Eye guess eye could have looked into that before posting: iNewt

Re:Innovation pays
Nothing. What makes it popular is the apple mystic and excellent marketing...
If that was enough, we'd all be watching Apple TV's while jotting notes into our Newtons. Heck, Apple was one of the first Digital Camera manufacturers and had a video game console.
Apple's "mystic and excellent marketing" is clearly not enough to sell any old box. Really, you might want to look into why the iPhone is so popular. I'm sure Palm as we speak is adjusting the Treo line with the lessons learned from the iPhone.
Full disclosure: I'm a prior treo 600 owner. It has a much better keyboard than the iPhone, but for everything else I prefer Apple's little machine.

Sounds like an old TV ad...

Brilliant post.
DRM only hurts Apple, as illustrated by parent. It's always been obvious to me that Apple only implemented DRM into the iTMS because there wouldn't be an iTMS without it. It was a necessary evil. No DRM, no support from the record labels.
Apple has always had a good attitude about Music and fair use. Remember the Rip. Mix. Burn. campaign? It's your music. Burn it on a Mac.

Re:Agreed
Answer me this, when in the modern Mac era has apple ever showed it's computers being used by buisnessmen in ties...
Probably not modern enough, but there is http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/redlightrunner/crow dcontrol.mov and http://www.theapplecollection.com/Collection/Apple Movies/mov/serious_computer.html, not to mention all the Newton ads showing execs on the go. For a more current frame of reference, Apple has http://www.apple.com/macatwork/ on their web site. -
Re:Next big one!!!
I don't think you tried to hard at all.
Your Aquarium iHopper would be the perfect add-on accessory for the MacQuarium owner who wants a little something extra.
Brilliant!

Talkabout DejaVU!!!
I remember seeing in 99 or 2000 a picture of an Apple branded Palm handheld. Here is a write up of an Apple branded Palm called "MacMate". The URL www.macmate.com points to Apple's website. http://www.theapplecollection.com/design/macdesig

Re:Possible Look of iPhone
Screw that ugly thing (although the modular idea is really, REALLY slick). Check this puppy out.
http://www.theapplecollection.com/design/macproto/ beautyshotiphone.html
If Apple came out with a phone that beautiful and had decent service, I'd switch in a heartbeat. With Sprint going through it's merger with Nextel, my Sprint service has gone to complete 5#!+. Not to mention their selection of phones has gone into the crapper (they don't even offer a crackberry anymore!). -

Re:Legally speaking, a stroke of genius by MS
Apple sued, IIRC, emachines for selling PCs that they thought looked too much like the early iMacs... here we are. As it happens, I think it's a not unreasonable trademark/branding beef for Apple to have, but Apple can hardly whine when they're on the recieving end of IP lawsuits, given how happy they are to hand them out when it suits.
Not that will stop the hoards of RDF-weenies from claiming otherwise 8) -
What to do with those slug stickers...?
Damn. I've still got a stack of Intel Inside slug stickers ...
I guess I can't continue to stick them overtop all the Intel Inside plates I run across, so I need some creative ideas as to what I should do with them. Any ideas? -
Ouch
I guess it's time to get my tattoo removed...

HA! I can top that.
I built my motherborad out of GINGERBREAD!
And the computer itself out of wheat bread.
Top that -
Shopping list: Caulk, ...
Sooooo. I guess making an aquarium out of them is out of the question?

Attention World!
I just wanted to be the first to say that MacOS X is officially the coolest OS on the planet. It kicks the butt of config-file-addicted Linux users. It sylishly out-secures FreeBSD puffers. It slices, it dices, it is fast and it is pretty. It will bring UNIX to Joe User in ways that Torvalds
... I'm sure doesn't care about -- but it's happening!
Those of you who have yet to "Switch(tm)" -- consider yourself warned! You have exactly five minutes to get on the cluetrain, or doom yourselves to be stragglers and catchup-playing wannabees until The Next Big Thing... which, judging by history, will be quite some time!
I, Anonymous Coward III, hereby proclaim that every UNIX geek worth his or her bits is soon to be running OS X at home!

Re:It's only a CODE NAME guys
While I agree with you that this is nonsense and should be thrown out of court, I think the cat naming convention has gone beyond code names (which are by definition, supposed to be more on the "under the radar" side). When you begin to market something with a particular name, it becomes, well, it's name (no "code" about it).
Regardless, Tiger Direct are being a BHR (butt head retailer). -
that was the emachines eone."It's been a while since the business with the original iMac ripoff, so my memory might be a bit fuzzy"
That was the emachines eone. Compared to the iMac, it contained standard ports alongside the parallel ports, and built-in floppy (all of which were missing in the iMac), it was a lot faster and had twice as much memory.....and it cost hundreds less. No wonder Apple had to sue it out of existence.

The Aztec
This is exactly the same as when Intel unveiled the Aztec prototypes right after the introduction of the original iMac...

Re:Too bad about the resolutionActually, Apple already has a pocket projector

It looks a great deal better as well.Note: It was a prototype at the time of the article.

Car analogies rarely work, however...I think of Apple as more closely matched to BMW. It's a brand whose primary goal is to build a reliable piece of hardware that is enjoyable to use. It's easy to form an opinion about it, but until you get behind the wheel/screen, you just won't get it Much like BMW, Apple has recently put a lot of effort into aesthetics, and therefore the brand has been making its way into the "luxury" market, while keeping its core goals (quality, enjoyable use) intact.
BMW's aren't the fastest cars on the road, but they're still plenty fast. Anyone with some mechanical skill can turbocharge a Dodge Neon or something and end up with more bang-for-the-buck, but it's just not the same.
...now that that analogy is wearing thin, let me address a couple points...
I'd be surprised if we don't see a PC variant with better specs within a few months. -- Me too! Apple always has a bunch of companies rushing to implement a knock-off of it's current design. (I'm not saying that Apple never takes other peoples ideas, I'm simply saying that when they announce something big/cool, other companies copy it in droves. There are too many examples to list, but here's a few: System7, iPod, Titanium PowerBook, etc.)
Other than the SFF community who are they targeting? Are most Mac/PC users going to give up significant amounts of horsepower to save a couple inches of space? -- I don't think the Mac mini is meant to be the fastest, most upgradable machine they have. In fact, I would speculate that most people buying a Mac mini are buying it as a second computer. I think it has 2 target markets, one of which is more important than the others:- The important one: non-mac users who are flirting with the idea of switching. Maybe they use Macs at work or school, and a PC at home. Perhaps they have an iPod and iTunes, and enjoy the experience, and want iPhoto, iMovie, iEtc. I think this is the critical target group, because this is like training wheels for the switch to Mac. If they like the Mac experience, they may end up switching, or if they don't divorce the PC, at least they could become a long term Apple customer, possibly buying more Apple products in the future. For this group, processor speed isn't all that important. This computer is just to organize their photos, music, and "digital life". Since the price of entry is so low, it's hard for these folks to say no at this point.
- The other group: those who want a net-appliance. Anyone who may have bought a Cobalt Qube is probably eyeing the Mac mini right now. A set-top box, a home router/server, etc. It's good for little projects like that. Again, processor speed isn't as important as it would be in other applications.
...they are going to produce their own set top box or game console... -- Apple has a nasty habbit of coming up with ideas a few years before the market is ripe for it. The video game console is no different: at one point they planned to release the Pippin, which was somewhere between an XBOX and WebTV as far as featureset.... I don't think this ever made it into production. -
Re:White House stats
Aha, I've found it: George Bush's Mac
Its a little tough finding, since searching for George Bush and Macintosh comes up with many spam pages and Macintosh users' Bush-bash blogs....although I did find a neat Bush Potato Head thing. Judging from that, the President would look cooler with a shaved head and a goatee. -
Fins for your Mac since 1984
Ever heard of a Macquarium?

Re:The inside layout is far better for an all-in-o
We almost did have a standing pizzabox. The "boombox" concept for the original LC:
http://www.theapplecollection.com/design/macproto/ 010.html
I could've sworn there was an integrated screen too, but given this was 15 years ago, LCD tech probably wasn't up to par for a sub $1000 color Mac. -
Key chains and Fridge Poetry are nice but.
It looks like the Mac users are one step ahead of the PC folks again. Check out this site. Mac Aquariums Yes folks why settle for XFish when you can have a real live world behind your screen. (Imagine putting a Keyboard in front of one and watching people trying to shutdown your "screensaver".

Aquarium
There are always the classics. Mine is a Mac SE model and has been working flawlessly since 1997.

Mac fish tank
The original, classic broken computer mod is probably still the best place to keep your purple octopus. Various references are available.

Tried but true
There's always the classic-Mac aquarium. See some at The Apple Collection

Re:Pepakura
While origami where no cuts happen (is that the only form that's truly 'origami'? I'm not sure) is more impressive, you reminded me of this site with paper cut out models of Apple gear.
Scrolling down to some of the constructed models shows how cool they can look :)

Just in time for Doom 3! (and Cache/Mirror)
The page is rather slashdotted right now, but I managed to get a glimpse. Looks like this thing is just in time for the Doom 3 mania, with more buttons than you can shake a boomstick at! Looks like quite the excellent Doom 3 controller to me, although an additional toggle joystick would help things more. And there's a Google cache right here. Finally, I also found this prototype design of what looks to be another model -- interesting stuff.

But Apple owns the iPhone domain and they have...
Apple has actually prototyped two phone systems in the past. One was in conjunction with Seimens and was a dock for the Newton.
The other was called The Paladin -
To go with the extra-large keyboard...
The extra-large trackball. If you've ever seen one of these things, it's soccer-ball-sized!

Re:Sacrilege!"And a right-nice little 9" jobbie it would have been too. Why, you could almost read a 640x480 display at two feet away!"
Really? Like 2 feet as in he's sitting in front of his PC? Oh, and it wasn't too long ago when laptops had 9-10" LCDs and people would read them all day long at 640x480 and 800x600.
I agree with the original poster: all the guy did was use a old Mac PC as a case for his PC. I have no clue why he even bothered with the Mac logo on his window, it's like putting a Camaro Z28 emblem on your Civic.
I'm not impressed and don't think this should have even been on
/. There's far more impressive conversions you can do with a old Mac case IMHO.
