I remember when I was a kid, about the age this group were (15-18), there was a made for TV movie called "Rona Jaffe's Mazes and Monsters" in which a bunch of kids who play D&D become massively deluded by the deleterious (bullshit) effects of the RP, find a cave underground and start doing what we'd call live-action roleplaying today. They end up risking their lives on this delusion. The implication was a sort of Reefer Madness-esque demonization of the roleplaying genre. It was one of Tom Hanks' early movie appearances I believe.

Mind you, every time something bad happened to kids in that time frame, the media was all too willing to attribute it to the nasty effects of the demons of roleplaying as personified by D&D. The Christian Right was watching all of this gleefully, encouraging it when it could. Google for 'christian anti d&d' - there are just too many links to the anti-occult D&D bashing to pick a representative one.

In the interest of equal opportunity political bashing, Tipper Gore (and by extension Al) was a real jerk about all of this, advocating controls on roleplaying gaming materials. Very similar to her jerky attitude about censoring music while she was with the PMRC in the mid-80's. But that's another story for another time. A quick Tipper quote from her book, if you please.

"D&D] is based on occultic plots, images, and characters which players "become" as they play the game. According to Mrs. Pat Pulling, founder of the organization Bothered About Dungeons and Dragons, the game has been linked to nearly fifty teenage suicides and homicides. Pulling's own son killed himself in 1982 after becoming deeply involved in the game through his school's gifted students program. A fellow-player threatened him with a "death curse" and he killed himself in response."

In the generation before mine (I was born in 1969), there was a man named Fredric Wertham, a psychologist in New York, who was convinced that comic books were the evil that was plaguing America's youth. He published a book called "Seduction of the Innocent" to make his point. He testified in front of the US Senate in 1954 (the Subcommittee to Investigate Juvenile Delinquency, if you can believe it). A brief quote if you don't mind:

"They [comic books] arouse in children phantasies of sadistic joy in seeing other people punished over and over again while you yourself remain immune. We have called it the Superman complex." (and doesn't that sound familiar - substitute 'video games' for comic books?)

He was also the first to identify Robin, Batman's sidekick, as being ambiguously homosexual. "If Batman were in the State Department he would be dismissed." was his comment. Apparently the pulp comics were luring children into a homosexual lifestyle. As if. I'm assuming Saturday Night Live got the idea from this.

Dr. Wertham's effect was quite significant at the time, as was Tipper and her allies during the 80's. In the 1950's, Dr. Wertham nearly killed the comic industry, causing sales to plummet as parents took aggressive action to protect their children in light of the negative publicity. The "Comics Code" symbol was the direct result of Dr. Wertham's crusade.

Tipper Gore and the Christian Right actually managed through pressure to get the authors of D&D, TSR, to remove some or most (depending on your view) of the offensive material from the 2nd edition of D&D, particularly the demons and devils. Thus emasculated, the pen and paper game declined in popularity after that time (rougly 1986-87 if my memory serves), even unto the present

Ok, so now out-sourcing is causing all the information leaks, as opposed to the previous administration, who outright sold our secrets to competetor nations.

As for how the money trails tie together, it's amazing what information Google will find for you.

You say your squatter shack was a fine place to grow up? Would you be willing to force homeless people to live in it (In NYC during winter months, the police are empowered to remove homeless people from the streets and forcibly place them in shelters)? You can always get a free education if you are a self starter. Just go to Barnes and Noble and your set for a mere fraction of what the Uni charged you.

Of course, most of what you were charged was for the opportunity to point at a piece of paper and say to a potential employer and say "See! I really DO know my stuff!"

This past fall, I decided to go back to college at NYU under the auspices of the McGhee School which is a branch of the School of Professional and Continuing Studies. SCPS is meant to help adults who have to actually work for a living get back into the Uni system, but it also provides for non-credit classes.

The classes have all been pretty high caliber so far, with decent to excellent instructors. But, what I've found is that what you're getting is a mixed bag of credit and non-credit students who are all learning the same thing! Credit students are being popped at the regular NYU student rate of roughly $1000 PER CREDIT!!! SCPS non-credit students pay roughly $1,000 PER CLASS.

Rather than get an ulcer over this fact, I just tell myself that those letters NYU are gonna gleam pretty brightly on that (very expensive) piece of paper I'll have when I'm done. Will it gleam brightly enough to justify the expense? Guess I'll know once I'm roughly $100,000 smackaroos in the hole.

I just finished The Handmaid's Tale today and its such a great book. Think 1984 but instead of criticizing Stalinism its focuses more on a hypothetical western fundamentalist distopia.

Don't be fooled by reviews that make it sound like a feminist's book. This is great character writing, great world-building, and powerful political commentary. Do some web searches, this book deserves more attention than its already gotten since it was written in '85 I believe.

Them: Adventures with Extremists. This was the best thing I read all of last year. Writer/Reporter Jon Ronson makes a list of 10 or so people/groups labeled extremists and spends somes time with them in a neutral way as possible. Amazing eye-opening book on how people out there think and live and how it affects us all in the end.

Worth it just for the chapter on Ruby Ridge. It will bring you close to tears. Laugh at me now, but just read that chapter and then tell me how silly I sound.

Neither of these books are geeky/hacker but I think they intersect that demographic in interesting ways. Enjoy.

First off the whole "propiska" thing, is very old.
Stalin used them, for example. It offends a lot of people that some of those in power wish to continue this system. Here's another interesting link.
Second the thing to see is not Checkpoint Charlie, but the differences you can see in the city when you look in each direction. They're very noticible, even today. It's pretty easy to see which side had the worse end of the bargain and that they haven't yet caught up.

What a typical arts-student response. You don't know anything about this topic unless you've read THIS book. (The obvious implication being that, since I haven't read a book that you have, I don't know what I'm talking about.) What matters is ideas, not how many books you've read. If your ideas are worthwhile, you shouldn't need to pull that kind of crap. You should be able to restate the idea which you think is important. If you can't.......

So, it would seem that we need a peer-to-peer service that is built with the following attributes:

-completely anonymous users, file transfers, hosts, etc.
-reliable and stable structure
-decentralized topology
-efficient data management
-and complete deniability (I didn't host that file, or I didn't download that file, as member's cant control content on the network)

I think professorial technophobia may be relaxing a little, anyway. I took a couple years off to work and I've noticed a difference even between my freshman year and now - NYU has, in that time, implemented Blackboard, and many professors take advantage of it. It's not much more than simple templated course home pages and discussion boards, but it's somewhere to get handouts and assignments and discuss topics outside of class. It's easy for the faculty, and a lot of them use it.

In the past year, nearly all of my courses have had their own sites - either through Blackboard or set up independently by the professors themselves, on NYU servers or elsewhere. Approximately half of my professors are using PowerPoint presentations now, and most post lecture notes or make use of class mailing lists to varying degrees. It's not shockingly progressive, but it wasn't the case when I started school a few years ago.

Well, I for one could go for some single-string effects. Imagine setting up various delays for each string and playing with the textures offered. Imagine being able to put some crunchy distortion on EA and Overdrive with an echo for DGBE. Works for 12 bar blues.

The real problem I see here is hubs and the like. Consider the 48 point patch bay, a standard for any studio. Now, think of 24 Cat5 ins with 36 discreet channels... They talk about being able to plug dirctly into your PC, but are we going to have dual ethernet?? No, you will probably have/need a Magic card with a Cat 5 plug.

Controlling amps from the guitar... Umm, I like foot pedals for that.... Besides, it is already more than possible. In the commercial world, I think all of the Line 6 amps support MIDI and amp switching from there. Danny Gatton had the "Magic Dingus Box" on his LP that allowed him to control the rate of his Leslies as well as controlling other effects.

"The guitar pickups, as far as I can tell, will still be analog." Really?? They won't be traditional Mag Field pickups and be usable. Single string isolation is just not feasible. The GK-2A's from roland use a hexaphonic magnet arrangement, but require that they be very close to the strings, and there are problems keeping good tone when bending. So, they are either going to have 1 piezo per saddle or something totally new. Piezo's don't sound great anyway, so plan on a lot of post-processing.

Now, could these be equipped with an Livewire ?? That would be nifty...

Final summation?? It has some appeal, and those who went out and got a "Roland Ready Strat" will probably get a "Magic Les Paul". I still won't see either of them when I'm gigging. Actually, if any of you Musicians out there are seeing Roland Ready strats used by other bands please give me some band names. I haven't seen one played here in VA in over 10 years.

The problem with DNS is that while the rest of the Internet is fairly decentralised, and that no organization has complete control over it (which is both technologically and politically sound), DNS is very centralised.
But now we have algorithms to deal with this! Distributed Hash Tabels like kademlia and are completly decentralised (every one who wanted, e.g. all (even small) ISPs could particiapte in the system), secure and do exactly what DNS does: it maps one value (e.g. a domain name) to another (e.g. an IP).

One thing Cringley hints at is a coming boom in popularity and capability of truly decentralized peer networks. It is the fully and highly decentralized network architectures that the Microsoft group credits most with resilience against any kind of legal, technological or political attacks.

We are starting to see some of these technologies emerge, awaiting integration into flexible infrastructure that allows fast, easy and efficient distribution of data, content or otherwise, between peers on a local and global scale.

The end result will be a combination of a number of technologies seamlessly interoperating like:

- distributed hash tables

- decentralized search

- swarming distribution

- wireless networks ... and many others.
