Re:Not him, them!
I'm pretty sure those domestic gross numbers are purely box office numbers (and Bloodrayne was $2.4MM, not $1.55MM (which was opening weekend), but that's just nitpicky). It's very possible, though I haven't found numbers to support the theory, that the DVD sales/rentals can add significantly to these figures. Does anyone know if generally how box office revenue compares to DVD revenue, specifically from the studio's perspective?
However, beyond financials, you're right - why would a studio want to associate themselves with such utter crap? All three of the movies you identified are listed in IMDB's worst 100 movies of all time, with House of the Dead claiming the worst of the 3 at the #20 worst movie ever. That's quite a track record.

No One Will Be Fired
Heckuva job, Negroponte and McConnell.
Or, should I say, Bush has shown his contempt for intelligence once again, and will yet again when he doesn't fire anyone for this serious secrecy breach. Of course, Bush will continue to keep more secrets than all previous American governments combined, and illegally invade Americans' privacy all day with wiretaps and the datamining that Orwell described. America serves at the president's pleasure.
I guess terrorists must have infiltrated the government's Powerpoint training program, because they're always the culprits, and Bush's divine right is never wrong. -

Re:In 5.. 4.. 3.. 2..
Wouldn't you agree that although a D&D freak may take obsession pretty far, they still are able to discern reality from entertainment (except for Tom Hanks, of course)? It's one thing to obsess over fiction, but once you embrace that fiction as reality, build your life around it, and work to promote this delusional state to others, that's when it crosses the line from entertainment to near-madness (but sanctioned madness, which seems to make it OK).

Re:Faith is a poison upon mankind.Belief in something with no scientific proof is the foundation of just about every failed adventure in human-kind.
Paraphrasing Contact:
Palmer: Did you love your father?
Ellie: Yes.
Palmer: Prove it.
We know all sorts of things. Our knowledge is vast, but compared to the infinity of space, insignificant. If nothing else, quantum physics teaches us that there are many gray areas, where things are not as cut-and-dried as they seem. Belief and/or faith in something without scientific proof is not the death of Mankind -- belief and/or faith in something when the evidence before contradicts that belief/faith is where the madness lies.

Re:two yearsThe whole business of risk management is tricky exactly because it is hard to define what the risk is. Economists tried to get risk into their formulas without success, and no matter how self-understandable the concept might be, when an accident occurs all kinds of other things start to work. You say It's one thing if someone deliberately avoids their responsibility and in so doing cause an accident. It's quite another when an accident occurs through no real fault of a diligent and responsible person. and I of course agree, but I am not sure how this logic can be translated/applied to pretty much any real-life accident. First off, notice that, by their very definition, corporations are societies that are trying to limit their responsibility. And how to determine whether a particular Co, by trying to limit their responsibility, is also trying to avoid it? What if the risk management is just one among other strategies to limit the responsibility?
Furthermore, we shouldn't neglect other logics of accident. Let's assume that it is undisputed that a particular accident was: the accident that occurred was one that any honest person would accept was a reasonable possibility, and furthermore, one which people so accept as a possibility every single day. and that the responsibility was established beyond any doubt of anybody. Very idealized situation, but let's assume in its spirit that, for instance, after an accident and a court settlement a large amount of money was awarded to a person X suing a company Y. Like in the news: X got severely injured and after going to the court got awarded from Y a large amount of money. Isn't there something strange/perverse/bizarre about this even if there is nothing left to be clarified about the responsibility of people involved? Accidents happen. They are erratic events which we cannot predict, but nonetheless accept the possibility of. This reminds me of the Atom Egoyan's movie The Sweet Hereafter, where the lawyer is trying to rally people to sue after a nasty accident, and when somebody asks him why should they sue since it was an accident after all, he replies that to him word accident means nothing, but rather that somebody somewhere in some company decided to save some money and thereby make the school bus involved in the accident less safe... -

The Future of Food (documentary)
For an interesting look at the Monsanto history, GM foods, risks and impact across North America, I recommend you watch the documentary "The Future of Food" (torrent).
Description:
THE FUTURE OF FOOD offers an in-depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically engineered foods that have quietly filled U.S. grocery store shelves for the past decade.
From the prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada to the fields of Oaxaca, Mexico, this film gives a voice to farmers whose lives and livelihoods have been negatively impacted by this new technology. The health implications, government policies and push towards globalization are all part of the reason why many people are alarmed by the introduction of genetically altered crops into our food supply.
Shot on location in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, THE FUTURE OF FOOD examines the complex web of market and political forces that are changing what we eat as huge multinational corporations seek to control the world's food system. The film also explores alternatives to large-scale industrial agriculture, placing organic and sustainable agriculture as real solutions to the farm crisis today.

The rising importance of media
I just watched two movies: Control Room (2004) about the media coverage of the invasion of Iraq and Al Jazeera's role and The revolution will not be televised (2003) about the role of the private media in the coup in Venezuela in 2001. Neither of the two might be called very objective, but I see how difficult it would be to find an audience for more scientific analysis.
The common theme in both is how important the media has become. Now this is not really news, but during the last decade the media reaction has been part of e.g. military operation (embedded journalism) and there is a tremendous effort to control the pictures. Not so much to suppress any reporting, since it has become obvious that this will never work, but to control what is fed to the press. And unfortunately the press is not yet up to speed to get their informations from a wider number of sources.
Now with blogging, youtube, flickr etc. there seems to be a much wider range of possible information sources, even harder to suppress than in the past. But today we face the problem which of these sources to trust, there are just so many. There are attempts like newstrust, which tries to be a sort of slashdot moderation system on top of existing news. But I think we need much more of this. Like greasemonkey allows you to attach things to websites that the authors did not intend to be there, we need the option to attach other sources to any news and have a large body of people vote on which of these sources should be taken into account. I have no clue how to realize this, but this is a typical case: the government using FUD to strengthen their position. People can react and argue with the claims, but there should be a way for these comments to reach the public, not only via sites like slashdot, but by default. With the increase of media sources and media power we have to become better at using and evaluating media as a group, not only as single viewers and readers.

Not the Quality of the Movies
Is this an indication of movie quality, or another notch in the belt for the Blu-ray format?
In my opinion, this has nothing to do with movie quality.
It has to do with how recent the movie is. Ever wonder why it costs you $1 to rent the DVD of The Sting from Blockbuster while War of the Worlds will cost you $5.89? It's not because War of the Worlds is a different movie, it's just more recent.
Aside from the fact that the original Matrix came out in 1999 & the original Pirates movie came out in 2003, there's also the rating of the movies. All three Matrices were rated R, all three Pirates movies were rated PG-13. That's a big difference. Most parents will buy the Pirates movie and park their 10+ year old kid in front of them and consider it a babysitter.
Never underestimate how much an R rating will detract from your profits. America is full of parents who believe that their children will turn into a foaming nutcase if they catch a glimpse of an adult situation, nudity or violence.
My last point, Pirates is Disney. Never underestimate what the power of the mouse will do to promote a film no matter how crappy it is. -

Re:It was inevitableI think I've just become more of a skeptic lately, and I'm certainly hoping that there is a definitive end, but the fact that the show is confirmed to end doesn't necessarily mean that it will have that final conclusion we're all waiting for. Something that's been happening more often lately, is rather than completely killing off a series, they leave the end a bit open for a movie to end it all.
For example, Serenity http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379786/ was released after Firefly ended. Stargate just ended, and Stargate: The Ark of Truth http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0942903/ is being made to conclude the final season's storyline with destroying the Ori, and Stargate: Continuum is also in production. Even 24 has a movie being made now http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0813980/.
Given that when Battlestar was revived, it came back in the form of a 2hour miniseries, there is always the possibility that they could find earth in a movie to be released after the show ends. I mean, most likely the season will have a definitive end and they will find earth and ??? will happen, but there's always that possibility. I don't think it's too far-fetched considering I'm not sure even the show's producers know how the series will end at this point.

Developer motivation
I cannot really agree with these tests that just compare "start up tasks" like opening a file or booting the OS. There often is a good reason not to focus too much on these events, because don't happen that often. Responsiveness during use is a better comparison, and this is much harder. Modern machines do a lot of things in the background, like running full blown TCP/IP stacks, something the Mac Plus could not have done. And while opening a file 0.2 seconds faster will not really improve my productivity by much, having instant access to Google and Wikipedia does.
But anyway: Here is a quote from Andy Hertzfeld about how Steve Jobs motivated them to make the Mac boot faster (taken from the documentary The triumph of the nerds by Robert X. Cringley.)
Steve was upset that the Mac took too long to boot to boot up when you first turned it on so he tried motivating Larry Kenyon by telling him well you know how many millions of people are going to buy this machine - it's going to be millions of people and let's imagine that you can make it boot five seconds faster well that's five seconds times a million every day that's fifty lifetimes, if you can shave five seconds off that you're saving fifty lives. And so it was a nice way of thinking about it, and we did get it to go faster.

Re:Stop the insanity. My stepfather is Cree, and I spend much of my childhood on reserves. The indian act was supported by chiefs to keep women off their feet and in beds making babies so they could be beaten by their husbands. Look it up, it's true. Women in first nations are fighting for equality (still) but rarely get anywhere because they are (often quite literally) beaten back down. I have to say that I have seen *NO* evidence of this, ever. Not once.
Life on reserves is difficult, and I would say that native people are the most disenfranchised in Canada (to Americans reading this: they get treated with the same respect that black people get treated in the southern states.) However, I have seen no evidence that spousal abuse happens on the scale you claim. I'd go further. I believe that Native Americans are easily the most discriminated against racial group in North America, for evidence simply look at the media. Shows, movies, they always have their representative minority characters, black, indian, arabic, asian, it's not uncommon to see a very positive portrayal of a person from one of these groups in the media. Now think about portrayals of Natives, when is the last time you've seen a native actor in a movie or television show who isn't either some kind of medicine man, unsavory charcter from a reserve, or some other caricature?
There are ONLY TWO examples I can think of in all the media I've seen.
The most familiar to ./ers is probably Chakotay, unfortunately the character appeared to related more to South American indian tribes (the actor himself was American-Mexican, not an aboriginal), became a medicine man whenever his Native Americanness was brought up, and of course was on a space ship which kinda blows the rest of the relatability for native audiences (what, native kids are going to now pursue their dream of being a star ship captain?). The only other example I can think of is the police officer (Lorne Cardinal) off Corner Gas, sure he's not a complicated character by any means, it's a sitcom after all, but he's portrayed as a valuable member of the community who has a function other than jumping up to the audience and saying "Look at me! I'm native!".
My home town was next to a large reservation and as a result my high school had a lot of native students. There were some real nice smart kids among them, and I can just about guarantee that none of them went to university. Can't blame them of course, if you had never seen a single example of someone like you actually succeeding in an educated profession how hard would you pursue an education?
If people are really interested in native americans succeeding give them some damn role models! Have a doctor or lawyer show where a primary character is native, smart, and doesn't start talking about native rituals or ancient wisdom every chance they get. Heck even a native Brittney Spears or Brad Pitt to show them they can have sex appeal as natives (there's a reason that many native kids in my school started emulating black hip-hop culture). -
