processor frequency scaleing

Re:Microsoft=GES (Good Enough Software)
[Windows 95] did one thing that the Mac OS hadn't (and still doesn't, being icon-centric in navigation of apps)--allow a quick way to launch an application.
Ummm, ever hear of a little thing called the Apple menu?
And if the Start menu is so great for launching apps, how come there are still a million or so commonly-used apps that throw a shortcut on the desktop when you install them? Is it because over time the Start menu gets wildly out of control and it's too much of a hassle to navigate through all the accumulated shit to find the one item you want to launch? I think so. -
