Re:Thought you'd "rip me apart" like you said?
Does your product even filter spam? How? When a virus is delivered via email, your tool does nothing. When an IP link is clicked, your tool does nothing. Against a 419er's solicitations, your tool does nothing. When faced with a fresh malware link, your db may be up to 12h out of date and lack an entry for it.
You claim your product is accurate. Prove it. Spamassassin is free and open, you can look at the source. Its efficacy is demonstrated daily. There are plenty of third party reports over the last 10+ years demonstrating its utility. SA has millions of users and hundreds (at least) of contributers. How about your tool?
You claim your product is fast. Perhaps it is leaner than Spamassassin (with SA's Bayesian filters and regular expressions, as you note, it almost certainly is), but Spamassassin runs on servers. It consumes zero disk, zero memory, and zero CPU on user systems.
I put my Spamassassin developer status on my resume. Sure, I'm not the sole dev of SA, but that's a feature. I can work on (and lead) a team. If I go away, the project will continue without me. Do you put APK Hosts File Engine on your resume? Whatever would people think when they search for it?
... oh, never mind, a quick search yields your full name attached to these shenanigans anyway. How then could my Fortune 100 employer hire you into any team?Oh, and so you know it's "me" to the same level of clarity as I have for you,

Re:the more things change...
You're right, pulled out of bad ram. It was from an old article, misremembered years ago. In 1982, Apple II and IBM PC/Compatibles had equivalent market share, but they weren't 50/50.
-
Re:You ran from this before, lol... apk
tl;dr - But from the length I assume you disagree.
Do you think you got played on the third Google search result?

Check the market share
Even in the US, the Apple II seemed to have occupied the same niche as Britain's BBC Micro - a "respectable" computer for the slightly-to-very wealthy, and agencies like schools answerable to the political elite.
Nope. Apple II computers were in pretty much every school you cared to walk into during the 1980s at least in the US. In fact we still had Apple II computers in schools well into the 1990s. As a result Apple was often the first choice (budget permitting) of computer for people at home along for middle class (and up) families along with the cheaper C64. The IBM PC and clones were the dominant force from about 1984-5 onward along with the Mac to a much lesser extent. By 1988 the Apple II and C64 were in low single digit market share.
The computers that built the revolution were the Commodore 64, Atari X[LE], the Sinclair Spectrum, et al. Those were the machines you'd find if you skydived into a random neighborhood and broke into the first house you saw. Those were the computers we used.
Aside from the C64 the market share numbers say otherwise. The Sinclair, and Atari computers barely made a dent and never got above 5% market share combined. The Apple II got up to between 10-15% market share and stayed there until about 1985 when the Mac was introduced.
I'm not dissing Jobs here but I think Apple's contribution to the revolution is severely overrated.
No, it probably isn't. Many of the things you take for granted these days were really made mainstream by Apple. (note I didn't say invented, just made mainstream) That's not to diminish the contributions of others, Apple certainly didn't do it all themselves by any means. But Apple played a key role in the way things actually played out. I'd say that the contributions of others might be underrated but I can't really say that Apple's contributions are overrated.
But it's also obvious that without Apple, the revolution would have happened anyway.
Yes it would have. And it would have been different. But that does not diminish the role that Apple played in what actually did happen.

Re:At first I thought the Judge was biased
TRS-80 was probably the first single company with significant market share. Atari briefly rose to challenge them, along with Apple. Then Commodore and the PC dominated growth until the PC finally dominated everything else in the early 80s.
There's some data here.
-
Re:Visicalc changed everything
The Apple II was dominant in terms of income, if not sales units. If you're referring to Jeremy Reimer's article you'll read that in 1980 Apple's turnover was $200 million, Radio Shacks was $175 million and Commodore's was $40 million. It might not have sold as many individual units but they made Apple a lot more money.
Sales figures for the PET weren't kept, but it is interesting that in 1982 Commodore sold more Vic 20s in 6 months than Apple sold Apple IIs in 5 years.
Figures are here: http://jeremyreimer.com/postman/node/329

Re:How about Outlook/Outlook Express?
WTF ? who's this APK troll ?
My Dearest Peter, a.k.a. Alexander Peter Kowalski, is a well known spammer and troll, banned from multiple websites. He has some sort of multiple personalities disorder and brags and barks a lot but has no teeth to bite. Don't worry, just ignore him as everyone else around does (and as someone said before in this thread "do not summon him"). You can also play with it, it's a bit funny at the beginning but you'll quickly get tired of it although it's an unbreakable toy.
Also note that he's unable to prove any of the achievements he claims because he's unable to prove his identity nor is he able to understand the concept of identity. He also will threaten to sue you but never will and will tell you that your place is in a kitchen if you're an unfortunate member of the female class. He admitted (more like claimed) being raped multiple time by his ex-girlfriend and of abducting at least one of them, probably the same.
As you noted, he's unable to admit that he's made an error. Making errors happens to everyone and most people are willing to admit it and learn from it. He simply can't.
He's also keeping records of all his upmods on slashdot but of none of his downmods (too many of these), thinks that there is a Great Conspiracy against Him and will keep answering as long as you post a line after him. You can try it for yourself: just post "Hi Peter, I love you" after each of his post and he will answer about a 1000 lines of gibberish. every. single. time.
Sometimes his mental algorithm enters a loop and sometimes there is a callback function called that makes a new poster appear and write single-line posts trying to act as if it's not him. You get it, I think it's actually a bot, a very good one at that. I'm writing a paper for a special issue of JEPG about him. A very interesting case.
He has no PhD of any sort and seems to have developed an inferiority complex about it, he's no security expert but keeps acting and posing as one, there is a long list of childish manners in the way he behaves and he has an illegible writing style, as you've probably noted.
...
Profit !

Re:Is this news to anyone?
Just so I'm clear. Are you saying that the mid to late 90s IT technology boom would have happened regardless of Microsoft and within that time frame (if not earlier)? I'm not so convinced. Just look at the historical sales chart below in the following URL.
http://jeremyreimer.com/postman/node/329
Also, the Atari ST, Amiga, C64, TRS-80 all started to take a massive nose-dive ranging from the mid-80s to early-90s period. The PC clone platform dominated by Microsoft kept on growing market share however. Just look at the parabola in growth. Simply unmatched in the industry!

APK 24/7
It may be that the reason for APK's existence is to serve as a warning to others.
Ever done anything bad, completely unintentionally? Alexander Peter Kowalski fits the bill. He's the author of a tool, apkapp2backgrounddaemonprocessengine, considered malware by a large number of anti-malware companies and organizations. He probably wrote it in good faith, but the reality is that it's a product that can be used easily and effectively to hide spyware on a computer. So many anti-malware organizations have flagged it as majorly dangerous.
CA
PestPatrol
SpywareDB ("Dangerous!")
Freedom Anti-Spyware
Spycheck (Spanish-language) - "Recomendacion: DESACTIVAR Y ELIMINAR"
Spyware No-More ("Threat risk: High risk", "Advice: Remove This is a very high risk threat and should be removed immediately as to prevent harm to your computer and / or to protect your privacy")To add insult to injury, Kowalski doesn't handle criticism maturely. See here for an example of Kowalski going about dealing with negative material on the Internets in entirely the wrong way.
So if you read material by APK, just remember that while he apparently has a lot of degrees in computer something or other, he's not terribly smart when it comes to the whole forward thinking thing.

Re:No you can't "grasp" it
Come on. 2000 was never particularly widely used. Only in business environments. The driver support was lacking for too much consumer-level hardware, for one thing. And of course, as you pointed out, games are important to mainstream acceptance, and 2000 didn't have the support from games companies. NT was even less mainstream. XP was the first mainstream NT derivative.
Anyway. I was interested in whether or not you were actually a career troll, or if it was just this one article you were posting on and you were having a bad week or something. So, I looked for you via google. It seems that you're pretty much a career troll. At least, it looks to me like just about everyone, just about everywhere you post thinks so. You can call this an Ad Hominem attack if you want, but an Ad Hominem attack isn't always a logical fallacy. When it bears on your character and your actual ability to engage in rational debate it's perfectly valid. An example would be someone who insists that the moon landings were faked because rocketry is impossible and refuses to even look at the mountain of evidence that thousands of rockets have been launched or to look through a telescope at the artificial satellites. In such a case, calling the person crazy might technically be an Ad Hominem attack, but it's not a logical fallacy.
So, anyway, some great links related to you:
This one about a situation where you threatened to sue over a piece of software of yours being identified as malware. It seems to me you could have worked with them to resolve the issue amicably, but you couldn't help yourself. This insane thread that you posted to for years. My favorite quote from it is: "Great Scott! APK's numerous and highly repetitious responses read like examples from a freshman textbook on logical fallacy and deceptive rhetoric." I think that poster had you pegged perfectly.
This exchange which was absolutely hilarious. That one really was worth a LOL!
This has a list of some of your ars technica posts. You seem to have been hated there right from the start for good reason. The fact that you seem to have believed that C++ was dying, but that Delphi was the future is hilarious. It's also really funny when you post under a different alias pretending to be some random person supporting you. It's so blatantly obvious that it's you, even when you use a handle like Cybordeath. I'm a bit disturbed by some of the racism, homophobia and misogyny in some of your posts, by the way. Your temper seems to have calmed a bit over the years. Your fundamental troll nature seems to be coming through even more as you age, however.
So, basically, you're a very well known troll, which is an accomplishment, I suppose. Getting sucked into long flame wars with you doesn't seem wise, and it looks like any discussion with you pretty much has to turn into a flame war.

Re:Killer App
2 years of glory, and even then Apple only managed 6% of the market share.
Incorrect. Visicalc came to its own in 1983. Assuming by "2 years" you mean 1983 through 1985, and you average Apple's market share during those years, (8.54+15.82+11.9)/3 = 12% market share. Reference: http://jeremyreimer.com/postman/node/329

Re:All three remaining fans
I don't know where you're getting your numbers, but according to Jeremy Reimer's research, the Amiga didn't sell all that well. They sold about 4 million computers between 1985 and 1995, about 1/5 the number of Macs sold. At its peak year in 1991, Amiga sold half as many units as Macs.

Another sample... these are dated 2001. I mean really. If a person goes a whole 10 years like this and everyone seems to respond to him in the same way, what sane person can believe that he's not the problem and that the rest of the world just wants to attack him for no good reason. This is just a person who will never look at himself as the source of his own problems.
"erroneus" spelled in this way is a kind of loop. Also, it was taken from an error message reported by old IRC server software after a user attempted to change his nick to something that is not allowed -- "erroneus nick change." Oh yeah, I go way back.
What I find amazing is that he replied to my same comment numerous times and then replied to his own replies numerous times. His replies are hilariously like elementary school tactics rather like calling someone "chicken" or in his case "...ran away!" As people go, APK is quite a piece of work and completely genuine I'm convinced. He's literally stuck in a kind of loop somehow. Tracking just what he does on Slashdot alone is quite impressive. He has to track individual targets all over the place checking and rechecking comments and threads to keep his fire burning. And it's not just here. It's other places too. This is probably the most angry and obsessive person I have ever witnessed. I am completely convinced that he's over-the-top mentally ill.

Re:Amiga
The Amiga was released in 1985, and was indeed the dominant GUI of the 80s. We only need to look at mac sales -vs- amiga sales; the amiga sold more units.
I don't know where you're getting your figures, but going by Jeremy Reimer's research, the Amiga didn't approach Mac sales in any single year, let alone cumulative sales. Even if you omit the Mac's head start in 1984 (372,000 units) they still sold almost twice as many units as the Amiga.
I know you're an Amiga fan, but I don't see how you can justify calling it the "dominant GUI of the '80s."
-
Re:Amiga
http://jeremyreimer.com/totalshare5.gif
Dominant? Hardly.
The C64 had almost 50% market share and the Amiga was very even with the Macintosh until the early 90's.
The world was Commodore's oyster. They became misguided in the late 80's and really screwed it up by the early 90's, well after the GUI boat had sailed. -
Re:It's hard to believe...
1) Netscape came pre-installed by some (most?) OEMs at that time. I don't have numbers on this but it was hard to find a computer that didn't have it.
By 1996, Microsoft was specifically targetting Netscape by both releasing a free web browser, Internet Explorer, but also engaging in specific OEM requirements that minimally required IE to remain on the desktop and possibly included either excluding Netscape's icon on the desktop or Netscape's install completely (it's unclear to what extent it was).
2) Netscape was out first; a lot of people were settled into using Netscape before there even really was an IE. Netscape started with the dominant market position.
While Netscape started in the lead, PC sales skyrocketed in the 90s. Put simply, if all the computers in '96 were sold with just Netscape and all the computers in '99 were sold with just IE and all the computers were still running in '99, then IE would have about a 66% market share in '99 inherently. The numbers in the previous link aren't quite like that, in part because computers take time to be sold, Netscape users apparently clung on for quite a while, and obviously not all computers had just one web browser installed (some percentage downloaded a browser or installed from a CD).
3) While Netscape for a while was superior, later versions of Netscape were terrible -- as in, not as good as the previous versions of Netscape. Eventually even people who hated IE of that era (including me) started using it just because they were so damn tired of how buggy Netscape had become.
While I don't doubt that had something to do with it, people only started switching to Firefox when it was clearly superior in some ways (extensions) to IE. Ie, to get people to d/l the browser or cause OEMs to fight MS to keep Netscape would have required for Netscape to be significantly better in some property. As much as Netscape 4.x could be called terrible, I don't think it would have been enough even if Netscape 4.x was merely as good as IE4.
I don't deny that Microsoft had a big and unfairly used advantage in having the dominant operating system, but in the grand scheme of things, that amounts to Microsoft trying to slip Netscape roofies while Netscape was busy firing a shotgun at itself as fast as it could.
I think you're overstating your case a bit. IE4 was hardly bug free. But, it was already there and good enough. Why bother fighting with Netscape at all unless it's clearly superior? Certainly, until Mozilla was open source and started caring about standards compliance there really wasn't any ideological reason to be pro-Netscape either. Really, if there were any shotgun blasts that were fired, it was from Microsoft failing to making IE secure enough from attack for such a long period, Firefox was able to gain some traction for those worried about (if nothing else) the homogenous security risk.

Re:Tu Quoque on your part now?
First of all: You DEFINITELY tried to imply it.
Nope.
Secondly: What EXACTLY were you implying?
What I said. Is it so hard to read what I actually said? In fact, I clarified it in the very next sentence from the one you quoted:
Since we both know it's not, you should realize that you must do more than show that vulnerabilities are easier to find. You must also show that there are just as many vulnerabilities as there are in proprietary software.
You didn't.
I came in here demonstrating WITH VERIFIABLE FACTS FROM A REPUTABLE SOURCE (in secunia.com security vulnerabilities data) that LINUX 2.6x, the "latest/greatest" from LINUX has more KNOWN security vulnerabilities...
Fixed that for you.
There's also quality over quantity -- the number of remote vs local exploits. You need a remote exploit first, before the local exploit matters.
I also submit & HAD YOU ADMIT TO IT NO LESS, that "Open SORES" code has a disadvantage
Yet you refuse to admit the corresponding advantage.
you asked for proofs of where I have been shown in publications of respected & some notoriety in this art & science of computing, & I told you who you could write in that regards AND how to research them...
You did not answer whether those people would be willing to review this particular Slashdot post -- and would you really want me to waste their time with that? That's the problem with being anonymous. It wouldn't be enough for them to say that APK did this, they'd have to confirm that this is APK.
You seem to have a remarkably bad track record for proving you are who you say you are.

Re:A working Amiga
Was the Amiga really that rare in the United States?
Yes, however their owners are very vocal. The "Apple" phenomenon was vastly multiplied in the case of the Amiga user, who was convinced it was the "most amazing computer in the world" and never failed to let everyone know about it in online communities (BBS, GEnie, CIS). However the most generous sales estimates have a total number of 3.8-4.8 million Amiga owners worldwide. A drop in the bucket compared to PC's. In fact the best Amiga ever did was garner just over 5% market share one year, in 1991. However it was usually never more than 3% of the market.
I'm not criticizing the machine (Amiga owners tend to be a bit fanatical and I would hate to receive death threats). It had some extremely innovative features for its time, including a decent sound chip when PC's still went "beep". But the PC's main features as always were expandability and compatibility - both of hardware and software. You were guaranteed that your stuff would work if you had a decent XT/AT clone.

If this is the level of skill you bring to software
Decide for yourself...

Don’t worry; they’re only screenshots. You needn’t let an APKware install anywhere near your computer (and I wouldn’t recommend it, unless it’s a virtual machine).

Re:I would like proof of that also clone54321
The sock-puppetry is pretty lame, but it gives me the opportunity to rub in that you cannot libel an anonymous poster
:-)Plus the whole "I'm talking to my lawyers" bit is funny.
Plus, there's in this thread
P.S.=> Whatever the case may be, my attorney's being forwarded this information just so you are aware of that as well. He is on retainer each year, & I get my money's worth from him each year for said retainer... he is advising me to advise you of this, & also what this is about, etc. apk
Two quick points for APK for the next time you try to make it sound like you have some legal beagle eagle scout at hand:
- Retainers don't do what you seem to think they do. It's not like paying admission to an "all-you-can-eat" - you still are charged for each billable hour against the retainer;
- No lawyer would be "advising me to advise you of this, & also what this is about, etc." - he'd tell you to shut your pie-hole before you dig yourself a new rectum on your own.
A real winner on "Lets Sue Teh Innert00bs", for sure. Then again, anyone who thinks that a hosts file is anything but minor protection from threats is probably posting from a r00ted computer - oh wait - that's the "400 hz I has 2 viruses a month computer wunderkind" - I'd really like to see a video of someone posting to
/. with those 300 baud acoustic couplers (I think they went as low as 120 baud). -
Re:I would like proof of that also clone54321
Still waiting for you to explain how someone can be defamed if they're anonymous.
BTW - if you're defending the total moron who posted this:
P.S.=> Whatever the case may be, my attorney's being forwarded this information just so you are aware of that as well. He is on retainer each year, & I get my money's worth from him each year for said retainer... he is advising me to advise you of this, & also what this is about, etc. apk
... it's such low-grade poop I wouldn't even call it B.S. ... more like gnat droppings. So tell us the REAL story. Did you sell your Ritalin to another kid in school? Or is the lithium not working again?
