Re:Plenty of entertaining stuff..."Welcome back, and how's our jello doing in that liquid nitrogen?"
Now *that* makes me think of one man. A man who made science and physics *very* interesting (and fun) to me.
No, its not Bill Nye, although he is cool.
Nope, not Don Herbert either, although I must say that our beloved Mr Wizard certainly entertained and educated me more than I can really express in words, it was just the other kids that he had on the show that annoyed the hell out of me.
(Then again, I really miss those afternoons after school. Mr Wizard at 4:00, Dangermouse at 4:30, and You Can't do that on Television at 5:00, now that made for a decent afternoon)
Nope, just one person pops into mind.
Julias Sumner Miller
Julius
Sumner
Miller (warning, scary music and horribly made page)
Granted, he looked like a mad scientist, but he made physics cool to me. And he made mistakes, and that was one of the things that made it so fun to watch! Not only did I learn why things work, but he also taught me to *wonder* why things work the way they do, instead of just accepting that they work.
I am so very happy that those shows still air daily here on PBS in the states.
Sure the editing was atrocious, and the film was grainy, and the music just
.. well .. was wierd, but If they would put those old shows on DVD, I would spend that money in a heartbeat, not only for myself to watch and enjoy again, but for my kids.Heck, the messes that they would make in the kitchen couldn't possibly be as bad as the ones I made right?
THAT was the kind of show that, in some bizzare "train wreck" way, I just could not stop watching. Hell, I still watch them if I happen to channel surf past them in the afternoon.
Although, if I let my kids watch Mr Wizard also, I am going to have to watch it before they do, just to make sure I edit out that one episode where he teaches you how to make the hot air balloon with a dry cleaning bag, a few straws for a frame, and a little pile of burning sterno as a heat source. Then it was up, up, and away!
I have a strange feeling that if my kids were to copy that little trick, they might be branded as junior terrorists at this point.

No, the thing to do is to bring back Beakman's World ! With all due respect to Bill Nye, Beakman ruled.

SPARC64-V: Quick Fix for Sun's Problems.Sun Microsystems has many problems, but the single biggest problem is the UltraSPARC III. All its competitors easily outperform it. Some of the competitors are the Power4, Power4+, Madison, Pentium 4, and SPARC64-V. Just look at the performance statistics at SPEC and TPC.
However, this single biggest problem also has an easy solution. Sun merely needs to jettison its SPARC processor R&D team and to adopt the SPARC64-V and the SPARC64-VI. The latter is a dual-core chip just like the well-regarded Power4. Sun could easily redesign its server boards within a month to accept the SPARC64 chips.
The SPARC64-V and SPARC64-VI are radically different from the UltraSPARC III. The former were designed and built almost exclusively by native talent (i. e. Japanese citizens). The UltraSPARC III was built by H-1B workers because Sun, Intel, and other companies claim that they cannot find enough native talent (i. e. American citizen) who are good enough -- even during a period 8% unemployment in Silicon Valley.
The issue here is mismanagement at Sun. Specifically, the management up to Scott McNealy himself refuses to adopt the SPARC64-V/VI. Why would any company refuse to adopt a processor that outperforms its own processor, that is readily available, that executes an identical instruction set , and that would immediately boost the performance of all the servers sold by said company? Why? The answer is deliberate mismanagement at Sun.

On Concluding that China's Space Program is ThreatWe can easily conclude that China's space program is a threat by simply looking at the facts. First, China is still an impoverished country, and boatloads of Chinese attempt to sneak into San Francisco harbor several times annually. Why would the Chinese spend billions of dollars on a space program when the living standard of so many Chinese is desperately pathetic? That money would be better spent on health programs, education, etc.
The only conceivable reason that the Chinese (which includes the people in Taiwan province and Hong Kong) are developing their space program is to advance their military technology and their special brand of nationalism, which is based on race. (Another name for this nationalism is fascism.)
In addition, there is a moral crisis in China. According to "China Detains Health Official for Publicizing AIDS Coverup", the Chinese arrested (and possibly tortured) a person for revealing that Chinese officials had attempted to sell AIDS-tainted blood products to Americans in the USA. Further, the Chinese still practice female infanticide and abortions targetting female fetuses. The ratio of male babies to female babies is 1.15 and has resulted in a dire shortage of marriage-age females. Responding to this shortage, Chinese men resort to kidnapping Vietnamese women to force them into marriage. When they try to escape, the men cut their achilles tendon, according to the "Wall Street Journal" (1999).
The billions of dollars wasted on China's military-based space program would be better spent on educating the Chinese about Western notions of right and wrong. There is simply a bankruptcy of values in China.

Re:God's Pals
also happens to forbid the government from promoting atheism.
Ain't that a relief
When the government promotes monotheism it is religious opression of Native American beliefs. The constituion forbids it.
Oppression? what is stopping the Native Americans from still practicing their religion? They are not being prevented from doing any such thing. THey are not being persecuted for their polytheistic beliefs so where exactly does the oppression come in again?
"not one of the first six Presidents of the United States was an orthodox Christian."-- Encyclopedia Brittanica
Nitpick: Not all of the Founding Fathers were made up of the first 6 Presidents of the US as there were more than 6 Founding Fathers for one thing. I'm sure there are some Presidents who aren't Christian although I'm sure there are very few.
How about George Washington? Oops, not Christian.
John Adams maybe? Nope.
Not really but he did believe in having religion. He recognized the abuses, large and small, that religious belief lends itself to, but he also believed that religion could be a force for good in individual lives and in society at large. His extensive reading (especially in the classics), led him to believe that this view applied not only to Christianity, but to all religions.
Perhaps Benjamin Franklin? No.
Maybe you meant Thomas Jefferson? Sorry.
Or James Madison? Nope.
Does not say either way but as you can see Madison says what you people can't seem to figure out in the phrase you often quote from the Constitution. He does not want you to lose your rights just because of your religion. It does not mean that the gov't can't have or make religious references. As chairman of the House conference committee on the Bill of Rights, Madison's original draft was among the most ambitious: "the civil rights of none shall be abridged on account of religious belief or worship...nor shall the full and equal rights of conscience be in any manner, or on any pretext, infringed...." Though somewhat less expansive in its protections, the final version--"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" --clearly bears the Madison stamp.

GNU Community can Help AMDWhat is becoming clear is that the platform of choice in the engineering community is Linux running on top of either x86 chips or Power chips. The GNU community could help AMD by restricting the GNU compilers to using only an efficient subset of the x86 instruction set when they generate code. The compilers specially developed by Intel do just that in order to speed applications.
The benefit here is that AMD can focus on performance-boosting only those instructions that the GNU compilers will use. The new K9 only needs to be able to execute the remainder of the instruction set, regardless of speed.
AMD has a tough task. The K9 must execute the legacy x86 instructions, the MMX instructions, the SSE/SSE2 instructions, the 3DNOW! instructions, and the x86-64 instructions. This will be a debugging nightmare.

Re:win/win
My question: why must one side lose and the other win? Why don't the Israelis and the Palestinians work together and create a secular democratic government? Jews and Arabs can work and live side by side. This is a win/win situation! Let economic freedom and inter-dependencies foster peace.
That is the conclusion "leftist" intellectuals like Eqbal Ahmad and Edward Said eventually reached. However, you have to understand that if Israel becomes a multiethnic pluralistic democracy, it is no longer Israel. Zionism is predicated on Jewish sovereignty. Israel without Zionism is a tough sell to Israelis (because it eventually means Palestine).
Conversely, the single state solution requires Palestinians accept their disenfranchisement. When the UN partitioned Palestine, Jews comprised about 31% of the population and owned 7% of the land. The plan awarded them more than half the country, and the 1948 war and expulsions disenfranchised hundreds of thousands more Palestinians. When Ahmad and Said began preaching the single state solution, it was blasphemous to mainstream Palestinian nationalists. Now the Palestinian body politic is more receptive to such a message. But the same weariness which created this spirit of compromise has empowered a competing religious radicalism which doesn't know the concept of compromise and will actively disrupt any hint of it.
Is it hopeless? Yes and no. The reality is a single state solution is all but inevitable. Israel's Jewish population is shrinking and its Palestinian population (Muslim, Christian and Druze) is growing. If you count non-Israeli citizens in the occupied territories, Palestinians under Israeli rule will soon outnumber Jews. While the current administration envisions a South African style minority rule surrounded by Palestinian Bantustans, such a model is not sustainable. In the long run it will suffer the same fate as South Africa: pluralistic multiethnic democracy.
". . . Let us not today fling accusation at the murderers. What causehave we to complain about their fierce hatred to us? For eight years now, they sit in their refugee camps in Gaza, and before their eyes we TURN into our homestead the land and villages in which they and their forefathers have lived. We should demand his blood not from the [Palestinian] Arabs of Gaza but from ourselves. . . . Let us make our reckoning today. We are a generation of settlers, and without the steel helmet and gun barrel, we shall not be able to plant a tree or build a house. . . . Let us not be afraid to see the hatred the accompanies and consumes the lives of hundreds of thousands of [Palestinian] Arabs who sit all around us and wait the moment when their hand will be able to reach our blood."

Multiple language support
The multiple languages argument is moot. The Java VM supports several languages, of which JPython is the most well known. The .net support for other languages isn't much better than Javas. In particular the managed C++ requires quite extensive rewrites to make it run properly in the .net framework.operator overloading, support for delegates
I'd call the lack of these in Java compared to C# (I see we're not comparing platforms anymore) to be a good thing. And apparently so does other people.native integration
Ever heard of JNI? Or maybe you are referring to unmanaged code? Personally I think it's a good thing to have good separation between native and non-native code. Besides, unmanaged code totally breaks the security model.superior class library
Are you kidding me? Examples please. The .net class libraries are not as well evolved as the Java ones. I'd argue that the biggest problem with the Java class libraries are that they have too much in them (i.e. bloat).better reflection services
I am not qualified to comment on this.COM+ integration
Obviously .net has COM+ integration. Wether it's useful or not I'll leave to others to decide. Especially with regards to the usefulness for Unix/Linux people. If you really want COM+ integration though, you can check out the JavaBeans to ActiveX bridge.built-in XML features
Java also has built-in XML support. Both for SAX and DOM. You might also want to read this for more information.By using
Let's see... Two lines of code versus one line plus an XML file. I'll take the two lines of code please. .NET Remoting, I can do that with ONE line of code and put all configuration in an XML file. The point is silly though, since it's very easy on both platforms.
Hm, the REAL question is why people are so fond and liking of Sun. They are *at least* as evil as Microsoft..

Re:And still no native OS X offering...
I'm not quite certain where you're getting your launch information from...ever since the initial Alpha release OOo OS X X11 has shipped with AppleScripts that allow a single double-click to launch both the X server and application, no command line needed. Each copy now ships with Terry Teague's Start OpenOffice.org applet that does this as well as provide Finder document associations for double clicking documents directly and also drag and drop font conversion. If you're a geek who wants to start it from the command line, you can, but steps have definitely been taken to make it accessible to people who have no clue what a Terminal is. ed

Happy indeed
I've used StarOffice before (when it was totally free), i didnt like it.. but i also had no use for it. It was too ugly and buggy
.. i then got AbiWord which was nice looking but super buggy (random closes, unable to open files even though they arent corrupt)
A few weeks ago I began writing a screenplay and was looking for a free screenplay writing application.. Thanks to google I found a nice screenplay macro package (forum about it) for OpenOffice.org. I downloaded OOe and its really great. I havent found any bugs and it looks better than staroffice =P -

But I degress, one account I've had for around 4 years now would be broken due to spam if it wasn't for yahoo's nice filters, now I don't see a drop of it. But my 'Bulk Mail' folder will fill up my 4meg account often in about a week, and I only maintain about 100-200k of saved stuff in there. Timing is Bad: MacOS X vs. Linux on x86Unfortunately, porting MacOS X to x86 brings MacOS into direct competition against Linux on x86, and MacOS offers no significant value over and above Linux. Both operating systems (OSes) are UNIX variants. Sure. The graphical user interface (GUI) of MacOS is better than the GUIs available for Linux, but the latter is improving. It has an army of programmers and beta testers that MacOS developers simply cannot match. Further, the support of IBM for Linux guarantees that, in the foreseeable future, Linux will operate in a fashion that is rock solid.
What Steve Jobs, if he had any sense, needs to do is to add ECC (error correction code) memory to the G5 to create a variant of the G5 and call it "G5-W". The G5-W would essentially be a workstation. Then Jobs should work with IBM and RedHat Linux to certify that RedHat Linux runs on the G5-W. Apple can be the de facto workstation division of IBM. Apple retains the original G5 for consumers but enters the more lucrative market for workstations. Margins for workstations are significantly higher than they are for mere personal computers.
Moreover IBM has been wanting to do a tour-de-force in the workstation market, but there are all these pesky Pentium 4 boxes in that market. With the G5, IBM can sell at machine that is competitive with the very best Pentium boxes. The floating-point unit of the PPC970 should make those engineering calculations really fly.
Selling a significant number of processors in the workstation market helps to amortize the cost (on the order of billions of dollars) of processor development. The success of the G5 actually helps IBM's processor division.
Of course, the implicit observation here is that Sun Microsystems is dead meat. Sun is expected to lose about $300 million for the 1st quarter of FY2004, according to "Sun warns of hefty loss". The Power4 and variants (Power4+, PowerPC970, etc.) are killing Sun at the market's high end (for both workstations and servers), where Sun has traditionally obtained most of its profits.

Re:Esperanto, for what?
Your three categories are a bit too simple. I'm not a native english speaker, I learned it at school and I use it every day at work. But I'm not fluent after 9 years of studies.
I'm from the esperantists crowd for one year now. I'm more fluent in esperanto than in english after just one year.
I have no ridiculous dogmatic reason to refuse to learn english. But the problem is quite simple : english is not an international language. It's very hard to learn, past the basis which are quite easy. Maybe some readings will give some more clues : "These Terrans Are Real Masochists".

One Day, Linux will be dominant in BrazilLinux and other open-source software have a good chance of beating out Windows and commercial software in the Brazilian market simply because Windows and other commercial software is not free there. According to "Tracking Software Piracy Around the World", the rate of software piracy in Brazil is 50%. Half of the copies of Windows and other commercial software installed on machines in Brazil were actually paid by the user.
By contrast, the rate of software piracy in China (which includes Taiwan province and Hong Kong) is about 93%. In short, the Chinese simply steal any software that they do not wish to buy.
The adoption rate of Linux and open-source software in Brazil will be much higher than the rate in China. IBM has made a good strategic move by investing in Brazil. Other American companies should follow suit: divert investments away from China and into Brazil.

Hong Kongers Support BeijingThree people died in the accidental bombing of the Chinese embassy in Serbia, according to "China mourns victims of Belgrade embassy bombing". Then, the Chinese in both China and outside China erupted into ugly, violent protests. The Chinese threw stones and other projectiles at the American embassy in China. The Chinese also attacked some Americans. " The residence of the US Consul General in the south-western city of Chengdu was stormed and partially burned
." (reference: "World: Asia-Pacific China backs embassy protests")The Chinese themselves murdered at 100,000 Tibetans, yet the Chinese in Hong Kong and elsewhere are absolutely silent. No protests. Nothing. Nada. The education system in Hong Kong teaches children that Tibet is an integral part of mainland China while the Chinese arrest, torture, and kill Tibetan nuns.
It is very clear that the Hong Kongers support Beijing. According to a CNN/Time poll, more than 60% of the Hong Kongers supported placing Hong Kong under the rule of Beijing.
What does Beijing support? It supported both Pol Pot and the Serbian military that attempted to commit mass murder in Kosovo.
-
Hong Kongers Support Beijing: the Facts are ClearCertainly, some Hong Kongers oppose the Chinese government but the majority of the Hong Kongers support it and its atrocious actions, which includes backing the Serbian army in its campaign of military aggression against the men, women, and children of Kosovar. According to "CNN/Time poll", more than 60% of Hong Kongers enthusiastically supported placing Hong Kong under the rule of Beijing.
Also, please read "World: Asia-Pacific China backs embassy protests". The Chinese fully supported the Serbians in their campaign of terror. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) under American command attempted to stop the slaughter by knocking out Serbian military units. NATO deliberately attempted to avoid hitting civilian targets in Serbia, but some bombs accidentally hit the Chinese embassy.
Shortly thereafter, the Chinese in both China and outside China erupted into ugly, violent protests. The Chinese threw stones and other projectiles at the American embassy in China. The Chinese also attacked some Americans. " The residence of the US Consul General in the south-western city of Chengdu was stormed and partially burned

Re:Great News for Russia: Linux and Moody's UpgradTaiwan is a state that supports the geopolitical objectives of mainland China. While the Chinese army is beat, raping, and killing Tibetan nuns, the Taiwanese government insists that Tibet should be integrated into China. The Taiwanese education system teaches that Tibet is part of China, and the Taiwanese constitution says so.
It is sick and disgusting. (reference: "Reality of Taiwan") The USA should immediately stop selling weapons to China.
-
Russia is better than China!!There are numerous differences between the Russians and the Chinese.
- The Russians allow autonomy for Chechnya (but not independence). The Chinese do not allow autonomy for Tibet. The Chinese have stationed thousands of soldiers in Tibet and have tortured and killed Tibetans nuns and children. The Taiwanese support integrating Tibet into one China.
- The Chinese have attempted to sell AIDS-contaminated blood products to Americans. The Russians have never stooped this low. Please read "Great News for Russia: Linux and Moody's Upgrade"
- The majority of spies for the former Soviet Union did not come from the Russian immigrant community that fled Soviet tyanny. On the other hand, the majority of spies for mainland China come from the Chinese community that immigrated from Taiwan.
The best way for Americans, at a personal level, to deal with the Chinese is to boycott all products made in China (which includes Hong Kong and Taiwan). Further, avoid putting money into any mutual fund that invests in companies based in China (which includes Hong Kong and Taiwan).

Great News for Russia: Linux and Moody's Upgrade
News that IBM is opening a Linux Competency Center in Russia comes a day before Moody's Investors Service upgrades Russia's foreign debt to investment grade, according to "Russia Earns Investment-Grade Status". These developments are wonderful news for Russia and the West.
Russia certainly has many flaws: there are signs that civil rights are being abridged in Russia under the Putin government. However, Russia is far ahead of China in human rights, civil rights, and basic decency. Consider the recent atrocity described in "China Detains Health Official for Publicizing AIDS Coverup". The Chinese arrested (and possibly tortured) a person for revealing that Chinese officials had attempted to sell AIDS-tainted blood products to Americans in the USA.
It is a no-brainer as to which country deserves American support. American companies should bypass China and put all their investments into Russia and Eastern Europe. American consumers can encourage the American companies to do so by boycotting any product or service that is "Made in China" (which includes "Made in Hong Kong" or "Made in Taiwan"). Furthermore, we should pull our money out of mutual funds that invest in any company located in China (which includes Hong Kong and Taiwan).
It is imperative (for the preservation of Western society) that Russia outperforms China economically. The Russian value system shares much more in common with the American value system than the Chinese value system.

Web Site can Assist Terrorism: China's News AgencyThe idea of identifying terrorist web sites is excellent as long as the American government is consistent in its policies. The list of terrorist groups should also include the web sites for the following organization.
The "China People's Daily" is run by the Beijing government and is the mouthpiece of the Chinese government. It has conducted a number of terrorist activities in Tibet. You can find some descriptions at Tibet Online and Amnesty International.
Further, operatives of the "China People's Daily" were stationed at the Chinese embassy in Serbia in 1999 when the embassed was hit by American bombs. The majority of people in China (which includes Taiwan Province and Hong Kong) supported the Serbian military aggression against the Kosovars. The Serbians executed thousands of men, women, and children in Kosovar in an attempt to remove them from Kosovo: the Serbia military raped the women and slit the throats of the children. The Americans sent military forces to Serbia in an attempt to stop the genocide. At the time, Chinese operatives of the "China People's Daily" operated secretly from the relative safety of the embassy and relayed communications to the Serbian army and helped the Serbians to defeat American electronic warfare. (reference: "NATO hit embassy on purpose")
The Serbian aggression against the Kosovars was strongly supported by the Chinese and is the first major case of genocide after the genocide of the Cambodians by Pol Pot. The Chinese also supported Pol Pot.

Analysis of Offshoring versus H-1B/L-1 WorkersThere are only 4 combinations of possibilities concerning the issue of foreign labor. Below are the 4 combinations.
- no offshoring and no H-1B/L-1 employment
- no offshoring and H-1B/L-1 employment
- offshoring and no H-1B/L-1 employment
- offshoring and H-1B/L-1 employment
To eliminate some combinations that are impossible, we first consider whether we can eliminate offshoring. Offshoring occurs from the moment that Americans engage in trade with any foreign country. For example, if we buy apples grown in Thailand, then we are engaging in offshoring because the foreign labor grew those apples. Can we eliminate foreign trade? No.
The stickier question is whether offshoring eliminates jobs. According to the "The misery of manufacturing", "The Economist" says, "No." The USA is a big market, and manufacturers locate engineering and design centers in the market in which they have a significant presence. For example, Hyundai is now building a factory and design center in the USA, according to "Speed Kills" by "Forbes".
Therefore, we cannot eliminate offshoring, and it is neither bad nor good. It is neutral. We are left with only option #3 (offshoring and no H-1B/L-1 employment) and option #4 (offshoring and H-1B/L-1 employment).
Can we eliminate H-1B/L-1 employment? Absolutely yes. Since companies can offshore their R&D work, they can build an R&D center in India and hire all the engineers that they claim to need. Each engineer hired in India will cost only 1/10 of the cost of an H-1B/L-1 engineer.
Supporters of H-1B/L-1 employment say that an Indian employed as an H-1B worker in the USA will spend his $100,000 salary in the USA, thus creating more jobs. That observation is bogus. If the Indian wants to work for an American company, he should go back to India to work at $5,000 at the American site in Bangalore. The American company will then save $95,000. That money does not simply sit idly in the bank. The American company will re-invest that $95,000 into the domestic facilities and hire an American citizen.
Furthermore, when Hyundai sets up its design center in the USA, the Indian will be in India, and the jobs at the design center will go to American citizens.
In short, option #3 (offshoring but no H-1B/L-1 employment) is the best scenario. In fact, offshoring defeats the strongest bogus argument supporting H-1B/L-1 employment. When a company like Google says that it absolutely needs to hire H-1B/L-1 workers because Americans are not good enough, then we say, "Fine. Set up shop overseas. There is plenty of labor there."
Please read "H-1B Myths". Contact your representative in Washington and tell them to terminate the H-1B/L-1 program. Do not wait for the person sitting at the next computer terminal to do your civic duty. Move your ass. Do the your job.

Hello Slashdotters, Linus here. Over the last 10 years we have done a great job in making Linux into an amazing operating system. We still have a ways to go if we want to defeat Microsoft, but I have no doubt we will get there if a major problem is dealt with.
This major problem is Richard Stallman (aka RMS). For years he has been the thorn in Linux's side. First, it's bad enough that he insists that everyone call Linux, GNU/Linux, as if he had anything to do with the initial creation or naming of Linux.
That isn't the biggest problem. The biggest problem is his appearance and attitude. The guy admits to being a goat fucker. Who is going to take someone who says that seriously? Stallman hasn't bathed in decades. Who is going to want an operating system from someone who hasn't bathed in 20 years? As much as any of us may hate Bill Gates, he takes a shower every day, and that helped Microsoft be in the position it now is in. I am taking a shower every day to help Linux. Are you?
Stallman plucks dandruff out of his hair while he talks to you. That alone has got to turn you off Linux.
Stallman can't even clean up after himself. This is equally true in his code just as much as he leaves used condoms all over the place. Frankly, his homosexual behavior and sex with goats that leaves all of these used condoms all over the place is simply unacceptable and makes Linux look like a joke. Please don't take this the wrong way. I have nothing against homosexuality (although having sex with goats is just plain sick) except when it interferes with Linux.
In conclusion, I am tired of Dirty GNU Hippies like Stallman causing problems for Linux. He must be stopped at all costs. I call on the Slashdot community to rise up and reject Stallman. Do it for Linux! -

The Linux Gay ConspiracyIt has come to my attention that the entire Linux community is a hotbed of so called 'alternative sexuality,' which includes anything from hedonistic orgies to homosexuality to pedophilia.
What better way of demonstrating this than by looking at the hidden messages contained within the names of some of Linux's most outspoken advocates:
- Linus Torvalds [microsoft.com] is an anagram of slit anus or VD 'L,' clearly referring to himself by the first initial.
- Richard M. Stallman [geocities.com], spokespervert for the Gaysex's Not Unusual 'movement' is an anagram of mans cram thrill ad.
- Alan Cox [microsoft.com] is barely an anagram of anal cox which is just so filthy and unchristian it unnerves me.
I'm sure that Eric S. Raymond, composer of the satanic homosexual [goatse.cx] propaganda diatribe The Cathedral and the Bizarre, is probably an anagram of something queer, but we don't need to look that far as we know he's always shoving a gun up some poor little boy's rectum. Update: Eric S. Raymond is actually an anagram for secondary rim and cord in my arse. It just goes to show you that he is indeed queer.
Update the Second: It is also documented that Evil Sicko Gaymond is responsible for a nauseating piece of code called Fetchmail [microsoft.com], which is obviously sinister sodomite slang for 'Felch Male' -- a disgusting practise. For those not in the know, 'felching' is the act performed by two perverts wherein one sucks their own post-coital ejaculate out of the other's rectum. In fact, it appears that the dirty Linux faggots set out to undermine the good Republican institution of e-mail, turning it into 'e-male.'
As far as Richard 'Master' Stallman goes, that filthy fudge-packer was actually quoted [salon.com] on leftist commie propaganda site Salon.com as saying the following: 'I've been resistant to the pressure to conform in any circumstance,' he says. 'It's about being able to question conventional wisdom,' he asserts. 'I believe in love, but not monogamy,' he says plainly.
And this isn't a made up troll bullshit either! He actually stated this tripe, which makes it obvious that he is trying to politely say that he's a flaming homo [comp-u-geek.net] slut [rotten.com]!
Speaking about 'flaming,' who better to point out as a filthy chutney ferret than Slashdot's very own self-confessed pederast Jon Katz. Although an obvious deviant anagram cannot be found from his name, he has already confessed, nay boasted of the homosexual [goatse.cx] perversion of corrupting the innocence of young children [slashdot.org]. To quote from the article linked:
'I've got a rare kidney disease,' I told her. 'I have to go to the bathroom a lot. You can come with me if you want, but it takes a while. Is that okay with you? Do you want a note from my doctor?'
Is this why you were touching your penis [rotten.com] in the cinema, Jon? And letting the other boys touch it too?
We should also point out that Jon Katz refers to himself as 'Slashdot's resident Gasbag.' Is there any more doubt? For those fortunate few who aren't aware of the list of homosexual [goatse.cx] terminology found inside the Linux 'Sauce Code,' a 'Gasbag' is a pervert who gains sexual gratification from having a thin straw inserted into his urethra (or to use the common parlance, 'piss-pipe'), then his

That argument is wrong. . .But don't feel bad. It's the same one the Air Force was selling to its soldiers who worked the early radar arrays, and its the first line of defense which was adopted and which has been used ever since by big business and the government. The argument being, "If the power is too low to cause damage through heating, then there is no danger."
If only this were true!
There is a mountain of science which has recognized the following. . .
1. Biological nervous systems are electrochemical in nature. This is why EEG scanners work; they are able to pick up on EM activity generated by the brain. In all systems where electromagnetic signals are integral, foriegn signals can have an impact.
2. There are documented mechanisms [geocities.com] through which low power, non-ionizing EM fields can affect the function of the nervous system.
3. Very small currents are all that are needed to causes these effects.
4. High frequency signals which are modulated to replicate lower frequencies, (As seen in Cell phone technology), are sufficient to cause effects.
5. The ocean of EM we live in DOES have an effect. Sleep, reproductive and various other biological cycles have been shown to be deeply affected, and often reliant upon ambient EM from the Earth and sky.
Here's an article [protectingourhealth.org] with some photos of slices of brain tissue taken from rats exposed to cell phone EM. The effects are real.

Re:A glaring omission
Well yes, Esperanto has not been around for a thousand years, but it does however have more than a hundred years of history. It is indeed a stupid idea that languages are written down in stone and do not evolve. That's probably why Esperanto evolves. A former UN translator, Claude Piron, wrote a few notes on the evolution of Esperanto in his article: Evolution is Proof of Life.

Even a Nobel Prize Winner can be WrongScientific freedom has its limits. Suppose that an applied physicist wishes to research how to build a better bazooka. Is the physicist allowed to build a working bazooka in his laboratory without restriction or interference from the federal government?
The issue with Thomas Butler is that he lied to FBI agents about how he disposed of samples of the plague. In terms of deadliness, the plague is far worse than any bazooka. So, the FBI agents justifiably arrested him. The government is entitled to protect its citizens.
Nonetheless, Dr. Peter Agre deserves his Nobel prize. He is a fine example of native talent (not foreign talent like H-1B workers) at its best. We need not worry about diminishing the quality of American research if the government were to restrict -- or even, completely eliminate -- foreign workers who enter the USA to work at its scientific labs.

Apple is positioning G5 and MacOS as WorkstationsOur suspicions are confirmed. According to "Apple Eyes UNIX Market with Panther", Apple is positioning the Mac OS-X 10.3 as an operating system for workstations. Apple is expected to take a sizeable chunk of the market for workstation -- both Windows and UNIX. Apple will likely hurt Sun Microsystems the most.
Steve Jobs is really amazing. He will be the first person to successfully establish a non-x86 processor as a viable alternative to the x86 processors. The entire ill-fated consortium called the Advanced Computing Environment (which promoted MIPS R2000), backed by professors from Stanford University, could not do it. The gang (which promoted the PowerPC) of IBM, Motorola, and Apple (under the old CEO) could not do it.
Now, here comes Steve Jobs. Apple, under his leadership, manages to do it. How does he do it? What's his secret? You can be sure that ECC memory for the G5 is on its way.

Seymour would approve of the focus
When the first supercomputer was built on Seymour Cray's farm by 34 guys with 1 PhD among them (a junior programmer) the key technology turned out to have been refrigeration devised by a kid from the Amana Colonies. Seymour spent his career fighting heat as he strove to get path-lengths between components smaller thereby driving up power density as the cube of his system's scale and speed. He most certainly would have approved of the focus if not the approach taken by the Stanford team.

Good free software for Windows
Despite Microsoft's press releases to the contrary, Windows machines are not secure and need decent firewall and antivirus software. I see others have already mentioned the Kerio firewall, so I'll just add that it can be easily extended with Sponge's excellent, freely available filters. (I'm using set 2, but there are versions that are both more or less rigorous). I've also AVG Antivirus installed it seems to work well enough.
Some other useful free utilities:
Tclockex
A small utility that greatly increases the usefullness of the system tray clock. You can have the date as well as the time, as well as a resource monitor that lets you know at a glance how the system is doing.
AboutTime"
A little applet that sets the system clock from a list of time servers. Works well and unobtrusively.
7-zip
An easy to use explorer plug-in that understands most kinds of compressed files.
CDex
A great tool for ripping / converting CDs and mp3s.
X-teq>
A very powerful utility that lets you change pretty much everything that's changeable in Windows. Allows you to set Windows update registration done, which would only be useful to pirates and won't be mentioned here.
The Proxomitron
A web proxy that strips out ads, pop-ups and other garbage.
I'm more familiar with Redhat, but I have no doubt Mandrake will come out of the box with programs that are functionally equivalent to the ones listed here. -
Not Funny: Fascist Nation Makes Leap Into SpaceDefinitely, the Chinese advancement into space is alarming because the Chinese space agency is an integral part of the military agencies in China. By contrast, NASA in the USA is a civilian effort. The MSNBC article reports that the Chinese space effort is super-secretive and that its astronauts receive training via a military program.
As well, you can be sure that Taiwan supplied China with many of the key technologies that accelerated its space program. Numerous Taiwanese living in the USA have been arrested over the years on charges of spying on behalf of mainland China. Some of those arrests involved the theft of American aerospace technology.
To understand why the Chinese space effort is ominous, you need to read no further than the article, "China Detains Health Official for Publicizing AIDS Coverup". Within the same month that the Chinese express fascist pride at their ability to challenge democracies like the USA in space technology, the Chinese arrested and imprisoned a person who revealed an AIDS coverup. This person revealed information that the Chinese were trying to sell AIDS-tained blood products to Americans in 1993-1994.
