Re: Absolutely still a thing
What matters is that some devices are officially (without weird exploits) unlockable.
Yes, there are lots of other devices that aren't, but so what, fuck them. Just vote with your wallet.Off the top of my head, at least Motorola, Sony, and I believe Xiaomi have unlock procedures. And IIRC the Nexus/Pixel phones were even actively pushed to upstream Linux by Google themselves and have always been unlockable.
Still plenty to choose from!Trusted boot is a useful protection against certain exploits. And yes that needs to be at the chip level for it to be trusted (in the computer meaning of the word).
Unlocking comprimises that, and most people don't want LineageOS, and most people choose phones that aren't unlockable. So why then would they make unlockable phones?People just need to educate themselves. Do you want to be able to put a different OS on, or modify it (when official support stops)? Then choose an unlockable phone. As long as people keep throwing their money at those future paperweights (for whatever reason), they will keep making them.
Then again, I don't live in the US with the power drunk carriers demanding locked bootloaders (heard something like that)

Re:No, it's not
I definitely think part of the problem, honestly, is that the whole domain naming system was bad marketing in the first place. It's a pretty clever technical solution, but bad marketing. People got on the internet, and they want to go to find stuff about Sony, so they go to the address bar and type "sony". It doesn't work.
So then someone explains, "No, you have to type http://www.sony.com./"
"Why?"
"I don't know, that's just how the internet works. You have to put 'http://www.' in front of everything and then '.com' at the end of everything. If you want Sony, it's http://www.sony.com./ If you want Microsoft, it's http://www.microsoft.com./ It's too complicated to explain why. It just is."
Then they drop to "www.". Then you don't have to type in the "http://" anymore. Then the address bar becomes a hybrid address/search bar. Most people still don't understand what the deal was with the "http://" or the "www." or the ".com" or why you need any of it. And they still don't have to, and they're not going to. The explosion of TLDs is probably just going to make people rely even more on the reputation of search results.

Re:Sony Corporation is a Japanese multinational
Why is the US justice doing this? Sony in NOT a US corporation.
Sony Corporation is a Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation headquartered in Knan, Minato, Tokyo.Sony Corporation of America (SCA), parent corporation of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE), is based in New York, and SCE's subsidiary Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC (SIE) is based in San Mateo. HTH, HAND!

Re:Shouldn't that be 16K? Who makes this shit up?
Resolution is NOT by definition pixels; the context must be understood to infer what is meant by "resolution". Traditionally, resolution is measured in lines per millimeter, or more properly "line pairs" (cycles) per millimeter. If you speak to an optical engineer about resolution, he will be thinking in these terms or similar, a linear measure.
Step 1 - Ignore obvious context of remarks.
Step 2 - Assert remarks must be understood in context.Pixel count is related to the square of what is normally thought of as resolution.
The crazy thing about language is everyone gets a vote. Marketing departments *ALL OF THEM* count pixels.

https://www.lg.com/us/uhd-4k-t...
https://www.vizio.com/picture-...
https://hisense.com.au/uhd/When someone says a display has twice resolution majority of people in the real world understand it to say display can display twice the number of pixels.
You are free to develop specialized terms or understanding that only apply to specific group or industry yet in terms of the public you are squarely on the losing side.

Re:Pre-installed garbage
One of the things i loathe on modern smart phones is the manufacturer's custom UI and the pre-Insalled garbage on them.
This is, why I usually recommend Android One phones (all current Nokia or Xiaomi Mi), or phones with an experience as close to AOSP as possible, like Motorola or Oneplus
Sony builds nice handsets, with a horrible UI, but they offer their Open Devices program with detailed instructions on how to build AOSP and how to install it
This. The Xiaomi Mi A1 is very good, about $200, stock Android, only thing it doesn't do is NFC. Very pleased with it.

Re:No ePaper display
LCDs are the fatal flaw (IMHO) with every other smartwatch.
If you spend a few minutes searching you'll find there's a half-dozen other watches out there that use an ePaper or eInk display. Check out the Sony FES for example. Unfortunately none of them match the feature set of the Pebble Time.

Re:Best Buy is still a thing?
Exactly -- I got an audio receiver (Sony) at Best Buy (it was within spitting distance of the Amazon price). And, when I realized that that particular brand/model could not properly decode Netflix DD+ audio**, I traded it in for a different (Yamaha) model. And they know that they have some added value by being brick-and-mortar -- their return process was very easy.
Of course, for everything else I tend to go to monoprice or amazon...
** Not my post, but I had the same issue. -
Some context
The product page for the Sony Dash does not really shed any more light on what it is, but the pictures indicate it is a clunky tablet-like device which you can be stood on a table against a backdrop of different home furnishings, mostly in soft focus.
A Sony press release from 2010 says that:
Sony today announced that its new Dash, a Wi-Fi touch screen device that pushes real-time, personalized Internet content to users in their homes or offices
... Featuring a 7-inch color touch screen, Dash uses your existing wireless internet connection to provide a continuous display of your selections from over 1,000 free apps, many provided by chumby industries ...Apparently "Chumby Industries" is a service provider for this sort of device which, according to its own website, had "year-long hiatus sometime relatively recently.
So it looks as if those who stuck with the device, despite an apparent year-long absence of some of the services, suffered a bug at some point which prevented them from using it, and that Sony has released a patch to fix it.

Apparently only affects only one of Sony's Dash models:

Re:Still no actually round screen?
Sony is releasing an interesting smart watch next year: https://first-flight.sony.com/...
It has an analogue face with proper hands. No LCD screen at all. That part has its own battery that will run for 5 years. Then it has a separate smart section with its own battery, rated for five days use. This part has Bluetooth, a notification LED, pedometer and NFC for contactless payments.
If it wasn't so expensive and iOS only I'd love a smart watch like that. Maybe upgrade the pedometer to a heart rate monitor. Give it a year or two and I'm sure I'll get my wish.

Re:Drivers
Given how bad the stock Intel and nVidia drivers make my Vaio Flip 15 function compared to the modified Sony ones, I'm pretty worried about upgrading to Windows 10. Drivers aren't going to be available until November according to Sony - http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/... - because mine came with 8 (not 8.1) preinstalled, even though 8.1 was out at the time.
-
Re:Clearly
They already have a product in the price ballpark of an iPod: the NWZ-A17. No touch screen so the UI isn't as fancy, but it still does high resolution audio playback. http://store.sony.com/64-gb-hi...
If you're looking for a bargain in this space, the FiiO X1 is your player. It's a mere $100, but it has no internal storage so plan on spending another $100 or so on a 128GB Micro SD card. http://www.fiio.net/en/product...

Re:Not sure who to cheer for
Attention: McDonald's. I never eat at your restaurants and never will, but still won't mention a word against you to anyone else if I see them eating your product. If I ever see this, I will become just as evangelistic against you as I am against Sony for wasting my time on their rootkit 10 years ago, as well as having had to deal with their proprietary format crap on just about every piece freakin media and cable connection they produce. I still won't use bluRay. Yes it's more or less ubiquitous now, but every dollar that pays Sony for the license to use the bluRay format is a dollar they can use in their development of the next Memory Stick.
-
Re:Give examples
So because one application that nobody uses, probably has deep hooks into some Sony Vaio bloatware and even has problems viewing files on an external USB drive doesn't install on to a flash drive, that somehow negates all of the software that works fine.
Sorry, but I'm not convinced.

Re:Profit
I'm buying stock in companies that manufacture noise cancellation headphones. Last thing I want is someone in close proximity talking on a phone.
They cancel noise - low frequency noise. They don't cancel voice. In a noisy plane, you can hear people better, especially the higher pitched ones, though every frequency is quieter.
Before buying stock in something like Bose, you should actually buy the headphones and see how they work. Then again, you can't buy those shares anyway.
http://money.cnn.com/2011/04/2...
So your option is investing in Sony and their digital noise canceling headphones. Those I don't own, so maybe they cancel voice too.

Re:Wet Dream
...or a customer who, say, buys a brand new PS3 from Sony's online store..
No, they're not suggesting that Sony upgrade everyone's WiFi for free. They are saying that if you buy a new PS3, it would be great if it came with support for more modern WiFi implementations.

Re:Loved me som PRS-505
I long thought that Sony should have gone enterprise with a very large screen (close to 8 1/2 x 11 as possible) for reading legal documents, documentation, and basically the size that every PDF is aimed at.
-
They still do a reader for the professional market
They still have the Sony DPT-S1, a large format reader intended for the legal and other professional markets. Costly as heck though.
It's a pity they're exiting the business. I much preferred the Sony devices to the Kindle both for the build quality and for its flexibility about formats, which is a must if you provide most of your own reading material instead of purchasing it through Amazon or the Sony ebook store. The remaining alternatives to the Kindle (Kobo and various janky Chinese and Russian devices) routinely fall short in one or the other. For example, the Kobo doesn't have PDF reflow.

Re:Why not limit them to one per customer?
"More to the point, now that Occulus is highly capitalized via its facebook deal, its quite capable of ramping up production to meet demand at its price, BUT, it seems to me occulus dont seem to want its products in wide use yet , probably to protect their reputation whilst its still in development. If they just wanted cash, they could simply produce more."
this is exactly my point. if they wanted to they would take a page from sony http://store.sony.com/wearable-hdtv-2d-3d-virtual-7.1-surround-sound-zid27-HMZT3W/cat-27-catid-3D-Personal-Viewer and sell a vitual 750" screen as seen at 65' away. but they want real games that look nice and are meant for gaming. and sony is going to release a version that can be motion compensated for, as it's tv model is designed to be sit down and do your best to not move, because if you move the image doesn't change and sensitive folks get vertigo. whereas the gaming model is to track and move the image as smoothly as possible with as few vertigo as possible.
the occulus rift is a devkit, people have been asking for 3-d headset displays since digital tech made it possible. those people are not ready to own a rift yet, because it has one major game engine, and decent games take time to mature. i bought planetary annihilation when it was early in development and it was awesome but it is so much harder than a normal rts and the interface is so different that i stopped playing it, i might have enjoyed it better had they had weaker ais or no nukes allowed modes, which maybe it has by now, but playing it from beta was not a plesant experience. saying that the occulus rift should 'let the market decide the price' when games are all crappy and in early alpha development would be almost suicide. i bought the original playstation 1 just for final fantasy and the few rpgs they had all got me mad at buying a ps, cause i had no games i liked. sony almost died to me, but eventually good games came along and made it worth the money. so there is a litlle chicken and egg dillema because in order for people to 'eat the chicken' at a bbq no one can eat the mutant egg of the chicken for breakfast. if you do what philips did with the CDI (computer disc interactive) and release the system to everyone without securing launch titles it will fail. if you launch a system like sony, but promise on paper lots of games, maybe it will work for some, but others will be pissed at the lack of quality of the games that were rushed to fill the void. however what the rift is trying to do is they somehow knew the first chicken would come from that egg, and decided to hatch feed and grow it until it could lay eggs for chickens and once that was successful then they had bbq, and some people could still eat the eggs, of the other chickens.
i think that for as long as i have waited for VR in the home that the occulus and the ps4 both getting head tracking VR is very cool, and i will use whichever one works better. so if occulus or sony delays their head tracking vr units i might even get impatient and get the one that is released, rather than wait on reviews. but only if that model can do 3-d bluray movies (i have 3 3d bluray capable computers if you count my ps3) either with a standard pc or with a ps4. if it doesn't do movies it is dead to me, and games are less important. support for google earth streetview would be very, very interesting.

Beats sound like garbage
Artificially-inflated bass crap. Do yourself a favor a get yourself a pair of real studio reference headphones like the venerable Sony MDR-7509s (for a lot less money too) if you want to hear what your music really sounds like. There's a reason that studios around the globe use these and not fuckin' Beats. Beats are a fashion accessory, not a critical listening device.

Re:Write once?
There's a new (and rather expensive) Sony product: http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/m... that they're saying will be in densities up to 300 GB. From what I've read it looks like a Blu-Ray sized MiniDisc.
I'm not saying these are any better, but there is higher optical densities becoming available. They're targeting high-end video right now in the US markets. I tried to read-up more on this out of curiosity a while back but majority of info in on Sony.jp site site in Japanese. At $6,000 for the drive alone, hopefully there'll be some cheaper alternatives out there. The media prices are much less
.. I see one site with a 300 GB disc for $50.It seems Sony is partnering up with Panasonic. Hopefully something interesting happens with this.
I'd like a backup alternative to DVDs and doesn't seem to be worth the leap to go to Blu-Ray and most tape is too expensive for home use (and/or hard to find).

Re:Phony Optical Disc Archive
You didn't look too hard at the ODA specs. For starters, everyone here is talking AT LEAST 100 megaBYTES per second of bandwidth on and off the media SUSTAINED.
Now look at Phony's ODA: 35-50 megaBITS per second--MAX (it is a disk, after all). Connection is USB-3. Target machines are winblows and mac, no mention of Linux or any kind of server environment at all.
Time to fill a full 1.5TB 12 disk cartridge: 48 hours (2 days) at 50 Mbps, 72 hours (3 days) at 35 Mbps.
It was a joke when it was introduced, and an even bigger joke now: http://hardware.slashdot.org/story/12/04/16/1924248/30-blu-ray-discs-in-a-15tb-minidisc-like-cassette
Not funny enough? Here is more hilarity (the prices): http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/cat-datastorage/cat-opticaldiscarchive/
-
Re:No shit Sherlock
Sony now has a new Optical Disk Archive (ODA) at up to 1.5 TB per disk and they claim they are good for 50 years.
I still lean LTO myself due to it being a more widely-used format with far more vendors participating.
-
Re:Size does matter.
Wacom just introduced something close to that, the Cintiq Companion --- your choice of Windows 8 or Android: http://cintiqcompanion.wacom.com/CintiqCompanion/en/
Press release: http://www.wacom.com/in/en/news/971
Same size as the ModBook Pro which has been out for a while: http://www.modbook.com/modbookpro-specs
Unfortunately, the iPad and Android Tablets pretty much killed off the Tablet PC, so there aren't any new tablets that I'm aware of in the 15--17" size range. There is the Sony Tap 20 if one wants to go larger, but it's not really portable:
http://store.sony.com/c/VAIO-Tap-20-Touchscreen-Computers/en/c/S_J2_SERIES_PAGE
-
Tablet PCs are Better
I like the idea of an all-in-one computer, but making them look like a monitor (with a stand and such) is a waste of the form factor.
Units that are designed to resemble tablets, with no stand or a retractable stand, can be used in more variety than units like this Dell be advertised by the article.
Take a look at Lenovo's Horizon 27 inch or Sony's Vaio Tap 20.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ideacentre-horizon-27-review-all-in-one,3564.html
http://store.sony.com/p/Sony-Desktop,-20-inch,-Tap-20,-VAIO-Touch,-VAIO-Desktop,-Core-i5,-Windows-8,-3rd-gen-Intel,-touch-display,-all-in-one,-touchscreen/en/p/SVJ20217CXW
Both can be laid flat, the Lenovo unit can be angled well by it's strong spring stand from 90 degrees down to 5 degrees of the desk making it comfortable to lean over and use to draw. It also comes with a suite of games that can be played while it's flat, from board games to billiards or air hockey.
I think all-in-ones should be going this direction. The instances where they will be used typically in this form factor will not require their screen site to get larger and their performance is easily enough to handle almost anything typical these days, so the disadvantage of not being able upgrade individual pieces of the hardware (screen or internals) is moot. -
My digital tv works fine without a box
My fancy new 'digital' tv wont work without comcasts boxes around.
Really? My fancy old 'digital' tv http://store.sony.com/p/KDL-V40XBR1/en/p/KDLV40XBR1 has no trouble displaying even Encore movie channels without a Comcast box. Of course it did cost me a few hundred dollars extra but it also has great picture quality.
without comcasts boxes around. You can't even buy one. Rental only.
But you *can* buy a TiVo box that does everything the Comcast box does, and more.
Sigh. People like you who will only consider a solution if it comes from one specific vendor are the cause of the problem, not any part of the solution.

Re:Price Adjustment
Before I switched to a different brand of laptops, I used to buy Sony. I was always able to purchase replacement parts from directly from them and they offered service manuals for each model. I noticed the quality was starting to suffer and the price remained too high so I switched.
It appears they no longer have a parts store but they do refer you to an authorized third party.

Re:After the first $million ...
Sure, however once the speed of the connection from your house to your ISPs PoP gets over a certain speed it stops being a significant factor in the overall user experiance. Other factors including limited bandwidth at the server, bandwidth limitations in the ISPs (both client side and server side) networks, limited speed of your hard drive, human time to select things in the user interface, time for servers to process requests and so-on become the limiting factors on the overall performance.
Gee, I wonder if Sony can possibly come up with a reason why they think multigigabit fiber to the home would be useful?

How, exactly, is it so difficult to find Windows 7
First off, FUCK BUYING OFF THE SHELF SYSTEMS! All these brick and mortars are going to do is sell you a craptastic system at an inflated price. And of COURSE all they'll sell you is Windows 8.
Sager You can still order their products with Win7. The configuration app gives you the option.
MSI MSI laptops still come with Win7. There's a push for Win8, but they come with Win7 by default.
Acer still sells Win7 laptops (just no way on the web to filter for them, so I can't provide a definitive link).
That should be enough to get you started.

Re:Apple irrelevant; Android got swag
The irony in reference to this post is Asus and Sony are now profitable since they dropped Windows.
Since when did either Sony (notice all the laptops with Windows 8 on them) or Asus (note the "ASUS recommends Windows 8" line). So what exactly is supposed to be ironic when both are still selling Windows machines? Maybe you meant "Windows Phone"? But then again, when did either of them sell Windows phones?
Samsung I believe is making out like gangbusters
Yes, Samsung would be the one vendor they were referring to.
ZTE
O really? Steep profits drop adds to ZTE woes
.Huawei doing great.
Huaweii profits dropped 22%. Yeah sounds like they are doing great what with their profits dropping off at huge rates.
Stop spreading this ill informed garbage.
Says the guy spreading the ill-informed garbage.
...oh you mean HTC which is STILL profitable, and makes...you guessed it windows phones.
HTC Profit Falls 79% Amid Competition. Oh and HTC makes more Android phone models than Windows phones for quite some time now.
Oh your making a point about your beloved Apple making lots of profits...I'm afraid Apples pursuit of profits is already hurting Apples market share, which didn't work out well last time...they became Microsofts Bitch. They are already irrelevant.
Yes, their market share has gone down because the market has expanded with tons of shitty Android phones flooding the market not because they are selling less phones and tablets.

Are you saying that you can navigate every EQ zone and find blue without aggroing yellow / reds?

http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/game_updates.vm?date=9/19/2006"We have introduced a new con color, dark blue, which represents a range of blue con NPCs that give a bonus to their experience due to being very close to your level, generally within 5 levels. The concept of a dark blue con NPC has existed in EQ for a while now, but we've decided to change the con system to visually include this range so you can visually see when an NPC falls into this "sweet spot". To properly display a different shade of blue, we've had to reorder the cons a little bit. From trivial to highest con, the colors are now:
- Gray - This creature is trivial to you and will give you no experience for killing it.
- Green - This creature is not much of a threat, but will still give you some experience.
- Blue - This creature is below your level, but high enough level to give you experience.
- Dark Blue - This creature is below your level, but close enough to provide a solid challenge and gives you more experience than normal blue cons.
- White - This creature is the same level as you
- Yellow - This creature is slightly above your level.
- Red - This creature is well above your level."

Re:Great in demos, but...
The HDMI 1.4 specification wasnt even finalized until 2009, so nobody was even considering producing more than 1600p before then, so good luck finding > 1600p content.
And when they moved from NTSC/DVD to HDTV/BluRay, none of that old content was available in HD.... oh wait, it was. For example here is a list of some of the 4K Digital Cinema releases dating back to 2004. Granted, it's probably not that many but the lack of a 4K consumer standard didn't stop them filming in 4K.
-
Re:And it's useless to own....
as there is NO 4K content out there, nor will there be any for a long time.
Here's a list of major motion pictures available in 4K. There's no consumer medium for this yet, but theaters with 4K projectors can show this content.
This presents a new problem for the movie industry. They have no delivery format ready to go, yet YouTube can already handle 4K movies. Netflix can probably upgrade. This kills the movie industry's distribution channel.

Here is a link to the thread at the SOE/EQ2 forum, if you wish to see the SOE responses for yourself. From what I've found so far, I believe the purpose of all of this is to track P2P activity, as well as what files have been downloaded with a P2P client, as well as document it all. I can only imagine what they are going to do with the gathered data.

August 2000, statements by Sony Pictures Entertainment US senior VP Steve Heckler. Seems they weren't fucking around...
"The industry will take whatever steps it needs to protect itself and protect its revenue streams... It will not lose that revenue stream, no matter what... Sony is going to take aggressive steps to stop this. We will develop technology that transcends the individual user. We will firewall Napster at source - we will block it at your cable company. We will block it at your phone company. We will block it at your ISP. We will firewall it at your PC... These strategies are being aggressively pursued because there is simply too much at stake."

Re:The next generation gaming console
Let's put it this way: If Sony did this, I would buy a Sony device without hesitation. (Anyone who knows me, knows that I am saying I would betray my own principles to play with this stuff.)
I have the SONY HMZ-T1 and it is fantastic. I use it with the PC and PS3. I haven't tried connecting a TrackIR but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

$8.13 on amazon.com
Sony calls them "Vertical In-The-Ear Headphones"
worth a try

Sony HMZ-T1 available now
The Sony HMZ-T1 is a little more expensive than this proposed project, it is available now, and with a few tweaks and mods (try this AVS forum) it is a fantastic VR headset. With mods it is very comfortable to wear for long periods of time and the OLED displays are high quality.

for the price sony paid to put a 20GB drive in the initial PS3's they could have put in a 500GB drive instead. That was the stupid choice they made sticking in a notebook drive, today they could easily do a 1TB drive or 1.5 TB for that price
What are you going to do with that much disk? Sony doesn't really want to make it too trivial for you to play copied games on a hacked console. If you had all that disk space you would just use it to store media, and then Sony wouldn't have the opportunity to sell you a hard disk for those purposes (note: please do not buy a hard disk via that link, it is included for illustrative purposes only. I want Sony to die the death of a thousand dogs amen.)

Sony Vaio F Series
My Sony Vaio F1 is a complete workstation replacement with full keyboard and full number pad. i7 quad core, 8GB ram, and 750GB HD. Near top of the line a year ago when I got it. The current F series still has the same keyboard. I highly recommend both the keyboard and the computer.
