From Pro Audio Land ... Begbroke on an SSL console
Every 777th snapshot (or so the rumor says), Solid State Logic's G series audio consoles would put up the coveted "Begbroke" Easter Egg. The legend said that if that happened when you were mixing, you'd come up with a gold record . . . I can personally attest that that was NOT the case.

For a while we've seen attempts like this in the open source world. Want to muscle your way into an OSS project, despite lacking the talent or skill (or willingness) to contribute anything other than drama, identity politics, and an insatiable urge control others (or remove them if they don't fall in line)? Force a Code of Conduct (which is often explicitly racist and/or sexist, dismissive of merit, and vague enough to be selectively enforced) down its throat! It even works on the largest projects, and lets you dictate developers' behavior on unrelated corners of the web!
Makes sense that they would like even more to impose a Code of Conduct on life, starting when you're a kid.

Re:What if it had supported "social justice"?
That you consider your fantasy of "leftist, so-called "social justice" ideology" to be of the same level as "Hitler did nothing wrong!" and "Bush did 9/11" tells us more about you than anyone could want to know.
Considering the stuff coming off tumblr and twitter? Yes. Especially the stuff that starts merging into intersectional feminism, radfems, and so on. You know like the "kill all men" and various pro-genocide statements against particular groups of people. What? You need examples? Sure, there's years worth of them here. SJW's are just racists, sexists and bigots under a different name, they're no different then the conspiracy loons. But just a FYI, the vast majority of the "Bush did 9/11" are on the left, so are the "it was a Jewish conspiracy." See Leftypol if you need examples.

Re:Still pretty crusty on laptops
If Dell delivers laptops with Linux preinstalled, then it's their problem, they got the hardware to reproduce it and they got paid people working on it.
According to a Reddit comment, even Dell does a partial job in Linux quality assurance. The touchpad supported palm detection, but the feature was not implemented. I'm pretty sure it works if you put Windows on the same computer. How much other small things are there hiding in that laptop that do not work properly in Linux when you take a closer look?
-
Still pretty crusty on laptops
I recently did a quick survey in Reddit on people's experience on suspend/hibernate, and I may summarize it simply by saying that Linux is not the best performer in this area.
:D It's a shame that such an important laptop feature works so poorly. Some might say that it's because OEMs do not "support ACPI spec properly", but in practice most PCs don't... It could be more practical to just find the patterns that Windows uses, and imitate them. One really weird thing is also that backlight adjustment requests are sent to both ACPI and GPU, which causes double backlight adjustment events on many laptops.
People fight about SystemD, various open source licenses, differences between DEs, filesystems, but at the same time there's these fundamental problems which should get way more attention. Sometimes it feels like we are in a house arguing what kind of wallpapers bring the best experience, while that same wall is infested with mold inside.
Some people still talk like this is supposed to be the hi-tech kernel that breathes new life to my PC. Are they blind to all this stuff happening?

Re:Not worth it
You can pull all of the telemetry "updates" without sacrificing the rest. It helps to actually read the descriptions of the updates you're installing. They're not all that cryptic. If it it's an update to "cusotmer experience", "telemetry" or "windows update", don't check the box and hide the update.
PC master race reddit has a good summary of older ones here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmas...There have been a couple of newer telemetry updates since then. Read what you're installing. Since win7 is not receiving any updates other than security, telemetry BS and windows update BS, it's not even all that much reading.

Lost generation
Yes, percentages mask two big factors: generational bias and the basket of goods. With the number of good-paying jobs shrinking due to globalization and automation, the few remaining jobs are going to Boomers and GenX'ers who have experience, shutting out GenY/Millennials and GenZ. At the same time, the basket of goods those younger generations are facing is skewed due to college tuition outpacing average inflation.
Thus the younger generations are facing the double whammy of fewer jobs and a basket more expensive than average. This has led to the term https://www.reddit.com/r/lostgeneration/.

Re: Telemetry = spying END OF DISCUSSION.
I personally choose which data to feed based on the convenience levels I desire.
You personally choose, are you sure? Millions of people personally chose Chrome as their browser, or Sumatra as their PDF reader, or ACDSee as their image viewer, only to have those choices reset by Microsoft. It happened in November. It happened again last week. Some people have it happen frequently.
"You choose" does not seem to be a concept supported by Windows 10.

Re:**Distributed** VCS.
That's not how civilization evolves.
That's exactly how civilization evolves. We got Reddit when people got fed up with Digg and made something new. We got BitTorrent when the RIAA forcefully closed Napster. We got tor and i2p when governments started to try and limit people's access to stuff.
The good news is I don't have to write my on GitHub alternative, multiple people already have. GitLab offers private repos for free. My FreeNAS machine has separate jails for Gogs, GitLab and gitolite. My VPS is running gitolite.
People are sitting and whining about GitHub when there are multiple valid alternatives, that's not 'evolving' civilization it's sitting and whining about a free service.
request the owner who is responsible to make it better.
Or you find a new 'owner' that already has stuff unbroken from the start.
Nowadays you can't offer constructive criticism without the blunt commentary
That's because 'kids these days' sit and whine non stop that the free services they're using aren't doing things the way they want them done. I followed the whole 'gamergate' for a while on some of their premises that I agree with but if you read
/r/KotakuInAction it's 90% whining about Twitter, Facebook, Reddit or someone else 'censoring them' while they continue to use those services. If you really hate how Twitter works or who they hire STOP USING THEM. Instead you somehow think it's better to sit around and bitch and moan that Twitter isn't doing things the way you want them done and that's somehow Twitter's fault. Any slashdot reader should be able to put together a microblogging service in a few hours.
The biggest argument I've seen against migrating away from GitHub, Twitter, Reddit, et al is "But everyone else is using them". Seriously? The most difficult reason you can't migrate services is "But my friends don't hang out there"? Whine harder about how "SJWers" are ruining all your things and see if it actually changes anything.
Life's hard, wear a helmet, find a new service that fits your needs but no one wants to sit and listen to you bitch.

Beware of hacked ISOs if you downloaded Linux Mint
Beware of hacked ISOs if you downloaded Linux Mint on February 20th, 2016!

"I'm sorry I have to come with bad news.[1]
We were exposed to an intrusion today. It was brief and it shouldn't impact many people, but if it impacts you, it's very important you read the information below.
What happened?
Hackers made a modified Linux Mint ISO, with a backdoor in it, and managed to hack our website to point to it.
Does this affect you?
As far as we know, the only compromised edition was Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon edition.
If you downloaded another release or another edition, this does not affect you. If you downloaded via torrents or via a direct HTTP link, this doesn't affect you either.
Finally, the situation happened today, so it should only impact people who downloaded this edition on February 20th.
How to check if your ISO is compromised?"

Perhaps, I didn't get you quite right. Could it be that you didn't read the article attentively enough? The things we write about aren't really nonsense. For example, we are aware what is strcpy and memcpy. At times we see that people read our article not very thoroughly and then start arguing. I'll provide such an example concerning memcpy - see Fragment N1 and the comments below. This is a completely different case, I've provided it to show that the readers should carefully look though the code examples we provide.

Re:Will Twitter's destruction wake anyone up?
As the politically correct SJW crybullies slowly destroy Twitter,
So what? So they destroy twitter. It's hilariously entertaining to watch the 'kids' whine constantly about Reddit and Twitter being destroyed by the "SJWers" but yet when you ask them why they still use it "because everyone is on it". If you don't like the way a corporation does business STOP USING THEIR PRODUCTS. They refuse to move to a new service because they like their safe space where they currently exist.
I gave up reading
/r/KotakuInAction because while their heart is in the right place (stopping censorship, journalism releasing connections/payment) it's 90% just sitting and whining about Twitter or Reddit. It takes $5/month to spin up a VPS that can host any number of forum softwares. If you don't like being censored it takes 10 minutes to setup TOR, I2P, Freenet or any number of other services. If you don't like the Reddit or Twitter Mods make your own twitter or Reddit. Microblogging isn't a difficult problem. There are plenty of examples out there on how to use Redis and Python to create one.

We should discuss the recent GitHub problems instead. Some shit is apparently going down there, and it involves social justice.

People are finally getting fed up with leftism.
I think we might finally be getting to the point where more and more people are seeing through the hypocrisy of the leftists who are pushing this "social justice" nonsense.
While more intelligent people have seen through the charade for a long time, it's finally dawning on the less-intelligent folks that "social justice" is just intolerance, hatred, injustice, and prejudice bundled together and mislabeled with a deceptive name.
I was reading the discussion at Hacker News and Reddit about this pathetic ordeal over at GitHub:
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11049067
https://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/44hque/github_is_undergoing_a_fullblown_overhaul_as/
In the past, especially at Hacker News, people would have defended GitHub without question. But surprisingly we saw a lot of people at Hacker News actually pointing out how it would be extremely racist to not hire white people to perform some job just because of their skin color!
If such people had made such observations in the past, they would have typically been attacked by downmod squads. Perhaps they still did, but just maybe enough people are waking up that the downmod squad attacks were naturally counteracted by legitimate upmods.
I think it's a combination of factors leading to the ongoing downfall of "social justice".
As more and more incidents have happened, it has become more and more obvious just how hypocritical and stupid "social justice" is.
We've also seen leftism fail in other ways. The whole situation in Europe, with them being flooded with illegal invaders who proceed to engage in various sorts of crime, has started to wake up a lot of people there who followed leftism without really thinking about it. They've come to realize that everything the "social justice" supporters and leftists said about these illegal invaders was completely wrong.
In the US we have Donald Trump who is finally expressing ideas that have been forbidden for so long, yet that so many people know to be true.
Even here at Slashdot we've seen, so far, the new ownership not bombard us with bullshit "social justice" stories like the previous owners did.
Hopefully we will soon see the global end of the "social justice" academic quackery that has wasted so much of our time. But when this does happen, we will need to be extra careful. The leftists will return, and they will be seeking revenge.

And what data in question?
"Microsoft collects and uses data about your speech, inking (handwriting), and typing on Windows devices to help improve and personalize our ability to correctly recognize your input."
" It also includes associated performance data, such as changes you manually make to text..."
Microsoft also tries to guard you from Malware, a noble purpose... but in doing so it can leak pretty much all of your URLs.
The statement you respond to is not quite correct because the line about the "indexes of your harddrives and other storage devices" appears to be specific to the technical preview. But other than that, yea, it's pretty much spot on.

Re:And the next time you see a Code of Conduct
The problem is actually two fold, I agree with you that people confuse free speech with it being ok to be intentionally offensive. But the other side of the coin is people feel they have a right to a "safe space" and should never have to see/hear anything that's only offensive to them personally, then going after people that fall somewhere in between for not complying 100%.
The issue with the CoCs that have been being forced lately is a result of people wanting tools in place to go after those that disagree ideologically and/or politically with issues that aren't even part of a dev project. See the Opal disaster the AC below linked. It's incredibly underhanded because the communities don't even get a chance to have a say. The CoC is introduced, discussed and merged into a project in less than a day before anyone, that doesn't know it's being talked about, can have any input.
This plays into fears the "SJWs" are coming, which fuels the the freeze peachers into asserting they still have support. Us moderates in the middle are just like, "why do I have to pick one or the other?"
I fully support people's right to say what they want, but also agree that needs to be tempered with some common sense. If you act like an asshole people aren't going to want to deal with you, and you can't force them too.
I have no issue with a CoC, but why are they even necessary? Can't we just look at someone that's being an ass on a project and all agree they're being an ass and we don't want to work with them? Or if you're an individual that doesn't get along with someone, just don't work with them? It feels like people are only pushing CoCs so they, as an individual, can personally decide who to oust. Even if no one else sees an issue with the person being attacked. The CoC just puts tools on the table so the first one to accuse wins, that's kind of the opposite of a safe space. What's worse is when you look at the people proposing the CoCs THEY ARE THE ABUSERS! They're the worse people to be arguing for tools to hold people responsible for actions outside of dev projects. Hell just look up "Coraline Ada" who after pushing the CoC for the Opal project went to twitter to drum up a mob of people to attack the project to force them into accepting her CoC or "Randi Harper" (FreeBSD) who harassed Roberto Rosario out his board position with the IGDA and then proceeded to harass members of the FreeBSD community after pushing to have a CoC along with many other people. She harasses ANNE QUEEN OF VAMPIRES RICE for god's sake.
TL;DR - People on both sides, overly offensive and overly offended, are a menaces and justify then feed each others existence.
