Re:Is this sarcasm?
It's kind of funny. My dad used to have a large boombox style AIWA radio which took all types of metal oxide tape cassettes. There were different types of metal oxide tape, which by adjusting a particular level would provide optimum sound quality. When these appear on collectors pages, they don't know what all the different levers are for.

Seiko WristMac
I owned two models of the Seiko WristMac in the 1990s. I really loved those watches, but the problem was that they required a relatively rare battery. When my battery ran out, I went all around the city looking for a watch store that had the correct replacement. Finally, I found one store owner who claimed to have the correct the battery, but it turned out that he was lying. Without my knowledge, he replaced it with a similar battery that had a slightly different voltage (if I remember correctly, it was 0.5 volts too high). Unfortunately, the delicate electronics were fried. My father also had a Seiko WristMac, and it was destroyed in exactly the same way--by a watch dealer replacing the battery incorrectly.

That would be a Casio game watch
But they don't make them anymore. Here are some of these awe inspiring pieces of technological achievement:

Seriosly, Casio, if you are reading this: Please, please, please produce another batch of stainless steel game watches. People are already paying $500 for a second hand watch like this one:

Re:History of computing paradigms
I've always had a fond place in my heart for this little gem. My dad still has one which I believe he bought at CES way back when. BTW, it's the Data-2000 from 1983. You could program on it and he had a printer for it. Next time he offers it to me I think I'll accept it

Bone Fone
Maybe the loudness increase is just a reaction to losing real speakers that shake the air all around our bodies. Little earbuds, and even circumaural cup headphones, don't give us the full sensation we want when we're really "getting into" music we like. We crank it up in our ears, longing for the real shake we expect. FWIW, I know I like listening to my car stereo more with the motor running, even when parked, and nothing compares to rocking out while blasting through traffic, screaming the words at the top of my lungs.
Maybe if we brought back the Bone Fone we could crank down the ear damage. Just as a subwoofer. Though those annoying people on the subway forcing their tinny little noise byproducts at the people around them will be a real pain in the ass when we sit on the seat next to them. -
It wasn't Steve Ballmer who said this
It was Crazy Eddie. Where prices are INSANE!!!

26 Years LaterIn 1980 we also had a Bone Fone.

The Original Bone Phone
Anyone else think of the original Bone Phone?

Looks like it could make a comeback as a combination mobile phone and mp3 player; then again, probably not. -

nostalgia for nerds, stuff that matteredCome on people, stop whining and enjoy a good bit of nerd nostalgia!
:)As a kid (lucky me), I had a seiko RC-1000 that you could program with a commodore 64! It took a shitload of time to fill in all the data and there was a maximum of 80 lines, but still! I remember trying to program my french homework in it, but in the end it took longer than just learning the work by heart

Struggling with form factorsSounds like a cross between a Nintendo DS and a Blackberry.
There are lots of attempts to come up with a new form factor and a market niche to go with it. It's getting wierd. Apple's new iPod speakers have the form factor of a ghetto blaster. (There's a strong resemblance between the Apple Hi-Fi and the 1984 Radio Shack boombox with a dock for a Sony Walkman.)

Casio Databank wearers unite!
Screw the Databank. I wish Casio will bring back the CFX-40 scientific calculator watch. I owned two in the 80's and they both broke. Working ones are worth over $400 on eBay now. -

TR-1 to Walkman to iPodPersonally, I think that the TR-1 / iPod comparison is a bit weak... but if we're going to do this, we may as well do it right. Have a look at this link: Walkman History 101
You mean, Apple might have copied the aesthetic design of an old Walkman, and the functionality of an ancient transistor radio?? Could this possibly be an image of the long sought after missing link, between the TR-1 and the iPod?!? Oh no! Technological evolution!! Say it isn't so!!
Honestly! If Apple's aesthetic design team hadn't researched successful designs of years gone by, I would be absolutely astonished! The innovation here wasn't in the physical appearances of the iPod, (as shown by these images of the TR-1 and that random Walkman on the link above) or in the functionality of the iPod (MP3 players already existed from other companies) or even in the interface design (as indicated by recent patent issues brought up by Creative Technology). Apple's innovation here was the integration of all these distinct elements into a single elegantly designed device: the iPod -- which as everyone knows by now, caused the fledgling MP3 market to finally take root! Simply put, Apple did what others had already been trying to do... but they did it right.
(Oh yeah... and I guess the iTunes Music Store may have had something to do with it too.)

Re:copyright
Just because you have a cache of something doesn't give you the right to redistribute it for commercial gain. The initial author still retains ownership.
Imagine if you had a device designed to record audio and reproduce it. That doesn't mean that you can resell your recordings; the original author retains ownership.
I'm not claiming that it is unethical to cache web pages, just that companies such as Google presume that they have the right to redistribute content to which they own no rights. The web is not like Usenet, where each server hosts others' posts; content is served by an author for as long as the author wants. -
Re:Vintage MP3 Players = Vintage Walkmans = Absurd
Going from these sites http://pocketcalculatorshow.com/walkman/history.h
t ml
http://ecen.com/eee41/eee41e/economical_indexes.ht m
and using Pe^(rt), I get that the real price increased from $70 to $115, while it goes for $350, giving it an investment value of 4.8 percent, which isn't great for a collectable, but if you used it and had it sitting in your attic a pretty decent return. -
Re:Centuries? Try millenia!
I'd say the oldest calculating machine, and most used even today, can be found at the end of your arm.

Some gadgets they missed..
In no particular order..
Perhaps it doesn't appeal to the stereotypical geek, but the vibrator. The pocket calculator as well as; The calculator/remote control/radio controlled/FM radio *wristwratch* (surely the pinnacle of minitiaturization!).
Of course, the bonefone: link. The transistor radio. The world receiver radio. The wind-up/clockwork radio/charger. The intimidating maglite flashlight. Glowsticks! Neither electonic, nor moving parts, but who can resist luminecence!
7" 33 1/3rpm vinyl gramophone records; or I can do you even better than that - 7" 33 1/3 rpm plastic gramophone records that were given away as inlays with MSX Magazine, that you'd dub on tape, and you'd "load" programs off of the tape using the regular "data cassette recorder".
CB (Citizen's Band, 27 "megacycle") radio. ZX80. C64. Nuff said. The lava lamp! Duh! The strap-on (wait for it) keyboard (keyboard guitar).
The hearing aid. The answering machine remote control/handheld DTMF tone dialer. Also; the blue box! The minox sub-miniature "spy" camera (as seen in james bond). The SLR Single Lens Reflex camera. Automatic tweezers (They don't work particularly well, but they have a gadget-esque movement)
The portable DVD player. Toys robots (remote controlled, especially; the robosapiens is a good stab at the concept). Magnesium firestarters. (I'm the firestarter!)
Personal Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (P-EPIRBs) RC cars, helicopters. E.g. The translator pen (scans text when you move across it, translates) The penman robotic plotter and of course the closely related concept of the Logo turtle..
The random movement printer (If and when it becomes widely available..) Lego mindstorms (programmable bricks..)
The most important hand-helds historically; the Smith&Wesson and the AK47.
Also, though not an autonomous device, nor mechanical, nominated for achievements in disrupting the global economy, I'd like to recognize bubblejet printer ink, for costing more than its weight in gold or oil.
Aerosol spray canisters; specifically,
every graffitti artist's friend: spraypaint and every gadget-minded geek's friend: deodorant (especially the miniature cans) and of course; aerosol cheese! Also, perhaps slightly more
palatable, mace pepper spray.
The electric toothbrush (with induction-loop-charging-circuit magic!)
Not the greatest gadget in history until you consider it's "dual use" nature, and the fact it's marketed so widely.
Sattellite TV. Not the most portable of gadgets, but come on! Windscreenwiper glasses. (Though more of a chindogu) The mac. The iMac for doing it twice. The aibo.
The "orgasmotron" (actually just a head massager, not at all naughty) Stylish pin clock. The keyghost hardware keystroke logger.
The digital camera. The digital photo frame.
The credit-card sized Anything, but in particular, the cre -

Re:Not new
It's a new use of technologies
It a mp3 player viable where it never was before
It doesnt invovle implanting
So while it may not be "new tech" it is "New and innovating use of that tech in an area it has never been used before"
1979 bonefone
Next thing you know your going to say parents shouldn't get excited about having a baby because millions of people have them every day, its just another lifeform in the world nothing else.
Get sterilized and adopt a third world baby. -
Re:Not new
Ahhh, shades of the Bone Fone!
Remember, kids, it's a "new concept in sound technology that may revolutionize the way we listen to stero music"!
Today's marketing wonks have nothing on their late-70s brethren. -
Re:This is just another example of...
It's hardly new technology, nor the first civilian application. Check out the 1979 bonefone.
-
Nothing new....
Remember the "Bone Fone"???? (warning, nostalgia page!)
-
IDEA NOT NEW
Bone Fone is a 70's example employing acoustic conduction through the body as opposed to the evolutionary air to ear route.
WW-II AT&T 'throat microphone' also made use of 'conductued' sound and it was common for early (20's) radio operators to place their headphones on skull or jaw behind ears rather than over ears. This afforded some degree of 'automatic volume control', protected them from loud static crashes, and made it easier to discern a weak signal when near a strong one.
Back when I swam a lot we puT speakers inside plastic bags and hung them ver the side of the pool. It was OK when both ears were under water but not practical for listening while swimming. Combined with speakers above the water it wasn't much better. Swimming is pretty noisy and indoor pool acoustics generally suck. -
Is it as cool as the Pulsar?
I wonder how long till it ends up here?

Re:Retail outlets? The Sony Stores in Canada or more specifically Calgary have been there for decades. I used to make regular trips to oggle the Walkmans as early as 1983. That was the year the yellow Sportsman was released; much adored by my peer group, much copied by competitors. I believe you can attribute all of Sony's later yellow/orange water resistant electronics equipment to the success of the Sportsman.
Oh the heady days of auto-reverse and conserving battery life: rewinding manually by twirling the tape around with a ball point pen through the take-up reel.
I still have a lingering desire for tiny black rectangles with Dolby's DD symbol embossing the side.

Re:Why i will never buy sony again.Sony is a plague that never ends.
It cannot be denied that SONY was once one of the greatest companies on earth. Take a look if you have not already seen this gallery of Walkmen. They got it right lots of times, in many areas.
In this one area, digital music, they have got it completely wrong. This is unusual for SONY. Their portable digital music players have completely flopped, their proprietary encoder is a failure, and they are being left out in the cold in an area where they should be numnber one.
They were in a position to set the rules. They own Columbia and its huge back catalogue. They have the technical expertise to build the most seductive portables. They have software developers. What they were/are missing is the foresight.
They should have:
Released open players instead of crappy crippled portable DRM factorys
Released the entire Columbia music catalogue for free via a web site.
Watched tens of millions buy their shiny players and split the money with their Columbia artists.
Watch their CD sales increase.
They would have owned the portable music player space, created the number one destination for music online, demonstrated that MP3s are the new radio, short circuted all the RIAA lawsuits, and....acted more like SONY. -
It doesn't matter anymoreThe world of high-tech wristwatches is mostly vapor, vapor, vapor. It took 16 years after the 1983 Casio CFX-200 Scientific Watch (that could do trig and parentheses) until a more advanced watch became actually available, the 1999 On-Hand PC, which runs a variant of DOS.
Will the Toshiba actually reach the wrist of Slashdot user? It doesn't matter anymore, because of the invention of a little piece of plastic: the cell-phone belt clip. While wearing a PalmPilot makes one a first-class geek, even women now wear cell phones on their belts. The cell phone is the new standard for socially acceptable portable computing, not the Dick Tracy wristwatch.
All thanks to a little piece of plastic.

It couldn't possibly play ALL PSX titlesWell, you would have to consider the fact that if that was true, then they would have to re-release all the PS1 games so that the discs would not be full 120mm, and instead be the compact version.
Unless they make something awesome like the Sony D-88 Discman, which was the size of an 80mm disc, but had a sliding mechanism so that it could play a 120mm disc outside of its casing (though making it totally immobile)
