Re:Wow
And the thread in question that Apple is bitching about. Don't know if/when it will be "gold" so that it's publicly available, but I'm guessing soonish.
-
Hilarious reading...
What's Apple thinking? Something Awful gave the Ultimate Warrior's "Director of Communications" a flying elbow off the top turnbuckle when he threatened them with a lawsuit, does Apple think they can fair any better?
-
Re:End of thread
As much of a silly storm in a teacup as this is...
Apple is not trying to delete the thread, just remove an image from one of their service manuals. How is posting sections of a service manual fair use?
According to the definition of fair use in US law it potentially falls under fair use if it is "for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research", with a certain amount of fuzziness regarding the actual details with regard the purpose and character of the use, the amount excerpted, the impact on the potential market for the copyrighted work etc.
Now, in this case we have approximately a third of a page excerpted, most of which is an image, so it wuold seem to be a legitimately small excerpt. The excerpt was very clearly being used for criticism and comment - read the actual post. I don't see it as at all likely that having this small third of a page excerpt available on some forum online having any significant impact on sales of Apple repair manuals. It seems that this very much falls almost directly into the category of fair use. I think, really, the burden of proof is for you to explain exactly why this isn't an example of fair use.

Re:Actually...
Let's not forget that the site they're going after is this one.
Yes, they're going after a site with Mother Teresa with a Broken Finger and Pizza the Hut on the front page. The one that reviewed the Vore RPG (NSFW... RNSFW), and has a running section called The Horrors of Porn (NSF...NM). Going after them is a lot like shouting at a woodpecker to stop bashing their skulls into a tree, especially with the Legal Threats section so prominently featured on the front page.
Don't get me wrong, I love Something Awful. They're one of the few sites that believe in truth in advertising. I just wouldn't expect them to respond to legal threats in anything other than a deragatory comedy fashion. I expect a review soon that gives Apple's threatening legal letter a score of -48. Worst Legal Threat Letter Ever.
Actually, technically, they're going after the forums. 'cause those people on the forums really listen. -

He's also famous on 4chan and, presumably, on a site related to 4chan, Something Awful. 4chan is full of geeks who are into tech on the web. There is a dark underbelly of the internet that is YTMND, Something Awful, and 4chan (and its many spinoffs).
Everyone has to have seen the owl with "O rly?" written below him! That originated on one of these sites. These three sites are to memes as Paris is to fashion. -

Topic is now "Post your b3sT n00b/sn0b IRC log!!1"
Seriously though, I think that we all have run into assholes on IRC. If you want support, an semi anonymous chatroom may not be the best place. You can find forums or other places to get good support, but IRC isn't the best
.. IMHO.
For example, if you are new to making Fedora usable, fedorafaq.org and the like have some good hints on how to get things setup. I also personally have found good help on the forums I lurk the most, http://forums.somethingawful.com./ I used to be a Unix/Linux admin, so I also spent a good deal of my time helping people there. There still are some tools, but it isn't nearly as bad as IRC. -
Asshole physics engine
According to Something Awful, it's asshole physics engine is also lacking. i.e. you can be a total asshole in the game and no one cares.

Tetris
Nothing they do will ever top their Tetris video. Imagine a guy dressed up like the "L" block, running around, finding the perfect spot next to a mailbox, and falling into place. Meanwhile, people wandering around the street wondering what the hell this guy dressed up as a block with a cameraman is doing. All set to a techno rendition of the Tetris theme. Good times, good times.

Paypal is evil !
Avoid paypal if you can. They are not a bank and so are not regulated in a way banks are. When signing up you basically agree that they can do with your money what they want, like freezing your account, fining you or whatever. Of course, they decide what surpicious activity is. I think a judge should decide if this is to be done, not some employee of paypal.
For example they held back a lot of donated money for Katrina victims:

Light bloom
something awful satirised the "next-gen" gaming attitude beautifully a few days ago, with this work of art:
After almost a combined man-hour of intense research with our Vice President's grandson, Steve, we have discovered the only two things modern gamers really care about: Motion blur and light bloom. And believe us, we have those two things in spades. -

At risk of starting yet another debate...This is complete and total rubbish.
Take, for instance, your average microwave which can cook an egg in about two minutes. It has a magnetron that operates at roughly 2.5 GHz, at 700+ watts inside of a reflective faraday cage. While the egg is inside of the microwave, the radio waves emitted by the magnetron cause the water molecules inside to change orientation in sync with the polarity of the wave passing through them. This vibration results in friction, which creates heat, and in turn cooks the egg (or whatever other food is inside of the microwave). This affect is amplified by the fact that the microwaves are contained inside of a metal chamber which prevents them from escaping and helps to redirect them into the food.
Though some cell phones operate within the same frequency range of microwave ovens, they have a maximum (regulated by law) output of 6 Watts. This wattage, combined with the fact that the output is not contained within a localized area, means that the microwaves emitted by the cell phones would have a hard time even penetrating the shell of the egg, let alone cooking anything.
Furthermore, it is important to note that cell phones do not communicate directly with one another. When a call is made, the caller's phone signals the tower which contacts the second phone. All communication between the two phones is done through the tower. The two phones communicating between one another is made irrelevant by this.
Lastly, the if one explores the source site (Wymsey Village Web) for this page has the motto of "on the nick of the cutting edge of rural parody" and bills itself as a humor site. Taking stories from a site such as this would be just as foolish those things written on sites such as Something Awful, the onion, or Pointless Waste of Time. This only shows that one must always question the validity of ones sources, no matter how enticing or appealing their content may be.
It is somewhat disheartening to me that this would be covered on slashdot as factual information. I am bothered even more, however, by the fact that so many of my peers have readily accepted this as a fact even though it has an obvious air of incredulity.

Boll interview from G4's Attack of the Show
I don't believe this is the whole thing though. I remember him rambling on about how he wanted in BloodRayne to tell her story of where she came from, and that's why it's nothing like the game. And very seriously wanting to continue telling her story through time...the next era being Western. He was dead serious. Also, there is an article telling of the adventures the original screenwriters for Alone in the Dark and their encounters with Uwe Boll. Damn funny, and shows how nuts the guy is! Read it here.

posters plastered everywhere? -
Whoa, there are people still playing that?
Disclaimer: I'm not that representative as a MMO player, and in fact I'll take a good SP RPG instead any day.
Still, on a scale of "pretty cool at least at low levels" to "its _only_ merit is the franchise name", WoW would be at the first end, SWG seemed _the_ poster child for the latter.
SWG, after all this time at it, has pretty much any problem you can imagine.
E.g., design problems, such as classes whose only source of income is hoping that someone would drop by and give them a tip. (Try making any money as a male entertainer, then tell me how it feels.)
E.g., underhanded custommer support, such as banning everyone who's been tipped with duped money. (Never mind that they can't even refuse a tip or know it's been with duped money.)
E.g., technical problems (a.k.a., bugs), such as seemingly having _massive_ lag even on a 50ms connection. Sometimes enemies you've just killed would hang around and seemingly talk to each other for another ten seconds or more. Sometimes they'd rise from the dead and melee you, then fall over dead again. Sometimes a whole herd of low level animals you've killed and already skinned when farming for resources, would remember "oh, wait, we were supposed to fight back" and give you literally a death by a thousand cuts. (Never underestimate the damage a tattooine chicken can do if 5 minutes worth of a whole herd is applied in a 1 second burst, not leaving you any time to heal or run or whatever.)
Etc. That's just scratching the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
And yes, changes which swing between bad, worse and horrible. And let's make up for it by giving some free in-game money to stimulate people to buy the latest expansion pack. (You get a free vehicle which happens to be the best vehicle in the game, and sells for over three million credits without even trying too hard.) Says a lot when an expansion pack's main merit is that it's a veiled and more socially acceptable way to buy gold.
In fact, the only game that sucked more, and even then at launch, was AO. You can read the AO review on Something Awful and rest assured it's entirely accurate. I can personally testify that all the problems described there were true, plus a bunch of others.
So does anyone still give a fuck about SWG, other than purely for franchise sake? If you took away its Star Wars license, it would shrivel and die like the piece of junk it is. So does anyone really give a damn if they move the timeline forwards, backwards or sideways? I'd assume that even out of the minority of desperate SW nerds who stay there just because it lets them dress like a jedi, the majority would be just as happy in any timeline as long as it has lightsabers and skimpy cantina-dancer outfits.
(I mean, obviously, other than Raph Koster, who uses the glory of having majorly fucked-up design for _two_ MMOs as an excuse to give interviews about good game design all over the place.) -
Not to be a douchebag, but
ampednews broke this story last month, and I'm sure it was submitted to Slashdot (the site owner even admits to wanting slashdot to break it).
So why didn't Slashdot publish it then? -
Re:Is it just me?

http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=2706
They also put a banner or something on every page that said "Mourning sucks" or something of that nature. Basically, the people behind the game obviously had no skill at dealing with trolls, turning a snarky capsule preview into a big legal battle to decide the fate of the universe. Since I'm sure MMORPG developers have to deal with trolls on a regular basis, this couldn't have made them look good to anyone.
