Re:One of the most idiotic stories on /. to date
Huh? The article was written by "Suprnova's admin Sloncek". He is the one who came close to being prosecuted, his computers were confiscated, etc. He is the only one who can give an account of the story, and if he choses to say blah blah and blah blah, there is nothing anyone else can do to fill in those details.
Your remarks would make sense if an original news item was dumbed down for the "general public".
If the guy who got the letter from the prosecutor does not wish to quote verbatim from it, or he thinks it is not relevant, why question it? It's probably not relevant anyway, just some law numbers and dates.
He does provide the original letter (in Slovenian), so read it yourself for the gory details. Or, scroll down for helpful translations below. -

Suprnova's 30 Dec Big Announcement: Exeem?I suppose this is only marginally related to the thread, but...
Over at suprnova.org, they have a message stating that they'll be making an announcement tomorrow, 30 December, at 21:00 GMT. Does anyone have any insight about what it might be? Exeem, perhaps? -
Re:This is getting old...
ummm....The FBI doesn't kick in doors of legitimate businesses. I'm all for free change of ideas and works...as long as the people creating those ideas and works are alright with it. Sites like http://www.downhillbattle.org/ and http://www.craigslist.org/ have the right idea. Sites like http://www.suprnova.org/(rest it's soul) do not.

Suprnova.org now Closed
There had been some talk before, but it looks like now it's happened: suprnova.org as mentioned in the analysis has now announced they're shutting down for good (qualified by an "as we know it").

suprnova.org competitor?
So will this beat the badass video search over at http://www.suprnova.org/
Probably not -
Re:What if...
I've really been wishing that some big name site like the old Sharereactor (for the edonkey network) or now, Suprnova, would move offshore, specifically to the neat little country of Sealand. To make a long story short, Sealand is really only inhabited by one dude, occassionally with a few family members, but they've got a great deal with an ISP, so they have mega-bandwidth.
Also it's in their Constitution that they basically have no copyright laws. No reason for them to give a fuck if foreign nations won't play ball. You can basically pay Sealand a nice chunk of money per month, and have them host whatever you want other than kiddie porn.
If someone were to figure out a way to cover the bandwidth costs (those fat microwave links they've got to the mainland aren't cheap) you could have an interesting site and not worry about silly lawsuits. Not that I'm advocating anything of the sort, of course. -
ATTENTION
Please make sure you do not link to Bittorrent sites here on Slashdot, such as suprnova.org. If you do, then Slashdot will become liable as they'll be linking to a site that links to copyright materials.
Also, if that happens, please make sure you remove all links to Slashdot, or links to sites that link to Slashdot, as you'll also be liable.
P.S. michael, we're sorry you didn't like Blade Trinity, but Triple H was pretty hot, right? -
Re:Why do you keep mentioning SUPRnova damn itJust to clarify, the site he is talking about is this one. What he is trying to say is this: if the bad guys ever find out about it, they might try to do something stupid and most likely illegal such as performing a DDOS. And we really don't want it to go down, since it is a most excellent source for TV shows, movies, games, and music.
I guess the first rule of www.suprnova.org is: don't talk about www.suprnova.org.

How come...
... you can't get Exeem on suprnova? Doesn't it strike you as a bit hypocritcal when no-one on the damn site will stick a tracker up for it?

Serious problems with Exeem
I'm an Exeem beta tester that's been trying to give it a fair shake. I'll probably get banned just for this post, but here's some general details about the new client.
First off, it's in beta testing, but it's not ready for beta. It has some serious isses at the moment. Torrents disappear off the network for no reason is just one of them.
Second, they don't have 5,000 beta testers. They sent out 5,000 serials, but my best guess by looking at the network is that there are less than 1,000 actually testing it and never more than 200 or 300 people running it at the same time. They actually sent out new serials to all the 5,000 beta testers because they didn't have enough people.
Third, it lacks the details. With most BT clients, such as BitTornado and G3 Torrent, you can see all kinds of details about the file you're trying to acquire, how many seeds, portions of seeds, how many complete copies are distributed amongst the peers if there are no seeds. Exeem lacks all of these details.
Fourth, it doesn't use bitTorrent. It's based on bitTorrent, and uses libTorrent, but it's not a torrent. It's their own unique format. Exeem will not be compatible with other BT clients. It's use their client or don't connect. It almost appears to be a Kazaa rip off with bitTorrent features.
Fifth. 'But it's open source? Why can't we just write our own clients?' From everything I can tell, they have no intention of making this an open source project. They're talking about the type of ads they want to put in it.
Sixth: Pr0n. A lot of people like Suprnova.org and other torrent sites because there is no pr0n. Exeem has an adult filter, but 'Adult' is one of the more popular categories for Exeem users at the moment.
Exeem will not replace bitTorrent. The problem I see is that Exeem is being developed by the same guys that run suprnova.org. Whether Exeem ever works or ever becomes popular, will they take down what appears to be the most popular torrent site on the web because of it?
There are more problems with Exeem, but these are the major ones that I see. I'm sure some of the coders of Exeem will be reading this post. Please feel free to tell me where I'm wrong and why.

Suprnova, oh sorry you said without stealing it.

Re:I hope they'll beat this in court somehow.
But somewhere deep down in my brain, I know that there are no political solutions. We should just find a technical solution, and be done with it.
What's that you say you want... a technical solution to the problem of copyright laws?
Here you go! -
Re:Do people still use Kazaa?
suprnova.org takes care of most of it.

sports
one thing that people dont tend to share or "pirate" are sports games. you never see any nba games in any of the suprnova.org or tvtorrents.net websites. wonder why that is though. Occationally you see some old classic games like the 1990 nba all-star game, or contraveral ones like the pistons-pacers game last week - but almost never current regular season games. they dont show phoenix suns games in east coast canada
:(
-
"Next" ??? No kidding !
Scroll down to "TV Shows"
.. And this is just for today .. -
Someone please tell me
What happened to Suprnova.org???
Don't mod this down, or the MPAA will win. -
Speaking of games...
What's the deal with the torrent site, Suprnova.org? It has been down for days now. Anyone have any guesses as to why? I hope this is just a server upgrade.

Re:Something you won't see...
The only way to do that is to produce exact copies of the original CD or DVD, but such copies are a rarity on the P2P networks.
I disagree. Exact DVD copies are all over Emule and Bittorrent. Check out Suprnova. Right now there are two dvd iso torrents on the front page, and countless more on the movies page. It's becoming feasable to send uncompressed DVDs around the internet. Granted this cannot be done with movies that are newly out, but it's pretty scary fron the movie industry's viewpoint that even a casual pirate can reproduce exactly what they're selling - for free. -

BitTorrent
If you're a paying customer, you can grab the file from FilePlanet. Alternatively, you can signup for the WoW beta here, and grab the Official Blizzard Download Client from the signup area.
Since the official Blizzard download client is a marvelous piece of BitTorrent shit (the Blizzard forums are rampant with posts complaining of choked bandwidth and horrible download speeds - I'm personally getting about 6 KB/s down and was putting up 70 KB/s before I choked the upload with a 3rd party program.), does anyone have a torrent file for this?
I did find a torrent on Suprnova, but haven't been able to get a decent connection speed. -
Re:Don't need to wait
And once you've got an account ready and it's downloading time, but you loathe the idea of their craptacular bittorrent client, hit suprnova up for a n actual torrent.
-
Darn those furriners!
In reference to Suprnova "They're doing something flagrantly illegal, but getting away with it because they're offshore," said (Bittorrent creator)Cohen. He is not eager to get into a battle about how his creation is used. "To me, it's all bits," he said."
I've always liked Cohen's attitude, and his transparency about Bittorrent's lack of privacy. I do though wonder if Slovenian law might differ from that of the United States. -
Re:Great legal BT links?
I've found a lot of legal content on this site.
I've been using it for a year without any legal problems. -
Right.
Yes, we all know Mac users pay for all their software, that's why there doesn't exist any Warez bittorrent or any mac-warez on p2p networks and there are absolutely no p2p clients for the mac.
Those GNU/Linux users are just filthy thieves, unlike the honest Mac and especially Windows users as we all know. If it wasn't for GNU/Linux, p2p would not be a problem in today's world.
How about comparing the amount of Warez on an average Windows user's machine to that found on the average GNU/Linux user. I doubt you'd find that the Windows users would have the moral high ground and I don't really see any evidence suggesting that the Mac users would be any better.
Some Linux users actually make the switch because they don't want to use warez, others do it for philosophical reasons. In any case, you're always going to be in a very weak position when it comes to infringing copyright because the vast majority of the software you can use on GNU/Linux is Free.
I very much doubt anyone feeling he doesn't need to pay for software will feel inclined to switch to a free operating system where there will be fewer titles to choose from when he can just as easily copy the latest-and-greatest version of Windows (or OS X as that may be). -
Mod parent up--excellent program
I use AnyDVD for the same purpose.
It just sits transparently in the systray and as far as the OS sees now, your discs are unencrypted and region free, and no more PUOps.
While I have never used dvd-region-free, I have heard its a good program. I know anydvd is great.
Unfortunatly I dont think either are free, unless you make them free -
Re:Don't forget Bittorrent!
Yeah and Suprnova has a ton too but that doesn't mean it's legal (at least here in the States).
Most of those TV episodes don't include commercials or originally aired on extended cable channels like HBO. Those original providers cannot be terribly thrilled about it. -
.torrent
The

Are these torrents legal?
Just looking at the contents on Suprnova makes me immediately think that this stuff has got to be pirated. The other torrent link in the article also looks suspicious too. Do either of these torrents include Creative Commons licenses? I doubt it.
I'd love to download these torrents to see the show, but I'm not sure I should, though saying so on slashdot makes me wonder if I should post as AC.
Is slashdot, as opposed to individual posters on slashdot, actually linking to clearly pirated content? Could this be a legal problem for OSTG? -

Re:BitTorrent an "unauthorised filesharing network
Hmm. I was under the impression that the main use for BitTorrent is to share the load of software downloads. Given that (as far as I know) there is no way to search for a file over BitTorrent (other than finding the appropriate tracker), using it as a Napster-alike would be both impractical and somewhat masochistic.
I think you'll be surprised:
http://www.suprnova.org/
Though if you wish to keep your image of bittorrent as the pure virgin of p2p then I wouldn't follow the link ;) -
um they already are doing it
'Thus, a virtual 'newswiki' where the content is distributed bittorrent using some sort of 'trusted peer' or moderator mechanisms as a filtering/evaluation mechanism. So what is stopping anyone from doing this now? Awareness of the concept, perhaps? Lack of broadband connections? Lack of business models for content producers?"'
isn't this EXACTLY what suprnova is doing?
sure its mostly an illigal "network" but it still substitutes for TV and pushes a hell of a lot of content across it. -
Erm...
"That's why nobody uses it!"
Um... nobody uses it... um... let's see... from suprnova
Known trackers: 161,699 seeded torrents (268,475 total), 2,446,717 seeds & 3,695,090 downloaders (6,141,807 peers), on 1,265 active trackers.
Yeah, because over 6Million uses active at the momeent is nobody. That's why you can download DVD size files in very short periods of time...
The rest of your points are correct, and it's useless for anything that's not currently 'popular' (which can include old stuff like the SW LD rips), that's what real P2P networks are for... but it's GREAT for getting down files FAST. -
I know of an even BETTER service...
There is a really nice site out there that offers movies, TV shows, music, games, and even software, all absolutely FREE! Excellent bandwidth also!
;-) -
Re:Everyone would do well...
All three have been posted to suprnova.org within the last week. Go there and check out the movies section.

old news
The demo has been available for ages here for ages...
It's a much better version too - the only thing you can't do is multiplayer (key required). -
The real 'demo'
Was out a week before the actual game
:)
What's the point of this when I can just go to Suprnova and get it in an hour or so? -
and over here
and over here at suprnova you can download full length/full-screen movies too!
-
GITS2:Innocence available on p2pI downloaded the latest Ghost In The Shell movie from a little-known BitTorrent site yesterday, and after watching it, I was blown away--far better than the original. In fact, I was so blown away that I'll be paying for the theater experience to see it again and pray that there aren't any cellphone fuckers, crying babies, loud talkers, or sticky floors to piss me off.
And to all of you anal-retentive copyright-lovers who are thinking "you don't have the right to 'sample' a movie before deciding if it's worth the money! especially if its precious anime!", I have this to say: "when 90% of everything is crap, i most certainly have the right to screen it, and neither should I have to rent it or see it aired on TV before I decide the artistic value merits my dollars as a reward to make more."

Re:LINKS!!! PLACE THEM HERE!SuprNova.org.
What else do you need?

Get the original LD versions with Bittorrent.
You can find the originals at http://suprnova.org/ (see the Movies section) and get them with Bittorrent. It's also available at gazillion other places. Illegal in some countries, legal in others, but personally I think it's only right (in moral sense) that since I have the original THX release from -97 in VHS I can download this.
I would buy the DVD if it were available, but too bad for Lucasfilm. I'll never touch these new versions that have gone through socialist revisionism (the term that JMS, creator of B5 likes to use).
The release you can get is the "Definitive collection". Made from CAV-Laserdiscs and mastered with *good* comb filter, it also includes commentary track, menus, and there's also the supplemental disc with bonus materials. Anamorphic (altough the LD's are not), and the soundtracks are the original sorround mix, probably taken directly from LD-players digital out.
You can get the original LD's from eBay altough they are getting rare these days...and players even more so.
And on a related note, you can also find the Star Wars holiday special..George didn't get rid of it after all. I'm wondering if we could make a deal to George: Release the original versions on DVD and HD-DVD or Bluray(whenever it comes) and all the Geeks will in exchange destroy Holiday Special from the Internet...
