Well Maybe they are not so happy with SCO in Germany

Of course, the fact that their German stores use SuSE, and now Novell owns that, probably have SCO a little concerned with future cashflow... SCO delenda est!!

My suggestion would be nix (no pun intended) the whole linux angle to this. The kids are going to be learning difficult apps, and having to deal with an operating system that functions differently (think stuff like cut/paste) will just be frustrating.

Around 18 years ago, I was a kid and some of the other kids in my school mocked me for using a "hard-to-learn-and-use" IBM computer instead of a Mac or a IIe. There was a not-so-user-friendly operating system called DOS 3.3. You had to edit files without a graphical environment (you think vi is hard, ever try EDLIN?) and had to configure things like PATH$, PROMPT=, FILES=, in files called config.sys and autoexec.bat. Was it harder to learn on this environment than a Mac? Different maybe, but not harder. Kids are willing to try about anything if you don't tell them it's hard beforehand.

I say let them use Linux at the camp and maybe they'll learn a thing or two about something different. You're right about the speed, I think the OS should be loaded on the hard drives. But give the kids a CD distro like Knoppix , PC Linux OS, Suse Live Eval, or Mandrake Move to take home so they can show their parents what they did at camp.

Who knows, maybe one of those kids will like using the OS and will try to develop something that others will want to use.

I've been using Gentoo's amd64 stuff for a little while on my new Shuttle Box. Things are generally good although there are still a lot of packages that are masked. KDE is also problematic which may be a turn-off for some people.

A colleague just got a new dual-opteron Workstation from Pogo and is running SuSE 9.0 pro for amd64 and is rather happy -- just about everything plays nicely.

Multimedia has significant problems on both systems. No flash player for 64-bit, mplayer and related multimedia requiring 32-bit codecs. Nvidia amd 64 drivers require some patching if they work at all, at least as of last wednesday.

Otherwise quite happy with all of these. Mandrake claims to have multimedia stuff working properly (see above link for info) but wants to eat my partition table so I haven't checked it out yet.

I don't know about XP but SuSE Linux 9.0 can be obtained as a 64bit edition. I wouldn't mind seeing benchmarks on 64bit usage between ExPee and Suse...

A good friend of mine just got started in Linux and chose SuSE Linux. I've been using Redhat 9 since last year, and had never seen SuSE, so it was a lot of fun to set it up together. Once we got past the FTP install (I'd never done that before), it was a dream. I mean it really blew me away. It found his TV tuner card (Winfast 2000 XP Deluxe, I think) automatically and put a link to a tuner application on his desktop. He literally logged in for the first time, double-clicked and was watching TV, color, sound, everything. This was amazing to me, as I spent two weeks trying to get my Audigy 2 and winmodem to work with RH9 way back when, before finally giving up and deciding You Can't Get There From Here.[1]

It's really slick, polished, and the installer (YAST) is the first thing I've ever seen in a Linux distribution that would make me willing to spend money.[2] This weekend I'm going to wipe RH9 and give it a try. They even have a live-eval CD image if you want to try it out first, before giving up HD space.

[1] Eventually fixed, but if I hear "emu10k.o" one more time I'm going into orbit.

How about "let me try it with all goodies included and I'll decide if I want to pay for support, maintenance, training or other professional services "? Is that not how "commercial" distros keep the biz rollin'?

Finding a 64 bit SuSE is easy. This is not the Enterprise Edition, but if you want Enteprise, you will have to pay first.

SuSE 9.0 is supposed to be ready for kernel 2.6 as far as the necessary tool versions are concerned (listed at Kerneltrap).

SuSE keeps unofficial RPMs on their ftp server but will probably wait for their next distro release until they upgrade). Currently the server only lists test kernels. They have done a lot as far as backporting features of the 2.6 kernel are concerned, so the incentives for switching to 2.6 are not as numerous as for other distro users).

Well, I know /. readers do not like SuSE, but anyway... :-)

I gave the previous one a spin and had a few problems - like unexplainable temporary hangs in KDE, sound config problem. Hope this one does better!

I found this with a simple search of Suse's support database. I just skimmed it, but it seems to lay out the whole procedure. I'm sure your distro of choice has a similar page. While I haven't tried this myself, I know people have been doing it with Red Hat and Mandrake for years.

Man I'd love to have a mail server distro. Just run the install, then get a little wizard thing that asks the questions it needs to know to be configured, then boom, you have a mail server.

That's pretty much exactly what SuSE did with their Openexchange server. Instead of attempting to build a product that works on any Linux distribution, they just attached a purpose-specific Linux distribution to it. You don't install this product on top of your out-of-the-box Linux; you instead boot from the CD and you install it all at once.

VMware ESX Server does the same thing.

I looked into switching over to SUSE, but they offer no developer support. This is critical because as an ISV, we need someone we can go to if we run into Linux problems that we can't figure out or that we don't have the experience to solve. We can't possibly sell a product to customers and then have them go to the internet to figure out how to solve their problems

Figured I'd respond to one of your comments as I went through porting some software to Linux on the zSeries this summer. If you are an ISV, SuSE has a lovely technology partner program that gives you what you need - ISO's of all the platforms, developer support, training - for a very reasonable EUR 1580 per year. A fabulous deal even if you only have three or four developers as this is not a 'per box' fee.

The rules for ISV's are not the same as those for 'normal' customers trying to run your apps in production land....
