Windows Phone 7 is a dead duck.
Your comment, it's just not true. (not my chart, btw). The integrated Facebook app is a good indicator of a mobile platform's market performance. Facebook users are common enough that they make a significant and representative statistical sample.
WP7 peaked below 1.5% market share on release, and is declining. It's now seeing about 4,300 new adopters each day worldwide, which is pathetic even for Windows Mobile. There is no way this can be described as "doing just fine." Its user base will never hit the 1.5 million units Microsoft claims are already delivered on its current trend, so somebody's about to get stuck with some dead inventory.
Its replacement Windows 8 has already been shown running at CES and the roadmap has a 1/7/2013 in-store availability scheduled. W8 being a full Windows rather than a mobile OS will of course not be compatible. Intel has committed that they will field phone platforms with it that run regular Windows applications on x86 phones. They're "all in".
So there's no reason to buy a WP7 phone. It failed to thrive, its execution date is set. There's no reason to develop apps for a phone with few users and no long-term prospects either.
Funny story: the KIN had about 8,000 sales and 300,000 Facebook likes. The integrated WP7 phone Facebook app has a little over 300,000 users now and less than 4,000 Facebook likes. It looks like buying Facebook likes has gone out of vogue with Microsoft's marketing department. But apparently hiring astroturfers to post on slashdot has not.

debunked
This was re-debunked on reddit yesterday.
http://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/f71tv/that_post_about_how_80_of_aols_revenue_comes_fromOf course, given any non-negligible absolute number of people who are in this situation it behooves us as techies to get their stuff straightened out so they're not paying for something they don't need. So what's the real problem? That these x00,000 people don't have a closer family member who is a techie?
Maybe we need to start sticking our noses into the business of anyone we know that sends e-mail from an aol address? In as friendly a way as possible, of course.

Vancouver has its pros and cons. It all depends on what your lifestyle is. It's been called the No Fun City due to archaic liquor laws, restaurant/bar hours, and other things. Not a big deal to me personally.
Check out the threads on http://www.reddit.com/r/vancouver, there are a ton about people asking to move there. Recommendations about neighbourhoods, etc. Check out http://www.bctechnology.com/ if you are looking for a job in high tech.

I got a virus while using Chrome.
Running Windows 7 x64 Professional on my HP netbook. Surfing using Chrome with no plugins on reddit.com. Thousands of other people did as well with various other browsers (see reddit announcement).
It came in through an ad utilizing a Java exploit. I was only 1 minor release behind on updating my JRE. Since this incident and the 45 minutes it took me to get rid of the stupid thing, I now surf with Firefox + adblock + noscript addons. It's just not worth it. I used to be OK with ads and even clicked on them occasionally but forget it now.
I have to say that was I absolutely shocked that Chrome let something like that through and that it was able to infect my system even though I never run as an admin user. Windows Security Essentials detected it but still let it infect my system and was unable to clean it out, so I ended up cleaning it out manually. -

works as pretty basic block transform API, and there aren't many places
where one could smuggle key bytes out. We always used arcrandom() for
generating random numbers when we needed them, so deliberate biases of
key material, etc would be quite visible.

If you value democracy...
If you value democracy then you should understand that the backlash from the WL episode will be a push for laws and technology to control communications at the direct expense of democratic ideals which require free speech. Anonymity and secure peer-to-peer communications, already at risk, will be further threatened under the premise of terrorism. If you want to help ensure that democracy prevails in the face of reactionary politics, then run a TOR server ( http://www.torproject.org/ ) now, and consider any of these alternatives.
-
Terrorism joins the war on Copyright Infringement
The new war on "Information Terrorism" is about the join forces with the war on copyright infringement in pushing for IT related laws at the direct expense of free speech (and hence, democracy). Anonymity and secure peer-to-peer communications are at the root of this conflict on both sides. Consider doing something instead of just watching.

Today, the music died.Folks, today is the day that reddit out-interneted slashdot:
I'm focusing on the Atlas 5 because it's the launch vehicle for the X-37, most definitely the most spooky-secret thing the US has (publicly) in the sky. The last time they launched it the world flipped out and lost track of it for a while, but those pesky fuckers at SEESAT-L found it anyway.

there's no way any normal person can write easily in C what is possible in Haskell.
I used to think that too, up until about a week ago when someone on reddit was challenged to write a C++ equivalent to Haskell's zippers. What he came up with was pretty impressive.

Re:Evil which ever way you look at it
First of all, it is unlikely that Google actually programmed that part. It was probably part of Harmony.
Combined with the fact that Google used a Java decompiler to obtain the code, and the version they had decompiled was not even OpenJDK, this stinks in a major way. It's not just your patent lawsuit, and not even copyright infringement - it's blatant plagiarism.
-
Re:The code is obviously ripped
-
Re:I have to wonder
In the case of at least one class that Oracle claims to be infringing, apparently, Google (or someone, anyway) just used a Java bytecode decompiler.
-
Re:Here's Oracle's Example
A little more here, sadly: http://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/dxmvr/oracle_google_directly_copied_our_java_code/c13qfov
Upshot: Decompile the code with JAD and it's identical. It looks like someone screwed up pretty badly in this instance. -
Re:Abode Is The Weakest Link
The problem is that it is not "only supposed to be a document display". Someone gave a pretty good summary on Reddit about a month ago. The conclusion is that Adobe Reader is most likely overkill for 90% of the users, and you should stick to something like SumatraPDF or Foxit.

I, too, saw the speed of Firefox 4 in a pretty simple, math-only benchmark that rotated a 3D object. Run it for yourself and/or see the gathered statistics (bottom of the page). Here is the Reddit discussion where many people run it and confirmed Firefox 4 supremacy.

Re:Why not do multi-level branching?
My personal connection is behind two layers of NAT. I have ZERO connectivity issues with my business site and network from home, without needing a VPN.
How nice for you. What is your point in relation to my original statements that NATing the internet wouldn't work?
My site has taken a redditing, 4chan DDoS and slashdotting all on the same day, and stood up, most websites will never have the capability to claim that.
You mean this? A journal entry doesn't classify as a "slashdotting".
Do you really expect me to be impressed by 6 static content pages with a shopping cart redirecting to a third party payment system? It's laughable that you consider this noteworthy.
I even checked out your other claims, such as Reddit (which you submitted yourself). Wow, how did you stem the tide with those 4 upvotes and 23 comments?! (11 of them being from yourself and the others criticising your website)
The 4chan DDoS I'm guessing you just made up since it makes no sense at all for anonymous to go after you.
None of this information you've posted makes you impressive or knowledgeable about networking. You are simply a fraud who figured no one would call you out of your bullshit. Stop trying to pretend to be something you're not.
Anyway this is besides the point. What has anything you replied with got to do with my or your original comment? Nothing, I think this pretty much shows you're wrong when you can't even back up your original statements and instead simply go completely off topic.
While you think I'm going to be obsolete, I'm busy producing full crops without requiring light for photosynthesis. I can grasp and understand systems and their processes far faster than you could possibly imagine, and streamline the entire thing.
All of which has nothing to do with networking. I'm happy you've decided to switch jobs. IT was obviously not your strong suit.
Hopefully you'll also fix your attitude problem, lying and inability to actually stay on topic. Oh wait, you're just making slashverts my bad. Keep trolling.
Oh and by the way, you're only 28 years old and you think you're old hat?
And that is why I have my job as a research director.
Ofcourse you are Mr. Research Director (turn off your sound folks).

Re:How?
A few days ago smbc comics was hit with a Java exploit in the form of a popup that installed a trojan on users machines. People affected were discussing it here; from this it looks like mostly Windows machines were infected, but at least one user claims Ubuntu was affected.

Windows phone 7 botnet?
The scary thing is one Windows Phone 7 botnet could accidently bring down a carrier's nationwide data network when commanded to do a DDOS on some big website - that is, if Windows Phone 7 ever sells more than 500 units total. Of course we're all sure that Microsoft did some good security work on Windows Phone 7, right? Because they have such a long reliable tradition of network and app security, and this platform wasn't rushed out the door missing any features or anything.

For some critical discussion of the "productivity", this recent thread might also be of interest. bombing a mall seems so easy to do. i mean all you really need is a bomb, a regular outfit so you arent the crazy guy in a trench coat trying to blow up a mall and a shopping bag. i mean if terrorism were actually a legitimate threat, think about how many fucking malls would have blown up already.. you can put a bag in a million different places, there would be no way to foresee the next target, and really no way to prevent it unless CTU gets some intel at the last minute in which case every city but LA is fucked...so...yea...now i'm surely bugged :
/If that post gets you FBI monitoring... The FBI has WAYYYY too much time on their hands. But one has to laugh at the irony of the "I'm surely bugged"...

Re:Do no Evil?
That's not a valid argument. It's an implied ad hominem at best. You can do better. Do so, or shut your FUD spreading mouth.
He works at Google and he's saying he is oblivious to the wayward track they have taken. My position is that he's turned his head to it, like many others there, and that is why I said I rested my case. Now obviously that's not enough for everyone. Okay fair enough -- I'll respond.
Google was forged by the fact Yahoo had lost its way. If Yahoo wasn't a profiteering, cantankerous example of a company that had lost its focus around the time Google was gaining momentum, then Google could not have gained momentum.
Google is an example of how a company like Yahoo was begging to be replaced. The irony is that now we find Google in the same position because of many examples of how they are not following their motto of "Do No Evil".
Phoning someone up to see if they want a job, out of the blue -- cold calling your competitors... well that's the kind of thing Mr. Burns would do. It's fucking evil. Now I expect companies like Apple to do it. I expect the other corporations to be that shady. That's their way.
But Google? No.
Now I keep reading examples in the media -- often little stories presented of how Google has lost its way. They add up.
Now you can ignore the examples, but it seems that every day or every other day there are comments about Google harpooning Net Neutrality, presenting examples about how Net Neutrality is bad or a thing of the past, and we hear tales now of how Google is poaching employees directly by phoning competitors... it adds to prove they are NO DIFFERENT now than other companies their size.
Anyone against the Net being free and neutral supports evil. Google has taken this position.
Okay back up a second. Think of how Google started out. Google was like an oasis among other websites when it first launched. That didn't last. They introduced advertising and a model to create adds. They sank a lot of other email providers and then targeted the users with advertisements.
The kinds of people who pay to use adsense/adwords are the kind of get-rich-quick fucks that caused the first internet bubble to burst (well they formed the bubble and it popped because of financial physics...)
But now recently we hear stories about how they send a paralegal to try and prevent some poor schmuck from claiming his $721 adsense revenue. That's not an isolated case.
My position is that Google is evil now.
