Make your own
I suggest you build one on your own as most purchesable stuff is pretty flimsy with a few notable exceptions (Madcatz SFIV tournament edition is damn nice, for example).
I built mine using mdfboard, glue and some lexan glass and it is very sturdy. It has taken quite a beating from frustrated gamers and mashing beginners as
well as enduring an occasional kick without looking too shabby.
Anyway, making your own ranges from pretty simple to pretty difficult. With the simplest possible design you will finish it in a single day with a bit of effort.
Buttons, pcb and stick can be bought from the akihabarashop or lizardlick. Help can be found on the shoryuken forums' tech section.
I suggest reading through the faqs you find there, they are worthy of your time.
A note on joysticks: most american joysticks, Happ sticks for the most part, comes with a octagonal (eight sides or corners) restrictor gate.
What this means is that it has a piece of plastic shaped like an octagon that restricts the joysticks' movement. However they only come with four actuators.
Further note that the actuators are digital, on or off, nothing in between. Japanese sticks such as Sanwa and Seimitsu most often come with the square restrictor gate.
The restrictor gate is easy to swap out on the Seimitsu models and there are, for example, two way restrictor gates avaliable.
Another note on the joysticks: Happ sticks are very stiff. It will require quite a lot of force to move them about. The same is true for Happ buttons. Sanwa buttons activate
very easily whereas Seimitsus requires slightly more force.
Once you have the box ready you will need some form of joystick -> gaming device interface. I chose an old $5 playstation one pad which i got from ebay and soldered
some wires directly on it and then connection them to the buttons and the stick. Soldering on the PS1 pad can be tricky but there are plenty of guides and pictures floating
around on the shoryuken forum to guide you in the process.
Quick disconnects are highly recommended that you use since they are easy to remove should a button wear out. You can probably pick up a few for next to nothing at the local gas station.
Unless you plan on playing on your playstation this solution isnt all that great as it is. A PS1 to USB converter isnt that difficult to get though, heres a list of converters that doesnt cause input delay.
If you dont have a soldering iron or a playstation one pad handy the Chtulu/ChImp board might be of interest.
Slagcoin is a very good source of information, i highly recommend it. Byrdo takes orders from time to time and you can browse joystick vault for inspiration.
Here is my own workhorse creation. Protip: measure twice, cut once.
Good luck and please consider posting some pictures of your creation in the Show off your stick thread. -
Re:If you want *good* - arcade controllers
Speaking of arcade controllers in the home, here is a pic of the controllers I built myself for MAME (and later SFIV). I'm using real arcade parts (some scavenged off a dead cabinet and some obtained from Happ) wired to an ultracheap USB digital gamepad. You pull the inndards of the gamepad out of its casing, solder your buttons to where the gamepad buttons would press, and you have a nice joystick using authentic arcade parts that works anywhere a standard USB gamepad would. I've also built one of these using a 360 controller's innards for SFIV tournaments, but you have to make sure you get a 360 controller with a common ground (not all of them are).

Re:Don't think it will matter
No, the problem is that it's become impossible to tell the difference between someone being sarcastic and someone being serious. No matter what batshit crazy thing you say now, some wignut will try and surpass it in a few years, if they haven't already. Or as some blogger noted, 'their reality has lapped our satire'.
Now, that said, I will try and remember your UID and adjust my sarcasm detector.

Re:So?
Uhhhh - I really don't see a problem. No photographers within 65 feet. Let's think a moment. You want a shot of a boat or a boom, that is, what, 50 feet long? Since any professional photographer has zoom lenses (whether optical or digital zoom, it hardly matters) he can be anywhere within 1/2 mile to get spectacular shots. I can show you a great shot of the ship I served on, shot from ~ 5 miles out - you can see that both the mount 52 deck gun and the missile launcher is tracking the helicopter that took the shot. (It was in a war zone, we tracked EVERYTHING, didn't matter if it claimed to be friendly)
The coast guard doesn't want any one climbing on the booms, or sabotaging them, they don't want to be rescuing some fool who hurts himself. Stay 65 feet away, take all the pics you want. Seems reasonable to me. The original 300 feet wasn't unreasonable, either. 300 feet is terribly close to any working vessel at sea. The rules of the road, observed around the world, dictate that you stay clear of working vessels and/or ships underway.

Re:Bumper solves and creates a problem
What I didn't realise until I read a review recently is that although the Bumper solves the antenna issue, it means that you cannot plug in your standard iPod/iPhone connectors!
I have my iphone plugged in with the bumper now. There's a clearly defined hole of which to plug in the connector. Perhaps your reviewers got the bumper installed upside down?

Re:That's cute and everything....
Well, I'll tell you since I have been working with these boards for a bit now... its really not bad.. I have an Intel Core2Duo E6400 system (Desktop CPU, intel DG945FC mobo if I remember the model correctly) inside an original NES case with a thermaltake meOrb HSF unit. It runs like a dream and the NES case has NO Externally visible vent additions with the exception of the rear exhaust fan (60mm). It is in a small, enclosed cabinet in my tv stand and I have had no heating issues. My next project is to put one of these into a mbox m350 mitx enclosure that mounts on the back of a monitor (VESA 75 standard if I remember correctly, maybe 100 though). You definitely don't need a huge case, you can actually go quite small on the form factor and pack a lot inside small areas, just make sure that your ventilation is adequate, it really doesn't take much to keep the systems cool. Now, if you want a hardcore gaming rig, these aren't what you want (Although the NES does do Half Life2 @ 1920x1080 with all settings jacked), but for a business setup, this is the perfect form factor. People just need to take the time to start making small cases for these boards (Well, companies are now, but not many are trying to make it really small) and start targetting the market that would benefit from these systems (Point of sale, etc.. and yes I know that they already are in these markets and have been for a bit, but broader adoption would be a good thing). For some pics of the NES setup: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v145/ayrus/NES%20PC/

Yep, I've run into this misconception often
A while back I ended up having to make a graph of MPG and gallons of fuel consumed assuming a fixed number of miles driven to illustrate this to people who didn't get it.

Re:Would South Korea's draft be part of the proble
This is true... but at the same time, saying ACE "competes" is a little bit strong of a statement. The other commitments of the people on the team means that they don't get nearly the practice time of any of the other teams, and it definitely shows. I mean, look at the rankings in the latest Proleague. Or the previous one. (Not sure why the stats aren't complete there.) Or the one before that. Or the one before that. The only team that reliably competes with ACE for bottom slot is eSTRO.
ACE exists, and it gives SC players in the military an avenue to play, which is a great thing. At the same time, the service still has a very detrimental effect on the players' skills. In addition to the unfortunately poor showings of ACE, I'm not really aware of any player who came out of ACE and was competitive at the highest levels, even if they were going into ACE. More commonly they come out and become coaches or commentators.

Re:pathetic
This has come up as an issue because of political cartoons referencing Mohammad for completely legitimate reasons. The nature of political cartoons as a speech medium basically requires caricatures or personifications of famous people in order to make a point. In the case of the Jyllands-Posten cartoons, the point was the censorship of dialog about Muslim and how it relates to modern Danish living. Compare the outrage and censorship of those pieces, to how we treat other major public figures, and you'll find that a definite double standard is being applied. Christians, Jews, Hindus, etc deal with blasphemy all of the time in western cultures. Part of freedom of expression involves dealing productively with not liking what other people might say.
Which is not to say that political cartoons haven't become superficial in the last 30 years. But the medium requires pictograms, and the legitimate representations of those particular players is essential to the communication. If you can't draw Mohammad in a political cartoon, you can't critique Muslim culture.

Re:End of Firefox?
Hmmm, isn't looking all too good so far:
http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn108/bemymonkey/Capture.png
With Adblock + Flashblock installed and only one tab (Gmail) open, Chrome uses more RAM than Firefox.
Also, Flashblock and Adblock don't work properly in incognito mode, and the Javascript whitelisting is a) a pain in the ass (two clicks + manual refresh every time you add a permission), and b) nowhere near as in-depth as NoScript (no temporary whitelisting of single elements, no explicit whitelisting of the individual domains trying to insert Javascript on the page, no temporary whitelisting in general... it's just a very all-or-nothing solution).
I have a feeling I'll be sticking with Firefox, even if it uses 800MB of RAM when I've got a few windows and tabs open...

Re:Menu Bar..?
Firefox's best part trick is the UI's ability to be customized. All they need to do is keep it that way. I don't have a netbook but I too am very conscious of vertical real estate. I also love my menu bar. I use it all the time. Bookmarks are there, the print option is there, etc.
You can fit the menu bar, navigation buttons, address bar and search bar or even Google toolbar (don't ask) on one horizontal section saving tons of vertical space. See image:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y113/benfenner/Firefoxmenubar.png?t=1273593698
As long as I can still control how things look I should be happy. Give me a ribbon I can't turn off or re-configure (MS) or tabs I can't move down (Chrome?) and I'm not a happy camper. Make it configurable. -

That's not as embarrassing as outing yourself as the slashdotter who sees advertisements.

I Don't Think So
Purely a setup. Notice how the presence of a black bar insinuates that it's covering something offensive? If you look at the picture, there's all fully clothed, the straps to their tops are visible, including the top themselves under and above the bar.
He's wrong for viewing pictures of girls in bikinis while on government time... but there is no porn here.
I disagree. If you zero reference the women from left to right, women one and three have no visible straps that would hold the top part of their bikinis up. While it's still possible they had something around their chests, I don't know what would be holding up so little material. I do agree that he was just opening up an NSFW e-mail sent him to him and it didn't look like he was "viewing" it as it seemed to be closed as soon as his brain registered what he was looking at. Three seconds and then closing the window is not really "looking at porn" in my book. Accident at best. Even Slashdot has embarrassed me at work.

I'm not trying to say that other devices couldn't do those things, say an Android based tablet, but that these comparisons are kinda lame and childish. Usually, they are made by those that don't like the iPad. Here's a novel idea: Don't buy one! Or, compare the ipad with Android tablets. Then we can have a good article and hopefully some a good discussion about the topics at hand. If the courier was in production or very close to it, it would be another good item to compare to. Till then, I'm pretty sure apple and some consumers (maybe the apple fanatics) are very happy with the ipad. -
Re:Has his geek card been taken yet?
I remember when Windows was much younger and error messages were oh-so-much crueler. Those were the times.
If only those times were totally gone. BSODs are informative, but the number of apps which give some horrifically cryptic error when trying to update without an internet connection is annoying (i'm looking at you MBAM).
In response to your list, I mostly agree, though pulling all nonessentials (PCI cards, etc.) should include front panel headers.

Re:japanese will eat anything i swear.
True, they eat some seafood that we don't.
The Japanese will eat absolutely anything that comes out of the sea so long as they have at least a good chance of not being poisoned to death by it if prepared properly. It's a kind of charming part of their culture, really.
Why anyone decided squid was a good thing to fry up on a stick and eat is beyond me
I dunno, this looks kinda tasty, doesn't it? I'd give it a try.
Actually, I gave squid sushi a try not that long ago. It was ika-geso (squid legs) that looked not entirely unlike this except it was nigiri (some rice beneath it). It was kind of tasty and there was nothing gross about it. In retrospect, it seems silly now to be squeamish about it.

Re:You might want to look up "cognitive dissonance
We can all find quotes for the health benefits for just about anything.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703580904575131611338379340.html
Lengthier smoking habits--but not more intense ones--seem to reduce the odds of developing Parkinson's disease, according to a study in Neurology. The inverse association between smoking and Parkinson's--the neurodegenerative disease characterized by difficulty in controlling movement and speech--was first reported half a century ago, but this is the first study to separate the number of years smoking from the number of cigarettes smoked per day. Researchers compared the smoking histories of 305,468 elderly subjects, 1,662 of whom had been diagnosed with the disease in the previous decade. Compared to the nonsmokers, subjects who had smoked at least a pack a day for one to nine years were only 4% less likely to develop Parkinson's. But subjects who smoked as many cigarettes a day for more than 30 years had 41% shorter odds of developing the disease. The number of cigarettes a day, however, had no significant independent effect on Parkinson's risk. The results suggest that any Parkinson's-protective effects of tobacco reach saturation at low doses, the researchers said.
Chocolate is good for you?
I'm sure it was really healthy for these girls:http://media.photobucket.com/image/chocolate%20fatty/markd2009/singletrack/sexy_women.jpg
I've never smoked in my life but I detest smug arseholes who think they have the right to dictate how other people should run their lives.
Humans are capable of and have every right to make choices to do things which are bad for them.Eating fatty food, eating high salt food, eating chocolate, smoking, drinking alcohol, using drugs, very high risk sports.
All these things are irrational.
All these things can hurt or kill you.but the world contains an unlimited supply of smug arseholes like yourself who are certain, absolutely certain that they Know Better.
You talk about cognitive dissonance and then claim that a high fat, high sugar, mildly addictive substance with little nutritional value like chocolate is good for you.
Let be guess- You like chocolate and so you've decided that you couldn't possibly be making a mildly self destructive choice and valuing pleasure over health.People who consume chocolate live longer?
Can anyone say "sample bias".
There's similar crap about alcohol where it's claimed that a couple of glasses are somehow good for you because people who consume a glass or 2 a week are healthier.
You know how they get those results?
They separate people into groups of people who drink a little and people who don't drink and don't take into account people who can't drink because of health problems and so a former alcoholic dying of liver failure will go into the "doesn't drink" group and drag down the life expectancy for the group.
Lets see if those lovely studies which show chocolate as healthy factored in if parts of the "non chocolate eating" groups were diabetics already obese and on diets to try to lose the weight or otherwise unable to eat chocolate for health reasons.Or we could just let your cognitive dissonance continue and assume it's good for you and that you're a perfectly rational actor.

Re:Programmer art
Look for a FOSS Friendly artist.
I do pixel art at work (because there is a decided lack of any other graphics program at my desk other than MS paint, which I have now become scarily proficient with. I have several "Blank" bitmaps that contain nothing but color palettes and white space to doodle in.) when I am on break, and have made some pretty interesting stuff.
If you want somebody better looking, try the magician.
Here's another "Bored at work." project.
If all you need are 2D sprite pixel art, then I could probably accommodate you. Props if you can provide a color palette, and describe where light sources are supposed to be.
If you need 3D objects, then as long as you only need non-animated 3D solids (like tables, chairs, guns, etc.) I could also probably accommodate you. (I have access to some crazy high-end CAD that I am batshit crazy good with. )
Here's a sample of some of that kind of stuff; A fountain I made to kill time. Never finished it though, because it wasn't important. (Had intended to put fish and naked people on it too. I am still working on a good method for creating good looking naked people in this industrial CAD software; it's not really made for artwork. So, for now, no people or organic forms in 3D, just hard solids.)
Here's a 3D mockup of my work environment I made for one of my boss's presentations. I have omitted showing the rest of the building (which was mocked up similarly.)
So, if you are making games for the Wii, and want an artist, all you really need to do is ask around. You'd be surprised what you come up with.
Even an Anonymous Coward like me can make small pixel art sprites.(BTW, in the off chance that anything I just posted provides inspiration (ha!), all these images are hereby released under creative commons.)
