Sounds to me like they Driect X coders who don't know how to code for OpenGL properly
And how on earth does that explain it running on PS4... AND PS3? Since when is the PlayStation a directX platform?

Re:You've got to be kidding...
Well the square enix news release here: http://release.square-enix.com/na/2011/08/23_02.html mentions the free onlive coupons and I quote "Purchasers of the PC retail packaged version of DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION will be entitled to a free OnLive digital copy of the game..."

Re:They need to kill FFXIV
I'd love to see them keep the graphics engine
I wouldn't. The engine is a horrible piece of shit.
Ignoring the fact that it's unnecessarily slow, you still have crazy things like shadows not working. It (was) 2010. How the hell do you manage to screw up shadows?! (I should explain: there is a single parallel light source, and all "mobile objects" - that is, things that aren't part of the map - cast a shadow based on that. And not on, say, the light sources in the map. Which leads to crazy things like you being able to cast a shadow onto a lit fire.)
Oh, and then there's the bit where the graphics engine crashes if you Alt-Tab out of the game. Still. In 2011. Everyone else fixed that a decade ago. (And, yes, there's a windowed mode. You can still crash it by doing something similar to an Alt-Tab, like locking the desktop or having a UAC prompt appear.)

Re:Weird decision
You may not have seen any Mickey Mouse cartoons, but I'm sure you've heard of some little things called:
Kingdom Hearts
House of Mouse
Disney on Ice
Epic Mickey
Don't get me wrong, I'm by no means a Disney fanboy (just have young nieces) and what I think they do with it is ridiculous, but to say that they're not still actively producing new works with Mickey himself is uninformed at best.
Now if we could just get them to stop being so douchey about things that they shouldn't be, such as sending a cease and desist to a local Chuck-E-Cheese here for having the employees wear mouse ears. -
Re:It's funny
"Unexplained things happen every so often, which don't really phase me as a seasoned computer user, but would drive my mom bats."
And this is exactly why I ended up with an iPhone.
It started simply enough, I bought a Motorola Q. Worse... Phone... Ever. Crashed often and nothing worked on it because while it ran Windows Mobile the Q didn't have a touchscreen so I'd have to search for special Windows Mobile programs that didn't require touchscreen input and without a Windows Mobile app store that provided to be almost impossible.
This lead me to upgrade to a HTC Mogul, a touchscreen with sliding keyboard running Windows Mobile. That was better but finding good programs that didn't crash was difficult, there was no Windows Mobile store and it wasn't designed for fingers since it used a stylus.
Next came the BlackBerry Curve. Great phone, amazing email access (better than iPhone), but beyond email it didn't really do anything right, tiny buttons to dial with, phone was slow, offered few apps and the decent apps were pretty expensive ($5-$10+) and there were almost no free apps or demos.
Enter the iPhone. Required a carrier switch but that ended up being a good thing since AT&T turned out to be much better than my previous provider. iOS was amazing, no more crashing, phone functionality was much better than Windows Mobile or Blackberry, and navigation was much easier. Tons of great apps for cheap (99 cents) or free, and most of the paid for apps offer free demos. App store allows real user reviews.
Really it's the apps that make the difference with the iPhone. There's currently over 300,000 apps, 63 from EA and even classics like Final Fantasy made by Square Enix. Android just don't have the pull iOS does to bring the big names to the table. I don't care if the iPhone's CPU is 600mhz or 1000mhz, I bought a smartphone for apps, not to brag about my cpu speed.
I have a feeling as soon as the iPhone shows up on Verizon we're going to see a 10% jump or higher. I also think price has a lot to do with it: most the people I know buying Android did so because Android is free while iPhones are $200+, there has never been a free iPhone with contract. But the 3GS is now only $50 so we'll see if that helps, and I know some people are saying "that's the old one, I want the iPhone 4!" but I guess they forgot about the reception issues. I'd buy a 3GS or wait for iPhone 4GS. -
Re:Hoax?
No, the given mail address itself, na.legal@square-enix.com, doesn't exist. The domain square-enix.com exists, of course. What's more, the letter doesn't resemble the one that was received by that other Chrono Trigger project and the number in the letter goes to a reception where people apparently don't know anything about that c&d notice or only know something about it when talking certain people. This is highly suspect, IMHO. Thread at romhacking.net got closed because Chrono Ressurrection team can't come up with a plausible explanation.

Re:Nonsequitor in the summary
Well, if you don't like the actions Square Enix has done, I suggest you send an e-mail to Square Enix and let them know that their actions were not appreciated.
I found this email address on their site, perhaps someone else could locate a more appropriate address to send "fan" mail to.

Re:I have always been a Sony fanboy...
then why arent they releasing it for the wii which has a larger install base world wide then both the ps3 and xbox360 combined?
The Wii is a different enough system that a port probably wouldn't be possible. They'd not only have to rewrite the engine, but they'd have to rework all the graphics, models and sound. (Mostly to fit into smaller memory and bandwidth requirements.)
Since a lot of Wii owners also have a PS3 or Xbox360 (and those that don't are likely casual gamers), the cost of a rewrite wouldn't be justified by the additional potential audience.
Square isn't ignoring the Wii though... "Final Fantasy: My Life as a King" was a debut downloadable WiiWare game and "Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon" was just released.

Re:Square-Enix
Actually, it is "Square Enix" (or more accurately "SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD.") according to their own website.

Re:Sure, Will.
Is this close enough? They're already letting you play all the old FF games, and even updating them in many cases.

Re:$500 is a steal, why are people being so diffic
When I think about getting a game console, I'm only thinking about games.
I was in the lucky position of buying the PS3 as I was building my home entertainment system. In this capacity, I saved a metric ass-ton of money. The PS3 was so crazily cheap compared to the morass of equipment to provide its functionality that it wasn't even a contest. The PS3 is a bad deal right now, and I'm not sure it will recover past the point where it's actually worth it to have it AND my 360. And with no games I'm certainly not going to take that bet right now.
By this measure, the Wii is also a raw deal. Are you willing to go that route, or are you going to trust that Nintendo will suddenly flood the market with a lot more great games. Because their track record on non-handhelds hasn't been any good since like, the SNES. The backwards compatibility is not something that should be dismissed. A lot of really interesting games are still being released for the PS2 in addition to the fairly good (though very sparse) PS3 content. -
Sony owns 8.5% of Square Enix Duh.
Follow this link http://www.square-enix.com/jp/ir/e/stock/stockhol
d er/ and look at entry number four. Sony owns 8.5% of Square Enix. I thought Nintendo had owned a part of Square at one point in time, but I don't recongize any of the others as being either Nintendo or MS related. If MS or Nintendo want to tell/force Square Enix to develop for their consoles, then they might want to buy a large share of that company. -

Re:Enix's Influence
What the heck are you smoking. Square and Enix merged in April 2003. While FFXI was first released on the PS2 in Japan on May 16, 2002. Ranks and Missions were already in the game long before they ever merged.

Re:Some games only look like sequels...
Wha? First off, FFXII is also a direct sequel to a previous game. However, even so, all the FF games are basically identical.
Which previous game is it a sequel to? We are talking about Final Fantasy 12 not Final Fantasy 10-2. The info from Square-Enix doesn't look like and FF world I've seen before.
From the news release:
May 13, 2005 SQUARE ENIX ANNOUNCES FINAL FANTASY® XII RELEASE DATE FOR PLAYSTATION® 2 COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM And Showcases The Look of FINAL FANTASY on PLAYSTATION®3 LOS ANGELES (May 16, 2005) Square Enix Co., Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan, "Square Enix") a leading developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software including two of the world's most popular franchises FINAL FANTASY® and DRAGON QUEST(TM), today announced that FINAL FANTASY XII will be released on the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system in fiscal year 2005 in Japan and fiscal year 2006 in North America. In addition, plans to bring a FINAL FANTASY title to the PLAYSTATION®3, Sony Computer Entertainment's next generation computer entertainment system that is currently in development, are just beyond the horizon. FINAL FANTASY XII is the latest title in the best-selling series. Dynamic rendered movies and high-quality real-time graphics that push the PlayStation 2's performance to the limit create the spectacular world of Ivalice, the setting for this epic story. Deep characters with distinct personalities convey their emotions through gestures and expressions as well as words. All this and a revolutionary battle system that allows seamless transitions between battle and exploration are just some of the many brand new elements and challenges that are packed into this title. "We are extremely pleased to be able to finally announce the release timing for FINAL FANTASY XII and hope that our fans can wait just a little longer, as the development team is working very hard to complete our latest installment," said Yoichi Wada, president of Square Enix. "We were also very happy to showcase a technical demonstration of FINAL FANTSY VII in collaboration with Sony Computer Entertainment. Thanks to the PLAYSTATION 3's powerful Cell processor our acclaimed classic has never looked better." For technological development purposes and in preparation for the development of next generation software, a state-of-the-art technology demonstration video was created and shown at the Sony Computer Entertainment press conference on May 16, 2005, in Los Angeles, California. The video recreated a scene from the opening sequence of FINAL FANTASY VII, the seminal 1997 hit on the PlayStation® game console, by utilizing the next-generation, high-performance processor Cell. The scene was recreated with the PLAYSTATION 3's ultra high-speed data transferring and calculation capabilities. With this technology, a real-time scene with high-end, game-movie quality was successfully created. This means that the movie can be generated in conjunction with the player's movements, as opposed to a pre-rendered movie that plays during a game. FINAL FANTASY XII Story The story of FINAL FANTASY XII takes place in a world called "Ivalice," in an age when magic was commonplace and airships plied the skies, crowding out the heavens. A world of many races, the humes, bangaa, viera and, of course, moogles, all call Ivalice home. War was on the horizon. Seeking to strengthen its base of power, the great Archadian Empire had been invading and subjugating its neighboring kingdoms one by one. The small Kingdom of Dalmasca was one such kingdom. When the occupying Archadian forces established a new consul in Dalmasca's Royal City of Rabanastre, it caught the attention of Vaan, an urchin living on the streets. To Vaan, the Empire was a hated enemy who had taken the life of his brother - his last surviving family member. Vaan hatched a plan to sneak into the castle housing the new consul and unburden him of one or two of his treasures. B -
Re:360 demo
I'm sorry, how are these games really, really good again?
King Kong: amazing graphics (the defacto standard of the industry) and no accurate representation of gameplay. I can download the Unreal3 tech demo if I want to look at yet another pretty picture.
Call of Duty 2: Really now, I can't believe you played the game with graphics that ONLY looked like the source engine. Sheesh, I wouldn't play a game that looks that terrible. And I'm biased because I already played the CoD2 demo on my PC with an un-erring 85fps in "hi-def" resolution. Oh, right, and I spent less on a video card than I did for the XBox 360.
Kameo: I didn't play this game because I'm a fanboy. You know, I should never touch another Square game in my life because they made Ehrgeiz. Come on, you get a chance to touch an omfgitsocoolmommyineed500dollarstoplaysequels-Box and you... Gah, forget it.
And that's totally awesome about the home screen. I sit at my computer ALL day and click the start button to watch it roll out, and then I like, extend the menus. It's awesome. Wait, weren't we talking about a GAME console?
Thanks for your listless review. *sigh* -
Re:blurgh..
SquareEnix certainly seems to believe that FFXI will be on the Xbox 360.
After all, there is always the remote possibility they may have someone "on the inside" feeding them information. -
What about FFXI?
What is it with Slashdot and not covering FFXI? Every time there's a MMORPG wrapup, it almost always gets omitted from the newspost in favor of WOW (understandable), and then far less populated MMOs.
FFXI has the North American Ballista Royale gearing up for team-based PVP tournaments which will eventually be held on a server-versus-server tournament level. A new update will be out in October that will add new zones and expand the functionality of the NPC buddies that were added in one of the recent patches, and a host of other new things. Also, with TGS right around the corner, everyone's expecting the official announcement of the new expansion pack, which will be included on the FFXI release for the Xbox 360. -
Re:FF7 remake
No, However Square-Enix is making several spin-offs of FF7.
Dirge of Cerberus: Is a Devil May Cry style game for the PS2 where you play as Vincent Valentine.
Before Crisis: Is an RPG for mobile phones that has you playing as the Turks. Takes place 6 years before FF7.
Crisis Core: For the PSP. No details on this one. It's rumored to be an action RPG where you play as one of the members of SOLDIER, and Cloud's friend Zach.
Final Fantasy: Advent Children, a movie that takes place 2 years after the last battle with Sephiroth. The site you linked to has pictures from it.
If you haven't seen the trailers for Advent Children, I'd highly recommend checking them out.
http://na.square-enix.com/dvd/ff7ac/
In the trailers section, trailer 2 is the one they just released at the E3. Unfortunately you need flash to play them. :( Honestly I'd have to say it's worth it!
Also during Sony'y E3 press conference Square had a PS3 tech demo of the FF7 CG opening running in real time with better character models than the original CG. It's just a tech demo like the FF8 dance scene they had to show off the PS2 hardware so I wouldn't expect anything to come from it. -
Re:FFXI = WorthlessHell, integrated voice chat would almost make it worthwhile by itself.
Too bad Square-Enix has said that they aren't ever going to implement voice chat.
This is yet another webpage that doesn't bother sticking anchors in the page so I can't like directly to the question, but I can quote it:
(Allakhazam) Kind of a simple question, will SE be implementing a live chat feature for Linkshells or Parties? You know what I mean, the head set thing that can be plugged into a USB so people in the PT or LS can talk to each other rather than type.
(Tanaka)
For XI, there are issues with harassment that require us to track text log for verifying ingame activities so at the moment we have no plans to add this feature. If we were to implement such feature, we would apply it to a title such as Front Mission Online where data is exchanged between a P2P network. We also believe that from a role-playing aspect it doesn't appeal as much, I mean a husky male voice coming out from a Mithra or a Tarutaru or a high pitched voice from a Galka would be quite strange. -
Re:FFXI?
It's on the front page of their website. Stop playing the game and read for a bit.
They're planning on dumping the new xbox players on the existing servers, if you read the article.
It sounds like there will be a graphics update at the same time, which will hopefully be ported to the PC too. -
Re:Dynamic adjustments
Turned out the monsters in that game had stats calculated according to the players stats.
Final Fantasy VIII, by any chance?

Where is Intermix? Here: Intermix is located at 6060 Center Drive, in Los Angeles. (from Contact Us)

Re:Haven't they already "looked to online play"?
Funny I know a lot of people who left WoW for FFXI because WoW bored them to tears.
Funny, I know just the opposite. There's a huge group of WoW players who left FFXI because mindlessly killing crabs got boring after the first 40 days of gameplay.
But there is easily 4000+ people on my server now on at any one time, there where only a little less than 3000 when i started and we already had a server migration where people left to go to a brand new server.
Really? There were 5000+ online when FFXI hit its peak subscriber numbers last year.
Trust me there are well over 1 mill FFXI players.
Trust me, there aren't. If there were, Square would have announced that. They announced 500,000 players before they released the census thingy.
But instead of bragging, SE is actually doing what its supposed to be doing, providing content.
Really? What new content have they provided recently? This? It's nice, but I don't think it'll make me play FFXI.
All they've done recently is implement some new features, making FFXI into 21% the game WoW is instead of 20%. Yay, Square.
What is it with Square fans showing up and posting crap to a story days after it's been posted? I never understand it. The story goes live, almost everyone agrees that Square has started to suck and that FFXI was a crappy game. Days later, Square fans show up and start posting crap, but no one cares, because the thread's dead at that point. I guess they can't stand to be proven wrong, so they just wait until after the thread is dead to post crap so they won't get a response. Well, tough. I'm responding, and you're wrong. -

Re:Square Enix
From what I can tell it seems Squaresoft was by far first among equals in that merger. Final Fantasy this, Final Fantasy that, and yet very little seems to be on the horizon in the world of Dragon Quest/Warrior. The old FF games have been ported seventeen different ways to Sunday but we still haven't seen ports of DQ 5 or 6 in English. Going to the Square-Enix homepage, I don't see anything that looks like something that would have come from Enix, and you really have to dig before you see the phrase "Dragon Warrior." You give us an update to Seiken Densetsu 1 for the GBA SP that manages to break the beauty of the ring menu system but you can't be bothered to finally bring Terranigma to North America? It's not like you even have to translate it...
Squaresoft is alive and well, it's Enix that seems to be floating belly-up. Where's Soul Blazer IV? Can we at least get a Chrono III? -
Re:Say What Now?
I'm surprised no one's given a link to his (English) homepage yet. He's popular enough that Square-Enix's homepage contains it as one of nine navigational links on the top of their page! (His Japanese site is, not surprisingly, far more up to date.)
His site includes an English webpage for the Black Mages with more information, including two official samples (requires Flash).
If you're interested in purchasing the disc, I would highly suggest using Froogle. You can get it for quite a bit cheaper than the $20 people have been linking to.
Now for my brief review:
If you aren't into Final Fantasy and Nobuo Uematsu's music, the disc is nothing special. It sounds like "80's synth" music. Most of the music has no meaning unless you can tie it in with the game when it played, so if you haven't played the games that go along with the music it's nothing special. If you are into Final Fantasy music, though, this disc is excellent.
If you have the complete Final Fantasy soundtrack for every Final Fantasy from I to XI (guilty, excluding X-2), then you should go get this disc. It's worth the money, and you'll enjoy every track. (Except, possibly, Dancing Mad. It's long and practically straight from the game.)
If not - then it's probably not worth it.
(Also, there are previews for the second disc on his Japanese site. Thankfully the site is half-English.
:) Note that they're webpage doesn't return proper MIME types for the Windows Media files if you're using Firefox.) -

The Reason why CG 'Anime' features are 'unkown'...
Because the best CG work from Japan is made by SquareEnix, Konami, Tecmo, and Capcom.
If you seen the Onimusha 3 opening, it is mind blowing. I would glad to see a feature film that uses the cinematography style of the opening. Robot Communications worked on the opening.
No wonder why the article mentioned that Japanese feature film CG work is relatively 'unknown', the best CG people work on video games instead.
