Re:Reviewers are robots.
If IGN or Gamespot or Gamespy or EGM give a review that seems to be an anomaly, ignore it. It's a bought review.
You can be sure that at Gamers.com there are no bought reviews. In fact, in certain situations we've even received hate email by developers and publishers for not praising their game. We report what we consider to be fair and just, despite all the buzz.
Of course, not everyone should trust a single reviewer's opinion over a particular title. That's why we have a special section (Newest Games) in our forums to let new games fall under even more scrutiny by our members.
Between reading a review and following up on other gamers opinions, one should have a rough idea if the game is worth purchasing. -

Re:It's one way...
Your ideas are sound in that they block most automated spam attacks, but that doesn't stop everyone.
I run Gamers.com Forums and the only way a member can post is if they actually sign up with an email verification system.
Yet, I still have lots of spammers going thru this entire process just to spam a board or two. I could use a bayesian filter to verify comments before being posted, but the only surefire way I've found to stay on top of it is with quality board moderators who identify and eliminate spam quickly. -

hmm, no idea why my original post was moderated as 'overrated'.
I'm a DS fan, but have been unable to find a website that has more information regarding DS than Gamers.com.
I posted it here thinking that others could benefit from the research I've already done. -

Re:downhill, for x-box anyway
The reason why console games are so vigourously play tested is because once you make a playable disc or cartridge on a system, there's no such thing as a do over.
Every time there is some discussion that involves the possible patching of games, someone hauls out this old cliche that console games are more properly playtested than PC games. It's not true.
What's true is that consoles are easier to test for than PCs because PCs involve countless configurations of hardware and software whereas every Xbox/PS2/GameCube is pretty much the same. This makes testing easier and it makes finding bugs easier on a console.
Despite this fact, there are quite a few console games with terrible bugs. Driv3r shipped with terrible pop in and strange flickering graphics; At least three games no longer work if you are using the new big memory card on your GameCube; Tomb Raider, Angel of Darkness was full of problems; So was Enter the Matrix; Knight of the Old Republic had a bunch of known issues; Thief: Deadly Shadows has abrutal AI bug; even SSX Tricky locks up my GameCube from time to time.
Console games are full of bugs, we're just used to playing around them or ignoring them. PC games have more bugs because it's harder to find them and because a lot of them involve the arcane interactions of strange hardware configurations. Properly finding PC bugs requires more time and resources, both of which most publishers aren't willing to give, especially when consoles are a bigger part of the market.
Repeat after me: it's not laziness, it's complexity. -
Re:While this is exciting news...
Microsoft did try to purchase Nintendo. They said no, and now we're afflicted with the Xbox.

Re:c64 games
Litle Computer People was the first sim I ever played even before Simcity and Maxim's other ilk. The sounds from them as they became happy and sad used to haunt me, heh. I wish there was a proper way to kill them though as they bothered the hell out of me sometimes with their 'needs', bah! If I wanted needs I would get a girlfriend, wait I'm a slashdotter strike that, more likely I will grow a third arm from over consumption of stimulants and oh yeah baby! Cue: DISCO MUSIC

... Now Rolemaster from ICE thats a real system for real RPers and is much deserving of being ported. Then we would have real RPGs instead of this let me lead you down a story junk that comes from most other CRPGs. And yes I am a fan of Bethesda's TES series -
Ah, FF7
Do you hear that? Its the sound of Squaresoft cashing in on one of their most profitable games ever.
Not that I don't blame them. I'm titilated at the prospect of entirely new content for that particular game's story, I wish instead that they'd gone ahead with the rumored PS2 remakes that where cancelled. At least I wish that had remade 7. With a better story.
Or something. -
useless forums
The thing that really drove it home for me how bad forums are is this set of reviews for Rockstar's Manhunt title - not released until this Thursday.
This site lets users review games before they're even out. As a result, there's a bizarre mix of "10/10 it will r00l", "1/10 this game is sick", along with 10/10s from people who never bothered to change the default rating (and are just asking where to get a demo), and oddest of all, people who rate it from 5-9 based on their understanding of screenshots and rumours.
Worst. Review. Ever.
And I'd just like to take this opportunity to rate Half-Life 3 a 7.5 out of 10 - I expect solid gameplay and stunning graphics, and some nice twists, but to be ultimately left wanting more. Can't wait for its release in, er, 2006.

VPU Recovery
#2 seems to be on M$FT's mind as well.
If the graphics processor hangs (in the middle of a game for example), VPU Recover acts by resetting the VPU, enabling the end user to continue right where he left off. Depending on the state of the system when VPU Recover was activated, you may be able to recover with all of your open applications intact. In other cases, these applications may have to be closed and you're kicked back to the Windows desktop, but at least you don't have to go through the slow process of a complete system reboot.
According to ATI, this feature is a requirement in Microsoft's next-generation Windows operating system, codenamed "Longhorn". So essentially, ATI is ahead of the curve, to the advantage of anyone who owns an ATI-based video card.
Source
I couldn't find a neutral (not associated with the new ATI drivers) reference to this requirement. Wonder if this feature with manifest itself in ATI's promised regular updates to their Linux driver. -
Best Keyboard ever
I have one of these at home and one at work. I've used dozens of different keyboards, and this is the best I've ever found. I picked it after extensive research and reading of reviews.

Kiss future EpicGames Linux titles goodbye.
Remember EpicGames? The folks who developed UT and UT2003. Well, you can now be sure we won't be seeing any more Linux titles from them. According to this article, EpicGames and Microsoft have just signed a multi-game publishing deal which would make the games PC/XBOX-exclusive and I really doubt MSFT would permit any kind of Linux support.

Re:Give me closed gaming any day
I was trying to get one more run out of Splinter Cell by trying to make it all the way through on the hard skill level without killing anyone, but even though it's much harder I still start feeling claustrophobic with the lack of options. I started playing the PC version of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 last week which, although in a completely different genre, is so completely open that I find myself having a much better time. All the reviews I've seen agree with me and this review compares it favorably to GTA III and covers the replay aspect quite well.

Business plan... no, really!
I perfected this online business plan back in the DOS days, when most games required you to make a stop at the "casino" to earn "money".
LastCash = Cash
Do While Cash < DesiredCash
{
Play_casino_game()
If Cash > LastCash
{
SaveGame()
LastCash = Cash
}
If Cash < FrustrationLevel
{
Reboot/Power off
End
}

Miyamoto & Violence
directly from miyamoto:
I try not to use violence as an easy means of expression. It's easier to make people cry than laugh. It's easier to use violence than to describe particular emotions. And it's easier to use blood than to express a certain kind of terror in other ways. It's OK to use violence with quality and for a purpose, but I want to avoid using violence as an easy means just to seek stimulus. We don't have to use it if we have other creative means of expression.
also:
People often talk about GTA. But I'm not sure whether that sort of extreme subject matter is always appropriate . . . I'm not convinced that being more realistic makes better games . . . we have to do something that movies cannot do.
I think you're right, Daetrin. It would be nice to see Nintendo's philosophy overextend Sony's. I doubt that's going to happen on the home console market though. Nonetheless, with the GBA selling as well as it is perhaps that's where Nintendo's philosophy will find a new home. Miyamoto's more interested in creating games inspired by the design of Amelie while US companies like Rockstar are trodding forward with prison brutality and hardcore violent pornography as inspiration. A crossroads indeed. -
Re:No Marketing Needed..
Too right on State of Emergency, but the Italian Job you mention was published by Eidos, not Rockstar. Rockstar's Italian Job (for PS1 published a year or so ago), was widely lauded as one of the best PS1 games ever.

Re:must be a PC thing
But even that isn't so simple anymore. Consider the nForce2 Audio Processing Unit. The tests I've seen indicate that it is the least CPU consuming audio solution available. You can even use 6 channel digital output in games with it. If I understood correctly it combines the channels in game in to one dolby digital stream.

Re:Benchmarking Across Platforms
It's funny. Apple claims to get 275fps on a
P4 system, yet on this test, firingsquad get almost 370 also using a Radeon 9800 Pro.
I have no doubt however that you can get a "mediocre" result like 275 on a P4 3GHz if you configure it improperly. -

Re:Some physics glitches...
Just a quick comment -- I think they've done an amazing job with the physics overall. I'm not sure where you're coming from with the oversteer complaint, either; depending on the drivetrain and the myriad of other tuning parameters, one has to be extremely careful with the throttle to hold the line and avoid spinouts. Use of the throttle and brakes through corners can be quite helpful (or can kill you). I also assume you're not making the comment only after trying "Arcade Mode". Anyway, I found the praise lavished by Bob Earl very interesting.
Also, as far as the word "Driving Simulator". I think GT3 has to be the closest goddamn thing out there to a track racing simulator. It's not perfect, but if any game can claim that title, it's the Gran Turismo series. -
Re:WE DONT CARE. Just use games for benchmarks!

Like Quake III?
Like the rest of the online press, we received our RADEON 7500 and 8500 review samples at the beginning of last week. At first, things proceeded smoothly; both boards were running great on our testing platform (in this case, a Pentium 4 since we've already examined the performance of Titanium boards on Athlon). Then we received word of HardOCP's results with a modified Quake 3 executable. It appeared as if the RADEON drivers was looking for Quake and optimizing for performance if it was found. By changing all references from "quake" to "quack" performance of the RADEON 8500 was slower. We were in the middle of testing the validity of the same program with an executable we'd made of our own that performed a similar function. By the time we'd completed testing with all three executables it was obvious that ATI had modified their drivers specifically for Quake 3. Therefore, rather than discussing the features and performance of the RADEON 7500 and 8500, we've decided to devote this entire article to examine exactly what's going on. -
*cough* QUACK 3 ISSUE!
Quake 3 vs Quack 3 Go troll elsewhere. They're both guilty from time to time of doing the same bullshit.

Hey hey, to be fair to nVidia

And it is brown!
HEXUS reckons a 200MHz front side bus can't hurt. here. There's a picture of a brown semiconductor, also known as the "brains of a computer".
TOM'S HARDWARE has a controversial conclusion about the 3200+ and describes it as a "spineless paper tiger". It thinks the 3200+ is "much too aggressive" and it should be an XP2800+.
SUDHIAN Some crazy looking geek at Sudhian (hi Joel), reckons that AMD is being a little coy with clock speeds while its PR speeds have rocketed skywards.
FIRING SQUAD says AMD's odyssey for the performance crown has been a little more treacherous than Her Indoors, but welcomes the introduction of the 3200+ and the 400MHz bus.
TECH REPORT says there's not much new to report about the 2.2GHz chip apart from the fact that it runs on a 400MHz front side bus. But it reckons that the release is timely. There's a picture of a brown semiconductor which appears to resemble the brains of a computer.
LOST CIRCUITS contrasts the real brown brains of a computer with the hypothetical 3200+ brains of a computer it previewed a month or two ago.
BIT-TECH reckons that AMD's finally released the processor that the 3000+ should have been, denies the site's too pro-Intel, and puts it through its paces. There's a picture of a brown chip which appears to be the brains of a computer.

Info on starbreeze
Yup, Starbreeze was formed out of the former demo group Triton, the creators of, among others, the legendary Crystal Dreams and Crystal Dreams II demos.
Back then, Triton captured the essence of module tracking with their FastTracker & FastTrackerII, a very advanced implementation of the old amiga protracker concept. Their Fasttracker was, for many years, the biggest rival of Scream Tracker and Impulse Tracker, and a lot of musicians preferred it's simple but efficient interface above all other trackers.
When Triton became Starbreeze, they had a lot of problems finding publishers for their first game 'Into The Shadows'. Parts of that never-published game were used in 'Sorcery', a 1st person RPG to be published by Gremlin Interactive, but also these plans did not go forward, as Gremlin was bought by Infogrames and they traditionally fucked up one more development studio. Finally, Swing Entertainment (Conspiracy Games) had the courage and the guts to publish the now 3rd person RPG 'Enclave' on 3 platforms, and the game gained reasonably good acclaim. Unfortunately, Swing went bankrupt 3 months later. Starbreeze is now said to be working on Enclave 2.

Recursive literature
Soon, there will be a Quidditch game released by EA.
Later somebody will novelize the game just like another game we know.
This is bound to happen since there is a ton of money in Harry Potter. After all, the Harry Potter author is richer than the Queen!
Still, I will be buying "Order of The Phoenix" as soon as it comes out (June 21st). Anybody else with me?

Um, not really. I remember that Bungie was one of the few companies to release quality Mac games at the same time as their PC versions, but I wouldn't call the company Mac-Only. -

Re:Only 4 rendering pipes not 8 - WrongWrong! You're a good boy for doing your homework, but you didn't quite complete it. Firing Squad links to a site that tells the reason. The GeForce 4 can actually switch its configuration. It can run with 8 rendering pipelines or do the 4/2 thing that it does. nVidia is enforcing this through software because they say that it is faster in today's games. They say that when newer games come out, they'll switch it to have 8 rendering pipelines to perform better in the games that will come out in the comming years.
Looks like we'll have to wait and see.
