Statistics from my slashdotted siteI get these statistics from the slashdotting of my site:
Operating Systems:
My explanation of the statistics:
67% Windows (45.6% WinXP, 14.4% Win2000, 2.6% Win98, 1.8% Win2003, 1.3% WinNT, 0.6% WinME, 0.2% Win95)
21% GNU/Linux
6% Macintosh (5.6% MacOS-X, 0.4% MacOS old)
1% FreeBSD
0.5% Sun Solaris
0.00001% AIX (wh00t!!)
0.00000001% NetBSD
Web Browsers:
44% Mozilla Firefox (39.3% Firefox 1.0, 2.2% Firefox 0.10.1, 0.8% Firefox 0.9.3, 0.4% Firefox 0.8)
33% Microsoft Internet Explorer (30.2% ie6, 1.4% ie5.5, 0.6% ie5)
9% Mozilla (Suite)
3.5% Safari
1.7% Konqueror (I use this)
1.7% Opera
1.4% Netscape (0.3% Netscape 7.1, 0.3% Netscape 4.0, 0.2% Netscape 7.2,
0.9% Galeon
0.4% Camino
0.2% MultiZilla
0.2% K-Meleon
0.1% Links (textbrowser)
0.00001% Lotus Notes web client (wh00t!!)
0.000001% Lynx (textbrowser)Slashdotters mainly use Windows and GNU/Linux. Some of them use a Mac. There are small percentages of slashdotters who use FreeBSD and Solaris. Very few brave adventurous slashdotters run IBM AIX and NetBSD.
and BTW my site slashdotted, so better use a cache service to see it:
Windows slashdotters use primarily the WinXP version, but also Win2000. Some of them still use the good old Win98. Some brave slashdotters use Win2003.
Slashdotters primarily use the Firefox Web browser, but some of them still use MSIE. Some slashdotters prefer Mozilla and few of them run Safari and Konqueror. Few brave slashdotters use textbrowsers or even Lotus Notes as a web browser. There are still slashdotters who run Netscape 4, and some Firefox slashdotters who haven't upgraded to 1.0.
It is interesting to note that not all Mac-loving slashdotters (6%) use Safari (3.5%).

Cool, but I see there are caveats,,,
I think it's cool, but there are significant caveats acknowledged in the linked story not mentioned in the article above.
The Nano-ITX motherboard used is not commercially avalible - and it will not be avalible for general sale for some months yet. The author points outs that even using this yet-to-be released motherboard, there was no room for a CD/DVD drive. It also does not feature a built in modem or a 'Firewire' port (but I don't think that's a big deal). It doesn't appear to feature WiFi or Bluetooth either, but there certainly seems room to fit them easily.
It features a 1 Ghz Via C3 CPU (and either a Via or S3 graphics card), so performance could be a problem if you wish to use this as a 'home entertainment' device (or well, pretty much anything other than a low traffic headless sever or simple web browsing/email device IMO, YMMV).
On the plus side it appears to have S-Video, Composite and VGA output (no DVI, but a lot more useful to most people I'd think), additional input and output audio interfaces and two SODIMM slots (which I think is better than than the single DIMM on the Mac Mini, but again YMMV). -

Re:MirrorDot link
how hard was an actual non-mangled clickable link?. Kind of a pity mirrordot is
/.ed too -
Re:MirrorDot link
Slashcode automatically adds spaces to long strings to prevent them from being useful in any way. Here's a clickable link. There's some bug on sourceforge about this, but I'm sure it won't matter if anyone contributes to that, unless they actually include a patch (It's funny. Lots of griping, but no patches, for an open source product.)

Re:Stop michael now!
Does that mean you're the anonymous coward removing your mask now?
Sorry, I'm not the poster you're looking for :)
That'll teach me for taking a look at -1, but I was hoping for another mirror site, since the link was apparently already /.ed before the first mirror managed to get a copy. If someone wants to complain about the editors, it might be reasonable to suggest that they set up mirrors and include the links before they publish the URL of those wimpy little servers.
That's a reasonable idea, especially for the easily clobbered sites such as the above, the problem is that /. doesn't want to deal with the legal, and more importantly, bandwidth issues of mirroring, there's http://mirrordot.org/ (I haven't really used them but have seen them in comments) though from their front page I wonder if /. might have legal issues with them. I recall some trouble with http://alterslash.org/ along that grounds some time ago but they seem to have changed their page somewhat since then, they could also just link to the google cache (no images although).
The fact is they have to realize that posting links to small sites without warning just doesn't work for a site of this scale. Before they post these links they really should give the webmaster an advance notice, either to see if something can be arranged to allow for the extra traffic, or to abandon the story altogether. They've resisted advance warning in the past but considering that I cannot recall a single small server that had actual NEWS and not something that could be (and often is;) posted weeks or even months later waiting isn't an option (and gives them more choice on the slow news days). To the abandoning of the story I realize they don't want to drop a story on some cool site because of some wimpy server but the fact is that even if they go ahead and post there still no story on a cool site, just rambling with dead links! Links like this to small sites that die upon impact do nothing but frustrate readers looking for non-existant content and harm the people who run the actual site that was so cool in the first place. -
