Re:MS should reconsider DX10 for XP
As DX10 is implemented now, it can't work on XP, since relies on Vista usermode drivers. They can port it, feature for feature, of course (and some enterprising folks apparently already have to some degree).
Besides, we're all pretty used to companies changing their stories. We let 'em have their justifications as long as they deliver. -

"You know I love Linux, right?"
"Of course. I saw the doll you made."
"Exactly. Lil' Linus. But when I hear that Walmart is selling Linux computers, I worry. Should I be happy because it's Linux? Or should I be scared because Walmart is the epitome of corporate evil?"
"My default position is Cautious Optimism."
"What if Krispy Kreme teamed up with someone's asshole to put shit in donuts? Would your position be cautiously optimistic?"
"Your analogies really are the best." -

I'm sorry for the awful picture you will get in your mind if you continue reading.

Re:Harlan Ellison
Based on Penny Arcade's encounter with Mr. Ellison, I would say the man is unhappy quite often at just about everything.
-
Re:Harlan Ellison
Hey, thanks; I was pretty much ready to fetch my torch and pitchfork over this fucking travesty, but now that I know that it's pissing off Harlan "Fuck off" Ellison, I may even pre-order a ticket.

One way or teh other.
This seems to be what their defense would be, to unlock the content you have to break the law, via DMCA, ergo it is not our(Rockstar's) fault.
That absolutely should work. Pick one or the other -- either it's illegal to do this, and thus not Rockstar's fault, or it's legal to do this, and thus Ubuntu can include libdvdcss.
Where does the line of responsibility end? Why do the content producers have to be responsible for everything the users do?
Because OH NOES THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
Really, at least the content was here, this time. Compare it to, say, the Oblivion re-rating, where a completely third-party mod -- not an "unlocking", but an actual downloading of new content -- included nudity. (Think it was only breasts, anyway. OH THE HUMANITY.) Roughly equivalent to Firefox getting an NC-17 rating because you COULD be looking at goat porn.
But hey, in an era where the PSP gets nicknamed the "Playstation Pornable" by the press simply because it includes a web browser and wireless access...
I'll say no more. Or maybe... Yes! There's more!

Penny Arcade is a good example of that. And it has the added bonus of a web comic thrown in for free.

Penny Arcade reference
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/10/24
I played SWG why back when it was released (first mmog experience) - and it didn't seem bad at first, but then Sony seemed to randomly change things for no good reason ("game balance" ...lol) and then the "everybody is a Jedi" thing happened and I was out the door... -

I attended the Ann Arbor Party. I got into a conversation with Hemos about Vasectomies. I got a good laugh the next morning when I read penny arcade.

Re:Did Jack get the game back?
You know how impressionable teenagers are - a few hours of playing, and Jack Jr. might have been inspired to craft complex literary-political allegories that investigate the nature of humanity.
It could be worse. -

Hopefully they'll stop their obstructive marketing in front of PAX, since they'll be 2 states away.

Yes, it is. Those "comics" suck. -

Re:Yawn
"Heavenly Sword is, as you will soon discover, the very definition of a rental title. Clocking in at somewhere between five and six hours (depending on your appetite for overwrought cinemas) it's a decent game saddled by impossible expectations. It has silly ideas and grandeur in close proximity to one another."
-Tycho http://www.penny-arcade.com/2007/09/12
I was off by about an hour. Does that extra 60 minutes make it any more worth buying? How about the lack of replayability? Yeah.
And the price.. I don't buy games so I was guessing. But when you factor in taxes and shipping (or gas money, we don't all live near the mall) you're at or over $70. -
Re:If you want to play it now
I think it is safe to say that you are in good company when it comes to appreciating steam. Tycho recently said After years of fairly positive digital delivery experiences through Steam, I have to say that I found purchasing a Valve product in a retail context almost unpleasant...

Odin Sphere
My girlfriend and daughter beg me to play Odin Sphere every single day. I'd rather be programming, but invariably: "Lioooon, would you play Odin Sphere?"
It's a beautiful and gorgeous game. I highly recommend it to all story gamers (Final Fantasy and the like.) Also to puzzlers, because inventory management & alchemy (making potions) is pretty involving.
Yes, it's weird-- read the Penny Arcade comic on it. It's not actually as weird as they made it out to be, once you acclimate to it. But, yes: You grow plants made out of the souls of the people you've killed, and then turn them into salads at the Pooka village kitchen, thus leveling up your hit points.
I'm presently halfway through the Pooka prince's first set. (A little bit past that video, actually, is where I'm at.) -
Re:Inexpensive, eh?
If you thought that was childish, then this should drive you into a perfect fit of apoplexy.

Your star burns! Can someone explain what this means to us in laymans terms? I'm just a software geek. I know nothing of this "sun" you speak of. It's not my fault your world orbits a ball of fire!

Portal GotY?
I first heard people suggesting Portal was GotY a week or so ago. I didn't think much of it at the time, but I have to admit that there's some merit to the suggestion. The game is innovative, compelling all the way through, and Penny Arcade has already called it "the best thing on [Orange Box]", which puts it ahead of some very good games. (Obviously some people will disagree with PA, but personally it's a toss up between Portal and TF2 for me, so seems reasonable).

Re:Sooo....
The things I say here are all that you'll know of me, and thus my words can only benefit me by spreading the ideas they contain... hopefully based on their merit.
I subscribe to the GIF theory of Internet discourse. So I have to consider the possibility that your words could also benefit you because you derive personal pleasure from presenting them anonymously, regardless of their merit.
If I knew you as more than an anonymous Internet debater, if I had the opportunity to look at your actions, I might take your words more seriously. -

Re:Please make battle mode not suck
Nothing beats the original, no matter how many newbs think MK64 is better. (Note: not n00bs, just newbs. You're not lame if you like MK64, just inexperienced.)
The one thing I loved more about the original than any of the others was the lack of that annoying power slide crap. You could jump and slide, but there was no speed boost from "wiggling your stick". All that got you was some funny looks from the people around you. You jumped, slid, released the turn, and jumped again to stop your sideways momentum (a slight physics glitch that was really helpful). No boosts. No color-changing smoke. No blue sparks. (Jesus brings them, you know.) Just a good racing game. With Mario-themed weaponry.
Oh, and the simple-yet-fun battle mode... that ruled. Bring that gameplay up to 4 (or more!) players and I'm in. No timers, bombs, or blowing up your own balloons (I never thought I'd be winded playing video games, but Nintendo has proved me wrong), just head-to-head kart carnage like old times. -

Step right this way sir
For the trifling sum of 1.5 million dollars you too can be lairing it up in style...
"The Missile Base consists of 57 acres of real estate. The center secured portion of the property is protected by the original barbed-wire-topped chainlink fence. There is a paved road leading into the property with dual entry gates.
Above ground is the original 40 X 100 shop building, two concrete targeting structures, two manufactured homes, two 8 X 8 X 40 storage containers, and the silo tops of the three missile silos, two antenna silos, one entry portal and a few other misc structures.
Below ground is a huge complex consisting of 16 buildings and thousands of feet of connecting tunnels. The major underground structures are:
Three - 160' Tall Missile Silos
Three - 4 story Equipment Terminal Buildings
Three - Fuel Terminal Buildings
Two - 6 story Antenna Silos
One Air Intake/Filtration Building
One 100' diameter Control Dome Building
One 125' diameter Power Dome Building
One - 6 story Entry Portal Building
and a few other misc buildings and areas."
