Re:Next Gen p2p
"Wheres the comments denouncing the act of copyright infringement that took place?"
HEY! This is Slashdot! We'll have none of that "honoring the rights of the copyright holders" here!
Haven't you heard? Information wants to be free, as in beer! Besides, it's all commercialized consumer crap, and none of us would have bought it anyway! Oh, and they charge too much, and we can't afford to be entertained and to eat, too! Anyway, they don't provide it in a convenient, politically correct, form, either! And, they don't pay the artists enough, despite the fact they entered into legal contracts dictating payment terms! Also, we'd buy it, if the price was fair, in our estimation! Besides, it doesn't cost them anything when we download it via BitTorrent because they aren't paying for the bandwidth! We PAY for our Internet connections, too, and all it is is collections of ones and zeroes anyway! And, real artists don't create for money! Some of us are artists, too, and release everything that we create for free, so everyone else should too! And if they don't, we're entitled to it anyway, because information wants to be free! And, copyright laws are bad and oppressive and infringe on our right to be entertained! So, we're actually engaging in civil disobedience, just like back in the '60's when all those poor oppressed Black people marched for their civil rights! We have the right to be entertained for free, and the greedy corporations are denying us! We're standing UP against THE MAN!
Did I miss anything?
What a sad, pathetic place Slashdot has become. The editors post copyright related stories, ad infinitum, usually under "Your Rights Online", no less, with a cynical eye towards revenue generation, knowing that all the spods and wannabes will salivate at the chime of the copyright bell.
And here's the ultimate in irony: It's all done in the name of money generation... simple honesty at this point should compell someone to redirect http://slashdot.org/ to http://slashdot.com/, instead of the reverse.

Re:It doesn't matter...
It doesn't really matter what the TLD is. Internet-enabled phones will provide a way to enter it expediently.
Yeah, there is the thing for the web called google that does the same thing.
TLDs have simply gotten to be cash cows for those registrars out there, the sleezier the better!
I mean, who would have thunk that going to http://slashdot.com/ would get you to slashdot.org? Heck, I remember when you would introduce slashdot to someone and you tell them to go to slashdot.org and they would type http://www.slashdot.com/ and I would have to correct them twice. Slashdot used to not answer to www.slashdot.org only slashdot.org. The .com did not work at all.
With all of the cybersquatting and registrars buying up generic names for domains, I just go to google to find a url, not blindly type in the address into my browser unless its a known one already. -

Re:Common sense
Look, maybe "Common sense" is too strong. I never said the domain should go to Apple beacuse it's a mega corp and "you-don't-wanna-mess-with-the-MegaCorp" kind of thing. I'm just saying that it makes a lot more sense if the site belonged to apple. I honestly think the guy doesn't need that domain and could very well donate/sell/auction the name.
Let's look at this from another perspective: What if www.slashdot.com didn't redirect to slashdot? do you think that would be fair? What if went to a porn site or to chiwawa lovers site? Wouldn't it make more sense if www.slashdot.com redirected to slashdot?

Re:For anyone who remembersOn a more serious note, what's up with Denial of Service attacks anyway? I guess I'm not informed enough to really offer a technical solution -- but on the client side, DDOS attacks are made with zombie bots/machines...which means an army of unpatched boxen. It's one thing to get yourself flooded out of IRC by some "crew" but a completely different thing to have major sites get killed because of an exploit infecting thousands of machines which should have been patched months ago.
Yeah, Windows users are really terrible about keeping their boxes secure. I'm just proud that, as part of the open source community, my box never causes any problems for other people's servers.

I miss the sense of community on pre-Web BBSes
What first drew me online and kept me excited for years was the sense of community that people had in the BBS scene before the rising popularity of the Web. Despite many attempts at creating this same feeling on the web from AIM, to Craigslist, Friendster, gMail to even Slashdot or Kuro5hin, I have not been able to develop the same type of relationships. It seems almost bizarre to suggest that a global online community could have a BBQ or meet for dinner at a local fast food restaurant.
People like Jom Jennings of FidoNet and Scott Converse of OneNet really deserve to be recognized by organizations like the VCF. The communities they fostered, perhaps because local dial-up networks kept everything provincal, are probably what I miss about the modern Internet with its spammers, phishers, con artists, Patriot Act, unsecure email and general lack of polite behavior. More than anything else, this misplaced sense of community is what I miss about the early days online. -

too many links
Is it just me or was that article way over-linked?
In keeping with submitters' tendencies to link to every single page on the web in the hopes of making the front page, I propose that all slashdot articles have links on every character of every word. For example:
S l a s h d o t.
Wouldn't want to miss any trivial pieces of information, after all. -

Re:hmmAhh, but sift throught the vast number of blogs that are done primarily to keep friends and family up to date on what Timmy is doing while he's away from home or whatnot and find the truly interesting Blogs that are sources of information on specific topics like Zeldman, or the blogs that gather information for similiar minded people, oh wait, you're already familiar with those, technically Slashdot is one of the greatest in that realm.
That doesn't mean that the small fries are to be discounted. There are tons of truly interesting, but small, blogs that are out there that give a varied view on topics with a personal touch. If you separate the wheat from the chaff, just like the rest of the WWW, you can find some real gems.
On that note, here's a shameless plug for my new blog,
.: Bent Double :.. Lacking in content, but only because it is still very new. -
Re:This is also done with domain suffixes.
Unfortunately/Fortunately the wonderful people at slashdot have secured www.slashdot.com which switches over to
.org as most people know. Better yet, a fellow slashdotter in the name of slashdot precured www.slashdor.org because he was sick of the timeout messages. -

Actually, he got one into the Shatner interview. IIRC, he had negative karma at the time, so he had tps12 post it for him. The judges have agreed to count it anyway, so PG is still in the running for the 2003 Troller of the Year Award.

Slashdot Posts Useless Story for $0
Lev13than writes "In a pretty routine blunder, slashdot.org has inexplicably posted an article about Amazon making a typo. The article is for sale for just over $0 (plus postage and packing). It's not very hard to get through to their site right now, but if you're bored you can have a look at their blunder here." Don't bother clicking through, Slashdot will post a dupe in 20 minutes.

Re:ServersErr... ok I misread the parent post. I read it from the perspective of someone hosting a server on the fiber network. You can do that (with their business acct), and take advantage of 100 Mbps from your server pretty easily. But you'll probably end up paying a ton of overage at the end of the month if your site turns out to be the next Onion, Homestar Runner, or Slashdot.

Poll Stuffing on Slashdot
The CAPTCHA website (how do you pronounce that, anyway) has a list of possible applications of CAPTCHA. The first mention is online polls, and recalls an event in 1999, when Slashdot (they use http://www.slashdot.com for some reason) had a poll for the best graduate CS curriculum. Carnegie-Mellon and MIT wrote competing poll-bots that stuffed the poll boxes. The point was supposed to be that a CAPTCHA would have prevented this. In my opinion, however, this was probably the most accurate Slashdot poll ever. Obviously, MIT wrote the better poll bot, since it stuffed more votes, and they didn't even start until somebody noticed that CMU was stuffing. Hence, the winner of the stuffing contest turned out to be the true winner of the poll.

Re:Sha, I wish
Wow, now that strikes me as a lot of FUD. Do you work for Microsoft? Okay, I will deal with these complaints one at a time.
He said they'd found massive security issues with Linux
Okay, fine. But what operating system hasn't had massive security issues? It's the nature of the beast. If you've been paying attention to Slashdot lately, you'll know that even the ultra-secure OpenBSD has its share of security holes.
He said the reliability wasn't quite high enough for those mission critical items we performed
Well, given that this was in 1998, he may have had a point. But Linux has improved quite a bit since then. 2.2 was a very stable and reliable kernel, and since the 2.5 branch, I've been using the latest kernel on all of my high demand enterprise servers.
He said their was nobody to call when it broke
Yeah, except for Red Hat, SuSe, Caldera, Debian... Next!
He said that the haphazardly "open" way it had been developed practically guaranteed the existence of bugs
Yes, but they are shallow bugs. Read RMS's article, the Cathedral in the Bizarre, located here for more details.
He also said that the licensing issues prevented our lab from putting the results of our experiments in the public domain
Hahahahahahaahhaha. That's a good one. Maybe you haven't heard about the GPL, but under Linux's license you actually are required to release your experiments to the public. Try doing that in Windows!
I hope you are now educated and will not go believing any more FUD of this sort.

Re:Naming Conventions
I could never get used to typing slashdot.com.
Exactly what I was talking about! www.slashdot.com takes you to -- you guessed it -- Slashdot! They own both variations. (They don't seem to own slashdot.net though. Odd.) So which is it, CmdrTaco, is SlashDot a money-grubbing whore site, or is it a bastion of hipster iconoclasm resisting the commercialization of our internet? :-D--------
We all live under Monkey Law. -
Re:Listen to your public! We yell at others to do
Try this link: Slashdot.com
They bought out slashdot.com a little while ago, it's just a forwarder address but with them being owned by OSDN and now the subscription setup, I would consider them a company. -
Re:Yeah, but will they rename it Slashdot.com?
Try going to the site http://slashdot.com; you will be redirected, instantaneously, to http://slashdot.org. -
Re:Sorry Taco.
You know, after all these years my bookmark still has me going to http://slashdot.org.
This is so inappropriate now, I think I need to start going maybe to http://slashdot.com or perhaps slashdot.biz?
btw, fix your lame redirect on slashdot.com; you are *NOT* an organization any longer -- you are a commercial entity hence the .com. -

Re:DNA Pic?
Remember that crappy software that M$ wanted to foist on us to relieve us from "under-linked" sites? Slashdot seems to be using the open source version thereof.
-
Re:Could we have a Slashdot post history as well?
-
Re:Ummm...
No, no! It IS slashdot.com! Try it!
-
EasyHere's the synopsis:
"Hi, I'm Rob (CmdrTaco) Malda and my website slashdot is really low on cash. So we though we would hawk a crummy mp3 player from an equally cash strapped company and maybe make enough money to cover JonKatz' monthly sex toy bill. Please buy one of these. Thanks!" -
Re:not exactly an MS fanatic, but..."Microsoft will only get better and better at it, the general public will only grow more and more confident with their fight, and less and less exploits will be discovered."
IMO, this isn't a bad thing. It's really a "catch 22" your talking about here, isn't it? MS, over time, churns out an OS that is more secure than the rest and as a result becomes the OS of choice. Not likely.
I don't believe this would lead to a "Monoclonal OS prevalence" on the internet because people do learn from other peoples mistakes. That's what places like this, this and, this are for.
