Thief 3 Editor Petition

If you're at all familiar with Thief 1/2, you'll know that there is a great community that to this day makes Thief 2 missions.

Only ONE?!?!?

I count NINE on their site, four of which are PDAs (two of which are Pocket PCs, though).

Now, if only they had a Symbian phone... (or Opera were on Palm OS...)

Heck, I'd even settle for my free 3588i (non-Vision) to be enabled (petition to Sprint) - it's got the wireless web capabilities, but Sprint's disabled them!

I thought I could put no reply number on my SMS messages on my Sprint Nokia 3588i...

BTW, I think my number can somehow be accessed via e-mail, and I got a traditional e-mail spam... on a bottom-of-the-line voice+text+games (no wireless web, if you want that, go to this petition) phone.

If /. Readers had an impact how was it done? Was there a petition link on the previous story that I missed? Was there a letter writing campaign that I missed? Or the the LWV leadership (and the hundreds of their members who oppose paperless ballots) simply derive all their impetus from the firestorm going on in the comments? Did thjey for example read them and think, "wow we have to move now or these people may moderate each other more heavily!"

I am not minimizing the role of discussion here nor am I saying that posting a comment on /. is a waste of time.

What I am saying is that comments on /. stay on /. If you want to pressure other groups don't expect that they will read your comments and change their minds. What you do is take action at the EFF, join the ACLU, get organization info from Blackboxvoting.org, or send letters to the appropriate people (Congress, Whitehouse) . You can even create your own online petition at PeitionOnline.com. The key is to branch out to others and raise their conciousness level not preach to the choir.

As a registered voter in the state of California (Oakland), I wish to express my concern regarding your DNA initiative. As such a policy will likely be emulated by other states in the future, I must request a strong system of checks and balances be implemented to protect citizens from potential abuse, as amending them after-the-fact will be difficult. It is important that such measures look far into the future when determining regulation.

I am aware that your proposed policy is, in part, to aid in the capture of criminals by scanning suspects in advance of a trial. I agree that this would be of great benefit in many cases. However, I must suggest that it is a violation to persons wrongfully arrested, as they will then have their DNA committed to file without cause. Even with provisions requiring that DNA samples for persons acquitted of wrong doing be destroyed, such a system has too great a potential for abuse.

My requests are simple and do not inhibit the usefulness of such a system:

1. DNA should only be taken from CONVICTED felons, rather than on arrest. This protects innocent citizens who are wrongfully arrested.

2. DNA samples must be expressly limited to criminal identification, without the possibility of use by other organizations (employers, insurance companies, etc). Also, future technologies and methods of identifying potentially violent or aggressive predisposition in suspects may also one day be abused in profiling, creating an unfair bias.

3. All DNA matches must be proven in a double-blind test by an independent party, to prevent corruption of evidence.

4. DNA samples should only be taken in relation to violent crime and other extraordinary circumstances. Felony charges for fraud, wire tampering, and other white collar crimes do not warrant DNA samples at present, regardless of their nature.

The hope of them releasing a Netbook Pro with EPOC just wont happen,

And besides being a Linux convert, Sharp Zaurus can only add to my learning - so it really looks I may end up buying one instead of a say the older Netbook.

They look from the images kind of hard type, I don't want to strain my fingers nor do I want to type with a toothpick.

Netbook seems very ergonomical and looks like you can type 50 words per minute - no problem.

The majority of uninformed users will continue to use IE no matter how ancient and clunky it gets compared to other browsers out there because the vast majority don't have any idea that Mozilla or Opera even exist, much less how massively superior to microsoft's offerings they are.

Yea, and as long as the vast majority is running broken crap, it's hard to create websites that actually take advantage of features like for example alpha transparent images (PNGs w/ variable opacity). Freakin' heck!.

First of all, take a look at http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/pngapbr.html#msie-wi n-unix, and then look at the PNG support by every other major browser on that list. Every major browser there currently supports full alpha transparency, except IE (even in current 6.0 versions). When everyone except MS implements a standard uniformly, you'd have to be very naive to think that is just Microsoft "choosing not to support alpha transparency".

Full alpha transparency is hugely important so that anti-aliased text can appear smoothly on a transparent background.

Actually, G4 is keeping a fair amount of the TechTV content. They say that "The G4 programming day will showcase many existing G4 and TechTV series such as G4's ICONS; PULSE; JUDGMENT DAY; PLAYERS, and CHEAT! as well as TechTV's ANIME UNLEASHED; X-PLAY; SCREEN SAVERS; FRESH GEAR; and ROBOT WARS. G4 will also premiere new original programming which will be announced at a later date." Notable by it's omission is Call For Help. (Leo isn't going to move to LA). An interesting side note is the fact that Chris Pirillo is down in LA already. It is conceivable that G4 is considering him for the "new original programming" in a show similar to Call For Help. Personally, I think this would be a good move for G4. In fact, there is a petition to get Chris back on TV. Use the slashdot effect for a valid reason - slashsign the petition.

There has recently been much restlessness" in the ranks of the Mac cult, with regard to display problems on the 15" PowerBooks. This is a popular model, and Apple appears utterly incompetent at dealing with widespread manufacturing/design problems. There's a petition with almost 2,000 signatures from ticked-off Kool-Aid drinkers.

Add this to the iPod Mini quality problems they've been having, and you don't need to be a Kreskin, etc., etc. to see that Apple is especially beleaguered these days. These OS/X virus/worm scares are just about all they need right now.

I'm sure many of you remember messing around with QBASIC, the free version of QuickBASIC that was distributed with MS-DOS.

Linux Australia has written a draft position paper(or a PDF) on therecently negotiated Free Trade Agreement between the US and Australia,and is looking for feedback.

The FTA has some Intellectual Property provisions that have a severe impact on Australia. The Australian Senate has a Committee looking into it and the dead-line for submissions is: April 30.

Well, what's for sure is that they still won't run on powerpc (12" powerbooks, low-end G5s,...). Please wake up nVidia!

Those of us who have used Apache products know what an great tools the Apache Software Foundation have produced. However, the Apache Software Foundation had decided to name themselves rather tastelessly. The title is clearly meant to refer to the Apache Native Americans, who were the victims of a large scale massacre and enslavement in 1871. In this world, it is unforgiveable that this should be allowed to happen. The idea is both offensive and morally repugnant. Hopefully, when Greg Stein and, more importantly, The Apache Group see the number of signatures on this petition, the title will be changed to something a little more sensitive.

This is the problem with petitiononline; everyone starts a petition without checking to see if there's already a petition going.You posted one with 8000 signatures. Early in this story someone posted one with a mere 1200 signatures. Here's a link to the "official" (insofar as it is linked to from the Save Sam & Max website) petition at petitiononline that has (as of this post) 20,694 signatures.

This may be redundant, but there is a [petition online] to save Sam & Max 2.

GNAA announces plans to bomb Christmas island

Due to recent AUP policy changes at .cx NIC, one of the key GNAA sponsored websites, http://goatse.cx has been found "in violation of .cx AUP policies". This announcement delivered a huge blow to the GNAA organization.
Without goatse.cx, we lose an important piece of GNAA.
"We will not let this happen", GNAA representative goat-see said to the press. "GNAA will begin planning a terrorist attack on the Christmas Islands."
GNAA currently operates a back-up site, also located at the .cx TLD, http://goat.cx. Users are welcome to use this website while we try to persuade .cx NIC to reinstate goatse.cx domain.
"In the event that our peaceful negotiations will fail, Christmas islands are sure to be gone off the face of this planet", added another GNAA member, penisbird.
