Re:PHP is *the* industry standard
HTML was designed to be stateless
HTML was designed as a markup language. JSPs and PHP do not solve these problems. You mean "HTTP". And cookies provide some level of statefulness.
As for Curl, let me quote Tim Berners-Lee back at himself:
Anyone who slaps a 'this page is best viewed with Browser X' label on a Web page appears to be yearning for the bad old days, before the Web, when you had very little chance of reading a document written on another computer, another word processor, or another network
Besides, Curl are dying and taking their technology with them. -
Wait a minute... A dot com?!
Come on... PayPal isn't corrupt! Theres no such thing as a corrupt dot com company. They're all fine, upstanding companies with untarnished reputations.
Take your PayPal troll somewhere else, buddy! -
Re:Then he's failed already...
Dude, I don't think you got the point of what I was linking to.
Just because you have a multi-million dollar salary and run a company doesn't make you intelligent, or useful. Infact, when a company fails as craptacularly as Enron, its usually the idiot CEOs who are at fault.
Not to mention in the majority of those cases, the company fell apart because of what?
Lack of communication. Yup, when you're a CEO and decide to stay locked up in your little corner of the world and only pay attention to people at the same level as you, I can assure you that your business is on the path to failure.
Perhaps if those CEOs spent some time reading slashdot, they would have found out about fuckedcompany.com before they were on it.
>I doubt they give the slightest bit of a crap what software their company uses as long as the employees are satisfied and it gets the job done within the specs.
That isn't how being a CEO works at all. Anyone who's in an Executive position is always in CYA mode. Most CEOs don't give a shit about their employees until one of them makes him look like the fool. And caring about satisfying employees? Unions existed for a reason (now they're more of an anacronism than they should be).
Same thing goes for the products and software. It's all CYA, and CEOs would run linux today if they thought they could wipe their arse with it the moment it fails. It's just that Microsoft is used to being everyone's toilet paper, and so they don't feel threatened when a CEO says "It's isn't my fault the IT department left you guys in research without email all week. They told me it was Microsoft's fault because of some Exchange error or something.". Microsoft knows as long as they make a good punching bag, they'll stay in business. -

Re:Thisis 100% PURE rumorOne more quick thought...
If you really want rumor, you can always check out RumorTracker; it covers all of the Mac rumor sites. Though the rumor sites are almost never 100% accurate, they do tend to have some good commentary, and they're a lot less rah-rah about Apple, and more balanced in coverage overall than they used to be.
Now, where are the sites to go for Gateway rumors?
Oh, sorry, I forgot!

At least according to this recent F'd Company post.

This could be good
Though it will never be another Source Forge, VA Linux loses a lot more money than they make, and the harsh reality is that it may be a matter of time before it gets 100 "Fuck Points" on Fucked Company and bandwidth-devouring slashdot, freshmeat, and especially sourceforge have to go on their own to survive.
Microsoft has nearly unlimited resources, and developers of various large open source projects may have no choice but to move to Microsoft's site, at least to use their bandwidth, which is still holding up quite well under a heavy slashdotting. -
Re:The secret of ./'s success....
Super Bowl ads are to
.com companies as the cover of Sports Illustrated is to atheletes: kiss of death.
The irony is two sites that quite few people were sure would fail: slashdot and f**kedcompany.com are still chugging ahead (actually doing quite well), while 90% of .com sites have disappeared. -
Re:Statutory damagesThat may be perfectly accurate in terms of the law, but in practice this law doesn't seem to be applied. For example, just take a look at Fuckedcompany, Pud publishes an archive of companies internal memos and when the lawyers send him a "cease and desist" letter, he publishes those as well.
http://www.fuckedcompany.com/An then, there is The Smoking Gun. While they don't seem to publish random letters, they do publish embarassing letter or documents that have been sent to a governmental agency. So, perhaps he could publish the document recording the complaint the guy sent to the FBI. That would be even better.

Re:LOL
Just love getting the skinny on failed companies. Wish people from other companies would come out and do the same.
If you're really that interested, check out http://fuckedcompany.com/. You have to wade through a lot of garbage (they don't have the notion of Karma with their blogs (I hate that term)), but you get an almost-as-it-happens look at recently failing companies.
It's one of those sites which are propbably more entertaining to those who watch the nightly news for the explosions rather than the weather.... -
Re:LOL
Then go to F*d company - plenty of skinny.

Bee Dance
They do their bee dance of course. Bees have a very intricate dance that shows other bees where pollen is, I think scientists had learned how to interpret this dance, if the bees returned and did their dance, humans could go and detonate the mine, or the bees could collectivly sting it repeatedly.
A rare video clip of a person trying to imitate the bee dance can be seen here. Although he's a bit heavier than a bee and the dance isn't very intricate, if you saw this happening, it would sure get your attention!

Re:Arrgrgrgrgrghhhh! ( stomp monkeyboy, stomp )Steve and company and stomp all they want but it isn't going to help. They can't preload, they can't make their products secure( ok in 10 years MAYBE ), and they can't give their OS away( they could but it would kill about 40% of their revenue ).
So go ahead and stomp MonkeyBoy, it's going to be as fun to watch as your MonkeyBoy Dance(see link below).
Microsoft is a company in a dire search for an air supply. Like a fish out of water flopping around. It's obvious from the fact that they said the "L" word in public yet again.

All I have to say
is Balmer is a crack monkey. For evidence see here

With Ballmer against us we can't loose.Old monkey-man is the best hope OS/Linux/Freedom has, frankly. Imagine if they fired him and got in someone with a brain.
I remember seeing a chimp with Down's Syndrome: it walked fully upright like a human. This is one of the spookiest things I've ever seen, but Ballmer running around and shreking like a chimp comes a close second.

Re:Then have your soda OPEN SOURCE!Yeah, then go check out the link to the recipe...
Thank you for your interest in Opencola.
The Opencola soft drink formula was a time-limited marketing promotion that ran publicly until 2001 in support of the company's introductory open source product offering. Opencola has since changed its strategic direction and is now focusing its core business on developing a proprietary distributed content search application.

Fucked Company doesn't really care one way or the other, it's just another reason to post pictures of Pud on Ginger and develop their trolling skills.
In other words, does anyone really think any media source has *the* inside scoop on Segway production? -

Business plan? What business plan?
My company is considering the purchase of a small surface-mount assembly line so we can do our manufacturing in-house, and the issue of static control has come up. We've all been told to take ESD precautions when handling electronics, but how much precaution is enough? [...] I've handled tons of electronics over the years and have never been able to attribute a single failure to ESD damage.
I look forward to seeing your place listed on Fucked Company. We should start thinking up good taglines for Pud now. Tip: Get a clue, not a slashdot account. -

Surprise? Public Emails Are Spamtraps
Well, duuuh. What do people actually think that Hotmail, Mail, Excite, Go or other accounts are for? If you get on the Internet, you go through an ISP, which provides an email account, sometimes up to 5. That's where you get your real mail. For public exposure (signing on to news sites, etc.) email, get a Hotmail account, and just let it fill up with junk. I see it as getting a benefit from the Microsoft tax.
Here's my strategy. My ISP: 1 email account; personal use (friends and associates). Mail(.com): identifying myself in public commentary ... forums like Slashdot, Kuro5hin, and Fsckedcompany; sending rebuttals to online news journalists; and mailing webmasters/programmers about their sites/programs. Hotmail: more spam-prone exposures, like logins to pr0n sites, yowza. Go and Excite: miscellaneous uses that I haven't thought of yet.
Thus, my ISP email is utterly clean of spam. My Mail(.com) account gets a couple pieces of spam a week, with some replies from journalists, webmasters and programmers; I logon to Mail(.com) once a week to delete some spam and find some replies. My Hotmail account is a windswept and dusty wasteland of spam, getting 2-6 pieces of spam a day, and has some notices from the sites I subscribe to; I logon to Hotmail every 1 to 4 weeks to delete essentially everything, which is dozens of spam mails. The Go and Excite accounts are still being evaluated for their usefulness; I just login once a month to keep 'em active.
So, thank you Microsoft for providing me a spam filter. Go ahead and even sell the list of your Hotmail clients ... you will just be using your own bandwidth to fill up your own hard disks. Suckers. -
ex-PwC employee email

Re:When does Slashdot follow?
Nothin' new here...Pud at F---edcompany.com will tell ya time and time again:
givin' stuff away for free (this means Linux, sites, etc) don't pay like it used to...

Rumor has it Microsoft will buy Yahoo
Of course, Fucked Company does have a "story" about Microsoft's plans to buy Yahoo. Why isn't that also on the Slashdot front page? -
F***edCompany had this first....umm so it's not exactly hot-off-the-press is it? This was first raised two weeks ago, but hell it's a good enough story to read again
;)Check out the Super Happy Fun Slander Corner for a more ummm colorful discussion of this stupidity.. it's always a laugh to see failing dotcoms engaged in a death struggle

MCI and UUnetWe have two T3 on the UUnet side, and 98 T1/frac T1's through mci worldcom (same company, different bills.) I've been told by our tech and sales folks that they don't expect to be laid off, and that our 3-year service contracts will be honored. My fingers are crossed.
Some leaked memos on fuckedcompany.com hold that up. If the US government will bail out Amtrak, they will definitely bail out WorldCom. To do anything else would be devastating to the infrastructure and economy of the country.

Why not set up a Microsoft Certified (monkey boy) Dance outside their booth. If someone questions your behavior you can just tell them you are a fan of Steve Ballmer and paying a tribute.

Re:Here's where it gets funny.Actually, a dot-bomb company tried to do something similar to this. PrintCafe attempted to subpoena Pud from Fucked Company to obtain the identities of "Ex-DLJ, sucky-me, and idiot!", whom they were going to sue for posting defamatory comments on the anonymous Fucked Company message boards.
You can see the whole saga here, including all the crap Pud received from PrintCafe's lawyers. It even says "PrintCafe Inc. v. Ex-DLJ, sucky-me, and idiot!" on the documents. Funny shit.

Re:Why government certified? Why do we jump to have the government certify our electronic devices, standards, and protocols? Why can't we merely rely on the private sector to develop sound products? Why don't we fight for LESS government and LESS government intervention? How much control over your daily lives do you want the government to have?
Many Slashdot readers are "liberal" or "left-leaning" and are opposed to the War on Drugs and drug laws in general. If you don't like the government telling you what you can and cannot put in your body, why are you so eager to have the government tell you what it thinks the best and worst products are? Let the private sector handle this.
An excellent point, my "conservative" or "right-leaning" friend!
I, for one, trust the private sector to make important standards decisions in a just and unbiased manner. I know that can count on private enterprise to interact with the public an an open and honest fashion, and think that your average board of directors has a much better handle on what's going on with their company than some hare-brained committee of bureaucrats has over some bloated, complex government scheme.
Besides, I don't want such important things left up to some government agency that could disappear from the face of the planet in an instant--no, thank you, I'll take private enterprise any day. They're really looking out for what's best for me.
...perhaps we should look to Europe for examples of how to do things properly... -

Say goodbye to AG for good
I was just over there now... everything comes up nothing but "X" 's now. No matter how bad you mispell the title or the artist.... nothing. nada. zilch. Oh, well.... off to KaZaa and Gnutella. F*cked Companies
This book is written by the guy that created f*ckedcompany.com. I read it while killing time in the DFW airport one day.
Simply put, it was a hilarious account of how stupid some of the .com flameouts were and how miserably they failed. The tone of the book is somewhat unusal, with swear words and a very cynical attitude. When reading it I kept thinking, "if I would ever write a book, it would sound like this". -
What is right with the Palm and Visor?
cos making money certainly isnt a priority
Handspring Posts Loss, Stock Tumbles
Palm 3Q loss narrows
maybe people should choose a company that will be around for a while as its not gonna be long until we see them on here
unless losing is their new winning strategy -
Re:Slashdot: antinews for nerds, nothing else matt
Before reading this, I had no idea who Starband was, what they did, where I might have known them from, etc.
Indeed. This kind of article is more the domain of FuckedCompany, IMHO. -
I think merit should be earned, like anything elseI guess in the end it comes down to this: There are two camps- One that believes that hard work and "gumption" should be what separates the deserving and the undeserving, and another that believes that true knowledge and ability should be the qualification
Subject pretty much says it all. I don't think any wise person would disagree if you were to say that the most heinous intellectual crime is one of unfulfilled potential. Whether fulfilling that potential necessarily means a degree or just living a fruitful life is the sticky bit. I know a lot of people that have the societal measure of success yet haven't stretched themselves mentally in the slightest. I know a lot of people that have the piece (or pieces, in at least one case) of paper, but had to work very hard at it because they aren't that bright. I know some who excelled at rote learning, but failed awfully when asked to integrate two concepts into a novel whole. And I know a lot of very bright, certifiably genius-level people who have decided to do and make stuff instead of spend time learning about other stuff that was done and made. If one is lucky, one gets the choice which road to take.
Sad part is, hard economic times bring out the great equalizer: management knows that individuals who have graduated from a certain institution at a certain level have demonstrably performed to a level which guarantees they themselves cannot be faulted for "taking a chance" on a new hire. It's the way things are always going to be, unless you know people. You either have a degree and hotjobs/monster/dice, or no degree but people who you and know you've done excellent work in the past. Official references don't count, either. I'm talking about people that know you and will hire you because they know what you can do. If you don't fit into neither camp, you stand a hard chance of finding a decent job in today's economy.
And BTW, I was agreeing with your earlier post. I currently work at a university. Before that I worked at a high-dollar startup, before that a Fortune 100 company, and before that a university. I don't have a degree, and that is by choice. I've faced a lot of discrimination because of it. However, I've never had trouble finding a good job at any time in the past 13 years largely because I know people who know me and know what I can do. I know I'm smart, because I'm smart enough to recognize where I fit in what I can do. I'm also smart enough not to care about the ArsDigitia's of the world. I guess I have a self-worth that doesn't depend on other people. Which is probably not healthy....

Losing money = winning?
The article explains some of the myths and realities about game console pricing, how the current price war is playing out, why Sony is winning, and why Microsoft is losing.
It's a strange world where loosing money faster than your competitors is decribed as "winning". Seems to me that, not too long ago, that's how many .coms "won" too.
(Not that I expect to see Sony or Microsoft appearing on the pages of www.fuckedcompany.com any time soon - they both have very deep pockets - but it's an interesting parallel. And yes, I know it's all about market share and the razors/razor blades business model...) -
F*ed
I guess it's time to head on over to Pud's to see if he's got the X-Box listed...
-
Yup, they're fucked.
In other news, no one gives a flying fuck about some stupid
.not company. When did slashdot turn into Fucked Company? -
Better ExamplesRedHat is a poor example because they're a late comer to the embedded world and only seemed to jump into it half way. Lynuxworks, maker of Bluecat Linux, recently laid off 30% according to FuckedCompany.com. Lineo is basically done. How is MontaVista doing these days? These are companies that are staking their whole business on embedding Linux.
However, just so people don't think it's just a Linux thing... Annasoft, a leading Microsoft embedded partner, just died.

Bad Idea, but positive consequencesThis strategy is clearly doomed. First, we have the fact that Gateway has NO knowledge of the entertainment industry or media distribution, and arguably little knowledge about making decent hardware.
Second, we have FuckedCompany. With all the casualties in the online music space, Gateway better have one hell of a secret weapon. Great customer service and brick-and-mortar stores full of low-tech heads-of-households looking to invest in a computer will not help them sell records.
Gateway is a crumbling company. A look at recent news shows that they are clearly in a state of panic. Last I remember reading was that they were closing European operations and trying to get into IT consulting. I repeat: state of panic.
In the wisest of possible strategies, this music ploy is just a publicity stunt to earn credibility with "all those crazy kids." In their more probable strategy, it is simply bad management making a poor investment outside of their core competencies.
On a positive note, any money they throw at this project will be applied to a full frontal attack of the entertainment media establishment (xxAA's), which in a moral sense may be an ideal use of funds. In an economic sense, it is a waste of precious resources.

Re:Finally.I don't think so. A full version of Windows 2000 costs $300. They are charging you $150 to install an operating system. Shit, they charge you $250 for Debian, something they didn't even pay for. What a scam. Especially considering OEM computer makers use images and can image a new computer in like 10 minutes. I don't know how they can justify any of their prices.
Let's see... They charge $2000 for 266Mhz computer (I don't care how small it is), $250/$450 for the OS, and other assorted unreasonable prices for the other accessories, and their web site sucks? Can we say Fucked Company?
