Try a pre-emptive petition by cable subscribersThere have been a lot of comments about "if you don't like hard usage caps, vote with your dollars and go to another service," but as other posters have noted, it's not that simple.
If you just up and leave, the cable providers won't know why you're doing this unless you explicitly tell them -- and not that many people may do this -- and even then, the result is only a sprinkling of isolated instances fielded by bored, underpaid, front-line customer service reps.
A better idea may be creating a pre-emptive petition -- not one of the useless petitiononline.com things, but rather a petition signed by current AT&T Broadband or Comcast subscribers, with their AT&T or Comcast e-mail addresses attached, stating unequivocally that you are opposed to broadband usage caps, and will cancel your service for that exact reason if caps are ever implemented. Send this regularly as it grows to as many AT&T/Comcast corporate marketing/customer service/decision-making addresses as you can find. Add a note to the effect that each signer is perfectly willing to verify his or her position if contacted by AT&T.
(Obviously, there's a logistics problem of how to handle the upkeep without having everyone's e-mail being picked up by spammers. Some sort of moderated listserv would probably work.)
I wouldn't mind seeing a lot more cooperative networks like this one (in Palo Alto, California), but not because the situation was forced by gluttonous corporations who try to fix a problem by creating an even bigger problem.

I generally agree with the posts about how current single-tier broadband pricing is inefficient, and that people who just want the convenience of a reasonably fast, always-on internet connection without using a whole lot of bandwidth don't have any logical options. But usage caps are not the way to go. Most of the problem probably lies in "peak hours" -- so find a technical solution that deals with that specific problem. Restrict bandwidth capacity for everyone during peak hours (defined by relative network overload) -- or during those peak hours, just restrict the capacity of users who have gone over a particular usage cap.
Saying "if you value your P2P and streaming radio and ISO downloads that much, that's fine, they're just going to get really hamstrung around 7pm--10pm on weeknights" is MUCH better than saying "up yours, better count those kilobytes."
Sorry if I'm waving my hands too much about "find a technical fix to address the specific problem," but after a certain point you just have to ask for some level of accomodation on the part of the service provider towards its customers.

No AmigasThis "story" is horribly misleading, it's almost as if somebody made a cut-n-paste from the Eyetech marketing...
No, there are no "new Amigas." No, nobody will make any "new Amigas."
Hardware has no longer got anything to do with anything "Amiga."
Once upon a time (almost two years ago), the UK Amiga shop Eyetech became "hardware partners" of the new company "Amiga Inc." They were to provide actual new PPC Amiga hardware, and contracted the German firm Escena to design it. This failed. I'm sure those "AmigaOne 1200/4000" motherboards are still praised somewhere on the horribly outdated amiga.com web site.
Instead, AmigaOS 4 and newer will run on third party PPC hardware. That could of course have been fantastic news, but for some reason Eyetech, as a thank you for services not rendered and already being a "partner," got to invent a compulsory hardware-licensing scheme.
In order to see AmigaOS run on a piece of hardware, a hardware vendor has to:
- Get a license from Amiga Inc., both for himself and his hardware.
- Become an AmigaOS vendor, distribute AmigaOS together with his hardware and provide software support.
- Apply some form of hardware-license verification mechanism, a dongle, to his hardware.
AmigaOS will NOT be sold separate from hardware.
Not very surprisingly, Eyetech is the only distributor that has accepted Amiga Inc's and Eyetech's rules. They are now distributing Mai Logic's Teron CX and Teron PX POP motherboards under the trademarks "AmigaOne SE" and "AmigaOne XE" respectively. (NB: the 4 figure price listed on Mai's Teron CX page is for a developer board including unlimited dev tech support, they sell their commercial version for $500). The market for the exact same hardware is split up into one microscopic "for AmigaOS" part and one "for everyone else" part.
If you're interested in AmigaOS, you're not allowed to buy it. You have to buy a new Teron board via the sole Amiga Inc-licensed hardware distributor Eyetech. You aren't allowed to buy a board cheaper directly from Mai. A very easily made port to other POP boards like e.g. the Pegasos, or to (in comparison) cheaply and abundantly available PowerMacs can't happen until someone decides to become an Amiga Inc licensee and AmigaOS distributor, and renames the hardware to "Amiga."
In one blow, AmigaOS by default lost every possible hardware option on the planet, except for the "licensed" one.
"Why do they not want to sell AmigaOS?" you ask. Who knows. Amiga Inc is a newly formed company that has nothing to do with AmigaOS (and certainly nothing to do with any hardware), their interest lies in selling their "content engine" AACE/AmigaDE to PDA and mobile phone vendors, and distributing third party developers' little games for that thing. Apparently, and judging from their silence in response to e.g. this petition from AmigaOS fans, they seem to just not care as long as they get some licensing cash from a few Teron boards sold to trademark fanatics. The only apparent beneficiary of this damn ludicrous mess is the sole licensed hardware distributor, Eyetech. Hyperion, the company that has taken over AmigaOS development, has repeatedly stated that they themselves naturally are interested in seeing AmigaOS run on as much hardware as possible, and since AmigaOS no longer is tightly coupled to custom chips or something like that, the HAL is very easily portable.
- Get a license from Amiga Inc., both for himself and his hardware.

"Two Towers" Trailer Dialogue ... A Little Coy?We all know that television pundits aren't going to be able to help themselves from making the inevitable comparison (even though the linked petition was actually a joke by a Slashdot member).
But this trailer has some phrases in it that make me wonder if someone in New Line's marketing department is trying to be a little coy about that comparison. "They were unarmed; they had no warning" was the first line that caught my ear. Then, upon replaying it, I caught:

Sun Microsystems Inc. should leave the production of low-end 'Lintel' machines to Acer, HP, and other Taiwanese clone makers who are more experienced in this segment and have stronger relationships with low-end Intel customers. In fact, I believe Sun could more effectively leverage their intellectual property by adapting their Solaris/SPARC[tm] platform for the low end - and then hamper Linux completely. They claim they don't, but they do, wonder why their are so many trolls, crapflooders and lamers on slashdot, because they are fighting for their rights! Slashdot is trying to silence the trolls. Remove the filters, the trolls get bored, and slashdot will be troll free!
- Lameness filters (It blocks a lot of legitmate posts)
- Unnessary posting delays. Hasnt taco learned to touch type? A lot of posts are typed in less than 20 seconds and it is a ANNOYING DELAY! 2 minute ban? Come on, so some are faster then others, big deal, some people have more to say than others
- Broken moderation system, The whole point is to sort the gems from the crap, yet a lot of posts designed to make a LIVELY DISCUSSION are MODERATED as flamebait! Come on, not everyone likes X, but just because some one bashes it dosent mean its Flamebait. Flame bait is more useful for DIRECT INSULTS and not legitmate discussions.
The "troll" moderation reason is fragmented and broken, why? Because they are trying to use an obsolete usenet term on a realtime discussion, "trolls" can cover a huge blanket of ideas.
- Crapfloods, a meaningless flood of random letters or text, which the lameness filter does a crappy job at trying to stop, besides trolls have written tools using the opensource slashcode to generate crapfloods which bypass the filter
- Links to offensive websites, the most common one is known a http://www.goatse.cx, a awful site which shows a bleeding anus being stretched on the front page. Trolls sneak these links in by posting messages that look legitimate, but infact are sneaky redirects to the site. Common examples include rd.yahoo.com, www.linux-kernel.tk, goatsex.cjb.net, and googles "Im feeling lucky".
- Trying to break slashdot, this is actually a good thing, as it helps test slashdot for bugs. Famous examples include the goatse.cx javascript pop-up, the pagewidening post and the browser crashing post!
Subnet banning, this bans a user unless they email jamie macarthy with their mp5ed ipids. This is unfair, and banning a subnet BLOCKS A WHOLE ISP SOMETIMES, and not that individual user! This can cause chaos! But real trolls use annoymous proxys to get around this so THIS JUST BANS LEGITMATE USERS! Also, they are trying to censor some anoymous proxies, mainly from countrys like africa, so this yet more DISCRIMINATION! If you try and post before the ban is over it gets extended.
Pink page of Death, This censors people who use legitmate proxys or firewalls. It also blocks serivces like CgiProxy and filters like t'inator.
The Bitchslap! An unethical punishment which is applied to moderators who fight censorship against this site! In addition the Editors use their un-limited mod points to create a communist style censored discussion on slashdot! This one sided discussion makes trolls more determined
But, the issue that concerens us the most, is the COMMENT QUOTA. A discrimatory system that stiffles discussion, cripples the community and will ultimateley destroy slashdot unless it is removed! Annoymous cowards are allowed only 10 posts a day! This is unethical! Users with negative karma only get two! That is DISCRIMINATION! How would you like to only be able to speak once a day, just because of the color of your skin. That would be racism, and slashdot is discrimitating on people just because of a negative number in a database! BOYCOTT SLASHDOT! LET THEM DIE!

Farscape Season 5 Cancellation Petition!
I am trying any and all means of communication possible to spread the word and raise support for Season 5. And one more thing
You forgot about the return of the 'software base station' functionality. The older technique worked well but requires too much babysitting for general users. There was a petition some time back to reimplement this feature. And here it is. Compared to their competitors, Apple is very responsive to feedback.
As for the rest, if you don't require these features, you've saved yourself some cash. Choice is a wonderful thing.

Slashdot is using censorship! It is trying to eridicate free and open discussion like we know slashdot to be, it has the following RESTRICTIONS in place to Censor you
They claim they don't, but they do, wonder why their are so many trolls, crapflooders and lamers on slashdot, because they are fighting for their rights! Slashdot is trying to silence the trolls. Remove the filters, the trolls get bored, and slashdot will be troll free!
- Lameness filters (It blocks a lot of legitmate posts)
- Unnessary posting delays. Hasnt taco learned to touch type? A lot of posts are typed in less than 20 seconds and it is a ANNOYING DELAY! 2 minute ban? Come on, so some are faster then others, big deal, some people have more to say than others
- Broken moderation system, The whole point is to sort the gems from the crap, yet a lot of posts designed to make a LIVELY DISCUSSION are MODERATED as flamebait! Come on, not everyone likes X, but just because some one bashes it dosent mean its Flamebait. Flame bait is more useful for DIRECT INSULTS and not legitmate discussions.
The "troll" moderation reason is fragmented and broken, why? Because they are trying to use an obsolete usenet term on a realtime discussion, "trolls" can cover a huge blanket of ideas.
- Crapfloods, a meaningless flood of random letters or text, which the lameness filter does a crappy job at trying to stop, besides trolls have written tools using the opensource slashcode to generate crapfloods which bypass the filter
- Links to offensive websites, the most common one is known a http://www.goatse.cx, a awful site which shows a bleeding anus being stretched on the front page. Trolls sneak these links in by posting messages that look legitimate, but infact are sneaky redirects to the site. Common examples include rd.yahoo.com, www.linux-kernel.tk, goatsex.cjb.net, and googles "Im feeling lucky".

Also, they are trying to censor some anoymous proxies, mainly from countrys like africa, so this yet more DISCRIMINATION!

There should be an upgrade price, but...
don't hold your breath. As I said in the petition, the public's upgrade price should be about $69, and the student's should be about $39.
What Apple (and its customers) need to keep in mind is that unlike Windows, with its myriad versions of the OS, each supposedly targeted for a different market (Home, Professional, etc.), Apple really only has one. Well, unless you're running a professional-grade server, in which case you get OS X Server with it, don't you?
