Re:Why Encourage Kids to go Science?
What does pay? Perhaps research, (which Vernor Vinge called "Search & Analysis," and noted was at "the heart of the economy,") perhaps technology, perhaps being a system administrator, or being a mechanic, or something like that. Perhaps being a business person or a manager. I wouldn't really know; I've not asked the question "How do I make more money?" deeply enough.
That's an easy one. This is what our society values above all else. -
Re:I found a bug already!First of all, http://picasa.google.com/linux/faq.html doesn't exist.
That's because the FAQ appears to be only accessible from the US.

Details about the optics of TPF
One of my buddies is working on this project. He had this to say about how the optics work:
"The basic idea is that under Fourier optics, a wavefront with electric field E that hits a lens with focal length f will produce the Fourier transform of that field E at a distance f from the lens. This location is called the image plane. The location of the lens is called the pupil plane, and the idea is that if you block part of the light at the pupil plane (say with a piece of material in a particular shape, called a mask), it can change the shape of the Fourier transform at the image plane. If we consider the incoming light to be from a star and a planet, we can design the mask so that there is very little light from the star in certain regions of the image plane, and we can see the light from the planet in those regions.
For a more rigorous introduction, I might recommend this paper from our group, which covers the basics of shaped pupils and shows some of our more interesting mask designs. The real challenges in this area now are eliminating the effects of tiny errors in our optics--the best we can get physically is to reduce the error in flatness of the various mirrors in the telescope design to on the order of 0.01 wavelength. (TPF will work in visible light, so that's on the order of a nanometer.) We need 0.0001 wavelength, though, and so we're trying to use adaptive optics (mirrors that we can shape) to cancel these errors. Researchers in this area are very close to achieving the "10 billion times brighter" from the article, we just need to show we can deal with these errors. Very interesting stuff." -

One word: OpenEZX projectI'm astonished that with such a specific Motorola OSS topic, the #1 OSS website about all this hasn't been mentioned yet:
http://www.openezx.org.nyud.net:8090/The OpenEZX project seems to be quite active, with Harald Welte (of GPL-Violations fame) doing a lot of 2.6.x kernel porting and hardware support. Join the mailing list if you are interested in helping out with this rapidly progressing project!
Unfortunately several people say that Motorola has been less helpful with OSS development than they could have been, but let's hope that this site will change this in a very positive way.

Wow. I had no idea that PS3's logo was so horrible. Taking that into consideration, I think you might have been a little hard on Microsoft. The XBOX 360 logo might not be new or anything but at least it doesn't look like that .

Re:Interesting, but not new
By transferring the power from the Diesel Engine to an electric transmission, modern locomotives are able to smoothly apply power curves of well over 300KW without any of the slippage or rough starts associated with the Steam Engine.
My friends actually built a vehicle doing that for a parade at our university in Stockholm, Sweden. I filmed them riding it. That way they could put it in reverse without a mechanical mess. You see, it works by contracting and extending the wire between the head and the tail, and at the same time applying brakes at the proper places. Similar to the real animal! :-) -

Re:American influence
looks like you need a bit of anonet. can't really intrude on a private network can they, and even then, who was it?
:) -
Purpose for defense or offense?From the article
In interviews, military officials defended the laser research as prudent, given the potential need for space arms to defend American satellites against attack in the years and decades ahead. "The White House wants us to do space defense," said a senior Pentagon official who oversees many space programs, including the laser effort. "We need that ability to protect our assets" in orbit.
Just doesn't seem credible to me.
Far more likely it's to protect America's "intellectual property economy" when it's cheap enough for private individuals to launch their own satellites to disseminate information under any laws they see fit.
Oh - and registration free link courtesy of Coral Cache -
Denial of Service my assThere is no such thing as a "denial of service" attack in a web browser. At worst it causes a crash, and potentially makes you lose unsaved data on some web forms.
If we're calling anything that locks your browser a DOS now, then how come this bug, which is over 3 years old and seems dead simple to fix, is not? I can make a browser DOS on any web page I want:
<script>
while(true) alert('Boom!');
</script>Such a piece of code does not trigger the "script is taking a long time" message because it fires alerts. And the alerts are content-modal so you can't do *anything* to close the browser or tab causing the alerts. You have to kill it off.
No different from the "denial of service" bug mentioned in this posting.

Don't expect the school system to do it for you.My 11 years old son Daniel programs using a variety of tools and has been doing so for a couple of years already (Visual basic, a variety of flavors of Logo, Game Maker. I'll let
/.ers find out what he's using in this photo). He also does other creative things like creating scenes and animations using Art of Illusion - this also involves kind of programming, like creating procedural textures/materials. He learns some math/geometry doing this, since his programming experience drives him to manipulate the data (coordinates) directly to get exact results. He also learns some physics for getting the right results, like making gravitation work close to correct in this game (/.ers should be able to tell what link is the game. Hint: the file extension is .exe*). (well... It not just parent encouragement. After school activity played an important role. School only taught him to use the computer as a typewriter).His 5 year old brother Jonatan already learned to do some "visual programming" using Game Maker, producing working games (though still not one another kid would want to play with. He does get useful things produced this way: Birthday "greeting cards" that can only be made using programming). The need to do everything that his big brother does is enough motivation.

Compiling the "sources" requires (gratis) proprietary software.** comments, and suggestions of useful software that can encourage kids to becreative are welcome.
