Re:Is that how much 99,800 yen is worth these days
No, but 720 dollars is how much 79,800 yen is these days.
Apparently, you missed this sign. Perfectly understandable, I would've been drooling over the machine(and those models) had I been there. -
What I found the other day
I had a rant about it the other day. I found lights, toothbrushes, heat blankets and hot drinks cups.
Unfortunately the heatblankets link is now broken -

Some things I have come across....
For those of you who might have burned your penis on your laptop, cool it down!
If you are a mobile traveler like me, it's one less thing to pack when your toothbrush is USB powered!
Or while you are brushing your teeth, you can find time to make some noodles or whatever the hell this thing does.
And one last one to make soup with I guess. -
A USB Toothbrush
An electric USB toothbrush JPG

I've Seen A FewI've seen a few, most of them links to images on Akiba. Here are what I can think of off the top of my head:
- Coffee Warmer (mentioned)
- Electric Toothbrush (for when you need to brush your teeth on the plane during long flights?)
- Electric blanket, in 2 patterns! (incase you aren't running a fast enough processor to keep your room warm)
- I'll post more if I can remember 'em

Re:What about a USB 2.0 Drive tower?
At this place you can buy what looks like a USB2 to 4 IDE controller adapter. What you don't see at the manufacturer's site is that this board fits into a standard ATX power case, takes standard ATX power supply, so you can easily make a cool 4 200 or 300 or whatever HDD external case. As you can see Here, that board being mounted into a case, where you can hook up the hdds, using the case's power supply, etc. Too bad its USB2, and too bad each IDE controller only supports one device, otherwise this would make for a killer 8-device controller...

Other Sony products that use Linux
Here some other Linux based Sony products (which they call Cocoon).
Sony's Linux initiative seems to be based on broadband content delivery.
CSV-E77 is basically the older version of currently discussed machine. It offers PVR capabilities on 320GB storage(on two 160GB drives), but is only around $500
NDR-XR1 is also a standard PVR, but it comes with built in DVD burner for backing up the videos you took.
CSV-P500 is what Sony calls a "Channel Server" it's a standard PVR, but it comes with an interesting feature where you can call home and program your PVR via a telephone line.
NAV-E900 is an interenet enabled home sound system, it allows you to download content from online and play them on your system. Also it can communicate with NetMD. It will also rip all your CDs for you and store on it's internal 160GB Harddrive so you don't have to put it in again. You can view all your stored content through a menu driven interface that is outputed to your TV.

Re:just an ARM core in their ASIC
I stand corrected. I an really disappointed. At least they had the decensy to put a reasonable Gfx processor. Unfortunately the CPU shares the on chip RAM with the video.pic. They could have done something real good with this and built a "real" low power machine reather than just another arm imbedded SoC.
-
Re:just an ARM core in their ASIC
The Sony Handheld Engine has an ARM 926 core. It has to be ARM, because Palm OS 5 doesn't run on anything else.

Re:Easy to implement around.
You could make a system that didn't violate it by only displaying one video item at a time in a page style instead of list style, or by displaying a multiple item list but change the entire list on a button press instead of scrolling one at a time, which is arguably more useful anyway.
This interface trick is used on the upcomming PSX according to the mpegs on this page (though it is not clear whether the inerface deals with local or networked content).

why didnt they use this
the gscube? sounds like what they wanted, plus a ton smaller. see it here

Re:PSP UMD vs. GameCube Mini-DVD
introduce ANOTHER disc format?! how about OPEN formats for starters?! i don't see any other systems using their format
i betcha that the mini-dvd format for GC is closed AND protected by matsushita... yah, it's a COINCIDENCE that the ONLY other maker of GC is them... the combo DVD player, Game Player Q system geez, i wonder why?!
do we see some parallels here?!
sony --> beta --> UMD
matsushita/panasonic --> vhs --> gc-dvd
it's natural in this area to make a new format...
side note: these pictures were sourced from watch impress japan the first few hours of Sony's E3 announcement. The rest of the story is here. The story's in japanese but slides are english. lots more specs there.
now, why am i not surprised psp insider already got scooped... -

The design is of course not at nice as with ipod, but still quite nice compared to archos. The screen is by far better than the one on ipod and is larger than the one on archos. I would go for this gadget because of the big screen and the overall design. -

New DVD-R PS2
That would go very well with this. Although I`m sure Sony pictures wouldn`t approve.

Calm down there..
"I dont think this fits into the 'Digital Hub' or the 'Year of the Notebook' shtick they have been preaching."
Well, for a start, when it was announced music was one of the integral parts of the 'Digital Hub', and it only makes sense to make money off the content as well as the hardware its played on (whilst complicated, it is working for Sony).
Secondly, I didn't think at keynotes you have to announce every stratergy you are working on, especially the secret ones which might not pan out. Cut them a bit of slack
:)"Hey lets waste a ton of money while were barely profitable to buy into an industry that everyone _knows_ is dying..."
From the LA Times article - "People close to Jobs say he is convinced that the music industry is about to turn a corner in the copyright war." That "vision thing" is why Steve has tonnes of money, contacts and a private jet, whilst working for two kickass companies, again, cut him a bit of slack...

finally no more waste of time
but you really should use this, otherwise it makes no sense!

The link seems to be slashdotted. Here's a link to another site with images of the unit. It's in Japanese, but the pictures speak for themselves.

Re:Works for my toothbrush, why not?
Oh, we all know that
/.'ers never leave the computer anyway... so why not just use a USB toothbrush instead? -
Reasonable Limits Aren't
Why would you need IPv6?
What, you can't envision a day when you have more net-enabled devices in your home than can be handled by IPv4?
I don't want to have each room require its own NAT just because someone felt they had to come up with a net-enabled version of the USB toothbrush. -
additional info
a quick google search led me to this page http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2002/0327/kaig

More information on the device
Is seems they plan on distrubuting content through kiosks and the internet, as well as selling smartcards with content already on it.
They plan on selling music, videos, comics, e-books, and photographs.
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20030204/ am3_13.htm
The product's price seems resonable at 2800yen ($28.46US) for the device. The 32MB Smartcard will be 2,000yen ($16.75), and individual content will cost 200yen ($1.68).
Another interesting thing is that since Palm uses Arm7 processors and SDs that content will probably be compatible with Palm devices at a later date.
