NBA's TNT OT

Re:Online Sports Network
You can watch MLB, NHL, or NBA, if you don't mind paying for it.
I suspect that all of these sports have the same rules (which I know MLB has) that you cannot watch your local team live over the Internet...you must watch them on local TV (either OTA or the regional sports network).
Note that this means that if you live in Chicago and buy the MLB.tv package because you are a fan of the Cleveland Indians, you will not be able to watch over the Internet when Cleveland visits either Chicago team, or vice-versa. In some years, that would mean that out of 162 games, as many as 25 will not be available to you.

Re:Newsflash: No More Amateurs
I remember when this happened. The argument was that some countries raised athletes specifically to compete in the Olympics (like the USSR) who would if there was professional events would be considered professional by all means and measures but because the state sponsored them and kept them from competing professionally, they were considered amateur.
anyways, that was the Olympics they had the dream team basketball where the US took all the best players from the NBA teams and put them on the court together as the US Olympic team.
If you ask me, I would say that almost all of the Olympic games are meaningless after the 1936 Berlin games. But it is especially so today as it seems to be a means to inject trivial politics into our living rooms. I guess it is good that Jamaica qualified for the bobsleigh this year. They didn't make the cut the last two games.

Rhode Island Firehouse Gang
This system of play is real old, it goes back to Frank Keaney's "Firehouse Gang" system at Rhode Island State College (now URI) in the '30s and '40s. Basically it was the ultimate fast break, five guard-size players sprinting up court after each change of possession to wear out and demoralize larger opponents. They generally got open shots and a surprising number of rebounds, even at the defensive end, because the other team was back on their heels.
I read about it in a layman's guide to hoops (now out of print) written by Celtics' Hall of Fame coach Red Auerbach about 40 years ago. Auerbach said that the system was often wildly successful in Division II, but could be defended relatively easily by the more talented teams in Division I ball.

Revised
Last night's NBA semifinal game was not shown OTA.
$900 is still much more than an NBA League Pass...
Most sports now I think offers some way to get videos of the games outside cable systems.

Oh, wait, you mean the other raptors. Sorry. I usually watch them on a webcam. They're here now, and usually fledge later in the summer.

Geek friendliness doesn't preclude jock dominance
It just makes the jock-dominant culture more courteous and community minded.
Perfect example of this right here in PDX... the Rasheed Wallace, Bonzi Wells old-style Jail-Blazers is gone The "new" Brandon Roy-led "make-it-better" Portland Trail Blazers 2.0 is now the standard.
http://www.nba.com/blazers/makeitbetter/
Don't even try to pretend the Blazers won't own PDX for a long time into the future, but very public bad behavior isn't tolerated by the fans anymore. The fans have learned they can demand of their team players/staff a certain standard of behavior, and the team management made sure they brought in players who would positive community assets.

Re:No
This leads to a "tragedy of the commons", though, where athletes can no longer compete on their own merits without using (potentially harmful) performance enhancing drugs because everyone else is using them. I don't think we want to go down that road.
Who cares? Honestly. It's a bazillion dollar industry of children's games.
It's not like the status quo is egalitarian (the average NBA player is 6'7"). It's not like some sports aren't inherently dangerous (football, boxing). It's not like athletes decline competitive advantages that stunt their body's development (gymnastics, weightlifting).
Let them take drugs. -
Re:they need treatment...
Last Tuesday I went to a Sacramento Kings game. The Kings were ahead one run and my boyfriend left to use the restroom. As soon as I put his glove on (as a defense against the crapload of fouls they were hitting at us) the other team scored two runs. When he left again to get a beer, I again put on his glove and the other team got another run.
The Sacramento Kings are a basketball team. Why were they playing baseball at a basketball game? :) -
Re:Use a 'fan center' to isolate when grid power d
Two questions:
1) What is a "fan center"? Google gives an NBA web site as it's top result.
2) As already pointed out above, if you are putting power out on to the grid wouldn't the "fan center" be getting it's power from you when the grid is down?
I think the easiest thing a hobbyist can do is store his power for personal use. Charge batteries during the day and use them to power your (DC powered) lights at night. At some point you save enough on grid charges to pay for the equipment.
Making solar, wind, or hydro power a profit center is a bit more ambitious. -

Cut-Off Date *is* during college bowl game timeNot sure if anybody picked up on this (it is Slashdot...), but as far as "The transition date was chosen to not interfere with college football bowl games or basketball playoffs", Dec 31st is probably the worst time to do this.
- College bowl games (at least anything semi-major) are all between December 20 to January 4.
- College basketball playoffs aren't until March (you know, the part where everybody in the office makes brackets). Conference playoffs are in February.
- NBA playoffs don't start until late April.
IMHO, the best times for not stepping on the most sports-related toes is February, late June, or November. It just depends on who you want to piss off. February is right after the Super Bowl, before March Madness, but during the NBA regular season and NCAA conference tournaments. Late June is after the NBA Finals, but during MLB's season. November is after the World Series, but during the NFL, NBA, and NCAA football regular seasons.
There are only two days in the US where there are no pro sports games being played. The days before and after the MLB All-Star game. So some large corporate entity is going to have to have a dip in coverage, so I guess NCAA Football, the NBA, and the NFL were chosen for this one. -
Re:Stop
The fact that you would use the ONE Chinese person in the NBA as proof of the opposite is not only retarded, but should be clear evidence that your argument is based entirely on what is politically correct rather than "what is".
Apparently you aren't aware of the evidence either. While I do attempt to be non-offensive and non-judgmental, my argument isn't based on being "politically correct" it's based on actual knowledge. Okay, currently Yao Ming is an anomoly. Between him and Wang Zhizhi (I think he was last seen playing for the Miami Heat?), China is probably not as well represented in the NBA. (ooooo, now I'm up to TWO! Chinese players in the NBA!) But before I finish breaking up the myth that "black people are just naturally better at basketball," let me state two facts - 1. Basketball has been a popular sport in this country (the USA) for decades, but is only becoming relatively popular in China now. 2. Chinese players are not allowed to declare themselves eligable for the NBA draft until they turn 22. Both of these things can account for why there are fewer Chinese players in the NBA - although the talent pool is there, it's not accessible and the people are interested in other opportunities at this time.
To a lesser extent, the same holds true internationally as well. Given the number of international players is increasing in the NBA, I think you'll begin to see more and more of a parity of race in the NBA. I'd happily take an all-star team of Steve Nash, Yao Ming, Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, Paul Gasol, Peja Stoyackovic, Carlos Arroyo, Hedo Turkoglu and Vladimir Radmanovic. So stop already with the myth that black people are better at basketball, there are plenty of non-black people who are excellent too. -
Re:Objectivity?Going a step farther, I'd say that since we're talking about entertainment (games), objectivity is secondary to entertainment value, so why should we look to games to model a generic, objective view of the world?
Do game designers need to refute the idea that they are role models?

All that aside, Cuban is an idiot in the basketball world as well.
He paid this guy (the dallas goofball being scored on) more money than what the league's current Most Valuable Player wanted to stay in Dallas.

Read Mark Cuban's views on thisHe has shared his views on Microsoft's moves in his blog. Essentially, he is of the opinion that the dividend is good for shareholders, the stock buyback is good only for insiders.
Cuban has a very interesting blog, even more so for NBA fans. (For those who don't know, he's the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, an NBA team. He made his billions selling Broadcast.com to Yahoo! back in the dot com bubble.)

Open Source? More Like Openly RacistThe Open Source movement, otherwise known as 'Free Software', has been a topic of considerable debate on the Internet's most controversial site. The majority of this debate has centered around the technical merits of the software, with the esteemed editors argueing against adopting Linux by employing the full depth of their considerable intellects, and the other side hurling death threats and similar invective. This has allowed many who would not otherwise receive quality information about Open Source software to be made aware of many of its ramifications, but one issue has been left alone: The overt racism that is deeply embedded in the movement.
Allow me to explain.
Alan Cox; Richard Stallman; Bruce Perens; Wichert Akkerman; Miguel DeIcaza. What do you see in this list of names? Are there any African-Americans on it? Absolutely not, none of those names sound like one a self-respecting black person would have! No Maurice, no Luther, no Lil' Kim. There are many other lists such as this, you can see one here. Flip through each page, do you see anything other than white faces? Of course you don't, because Open Source and its adherents are ardent racists and they absolutely forbid access to the sacred 'kernel' by any person of color.
Lets look at another list, this time a compendium of the companies using Linux. Are there any black owned companies on that list? Nooooooo. How about these companies? They all have something to do with Open Source software, any of them owned by an African-American? No again. Here is an extensive collection of photographs from a LUG (Linux User Gathering) meeting, more can be viewed at that link. What is odd about these pictures, and every other photograph I have ever seen of a LUG meeting, is that there is not one single black person to be seen, and probably none for miles.
More racist overtones can be found by examining the language of Open Source. They often refer to 'white hat' hackers. These 'white hats' scurry about the Internet doing good, but illegal, acts for their fellow man. In stark contrast we find the 'black hat' hackers. They destroy the good works of others by breaking into systems, stealing data, and generally causing havoc. These two terms reflect the mindset of most Linux developers. White means good, black means bad. Anywhere there is black, there is uncontrollable destruction and lawlessness. Looking further we see black lists that inform other users of 'bad' hardware, Samba, an obvious play on the much hated Little Black Sambo book, Mandrake, which I won't explain except to say that the French are notorious racists. This type is linguistic discrimination is widespread throughout the Open Source culture, lampooned by many of its more popular sites.
It is also a fact that all Unix 'distros' contain a plethora of racist commands with not so hidden symbolism.
It can hardly be coincidence that the prime operating system of choice of the 'open source supremacists' - Linux, features commands which are poorly disguised racist acronyms. For example: 'awk' (All White Klan) , 'sed' (shoot nEgroes dead), 'ln' (lynch negroes), 'rpm' (raical purity mandatory), 'bash' (bring a slave home), 'ps' (persecute sambo), 'mount' (murder or unseat nubians today), 'fsck' (favored supreme Christian klan). I could go on and on about the latent racist symbolism in Linux, but I fear it would take weeks to enumerate every incidence.
Is there a single unix command out there that does not have some hidden racist connotation ? Suffice it to say that the racism pervades Linux like a particularly bad smell. Can you imagine the effect of running such a racist operating system on the impressionable mind ? I don't have to remind you that transmitting subliminal messages is banned in the USA, and yet here we have an operating system that appears to be one enormous submliminal ad for the Klan!
One of the few selling points of Open Source software is that it is available in many different languages. Browsing through the list I see that absolutely none are offered in Swahili, nor Ebonics. Obviously this is done to prevent black people from having access to the kernel. If it weren't for the fact that racism is so blatantly evil I would be impressed by the efforts these Open Sourcers have invested in keeping their little hobby lilly white. It even appears that they hate the Japanese, as some of these self proclaimed hackers defaced a web site with anti-Japanese slogans. Hell, these people even go all the way to Africa (South Africa mind you, better known as White Africa) and the pictures prove that they don't even get close to a black person.
Of course, presenting overwhelming evidence such as this is a bit unfair without some attempt to determine why these Open Sourcers are so racist. Much of the evidence I have collected indicates that their views are so deeply held that they are seldom questioned by the new recruits. This, coupled with the robot-like groupthink that dominates the culture allows the racist mindset to continue to permeate the ranks. Indeed, the Open Source version of a Klan rally, OSDN (known to the world as Open Source Developer's Network, known to insiders as Open Source Denies Negroes) nearly stands up and shouts its racist views on its demographics page. It doesn't mention the black man one single time. Obviously, anyone involved with Open Source doesn't need to be told that the demographic is entirely white, it is a given.
I have a sneaking suspicion as to why their beliefs are so closely held: they are all terrible athletes.
Really. Much like the tragedy at Columbine High School, where two geeks went on a rampage to get back at 'jocks', these adult geeks still bear the emotional scars inflicted upon them due to their lack of athletic ability during their teen years. As African-Americans are well known for their athletic skills, they are an obvious target for the Open Source geeks. As we all know, sports builds character, thus it follows that the lack of sports destroys character. These geeks, locked away in their rooms, munching on stale pizza and Fritos, engage in no character building activities. Further, they interact only with computers and never develop the level of social skill that allows normal people to handle relationships with persons of color.
Contrasted with the closed source, non-geeky software house Microsoft, Open Source has a long, long way to go.
Join me in my next article where I will lay bare the rampant anti-semitism in the Open Source community.

Re:Where does it say you have a right to privicy?
That's the great thing about the Constitution - it's always evolving, based on the decisions and judgements handed down by the Supreme Court.
Wrong! I couldn't disagree more. The liberalization of the Supreme Court and its re-interpretation of the Consitution of the United States have made this country a worse place, not a better place.
Although I can't find it at the moment, it seems like I once read (or heard?) Walter Williams discuss the folly of a "living" Constitution. Basically the problem is this: if the rules are malleable, the game doesn't work.
The Framers didn't intend us to have a country run by the rules of Calvinball, but thanks to your gleefully activist Supreme Court, that's what we've got.
Games people play are known for their unchanging rules that are known and understood by everyone. The Constitution was intended to be a "set in stone" framework for government, not a warm and fuzzy Silly Putty ruleset.
That doesn't mean that the Framers intended the Consistution to never change: they included provisions for incorporating amendments. To be constitutionally correct, if The People wanted a right to privacy added, then the amendment process would be utilized to add it. As it reads, there is no right to privacy in the Constitution of the United States.
The job of the courts is to apply law, not interpret it. A corollary of this is that Congress should not write vague and nebulous laws, but that's a seperate issue. Even in the presence of poorly written laws, the courts should only make use of the literal verbage; to stray from that standard to find "original intent" or whatever is a departure from their constitutional duties and is an invitiation to impeachment from Congress (see Article 3, Section 1: shall hold their offices during good behaviour).
