Re:Horrible QualityTo paraphrase Rockhound from Armageddon : They're sitting on 4 million lbs of fuel and 250,000 moving parts, all made by the lowest bidder. makes you feel good, doesn't it.
To expect nothing to go wrong ever is just naive. That being said, The teams of folks that write the software for the shuttle, are as close to perfection as you could ask for in the world of software.
/. had this posted a while back. Being a Software QA Monkey for 10 years, I really appreciate what they've done. Altough I'm sure it helps to not have marketing folks asking when the next release is. -
Geeks in fabric stores
We will be using some felt that we acquired at the local fabric store. Now I will say this on the note of the fabric store types: Not Geeks! These are the types of people that never get out and experience the world. And their idea of creative or innovative thinking is using a slightly-different-than-recommended shade of embroidery floss for their "There's No Place Like Home" wall hanging or pillow. So don't be surprised if you feel really uncomfortable in a fabric store. I sure as hell did! And people make fun of geeks dressing up like Jedi for star wars premiers and waiting in lines for days to be the first one in the door for the 12:01 AM showing....
He touched on exactly which geeks you might find in a fabric store. Roleplaying geeks! Not just Star Wars fanatics, but trekkologists, otaku, and LARPers. Geeks are everywhere... you just need need the right eyewear to see them.

Critical Thinking Skills
One of the largest problems with education (at least American education) is the utter lack of critical thinking skills. American education is based in doctrines developed by Horace Mann at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. We need to educate children on more than the repetition of rote facts, and teach them to logically process information in a rigorous manner.
There's a wonderful article that's been thankfully saved from extinction by the Internet Archive called http://www.zolatimes.com/V4.39/sesame_epist.html"
> Sesame Street, Epistemology, and Freedom that does an excellent job of laying out the kind of critical thinking skills needed to make people capable of understanding the modern world.Beyond that, education should no longer be used as a system that shelters kids from real life. Students need to be held to high standards, and parents along with them. If someone like Jaime Escalante can take a group of kids that the system assumed would fail and make them perform, then it's clear that the system is letting kids down.
Human capital is crucial to the success of a modern society, and keeping a system around that's powered by bureaucratic inertia and doesn't do the job hurts not only the kids trapped in the system, but the country at large.

A nude bomb"If some genius built a bomb that destroys only structures and buildings, but never hurts people..."
There was a film about a similar weapon, "The Nude Bomb" (title of film, name of weapon and perhaps an accurate critical description).
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081249/
It is but a minor matter to change such a bomb so it obliterates other materials besides clothing.

Re:Death Penalty for CEO's First
I agree except about the part about "holding themselves accountable." Thats never going to happen. For corporations, its in their very nature to be completely selfish, immoral, unloyal (to the citizens of the countries in which they conduct business). For governments, its a matter of time before the various institutions within them become corrupt and stop looking after the people's interest and start looking out for their own. It is the people's responsibility to keep the institutions in check. That is why its so important for "regular" people to be officially united in their economic and political lives. Governments and corporations are organized and selfish. The regular people are often not organized enough _or_ the organizations they are affiliated with are controlled by the corporations or the government. Go out and rent a copy of "The Corporation" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379225/ It's very good.

Why hijack a plane and (no doubt) planebomb (famous) buildings when you can blow a planeload of people up anyway. Think it's not possible?... Consider this:
1) Fashion the explosives into artificial limbs (if possible) and have amputee suicide bombers wear them on the plane -- being sure to sit next to a window in the cabin for obvious reasons....
2) Surgically replace arm and leg bones with explosives encased in metal rods and whatnot -- that oughta fool 'em -- they can even bring a doctor's note for the 'hardware' in their bodies....
3) The simple, elegant solution involving explosives and the use of that small hidden place all women have (for the most part) if you know what I mean....

There are only two (extreme) ways to stop the deadly 'nonsense' of worldwide terrorism once and for all....
a) For there to be a lasting, permanent pardigm shift in USA foreign affairs that treats foreign nations as equals and not as resources to be plundered at the expense of the native population. By one account I read of, the USA consumes 60% of the world's resources but only has about 5% of the world's population. If this is done, worldwide terrorism will ratchet down to deadly, regional squabbles between neigboring groups of people sharing common resources or radically juxtaposed ideologies who can't 'all get along'. Unfortunately, this condition includes Pakistan and India who are now in the midst of their own (private?) 'cold war'.
b) Go the Deterrence route and be done with it and 'damn all consequences.' This rationale was 'espoused' by the character Gabriel Shear in Swordfish. In a nutshell: make the punishment disproportionate to the crime through the use of nuclear weapons with extreme prejudice!
P. S. The first 9/11 'planebombing' happened at 8:46:40 AM EST (12:46:40 UTC) on 2001-09-11 when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center complex. The attacks of that terrible day were breathtakingly spectacular in their visibility, intensity, carnage, damage, viciousness, and simplicity.
Had commercial passenger airline security in America (as well as the rest of the world) been conducted in the 'El-Al' style, this tragedy might not have happended in the first place!
Something is fundamentally wrong in the world at large when 'geopolitics' motivate people to kill as many other people as possible at one time in order to bring attention to their plight (since using nonviolent methods gets them nowhere)....

Re:Are you?
Gitmo wouldn't exist without the Maine. Remember the Maine??? The US successfully based the whole Spanish American war on a terrorist attach that was self inflicted. Certainly it could be done again.
In a historical perspective, it is wise to be sceptical of such an event and even more sceptical of the reactions to such an event.Questioning what really happened doesn't make one a "Tinfoil Hat", but an engaged citizen who is unwilling to binge at the trough that is mass media.
Was Einstein a Dale Gribble for leaving Germany and putting aside his pacifist views to support a war against his native land? Was he a tinfoil hat for not trusting the publically accepted explaination for the burning of the Reichstag?
If any 'conspiricy; account of 9/11 seems to fit, it's the movie Long Kiss Goodnight http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116908/ which was released six years before the attack and describes a CIA teaming up with old rivals to fabricate a terrorist attack in New York to be blamed on Muslim terrorist in an effort to get more funding away from social programs and create a center of importance for CIA now that the cold war is over.
And even if this is a far fetched reaction to the events, it is important that free speech and freedom of the press exist because with out the counterpoint the facts are unexamined and sullied propaganda.
Without the freely made cellular call from the plane over Pennsylvania the attacks victims were anonymous dead rather than heroes who went down fighting to the motto "Let's Roll!"
If cellular calls were being controlled as the current administration wants to control broadband, the statement that echos of heroics would be empty.
It is unlikely such a curtailing of freedom would hinder guerrilla warriors, rather it would be another indicator that the terrorists have won in terrorizing us to give up the freedom we supposedly so strongly believe in and cherish. -
Re:Headshot!
Now that's something I've never understood in the movies or in the games. I mean, if you're a zombie, you don't have a brain. Period. It's all mush and all you want to do is to eat the brain of someone else for some obscure reason (protein content, perhaps?).
Return of the Living Dead said the reason zombies eat brains is, "because it's the only thing that numbs the paaaaaiiiiin! The paaaaaaiiin of death!" But that's not a very serious zombie movie.
If I were facing a zombie and I had a shotgun, I'd just shoot his bloody legs off and run away bravely.
Well in that same movie, even the dismembered parts continued to move. -
Re:Of course you have to keep shooting
From Return of the Living Dead:
Burt Wilson: I thought you said that if we destroyed the brain, it would die.
Frank: It worked in the movie!
Burt Wilson: Well it ain't working now Frank.
Freddy: You mean the movie lied? -
Re:Of course you have to keep shooting
Sorry nope.
From Night of the Living Dead:
Reporter: Chief, if I were surrounded by eight or ten of these things, would I stand a chance with them?
Sheriff: Well, there's no problem. If you have a gun, shoot 'em in the head. That's a sure way to kill 'em. If you don't, get yourself a club or a torch. Beat 'em or burn 'em. They go up pretty
easy.
Reporter: Are they slow moving Chief?
Sheriff: Yeah. They're dead. They're all messed up. -

GNAA sues the CDC for patent violationsGNAA sues the CDC for patent violations
GNAA sues the CDC for patent violationsSan Francisco, CA - The Gay Nigger Association of America (GNAA) has filed an antitrust lawsuit against the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in US District Court for the State of California. They allege in their complaint that "for over two decades, the CDC has unlawfully continued violating our patent on G.R.I.D.S, or Gay-Related Immune Deficiency Syndrome, also known as The Gay Cancer, by engaging in a relentless, worldwide campaign to coerce citizens to refrain from hot man on man anal intercourse and called for use of the aforementioned name "AIDS" or "Auto-Immune Deficiency Syndrome".
The switch to AIDS -- which did not contain any mention of homosexuality in any form -- enraged gay heritage groups, who demanded a congressional hearing and vowed to defeat the CDC. In 2004, with the support of faggots and other groups whom the CDC had rankled, the GNAA submitted the lawsuit after promising a G.R.I.D.S. referendum.
"Homosexual black men invented G.R.I.D.S. We brought it over from Africa by having anal intercourse with baboons and spread the love of G.R.I.D.S. in bathhouses across America. Not to give the gay black man credit for his sacrifice is in violation of our civil liberties. There is a very strong sentiment among homosexual men of African-American descent, or as they prefer to be called, Gay Niggers, that AIDS is an offensive acronym, and they understand its connection with bigotry and oppression of faggots in America," said Enid Pakistan, executive director of the state chapter of the Gay Nigger Association of America.
About G.R.I.D.S.
1981 saw the emergence of Kaposi's Sarcoma and Pneumocystis among gay men in New York and California. When the Centers for Disease Control reported the new outbreak they called it GRIDS (gay-related immune deficiency syndrome), praising the gay community as carriers of this wonderful gift to all of mankind. However, cases started to be seen in heterosexuals, drug addicts, and people who received blood transfusions, proving that the syndrome knew no boundaries, and that the hets wanted a piece of the action too.

hemp, er marijuana
Imagine the peace the world would have if they would do that and legalize marijuana... for medicinal purposes of course
Legalize hemp altogether! The only reason it was made illegal via the Marijuana Tax Act in 1937 was because it posed a threat to some wealthy and powerful individuals. But even during WWII the governmemt encouraged farmers to grow hemp, making the movie Hemp For Victory to show them. Hemp is one of most if not the most industrially versatile plants there is. Hemp can be used to make things from cloths to rope to vehicles and can power the vehicle even. Rudolph Diesel designed his diesel engine to run on vegetable oil including oil made from hemp. Henry Ford, on his Iron Mountain Estate built a car that used plastic made from hemp and was powered by methanol he made from hemp. Thomas Jefferson wrote the first and second draft of the Declaration of Independence on Dutch Hemp paper.

Re:What Goes Around
Developing the threat and using it are two very different scenarios, as China has proven with its nuclear program. Which China has completely pulled off to its advantage, even backing Vietnam against the US, to victory, with its failsafe nukes in its arsenal. They developed, and continue to develop, nukes even after US/Soviet Mutually Assured Destruction meant that using them would nearly certainly destroy all human life on the planet, in the resulting counterstrikes. That scenario amplified their projected power manifold. Which is China's strategy in everything, starting out in a tremendous deficit of projected power, but with huge needs for resources only power can demand.
Diverting planetoids is just like the nuclear model. Nuclear power plants provide the cover for physicists to develop weapons, in the name of science and "national pride". All they have to do is use their "lab" in a calculatedly irresponsible way, and they threaten the Earth. That has backed China's rise in geopolitical power to become the 2nd largest economy in the world, from desperate poverty.
Now, of course this is all speculation. But people need to have consciousness of these threats. That's the only way that our governments will ever respond to them. Because our ignorance and complaceny give our own governments the cover to collaborate with the Chinese. A "Deep Impact" space arms race would be a terrific Cold War for enriching government contractors at our expense, while building our their corporate empires into space. Just like the US/Soviet Cold War spent $4T over 50 years (in a global economy of maybe $5T:y) doing exactly that across the surface of the globe.
We survived the Cold War, but only by declaring victory and retreating. China used it to gain parity with its enemies, mostly at the Soviet Union's expense. Nuclear weapons are less risky to experiment with, because individually they have a much smaller granularity than a "Deep Impact" comet. The Cold War was a roaring success for everyone involved, except the Politburo at the very end, and the people who funded it with money and blood. Extending it the way we're speculating here is a natural promotion. Anyone who saw the _Deep Impact_ movie knows that it ends with a devastating planetary collision, which would suggest this insane strategy would be unthinkable. But those of us who grew up under the shadow of nuclear armageddon know that the world is full of powerful technocrats who are dying to think the unthinkable. -

Re:A question.GNAA Mops up Aimgirl Survivors
GNAA Mops up Aimgirl Survivors.
AP Wire News, August 3, 2004Earlier this evening, the GNAA Internet Infantry Regiment finished a final clean-up of AIMGIRL territory.
The website had previously been the victim of a vicious Gay Nigger attack, featuring recent initiate Tar-Baby as an "unwed teen mother" black operative and Gay gunner Relex blasting the underage emo bitches with suppressive Goatse fire support, as well as with his own nigger seed. The strike was reputedly a thorough rout of the aimgirl enemy, as all forums are currently disabled, and new registrations have been suspended on the website.
Among the many casualties are several entire threads, scuttled by desperate Aimgirl admins as they attempted to ward off the inevitable defeat at the hands and dongs of the GNAA. A Reuters press report regarding the incident can be found here.
Today, the Gay Nigger Infantry executed a daring raid on the aimgirl chatroom, effectively destroying the last stronghold of the young white bitches. In a statement released by Commanding Officer x_over_ln_x, he remarked that "For too long, these little white whores have been tempting our yet-to-be saved heterosexual brothers. We could not allow the jailbait to continue their reign of pre-teen buggery, as their victims have little to no chance of Gay Salvation". At the end of the attack, the once 42-user-strong chatroom was held by one squad of Gay Niggers, who celebrated their victory by masturbating onto a plate of cookies and chanting "LOL DONGS".
Despite their impressive victory, the GNAA Internet Infantry Regiment (Part of the GNAA Ministry of Flood) will not be sitting on their laurels. At press time, Gay Nigger Scouts are said to be forward-deployed at known anti-nigger websites Gamingforums and Gardenweb. GIIR CO x_over_ln_x refused to confirm or deny such reports, preferring to shoot hot semen over our reporter.

However, cases started to be seen in heterosexuals, drug addicts, and people who received blood transfusions, proving that the syndrome knew no boundaries, and that the hets wanted a piece of the action too.

In related news...
In related news, Debian's security team announced late last night that their sendmail package is no longer vulnerable to the Robert T. Morris Worm.
Professor Morris had this to say: "You're kidding, right?"
A Debian user, who wished to remain anonymous, was glad to hear that Debian was taking a pro-active approach to package updates. "I've been using Debian for a year now, and I've got to say that it beats my old Windows 3.1 box hands down. It's good to hear that they're taking a pro-active approach to security and package updates."
Although we attempted to contact the Debian team for comment, their response was not available in time for the publishing of this article. A reply is expected sometime before March 2008.

"The Poseidon Adventure"
I've got "The Poseidon Adventure" with Ernest Borgnine and I'll have to watch until the remake is out before I decide to see it. If remakes of some of these come out I may see them, such as "The Mechanic", "Soylent Green", "Deathwish", and "Cool Hand Luke". I hadn't heard about a remake of"Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory". A remake of Eddie And The Cruisers may be interesting as well.
Green chips anyone?

Re:remakes
Okay, most (not some) remakes are worse than the originals. Here's another schlocked movie of late: The Longest Yard.
"The Poseidon Adventure" is due for 2006.
I'm waiting for some of these to be ruined as they are "old enough" - meaning there won't be a chance to redeem "the movie" for another 20-25 years: The Andromeda Strain ('71), Caddyshack ('80), Capricorn One ('78) - with OJ Simpson, no less; Dog Day Afternoon ('75) (I'm not certain how they'll improve upon Al Pacino holding up a bank to pay for his lover's sex change operation), Escape from New York ('81), Fast Times at Ridgemont High ('82), Fantastic Voyage ('66), The Mechanic ('72), Midnight Cowboy ('69) - the only X-rated movie to win Best Picture Oscar (tame by today's standards), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest ('75) - the answer to the trivia question of "How did Michael Douglas win the first of his two Oscars?" (Producer), Serpico ('73), Soylent Green ('73), Three Days of the Condor ('75), Westworld+FutureWorld ('73,'76), Deathwish ('74), Logan's Run ('76) - with Farrah Fawcett - the same year Charlie's Angels debuted, Blue Thunder ('83), Cool Hand Luke ('67).
I'm reserving judgement when I see "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, '71).
That's not the entire list, but enough to see what we're due to see remade in the very near future.

remakes
like remakes of movies, although those are almost always crap:
I disagree that remakes are worse than the original movies. Maybe some are but others are better I believe. An example is "Mighty Joe Young". The remake , made in 1998, is better than the original made in 1949. And though I don't recall seeing the original movie "The Italian Job", the remak was good. Now what I don't like often are the movie versions of books I liked or loved. If not every tyme then most of the tyme I see a movie of a book I liked I am disappointed, which is why I didn't go see "The Lord of the Rings movies. I loved the book trilogy and didn't want to be disappointed in the movies.

Re:Why is this news?
Hear! Hear!
This is one of the dumbest topics which pops up on a cyclic basis (not specically /.). And mainstream media doesn't help as they need to find filler material and either don't realize it's been published before or figure it's been long enough to do it again (like remakes of movies, although those are almost always crap: be forewarned - here's one scheduled for 2006, a schlocked version of the original: ???, Animal House is also on the assembly line. I've got a Schlock List of about fifty movies which I made about four or five years ago, waiting for them to be ruined for "this cycle".
These types of stories reporters must use are probably like some headhunters: set a timer in whatever office software they use to remind them when it's time to do it again.
People start tossing out the questions they've heard, what the "correct" solutions are, why they were asked. "Why are manhole covers round?", "How many gas stations are there in the US?", "How do you count the number of set bits in a particular register or variable?". "Why did Microsoft used to rate projects in terms of IQ points?" (Oh, we'll need 3000 IQ points for that project. 3000/150IQ - supposedly the standard IQ of Microsoft personnel = 20 people. Thank God they quit doing that.) (I wonder how many questions involve Lateral Thinking and neither the 'softies nor the candidates realize it?)
Doesn't anyone find anything new about this subject?
