Taco is a flag desecrator and an Anti-Delawarian!I submit to you the following, to be used in whole or in part for the purpose of tormenting Cmdr Taco until he relents and corrects the icon. - PW
:)
As noted on the Smithsonian Institution's site [si.edu] [si.edu], the first official American flag had thirteen stars and thirteen stripes, each representing one of the thirteen original states.
The flag icon for Slashdot's 'United States' section is missing its first stripe - the stripe that represents Delaware, the first state admitted to the Union. While a simple oversight could be forgiven, it should be known from here on out that Slashdot is in fact aware of the missing stripe, and even worse, refuses to do anything about it! [sourceforge.net] [sourceforge.net]
This vulgar flag desecration and rabid anti-Delawarism must be put to a stop. Let the Slashdot crew know that we will not accept a knowingly mutilated flag or the insinuation that Delawarians deserve to be cut out of the union. I ask you, what has Delaware done to deserve this insolence, this wanton disregard, this bigotry?
This intentional disregard of a vital national symbol is unpatriotic. Why, the flippant remarks CmdrTaco made about our flag border on terrorism! I urge you to join the protest in each 'United States' story. Sacrifice your karma for your country by pointing out this injustice. Let's all work together to get our flag back. Can you give your country any less? -

Dear mr troll,
I appluad your fine sense of trolldition! But I feel that your troll could use a bit of polish. I tried to find a reference to the "controversy" about who the "real" "discoverer" of the "planet" "Pluto" was, but unfortunately, the first hit on google was this : Discovery of Uranus
As it seems that my worst paranoid fantasies about the internet becoming sentinent and malicious have been proven by google giving me the goatse, I have nothing more than to say -- "I have cornered the market on rice." -

Foucault pendulum too subtleTo properly understand the Foucault pendulum requires a fair amount more understanding than many realize. At the north pole, the pendulum makes a full circuit, once per day, and is reasonably straightforward, but at other locations, the change depends upon latitude in a subtle enough way that most people don't really grasp it. In particular, I am surprised that so many museums have elaborate displays and inadequate explantions of why it does not complete a full revolution each day. Many museums explain that this proves that the earth rotates, but do not explain the computation needed to compute one's latitude from the amount of precession per day.
I have taught undergraduate differential geometry many times, and covered the relevant material (parallel transport of vectors along non-geodesics, holonomy) and frequently even reasonably strong students have a hard time with understanding it correctly. Particularly when I put a parallel transport question on an exam...
This Smithsonian FAQ has a bit about pendulums, but just says the relationship is complex. The California Academy has a page that is much better than a typical museum explanation in that it mentions that the amount of precession depends upon latitude and gives the relationship (precession is 2 pi sin(phi) where phi is the latitude) as well as making a reasonable effort at an explanation.

(well, it's not going to start another space race, but it sure would be nice if it regenerated a little interest in the general public.) -
Toshiba propellers
I'm not sure how Toshiba can make good on selling milling technology to both sides in the cold war. Propellers are obsolete anyway now, but it's the thought that counts.

Re:We should go on the offensive
Hmmm, the Million Man March was just a few years ago (1995), and it was followed by the massive Promise Keepers rally. So big marches can happen - they may or may not be very effective, but with sufficient organization they can be pulled off.

Re:Damn..
Damn, I had thought the native Americans discovered America.
It's increasingly looking like the current crop of native americans bumped off a preceding group of peoples. Here for more info

It's not the cars, it's the fishing boats
Another take from the Todd Mundt Show
Todd Mundt had on his show today a marine biologist purports the changes in global climate follow the decline of marine species, not the rise in other aspects of society, including logging. The marine biologist and paleontologist was Dr Jeremy Jackson of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Another write up of his research is here -
Re:Kennewick ManYeah too bad we can't study that dude some more.
From the website: "Many of these characteristics are definitive of modern-day caucasoid peoples, while others, such as the orbits are typical of neither race. Dental characteristics fit Turner's (1983) Sundadont pattern, indicating possible relationship to south Asian peoples."

Get back in lineThe Chinese will just have to join the queue of people that apparently discovered America before Columbus. In addition Columbus actually did not discover the American main land, but landed in the carribean. So just to round up the current list of America discoveries:
- Native Americans. They walked! Well....now its suggested that they sailed!
- Vikings. Made short crosses from Greenland to Newfoundland, but didn't settle as such. Just popped over for the timber. There was a whole bunch of them!
- Celts. St. Brendan sailed there in a leather boat. The trip was reinacted about 25 years ago The original history and The book
- The basques. They sailed across to catch cod. Book by Mark Kurlansky.
- The Chinese in a 1000 ft boat....hmmmmmm!
- Columbus stumbles across the Carribean. The Columbus Navigation Homepage and The Columbus Landfall Page.
- John Cabot finds the American main land, which if all the theories are correct would have been getting crowded already! What little is known about John Cabot.

Re:Gates, and revisionist history.
Even if he DID say the quote, it has definately been taken out of context...Nobody is that shortsighted, not even Bill Gates.
Well, given some of his statements from his interview with the Smithsonian that I've been citing a lot tonight, it does not seem out of context at all. Take for example this sentence from his discussion of the original hardware development of the IBM PC:
But to my surprise, we ran out of that address base for applications within -- oh five or six years people were complaining.
Read the rest to get the context for yourself. Seems he was either short-sighted in either his original belief, or in what he should be saying in an interview for posterity. Either way, a mistake on his part is plausible.
-
Re:Bill's history lessons
From all accounts the IBM PC was essentially designed and manufactured in just over a year. Microsoft was brought in at least a year before the launch because writing the code would take time, so yes Microsoft was in a position to make comments about the PC design at an early stage. As Bill himself states, they were not listened to.
You're right on MS' input on the hardware. Back in 1993, Bill was claiming a much greater and successful involvement in the hardware development. To be more specific, it seemed at the time that he was telling people Microsoft and he himself were listened to quite well:
BG: Microsoft was playing a much broader role[laughs] than just doing software for this machine. I mean whether it is the keyboard, the character set, the graphics adapter, or even the memory layouts. I laid out memory so the bottom 640K was general purpose RAM and the upper 384 I reserved for video and ROM, and things like that.
-
Re:Revisionist historyI don't have an exact source, but The Smithsonian has a very enlightening interview with him from back in 1993.

Re:Revisionist history
...the history that he provides (i.e., we really wanted to do things right, but the evil hardware people wouldn't let us) is self-serving and not exactly correct.
That it was not correct seems to pinpoint it. This interview with Bill Gates that's in the Smithsonian paints a slightly different picture:
http://americanhistory.si.edu/csr/comphist/gates.
h tm (A transcript of a 1993 interview). Specifically under the mouse: http://americanhistory.si.edu/csr/comphist/gates.h tm#tc44
"I laid out memory so the bottom 640K..."
So he seems quite clear that he himself did that. In the same interview he used "Microsoft" and "we" when appropriate, so it seems that in context this is indeed claiming that he himself did that.
Now, let's compare to the "spin" version of things:
1996 Bloomberg: "The IBM PC had 1 megabyte of logical address space. But 384K of this was assigned to special purposes, leaving 640K of memory available."
contrast that statement to the earlier one of:
1993 SI: "I laid out memory so the bottom 640K was general purpose RAM and the upper 384 I reserved for video and ROM, and things like that."
D'oh! By 1996 he 'forgot' that he was the one who did that. Ooops.
1996 Bloomberg: "We at Microsoft disagreed. We knew that even 16-bit computers, which had 640K of available address space, would be adequate for only four or five years."
contrast that with his statement from the SI interview:
1993 SI: "But to my surprise, we ran out of that address base for applications within -- oh five or six years people were complaining"
Look's like 20-20 revisionist history. Seems to be in-line with having held the opinion that 640K (ten times the shipping memory of the IBM PC) would be enough. In 1993 he was defending it. In 1996 he was denying it.

37 meters in 12 seconds, or approximately 6 knots. Essentially, jogging speed. Their longest flight that day was 260 meters in 59 seconds.
Come visit Washington, DC, and visit the Air and Space Meusem.. Personally, I like the Bell X-1. -

Right handed/left handed? The part I found most interesting was that the creature seemed to be 'handed'... it "may have been making sweeping, brush-like movements with its right feet, collecting small animals like worms and crustaceans from the sediment which it then "combed" with its left feet, pushing the most desirable prey items towards its mouth." Of course, I'm presuming the reason they mention the right side and the left side is because it's could be supported by the trial evidence.
What's interesting is that scorpions are built pretty symetrically, like humans (at least externally - the internal organs that we only have one of are all over the place). I wonder if all the creatures were "right sweepers", or were they mostly "right sweepers" (as 90% of people are right-handed), or if it's a 50-50 toss up (like in lobsters).
Check out a quote from this site:
In the cursher claw the closer muscle is composed entirely of slow fibers, and in the cutter claw it has 65 to 75 percent fast fibers and 25 to 35 percent slow fibers. While claw placement in the adult is essentially random, it can be demonstrated in two ways that the muscle fiber properties are not genetically fixed: (i)if one claw is removed in the fourtyh and early fifth stages, the remaining closer muscle develops all slow muscle fibers, and *ii) if the animals are raised in smooth-bottomed containers, both claws can become cutter types, having closer muscles with more than 50 percent fast fibers. Thus, as in vertebrate skeletal muscle, the proprties of lobster closer muscle fibers can be transformed by various experimental manipulations.
Sure wish I had one of these guys to study and play with, not just their tracks! (ok, maybe not play ball with, but you get the idea) -

Here's an interesting page on the same topic. Note that water scropions have only a superficial resemblance to their landbound namesakes and aren't particularly nasty.

A lot of the time, I think I prefer the latter more than the former.

Re:Not a squid/Convergent evolution
"Convergent evolution": Widely evolutionarily separated creatures develop the same appearance and methods of feeding and reproduction. One spectacular example is the naked mole rat (see them yourself) which is a small mammal that lives like an ant or termite, including having a queen, workers, etc. Live like a jellyfish, look like a jellyfish. But you won't revert to jellyfish structure, any more than mole rats become cold-blooded or exoskeletal just because they act like termites.

Re:Should USENET be considered as historic value?
Interesting remark. There are efforts already to preserve computer hardware from ages past (look at the National Museum of American History and the Computer Museum). But I'm not aware of any efforts to preserve computer software. Or at least the software hasn't been given as much emphasis as the hardware. This can be started with the preservation of USENET materials. Other stuff that I can think of: the source code of the original PDP/11 UNIX and Linux. Hopefully, as time goes on, companies will be willing to donate the source code of their obsolete commercial software.

Where to get an 8-track player
Can you get a drive to read 8 track music today?
Yes! Start here.
Or how about a tape recorder/player which works with spools of soft iron wire (used in the 1940s).
Museums such as the Smithsonian Institution maintain equipment that can still read old formats.
The only data sure to last thru time is that which can be read by humans directly: Text
And what happens in 802701, when nobody knows the English language anymore?
and Photos on film/paper.
Film rots; paper rots unless it's acid-free. What are the oldest pieces of visual art that survive? Cave paintings.

Re:IT is.
> Most in China will secretly tell you that their government sucks, but they are too afraid to do anything about it.
In some ways, the long history of China, full of authoritarian rule, makes people fatalistically complacent. I've heard it described by some Chinese that they feel like they're currently living in the "Communist Dynasty" which will one day be replaced by the next dynasty, as has happened for thousands of years.
Interesting historical fact: This "Communist dynasty" idea might have literally come true in China (as it has in North Korea with Kim Jong Il succeeding Kim Il Sung), except for the fact that Mao Zedong's heir apparent, Mao Anying, was killed in action during the Korean War by a U.S. bomber strike.

Re:This theory of mine.. Global Warming is Bunkthe answer you seek is contained within:
Most of the environmentalist bunk over the past few decades is exactly that: bunk. It generally hasn't been well thought out. -Why- do we care if the left-handed spotted ocelot is wiped out? There is no reason we should care. We're on the top of the food chain. We have no natural predators (except tigers, but we've pretty much taken care of THAT, and again, why do we care, except that they're pretty?).
...the last two words, in fact.we want to keep nature alive because without it, we might as well all live in gray cinder block buildings under flourescent lights.
in western society, humans are just a couple generations removed from living with nature instead of next to it. but we still like it, we go to great lengths to be around it, to look at it, to play in it, to escape from our normal lives and get back to it. we devote huge expanses of valuable real estate to it.
it's not the extinction of indiviudal species that 's the issue, it's the principle; some people get really angry when they see other people seeking short term profit at the expense of the nature we all enjoy.

Not fruit
A kylix is a wine bowl. Believe it or not, that name has nothing to do with Codeweavers. There are various stories, but the one I believe is that somebody saw a picture of a bull painted on a kylix, and thought that kylix was Greek for "bull". Anyway, an "-ix" name works well for this product!
