Re:where did the ice and snow go?
I'm sure those glaciers that receded from the southern US really left a lot of water. Also, places like Arizona really could use more water - especially since they are forced to give it all to those thirsty SJWs in California.

Re:Read the report.
Really? Then maybe you'd like to explain to the class what "gender inequality" has to do with climate change? Because to me it sounds like more of Crazy Eyes Cortez "Green New Deal" horseshit where they shoehorned an assload of their ultra left racist sexist ideology into environmentalism because nobody has been willing to buy their race and gender bullshit on its own.
Because if they actually gave a rat's as about climate change they wouldn't be screaming about shit like a "pink tax" but would instead tell women they can't have any pink at all because plastic things made of pink cost more power to produce and thus are worse for the environment...funny I have never heard any of them bring that up, have you? And don't even get me started on their racist shit, because we've all seen where that road leads, hell we saw it last week when they turned a condemnation of a congresswoman using anti-semitic buzzwords to try to blame everything on "Da Joos" into a mealy mouthed "racism is bad, mmkay?" because her skin tone and religion makes her higher on the food chain than Jews under the Oppression Olympics and thus she can be as racist as fuck to anyone lower on the scale without worry from the left.

Re:Welcome
> but now it makes me wonder what happened to humanity.
That's easy:
/Oblg.Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory> someone disagrees with you, it's because they are obviously stupid and desire your ridicule and vitriol
Yeah, that's the typical Ad hominem fallacy. Shoot the messenger and ignore the message. Mainstream media is partially to blame for this with trivializing complex issues, sensationalism, and sound bites.
> There no longer seems to be intelligent debate or even discussions on the likes of FB or Twitter in the same way you had it in the old days of Usenet and other public internet forums.
That's cult thinking. Us vs Them. Aren't interested in finding a common middle ground. The Fallacy of Duality happens in politics, religion, etc. "I'm right, therefore your wrong." instead of a more enlightened perspective: "Maybe I'm *part* right, Maybe you're *part* right" -- but that takes humility to admit one doesn't have all the answers, and that everyone's POV is only a partial perspective.
It also doesn't help that critical thinking isn't taught in school.
Society has devolved into a majority/popularity contest If you don't kowtow the popular opinion you are wrong, "just because."
Every social group has its biases. e.g.
/. in the early 2000's used to be heavy Pro-Linux Anti-MS. In 2019 we see way more MS fanboi's making excuses for MS's spyware and lack of respect for its customers. We see the same bullshit with "hate speech." People are no longer interested in learning. They would rather censor a different opinion. Because if we are forced to have a healthy dialog about opposing opinions we might learn a) our POV in incomplete, or b) worse, we were wrong.
False Ego is a helluva thing to overcome.

That's about where Zuckerbook is, now, they're hardly even trying to hide the fact that they're spying on everyone and want to do it more.
What's next, Zuckerbook? Convincing people they should put their sex lives and bathroom visits on Facebook, too? Facebook ankle monitors? -

I had to read the text below the image, and then look again, to see an elephant.
Btw, in case you are wondering what kind of chair I mean, it’s this kind of comfy chair (of which, unfortunately I only know this way of finding it. I’m terribly sorry).

Re:Capitalism and private industry victorious
I was reading an interview earlier this year with one of the top execs at Ariane about why - despite SpaceX showing that it's not only doable, but looks to be a big cost saver - that they're not doing so. And he responded something along the lines of, "if I do that, we'll only make a few rockets per year, and what am I supposed to do with all of my workforce then?"
Obvious reaction to that statement...
Of course, it's a fundamental problem for heavily-government-backed (some would say "propped up") rocketry companies: their backing is contingent on them being effective jobs programmes in the regions that their backers represent. They need to be burdened with high labour costs in order to be supported.

Wow just like an SJW, instead of arguing over facts, like which party gets the most political donations from Hollywood or Disney you just go "Herp derp you must be an IST! so I can just throw names and not actually debate any facts, which of course are NEVAR on my side, herpa de derp!"
Well sadly there is really only one answer to a drooling cursing regressive, here ya go..

Re:oh yeah, i always celebreate when...
I can appreciate your concern, since the recent history with Skype and some other acquisitions left a bit of a bad taste, but this article from ArsTechnica suggests that Microsoft might have been the best option:
I understand that, but in the 90's Windows 3.1 was considered "the best option" for an operating system. Fortunately a lot of people didn't consider it an adequate option and chose not to settle.
The Microsoft of today is not the same Microsoft as in the days of Ballmer and Gates.
There are a few running memes over the history of Microsoft. One I never not tired of is someone popping up to assure the world that today's Microsoft is not same Microsoft that did all the bad things that earned them their unpleasant reputation. I don't pay enough attention to know if they are the same people who stick up for Microsoft when it's been discovered that they've added some new underhanded practice to their repertoire.
In many ways pigs are flying.

You provided a list of misquotes that have been debunked countless time.

That's your problem, I did read your posts in all their glory.
Show the schools the good ware and they'll reconsider. Also who is the system administrator at home?
Same oh-so-generic complaints that could apply to any platform. Yawn.
I thought Apple was so high and everything works mighty that system administrators aren't needed.
If the school buys a printer with Windows-only drivers or doesn't know how to configure the Wi-Fi settings, that's Apple's fault because they should work on Jobs Fairy Dust alone. Or something.
Yeah? Did you write entire reports in it?
You just being willfully obtuse now? Aside from the Google Docs that you dismissed out of hand, there's also Word, Pages, and innumerable other text/document editors.
The entire app ecosystem from both Google and Apple is sheer and utter rubbish for education completely littered with apps so incredibly special purpose that they are completely useless beyond acting as a learning guide for whatever textbook students are reading from.
Same oh-so-generic complaints that could apply to any platform. Bigger yawn.

India also vows...
to end porn...drug use...and well uhm. Stuff.
Good thing they had picked a worthy pursuit we can all get behind! Seems ending poverty is nothing anyone (with money) cares about.
Bitcoin settlements can be delivered by carrier pigeon, more code or encoded in text/email. -Stopping bitcoin is harder than stopping porn.
I refer to The Simpsons -> http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/i... (Old man yells at Cloud)
Before anyone can stop bitcoin they'll need to at first understand what bitcoin is. Considering some of these entrenched knee-jerk politicians are still coming to grips with DNS & VPN I'd worry in about 20 years...
BTW, BTC will likely touch sub $3k - good time to buy. -You're welcome! -

This is definitely a Slashdot thread. We're talking about the prescription opioid epidemic but the history of Ford Fiesta sales in the US do not go unnoticed. You should start those comments with "ackchyually" though to really drive the point home.

Re:When people talk about innate value
Gold has 'innate' value because gold is in and of itself valuable.
Yes, and no. There's the value we think it should have, based on all the fairy tales we've heard as kids, and then there's what someone's willing to pay for it right now. If you've got a use for that gold, such as you want to impress your honey or your boss, then you might pay up for it. If you're starving on a desert island, you'd probably much rather have something to eat.
Example: you're walking home at night and a shifty-looking guy approaches you and offers you a pure gold chain for a "fair price". You take one look into the vacuum of his eyes and run the hell away. The effective worth of that gold chain? Zero; Mr. Shifty got nothing that night, and the value stays at zero for as long as he can't find someone to buy it off him. Hell, he may pay someone to take it off him once he gets sick of trying... then his gold has a negative value.
Get it?
Gold is believed to have value because i) since the old days, super-powerful people wanted it to adorn themselves and their houses with it, to show off how rich and powerful they were; and ii) today, it has rather unique and useful chemical properties. But if all rich people decide the look of gold is gaudy and trashy, gold will be harder to sell and the price will go down, and if another element comes along that accomplishes what gold does in technology, people will care about gold even less and the price will fall even further.
And finally, if Canada Geese all start shitting gold nuggets out their asses as they walk across the street, gold will be just that much more shit that has to get cleaned up and dumped into a landfill.
Get it?
Supply and demand. Supply can be measured, whereas demand is at-best an educated guess. It's hard to imagine a world that doesn't value gold, sure. But gold won't satisfy your hunger, won't satisfy your thirst, won't heal you when you're sick, won't fuel your chainsaw. Hungry people will choose Twinkies over gold nuggets in every case. Can't smoke it when you need a nicotine fix, not much good for weaponry or armor (too soft). and ultimately, when the wasteland cometh, gold will be utterly worthless; gasoline and ammunition will be the stuff to die and kill for.

Cost/Benefit analysis, politics-style
I've been very lucky boss-wise, and only worked for one manager/group of managers in my career that bothered me enough to quit. However, I have many co-workers who have "escaped" from toxic environments run by terrible bosses. Some weren't exactly low-paying jobs either -- think investment banks, elite law firms, and consulting companies. Almost every one has told me that leaving and taking a pay cut was better than dreading going to work every day and dealing with their bosses screaming at them, throwing them to the wolves, or just being a total jerk. Say what you will about Bannon, but I think he's just making a rational decision and answering questions like "Can I control this guy? Is he hurting my long term aspirations? Is the access and influence I have and future untold billions I will have because of it balanced with the probability of everything going sideways?" The problem is always cost/benefit - I know some people who've worked in investment banking as devs or very high-end IT pros, and they say the bonuses are massive and salaries are great, but you have to deal with a company that's basically 100% bro-culture assholes every day in exchange for it.
My dislike of the current administration mostly stems from its apparently inability to control its emotions. I think Trump is not used to being questioned on _anything_ and people in his inner circle have given him a pass on his behavior forever because they want to keep getting paid. I obviously don't know what he's thinking, but I think he feels that international conflicts and political compromise is just like strong-arming some union boss on one of his construction sites or bribing some city official to get one of his properties expedited through the system.
One of my favorite political cartoons of late (sorry about the ) came out when Trump started signing his first executive orders and shows him sitting on Bannon's lap saying, "I'm a big boy!" I think that it's pretty obvious that no one can control him at this point, so we'll see what happens.

Water Bears [Re:How overly cautious are th
I wonder why they only mentioned Tardigrades ("water bears")? There's plenty of bacteria that's even more durable in space, and there's probably far more of their spores on the probe than Tardigrades.
Tardigrades get attention because they are durable multi-cellular animals rather than single cells, and thus a bit "more like us". But single-celled organisms like bacteria still hold the durability records because they have fewer parts to "break" from radiation and temperature extremes.
It would be a hoot, though, if human explorers visit Saturn in the future to find giant scary water bears, like manatees with teeth. "Damn you, Cassini!"
