Re:Have commenters actually used it?
I have a HTC Vive in my house. I've wanted VR since the '90's and the current generation is pretty awesome. You put the headset on and you're there. There are some games where it works really well and some games where it doesn't. I wish the current generation of headsets had made its way through a couple more iterations before it gave up. A solid wireless headset with a a bit wider FOV and a bit better resolution than the current Vive would have been really nice for the games that I have. A X-Wing game for it might have been the killer app, too, if they could have figured out the vomiting problem.

Re:I am a game developer. Arenanet made a big mist
Just curious: why should posting Nazi ideology on your private blog get you fired, if said posts have nothing to do with your employer and in no way reflect badly on that employer other than simply having you on their payroll?
No you think it isnn't the point but it actually is. Things don't exist in a vacuum and humans are not simple, mindless rules inference machines. Further the world is not a simple binary state either, it exists on a continuum.
Since you need a picture drawn with crayons, the point isn't to equate Nazism with Jessica Price. The point is that it's absurd to claim it's not the company's concern when you publicly talk about company business on a public Twitter account, to which you've attached your employer's name - and then be a flaming asshole to one of the comapny's partners. Now here's another analogy you'll love: you reason like a Klansman justifying his dislike of Jews "because Jews killed Jesus". More on that in a minute.
Yes true.
Not true. Plot limitations is an old subject not just in MMORPG's but RPG's in general, and as a partner to the company, something Deroir actually knows WTF he's talking about from a user perspective. Bioware had this shit worked out with Mass Effect 3, though they were criminally cut short on time by EA to apply it to the main story. Rather than worry about every branching conversation option or plot choice, just assign points to various options the player has taken to see how the story is resolved a la Rannoch.
But even if it was true, and Deroir asked a dumbass question like "have you considered adding graphics acceleration to the game", nothing justifies Jessica going full sexist nuclear hatorade on his ass. If she was capable of either reason or professionalism, she could have answered something like "that takes much more work - which campaigns in the game would you have traded for more meaningful plot decisions?"
Common, even you know this is BS. Just flip the genders
Oh yes. I should just pretend like the world isn't the way it currently is. I know a few women in various tech jobs. They have had to put up with a *lot* of shit that I haven't along these lines.
Except Jessica was the one throwing out a *lot* of shit here, not Deroir. You only get to the play the cards on the table here, not bring in some irrelevant baggage & bullshit. Deroir wasn't some high school guidance counselor telling a student she should really consider a liberal arts degree instead of computer science. He wasn't some GamerGate nutjob doxxing a person he didn't like. He wasn't some fuckwad calling everyone a See You Next Tuesday on a livestream.
Pretending to the contrary, and justifying Jessica's abuse of Deroir by other wrongs done by other people to other women, is straight up "Jews killed Jesus" reasoning. Fuck that. But trying to claim moral superiority while literally becoming what you hate - good luck with that too.

Re:Wikipedia as a "trusted source"?
Yes, yes. We're all aware of the cult of wikipedia. Say anything truthful that isn't kiss-ass about it, remind people that it is "a kind of quantum encyclopedia, where genuine data both exists and doesn’t exist depending on the precise moment I rely upon your discordant fucking mob for my information" and the pro-wikipedia trolls will come in screaming.
https://www.penny-arcade.com/n...
We are 13 years after Tycho's observation and Wikipedia still has the same problems. As an entity it hasn't learned from its mistakes - if anything it doubled down on the "admin as god" cult, bestowing ever more power on a cliquish few who are less interested in getting it right than in deleting what they dislike and making sure nobody ever, ever questions the conduct of the admin clique Judge Dredds.

Re:Please, just let it die.
I dunno man, I'm not so mad about there being yet another Star Trek series. The format of the show lends itself well to spinoffs. It was an engaging SETTING which fostered a lot of stories. I'm cool with that. I'd honestly be interested in hearing how the most devious Klingon and the most bloodthirsty Romulan managed to team up and keep their sides politically aligned during the ${ST_COLD_WAR_ANALOGY}. And it was cool to see how things played out after the collapse of the Klingon Empire and the war-hawks tried to flare it up. Some of the movies were good. There's room for the stories to continue.
Star Wars on the other hand... Well, honestly, same damn thing. It's an interesting (if less hard) setting. Bounty hunters and rogue squadrons and the Vong. Good stories. Some of them. But NONE of that was picked up by the corporate masters. All that was taken out back and shot. We got ep4, the retelling. A direct path to killing off all the old actors. And filling the gaps. (Personally, Rogue One was probably the best of Disney's effort). And star wars got the same treatment. A "reboot". Fuck your canon. THAT'S not innovative. They're literally retelling the SAME old ideas. They're trying to cash in on the fact that people know the name "spock". tch.
Although, it IS kinda cosmic justice if Picard got a ridiculously bad animated series. Something like the stiff flash graphics from Archer, but with Tribbles?

On a more serious note Portrait of a Troll: Q&A with Dr. Erin BuckelsThe problem is the OP didn't show he actually researched the problem and thus sounds completely clueless. This site jumps on people who can't even take 2 seconds to actually "Think, McFly!" about what they are asking.
If he had prefaced his sub-text with something like -- "I just started learning about video streaming and it seems complicated to me" -- then more people would be willing to give them some slack.

Re:What ever happened to defending unpopular speec
What I find fascinating is that all these witch hunts for nazis aren't occurring on public channels--these are private citizen users on privately-owned* social networks putting pressure on their operators to censor speech, which may or may not have any legal equivalency in the public sphere. It's purely business sense in whether the operators (YouTube, Twitter, what have you) choose to remove material that a vocal part of their user-base are objecting to. And that business sense is based on whether advertisers feel safe to spend their money. I think Penny Arcade's Jan 22 strip does a great job of reminding us what lies at the foundation of these tussles.
I.E. if alt right videos are bad for business, alt right videos get removed.
It's fascinating to me as a leftist that complaints of "witch hunts" are being pointed at these blue California tech companies...which are only responding to market forces. Which is the altar to which most card-carrying Republicans and Libertarians pray.
We Americans are in a transition phase in our society, and it'll be interesting to see what comes out of it.
*Alphabet is publicly traded, but the distinction I'm trying to make is public policy/law versus corporate policy.

Rag Doll at Davos
That suit interfered in the politics of Indiana several years ago because he did not like how Hoosiers behaved and what they believed. Now he wants to interfere with the functioning of the walled gardens because he does not like how the human cattle within behave, even though it has been obvious for years how crap-strewn the gardens are. The behavior of the cattle has even been codified long ago.
Nothing is going to come of this because this will be a fight between that rag doll stuffed with hundred-dollar bills and an Ivy League graduate with more pull than the planet Jupiter.

Re:If its like any other UI
Pretty much. Now they've gone back to a start menu from a start screen you can tell that the people who pushed the start screen at Microsoft are going to push some new UI innovation which will irritate everyone outside of Microsoft.
Well a few tech reviewers will write articles where they cut and paste phrases from Microsoft's press release and say 'much better than the old Windows way of doing things' in return for a swag bag from a hot girl at Microsoft PR. And then go back to using their Macbooks.
A few people will point out that for people who actually use Windows at work it is vastly inferior. Or for people who use Windows at home and are not that technical it is completely baffling.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
Microsoft will ignore this of course and push it out by auto update. And then they'll notice that strangely their share of all devices browsing the net, already level pegging with Android, has dropped a bit more as non technical types flee to Android, iOS, macOS etc. Technical types will figure out hack to revert the changes or head for Mac or Linux. Corporations will pay for downgrade rights to older MS OSs.
Microsoft will insist everything is fine for a while, and then introduce a new OS which claims to roll back the changes but which does not. Amusing comics will be drawn.
https://www.penny-arcade.com/c...
Market share will continue to l fall, but technical types who need Windows will stick with their hack. Or rather a newer version, because Microsoft broke the first one with the new OS release. Or move to Mac because they want to be able to build apps for Android and iOS, the only OSs that really matter commercially now that the WIndows ship is sinking even faster than before. If Google were smart at this point they'd offer something which is a bit more capable than a Chromebook, AndroidBook for example, to try to hoover up some of those people fleeing Windows but who don't want a Mac and can't use Linux but they probably aren't. Apple will probably do something stupid to put people off Macs, analogous to their decision to solder in ram and SSD on all new models to stop people upgrading them. What that will be I'm not sure. Switch the whole keyboard to a larger version of the TouchBar for example.
Finally Microsoft will release an OS which really does roll back most of the changes, the way Windows 10 has a start menu with a load of 'tile shit' embedded in it that no one uses but it's sort of OK because it has the Win32 apps people actually use there too. Corporations will still try to pay for downgrade rights, and Microsoft will tell them they can't anymore.
And then the cycle will start anew! It's the circle of life!

Re:The best Windows laptop
The thermals are terrible. FTFY. I had a brief fling with Mac Pro desktops from 2005 - 2009ish. First one happily cooked its "good" video card twice before I ended up downgrading it to the "bad" one. Admittedly I stupidly tried to push 3D with it. If I'd stuck to 2D applications, it would have been OK, if a bit slow for the time. Both Mac Pro desktops I bought are still in service more than a decade later, though, both running as Linux servers. They installed multiprocessor xeons in those things, and they're still actually pretty fantastic for general purpose computing (Despite Apple's attempts to intentionally cripple the hardware.)
The 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros have (finally) solved the longstanding Thermal problems. In test after test, none of the reviewers could get those two generations of MBPs to throttle AT ALL, let alone "Thermal Shutdown".
So, BootCamp MAY be a viable option, since it is really and truly "Bare Metal" speed. And then his son will have the best of both worlds.

Re:Yes the article is a massive troll
Are you suggesting that Apple doesn't have a few rabbid fans that treat the company like a religion? For fuck's sake there's a Slashdot user here by the name of TheFakeTimCook.
Name one. TheFakeTimCook is as much evidence of 'rabbid fans' as the picture of Obama in Kenyan garb means he has a fake birth certificate. This always go the same way:
Apple Hateboi: "Get a load of Apple's fanboys!"
"Ok, where are they"
Apple Hateboi: "Everywhere! Just look!"
"Ok, you'll have no problems finding some examples then."
Apple Hateboi: crickets.
I can't help but notice you weren't following the conversation
That's your problem, I was following the conversation. I also know the definition of "troll" is hardly limited to people spouting racist crap for S&G's on Facebook. It's any fuckwad who says stupid shit for yucks, to gain attention, or to divert conversation. Your original comment....
Just because a few fans will get upset that their favourite religion is attacked
...is you being just such a fuckwad. Because on one side of this is a group of people who harbor completely irrational feelings toward a company and the products it makes - and over there are people who buy iPhones and Macbooks. Because they do what the consumer wants them to do for the price they are willing to pay for, and don't care about other people paying what they want for the products they want.
You could try it some time.
It can't be that
.... OMG you ARE one of those rabbid religious fans!Or...maybe you're just being a fuckwad. Again. I don't love Obama (in fact I'd like to see him in the Hague for war crimes) but I'll go ahead and tell Birthers how full of shit they are. Doesn't make me an Obamabot, just someone who isn't batshit crazy.
