Re:For How Long?
"I'm a big Linux user..."
Yeah, like most geeks, you're thirty pounds or more overweight from all the Jolt and chips, your complexion is pasty, you sweat a lot when you talk to girls and you still live in your parent's basement. -
I Already Hate Apple
I already hate apple, a lot. But then I live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and attend NYU, so the sea of tight-jeans-wearing hipsters who think it's somehow artistically relevant to be Apple fanboys gets overwhelming fast. It was actually summed up especially well already: the biggest problem with macs is the douche factor.

Re:Too mundane, not flashy and pointless enough
well, heh, it reminded me of a maxim I once heard: "Those who do not understand Unix are doomed to reinvent it--badly."
Well color me surprised. I didn't think Maxim really dabbled that much with tech stuff... -

My Point is Linux is everywhere, You'd be hard pressed to find a neihborhood that doesn't have 60% of the homes in it containing at least one linux based device. Tivo, Router, Spa, Cellphone, PDA, NAS, and that number is constantly growing. True most consumers don't know they use linux every day, from the webservers they visit to the phone they use, and that is a good thing. I don't care if there ever comes a day when "the Year of the Linux Desktop" happens because that year came for me 5 yrs ago.
My daughter has never known a Windows desktop, and she is perfectly happy.
Me, I still cringe when I have to load up the VM XP I use for testing windows builds of my software. (/rocking in shower, Still not clean, Still not clean.)
Now if you will excuse me, I have to browse the web on my Nokia 770, connected wirelessly through my Lynksys Router to check the prices on a new Dell Ubuntu laptop.

Nice try. But it's bogus...nothing but a couple of image files ( http://www.maximonline.com/maximusa/maxim_logo.jpg and http://www.maximonline.com/maximusa/maximcover.png ) overlaid over the map coordinates using Google Earth's Image Overlay feature. It's all clearly visible in the .kml placemarks file. If you bring up the placemark and uncheck the two overlays in "Places" you'll see nothing but dirt at those coordinates. -

Old news, they already ripped off 'Aliens'Check out the Advanced Hybrid Electric Drive (AHED) military vehicle and see how the US military was inspired by the armored troop carrier from Aliens.
They know it too. From an article on new war machines in the Jan, 06 Maxim Magazine:The most conspicuous feature of the AHED is its uncanny resemblance to the troop transport in the movie Aliens. When I mention the likeness to the engineers, they reluctantly agree and quickly change the subject.
So would it be infringement if I made a movie or designed a truck that resembled the Aliens vehicle; but not if the military does it? -
Re:different rules for porn watchers
Uh... isn't Maxim basically soft porn?
Maxim would be mild erotica. When the pussy makes it's appearance is where soft porn begins. Even then I would classify that as mild erotica. -

Re:not sure....

What about Maxim?
Is Maxim Magazine porn? I personally think it is. (defined: "Sexually explicit pictures, writing, or other material whose primary purpose is to cause sexual arousal.") Should Maxim have a plastic cover just because I think it's porn? Should we force Maxim Online to
.xxx? Most of TV fits that definition too -- www.fox.xxx has a nice ring to it. (It really does. They should buy it just because.)
I'm serious here. I'm not just playing the devil's advocate. I honestly believe Maxim is porn. I know there are lots of people who disagree with me, notably the people who subscribe to or work for Maxim. I just don't see why my point of view, or anyone else's, has any business being enshrined in the law or forced upon others. -
Re:CHA CHING!
If you actually paid any attention, particularly to other threads in this discussion, you'd notice that parts of the film are narrated using Adams's words, as is clear in this clip of the "whale" scene:

Re:G4 on SLASHDOT?all of us loved TTV
All? Loved? Both very strong words that may be overdoing it a bit. While I enjoyed TSS when Leo and Kate started it, it never was a truly geek show as another poster mentioned. Kevin (bit player then co-host) was the token "uber" geek and you had to wonder how much was knowledge vs showmanship. The show went downhill rapidly after Leo left. Leo now has a popular radio show. Kevin is off doing his own thing mostly. Patrick is doing occasional articles and recently started a blog. Morgan Webb has her own blog too, of course.

Re:Quality?Deadlines focus the development effort. Without the need to ever finish anything, you'll never finish anything because there's *always* something you can add or improve.
Milestones keep the development on track, and deadlines are used in projectplanning to determine an end state for the development project.
Besides all this, lots'o'time doesn't give you quality, necessarily. Look at knowledgable modern artists; all the time in the world, and all they produce is a pile of crap.

Well, if you're going to watch Dubya's speeches I strongly suggest you brush up on your English-to-Dubya translation. Try following this link to test your luck with his Spelling Be. It will embetter your chances of figuring out what he's talking about. -

Maxim!
I have only subscribed to one magazine ever... Maxim . The first time I picked up Maxim I said to myself, "what a joke." I didn't realize just how right I was! I have subscribed most of the way through college and it continues now. The stack on the shelf behind the toilet is chock full of great articles, beautiful women, and some of the best "toys" that you could find. I wish I could afford all the goodies they list.
The best part of Maxim is that my gf enjoys reading it as well and doesn't complain about the half-naked hotties that dot its pages.
It's inexpensive (generally under $17.00/year), it's funny, it's well put together, the articles are worth reading, and the women are plentiful and gorgeous. The only thing that I wish it had that it does not are the 1000+ line BASIC programs for me to type in that Byte used to. Now *THAT* was HOT! :)
No, I don't work for Maxim but I wish I did. -
This exists already
"What if you received a magazine that only had stories and ads that you were interested in and pertained to you?"
It's called Maxim. -
Mags?
Until they start publishing Maxim magazine online, I don't care.

...and statistics
But I feel obliged to politely point out that we're still earning (on average) only 92 cents on the dollar compared to men.
Well, would you expect to be paid more than the next employee, if you worked an average of 10 hours more per week, 400 per year, had 25% more job experience and put in 90% of the overtime hours? How about if you were over nine times as likely to be seriously hurt or injured on the job? Feminists complain about how the "glass ceiling" keeps them from the highest paying jobs (a myth), but you don't see too many demanding to be landfill divers (second one down).
And if anyone says women don't earn as much as men in high-tech fields because we're not as good
No, men get paid more because they work more. If women were really paid that much less for the same work, why don't companies fire all their male employees, replace them with women and drive their compeditors out of business? A couple of nice editorials on the subject, here and here.
I will personally punch them in the face.
Ah, another of my favorite double standards. Violence against women by men is a cultural taboo in this country right up there with priests having sex with little boys, but female violence against men is no big deal, deserved, or even funny. I'm not saying you have that attitude, I'm just talking about how gender violence is perceived today.
Finally, one more reason why guys make more than women: because we don't have any choice if we want to date you. Money is the easiest sign of success, and women want their men to be successful. I'm not accusing the entire female gender of gold digging; its not about money. Its just that the man has to be more successful in his profession than the woman is in hers. How many senior, female bank managers marry guys who are full time bus drivers? -
that's too complicate - this origami is easier

Re:Number 6
Much more interesting (and IMHO appealing) pictures in this month's Maxim Online. See her pictoral . She and the rest of the cast seemed excited and pumped in the SciFi channel's one-hour behind the scenes show

Spoiler ahead! In the upcoming episode of Enterprise, Captain Archer and Trip use PHP to reconfigure the ship's computer to stream hot hidden camera footage of T'pol to the captain's ready room.
The beautiful power of PHP never fails to impress me.

Surely some mistake?
The game got a 5 star rating from Maxim AND got its own publicity stunt in the form of TakeLaraToWorkDay.com!!!
Well, that will teach me never to trust Maxim - or publicity stunts.
Seriously though, isn't the whole tomb raider think sharkjumpular by now? Sure, it was novel to have a female protagonist and explore ruins, but we've had enough of each over the last few years, and the TR games didn't get any better. -

Re:There's only one question...

Re:enterprise PC
That's nothing... Archer (the Captain) actually said the word "breast"! And that after having a (wet?) dream about his science officer. Y'know, after watching the episode where we see Hoshi topless (well, not really) again, it seems to me that maybe the creators are trying to break away from the PC image. Which is good; the number of potentially good shows goes up as the amount of "allowed content" increases.

Re:Lets be honest here
In a recent Maxim test they actually did this to test the speed at which the P2P programs would work best.
iMesh won w/19 mins for the Weezer album.
Kazaa was rated with two stars.
Limewire was rated the best and took 27 mins to download the album.
check it out here -
T'pol and Archer????
The growing sexual tension between T'Pal [sic] and the Archer is kind of interesting, though often overdone.
I think you must mean Trip (Commander Charles Tucker III) the Chief Engineer. I can't recall more than one or two scenes all season where there was any sexual tension between Captain Archer and T'pol. The infamous decontamination scene was between T'pol and Trip, for example.

Two solutions
The most extreme, fun way is to use pyrometric cones - just wait for these cones to droop and move the joystick, and you'll find out the temperature! Here's how to use the cones when upgrading the wiring of your computer.
A much more practical way is to use the Dallas Semiconductor (now bought by Maxim, and not the magazine)
Dallas has a demo application you can use as an example - a weather station and some good application note examples. It uses the DS1820 or the DS18S20 and you can get up to 2 free samples of each. This device is digital, so no calibration is needed for the accuracy you need. They have a lot of other temperature sensors; some even have alarm outputs, so once you program it, reading only one bit will tell you if the temperature is out of limits. It has a well-written and complete datasheet. They've got software for win32, linux, beos, java, and 8051. If you write your own software or modifiy theirs, you don't really need a serial port adapter; just a wire on the parallel port will do (and it will power the device, too!!)
If anyone's interested, I can dig up some c-code that I used - it works with the parallel port under dos. -

Re:Does it have to stay on the ground?
Staying on the ground is the trick to this contest. It is easy (and a lot of fun) to make any 2-liter bottle shoot up in the air with water and an air compressor. The engineering challenge of this contest is to get all the water to shoot sideways with out letting the propellant (air) to escape unused.
BTW if you have never made a 2L rocket I highly recommend it. But...I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS!
