Re:Yup
Problem with Fox is 90% of the content is brain-dead programming.
Hey, this is the network that gave us Titus, Firefly, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Arrested Development, and Futurama. They know how to put out some pretty good shows. Then they know how to take those pretty good shows away.

The SaintWhat was that Val Kilmer movie with the cold fusion where he wore the masks, and they gave the technology to the world for free?
That movie would be The Saint. It's okay... Elisabeth Shue looks really cute playing a nerdy scientist in glasses and kneesocks. -

Re:Price
All of Pixars films have grossed well in excess of $100M. And that's only in the US. There is also the merchandise revenue to consider. I think $7.4B is not a bad price. And remember it's in stock.

Re:The acceleration is good ...
Yeah, the top speed they're shooting for is a bit of a yawner (I've personally ridden a plain ol' 10-speed at >45 mph -- all you need is an abundance of "downhill" and a shortage of good sense, both of which I had access to in my teen's and early-20's -- an extra 15 or 20 mph doesn't exactly make a thrill ride out of it) but getting there in just a few seconds ought to "up" the old heartrate a bit (I'd also recommend more than a t-shirt and pair of riding shorts for the uniform, btw, unless they know of a town where the streets are paved in Nerf...)
Still, a rocket powered anything ranks pretty high on the cool-meter. I hope they videotape it from several different angles. (and a rocket-powered pickup truck would be GREAT for a real-life version of that famous scene from this movie -- maybe that's why that scene's been popping into my mind lately..."Say 'bye bye' to the nice police officer!...") -

Re:Foreign languages are complex...Well at least with subtitled movies you have some hint of the original subtext.
Worse is when films are dubbed so vocab needs to be matched to lip movements.
Or when actors of a different nationality to their characters are cast merely because they speak English.
Then there's news bulletins and documentaries where an English translation is loudly superimposed over the top of native speaker. You can still hear the tones of the person they're interviewing but it's drowned out due to the translation.
All because television programmers dumb down content because the average television viewer is perceived to be "too stupid" to concentrate on subtitles. I'll take subtitled content any day...

Are you a janitor?
Our lab relies heavily on contractors. This is how management tries to safe money. One day the lab found a cheaper cleaning company. Soon people noticed that their offices were not cleaned anymore. The janitors were still the same, mostly, except that they now had to work for the cheaper company. It turned out that the company would not provide enough clean mobs. It got so bad that the janitors had to bring their own mobs! Eventually the trained janitors started to quit and got replaced with even cheaper workers. Things got worse. Your company is treating you the same way. Are you a janitor? Well, at least our janitors did not have to ask
/. for help. Wake up!
Ever seen a really mad janitor? :-) -

Heheh one of my favorite movies
:) http://imdb.com/title/tt0084787/
MacReady: "I know I'm human. And if you were all these things, then you'd just attack me right now, so some of you are still human. This thing doesn't want to show itself, it wants to hide inside an imitation. It'll fight if it has to, but it's vulnerable out in the open. If it takes us over, then it has no more enemies, nobody left to kill it. And then it's won."
Reminds me of my fellow posters here on /. -
Re: i don't know about that...but am not very good at analyzing them at times. this means that i can't really be a critic
That hasn't stopped the thousands of shit-spouters on imdb.com!
And again, back on topic: I think there's a bit of confusion in this thread over "love" and "enjoy". I might say that I "loved" a movie, but really I didn't, I just enjoyed it an awful lot. If you really do "love" your job, you're making a big mistake, or kidding yourself. As long as you're doing it for money, you "love" your job just as much as a prostitute loves her clientele.

Re:Another method to predict the winners
Bring a decibel meter and a stopwatch and find the films with the loudest and longest:
That might not be very accurate, as most Sundance Grand Jury winners are often not among the happiest of movies.

Time for Quark!
Quark (1977) or Quark (1978) was a great show where Adam Quark, captain of a United Galactic Sanitation Patrol ship, and crew collected giant space baggies of trash.
What was old is new and in humour there is truth. -

Re:Blah.
Graham assumes that all avenues of work are open to all people, as long as they love what they want to do. The role of education isn't emphasized enough in his piece. Pontificating over the choice of fulfilling jobs available to someone with a Masters degree would seem far-removed from someone with only a high school education. Granted, that rules out most slashdotters.
Instead of trying to instill a belief in kids that work != pain, we should focus on education == opportunity. A lifelong love of learning will open many more doors for someone than trying to find a job you love with a limited skill set. Not to stereotype, but the majority of Asian parents I've worked with are extremely effective at emphasizing the value of education in their kids. Those values are a large factor behind the economic growth in China and SE Asia.
Of course, Judge Smails says "The world needs ditch diggers too." -
Re:The porn industry won't be such a big driver
That's very interesting. Buckaroo Banzai (Peter Weller) circa 1984 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086856/ also played a rock music scientist and did in fact make a very similar comment. I do know that the Banzai fanbase probably had something to do with the 2002 Odyssey 5 quote!

Oh, sure
I belive they have awards for best video, male performer, female performer, girl-girl scene, group sex scene, best three way, etc. Or at least that's what I remember from the "director's commentary" on Flashpoint, a Jenna Jameson flick directed by her former hubby, Brad Armstrong.
If you've never listened to porn with director's commentary, I highly recommend you find some, it's funny stuff. Highlights were something like:
"Now you know what girls do when they go to the bathroom together"
"If you ever have a chance to get a blow job from Jenna, I suggest you take it" (since they were going out or married at the time)
And my personal favorite, "Joannie Black takes anal like a trooper". -
Genius
Real Genius takes a freakin laser.

Re:Getting promoted to your incompetence level
The phrase was borrowed for a fairly good British TV comedy about a seriously incompetent bank manager: The Peter Principle (unimaginatively called "The Boss" in the US).

Re:The porn industry won't be such a big driver
Yes but in the late 70s and early 80s the performers were being hunted down and arrested for prostitution here in the US. I can't find a link that describes it but in Ron Jeremey's Biography they talked about the challenges to making porn there is a little bit mentioned here in his wiki entry.
I believe it was California v. Freeman that killed this method of persecution, opening the door up for what we have to enjoy or hate today. -
Enrico Palazzo?

Re:Any heat is good heat in winterhat is the use of "some sort of loft insulation" and double glazing when window frames are of aluminium (an excellent thermal conductor).
I'm reminded of Gas in The Full Monty complaining about his ex-wife's new husband and his "bloody double-glazed windows." He seemed to regard them as a status symbol instead of a practical insulator.

Who would want you?Funny to see this article so soon after viewing Final, a movie about a man who wakes up in a mental ward after being cryogenically frozen and then finds himself a ward of the state in more than one way. Or the Philip K. Dick story I just read about a man who travels into the future, but isn't worried about making his way, because he is a doctor, and society can always use a doctor, right?
Seriously, if the technology worked as planned, what would you do after being thawed? Go back to grade school to catch up on the basics? Would any of your skills be useful to anyone? Unless you were a popular historical icon, who would want to bother with you? An archeologist or historian?
Add to all of this the fact that the population of Earth is already expanding at an alarming rate.

Re:Smells like the same old snake oil...
John Cleese did a short documentary called "Wine for the confused." Towards the end of it he buys 5 bottles of wine ranging in price from $5 US to several hundred. He puts them in brown paper bags with laters ([A-E])and has 20 odd people try them all (some movie star friends/etc, generally people who supposedly drink a lot of expensive wine). He then asks "which wine did you think was the most expensive one" to which the various people say A, B, D, E, John Cleese then says "I'm not hearing a lot of "C." Turns out that no-one thought the most expensive wine was the best one, in fact several thought the $5 bottle was the best. The moral of the story: wine, like food and coloirs is a matter of individual taste and price often has little bearing on what we truly enjoy. Personally I can't stand Beaujolais, I've tried a few and found every single one utterly repulsive.

Re:Really? How so?
Here's some evidence. Disney has been stealing from the Public Domain ever since it was founded (not by making the movie itself, but by subsequently claiming copyright on the original story).

Not the first time.There are two Discworld books;
Wyrd Sisters and Soul Music
that have already been made into (animated) films. They were pretty good!
However, as with many book-film conversions, but especially in Discworld's case, this reader's opinion is that nothing quite beats the imagination!*vote for Jingo*
