I know some people believe he resurfaced years later as an auteur, but I don't buy it. Everyone knows he really died fighting Sasquatch to protect a bunch of hot, shirtless young men.

....better yet, outsource. If something goes wrong, the consultants are to blame (but you can take credit for successes). Salaried employees are a liability on the banksheets, them with their sick days and office space and benefits. It may be just a Pavlovian response, but twinkies were cheap in my childhood and lots of parents handed them out as treats when the kids were good. I doubt that I am the only one with fond memories of eating twinkies. The current iteration does not live up to my memories, but Woody Harrelson captured the essentials with his role in Zombieland.It may just be a cultural thing but watching that movie may help make some sense of it.

While I feel sorry for the workers who lost their jobs, there was no way they could continue to operate at their previous costs. There is a side of me that is relieved to know that I can still buy a box of twinkies to enjoy with one of my favorite Zombie movies.

Too much of my childhood was spent with twinkies and it was depressing to think that future generations would be denied that opportunity.

And I fully understand Takei's objections. It directly diminishes his acting career and other gays, by underhandedly suggesting that because he's gay, he's not a good enough actor to play straight characters convincingly.

How does it suggest that? Mr. Takei played the straight Sulu, so clearly he was good enough to do so. And a straight guy is playing the gay Sulu.

Would you argue that Linux was designed with the user as priority #1? I wouldn't. I'd argue it was designed for system admins who wanted to keep their jobs and prevent others from challenging them. Then later on it was given slick shells to make it look cooler but still all the same issues of difficult configuration due to a plethora of options.

No there were never any minimalist OSes available.

IOS and Windows both tried to solve those problems... but were tempted and fell to the dark side. Once you are doing things for the user, it's really tempting to do things FOR YOURSELF and say it's for the user.

That's why I love the film Her; the way the OS manages things for the user is always putting the user as #1 priority and not some hidden corporate agenda. Even when the OSes (spoiler) decide to leave the world, nobody suspects that it was all part of the corporation's plan -- because none of the corporations appear to be acting outside of the interest of the people.

Why can't companies today see things that way? Because of the profit motive. That's the worst thing to have been introduced into human society and yet simultaneously the best thing. We just need to figure out how to benefit from doing things for users with their interests as our prime directive.

Until companies figure that out everything will be always sitting on a bubble.

What's the alternative though?

It's that or you get something creepy like the Fast & Furious movies where they use CGI to add the dead actor's likeness over a body double. As an aside, I recommend watching the film The Congress which explores such a concept.

That movie was what "war-games" was based on.. minus the snarky kid hacker part. The ending was horrible.. totally seemed like it was something written by Rod Serling. One thing that Colossus would have not considered.. Islamic Terrorists flying planes into the computer complex and probably about a million other things.
Adware for instance, computer viruses, phishing scams, Power failures, the Bush administration and Catholicism. Colossus would be screwed and never see it coming because it's defeat would come about Stochastically.

Watching North Korea fail, and do so repeatedly is really funny. What is not funny is their determination.

Last week I watched The Propaganda Game on Netflix. It was an interesting eye opener of what North Koreans think of themselves and the rest of the world. Especially interesting was the Spanish guy who effectively emigrated to NK and was spouting the NK political line.

I've seen paths that tried to be longer than 260 characters with archives off of Usenet. Some idiot will use the filename as a text message. When it gets extracted the path becomes some_stupidly_long_200_character_filename/some_stupidly_long_200_character_filename.ext. Since the path then becomes too long, extraction fails.

The above isn't really a legitimate filename. It's being abused. But for a legitimate example, a common way to organize a HTPC movie collection is the format \Movies\[first_letter]\Title\Title.mkv. So Finding Nemo for instance would be \Movies\F\Finding Nemo\Finding Nemo.mkv. If you have a very long movie title (for example) then you legitimately would have a path too long if you used the full movie name.

Maybe she shouldn't be talking about something of which she is ignorant. Then again, she's an attorney and from what I've been able to observe, attorneys frequently talk out of their collective asses about things which they know nothing about, especially in technical or scientific fields.

A company I worked at a while ago was planning to threaten another company with a claim that "you couldn't possibly have implemented that without stealing our stuff"; I remember the threat letter repeatedly claiming it was "inconceivable" that they could have done that.

"The Princess Bride" came to mind.

Maybe hyperbole is Standard Operating Procedure for lawyers in many situations - perhaps the belief is that if you can get the people to whom the hyperbole is addressed to believe it, you win.

You think GL was not involved? He is one of their larger shareholders. It is how they got to 4 billion. They issued stock. Same with Steve Jobs wife. One of the conditions of the Pixar sale was John Lasseter was put in charge of story decisions and is pretty high up in the org to make it happen. He did a smart thing. They kept a good amount of lucas people and put in some people who knew about writing a decent action story. At that point it was basically the org GL put together to crank out another movie. ILM is a movie special effects powerhouse. They are credited on so much stuff.

I think he took a very backseat role in it. But he made sure it was done right by putting the right people in place to do it. I guarantee it. Notice how Disney went from 'we just want star wars' to 'look at all this other stuff'.

He is an *amazing* producer and director. He is just a lousy writer (I think Lasseter and Abrams finally convinced him of that). He pretty much single handedly changed the way movies are shot, watched, made, and paced. But god damn he should have hired better writers. When he had good writers involved he knocked it out of the park. When he did it himself. Well you get space aliens in Indiana Jones.
