The windmills they are planning are very large- 850ft or so (Ref:http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article3022277.ece). The large diameter of the blades means that the period of rotation will be very low, resulting in no chopped up birds. The risk of bird strikes will be similar to that of a similarly tall antenna or building.

The Chinese are behind it
According to ABC News and several other news outlets, authorities have tracked the hacker attacks back to China.
This is not too surprising, since several recent high profile hacker attacks have originated from china targeting various countries around the world. It's nothing new that China is continuing to hack into our top secret and sensitive installations.
In the coming days, you can expect China to adamantly deny any involvment, just as they have when earlier this year the German, UK, Australian and US governments have accused them of hacking into top secret installations.

Re:If nobody bids...
You're kidding right? Google prepared a $4.6 billion bid themselves which just happens to be the benchmark the FCC used as the reserve price. Your crazy if you don't think that AT&T and Verizon are going to fight this tooth and nail. Android is coming and they know it. They have to hold on to the networks themselves or be cut out. No matter how much building an open standards network benefits Google, AT&T and Verizon realize network infrastructure is what's going to make them players in the new game.

Superlorry
This article's timing is very interesting given all the talk about 'superlorries' in the uk press this week. The 'superlorry' is a 60-tonne vehicles, that will fit 60% more goods than the current big trucks in the UK. The government is considering allowing them in the UK, and according to BBC this morning they are currently on test at some small airport. The haulage companies say if approved they will only operate on motorways, but groups are already concerted about these trucks going through small towns, much like this story. Here is an article from the Times: http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/transport/article2943573.ece

Actually United Russia (Putin's Party) has won by 64.1 percent of votes. which is still pretty ridiculous margin.
But Putin at the moment is all too powerful and as a result it is really hard to have completely fair elections.
But then again Fox News has so much influence in the US that it can massively
affect the election outcome there as well. -

It's not common sense, it's lack of money
Guy Hands aims to snuff out excesses that cost EMI £100m a year
Guy Hands, chairman of EMI, has told potential investors the group's former management squandered around 100 million pounds on corporate excesses. Terra Firma, Hands' private equity firm, is expected to make major changes to senior management and transform the culture of a company considered to be stuck in the glory days of the music business. Industry observers say Hands will try to blame previous management for the firm's woes because he has paid over the odds for a business struggling to cope with a dwindling market.

The Kremlin Plays Brutal ChessUnfortunately for Gary Kasparov, the Kremlin plays brutal chess.
According to a report recently issued by Reuters, the leading political candidate representing the liberal anti-Kremlin Yabloko party has been shot by an unknown assailant. The candidate is now in serious condition in a hospital. This attempted assassination caps a year-long effort, by the Kremlin, to rig the parliamentary election on December 2. Under orders from the Kremlin, banks have refused to accept donations from supporters for deposit in the accounts of opposition parties. Owners of assembly halls have canceled contracts allowing opposition politicians to stage rallies. The police have seized the newspapers of opposition parties in a draconian attempt to prevent them from spreading their message.
In early November, the election-monitoring arm of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) declined to send election observers to Russia to monitor the 2007 parliamentary election. This OSCE decision resulted from (1) the Kremlin's refusing to allow more than 70 OSCE observers to enter Russia and (2) the Kremlin's delaying the granting of visas to them. In 2003, the Kremlin had accepted 400 OSCE observers, but after the OSCE condemned the 2003 election for being unfair, many folks in the Kremlin vowed to stymie OSCE's efforts in future elections.

Re:we need socialized medicine - universal healthc
If you have a pre-existing condition, depending on the condition there almost always is a way to find coverage in the US. (Having dealt with asthma, diabetes, cancer, hbp, and smoking in one family member or another.) If the gov't turns you away? You have to fly to another country to get help. This was popular in London when I lived there.
The efficiency of HMO's have already shown us a way... Prevention costs them less money therefore they pay more willingly for preventative care, which is believed to be the driving force behind the better survivability rates in the US. They also ask for increased rates for certain risky behavior i.e., scuba diving, rock-climbing, competitive athletics, smoking, and obesity, but they still provide care, whereas smokers are often refused care for conditions in socialized medical systems. The medical system dares to refuse them care even though they pay more into the system than the average tax-payer.

The HMO's have a vested interest in providing better, more efficient service than gov't care. I don't know about where you live, but competition is alive and well here in Oklahoma between various healthcare providers. I have seen gov't care first hand as a Marine, and later as a expat in the UK. I was not impressed on either occasion.
Also, HMO's are not the only plans or services available. PPO's, EPO's, HDHP's, and plain ol' cash also work for the gainfully employed. For those who are not, Medicaid, and the various state run programs pick up the slack. Do people fall through the cracks? Sure, but would I rather have the ability to pull myself out of the crack without the gov't workers unions and medical workers associations stepping on my head by decrying the use of private physicians? You bet your ass I would.
Universal healthcare is a sucker's bet. Just as sure as Social Security and perpetual motion are sucker's bets. The only difference is that a lot of us will be able to have our suck at the teat before it runs dry, our children will not be so lucky.
Look at the reforms in the Euro nations regarding healthcare. They are finding the burden is too much for the tax system to bear. Over time they have to cut costs (by cutting benefits) or raise taxes.
As for positives? I can pick and choose my doctor without anyone's approval. I pay a pittance more for the privilege. The emergency room shortage due to flooding caused by low income/no income populace? I can get around that by going to an urgent care facility, of which there are 7 within a 3 mile radius. I don't have to win a lottery to get cutting-edge treatment, I can pay, or I can appeal to many avenues of assistance, including test trials for treatments. (One of which saved my father-in-law in the sixties from a near-death asthma attack, his family had no running water at the time and lived 14 people to a two room farmhouse.)
In socialized medical systems they are suffering from shortages in doctor availability because of the low-rates mandated by the gov't. In the US? We have glut of physicians to choose from. Dentistry? Why do Europeans sing about wanting American teeth? (Quite literally, a phrase to that effect was heard by myself in a little pop-club in London.)
By using a bureaucracy to disseminate treatment you are taking the power of choice away from the individual. That mind set is antithetical to the liberal concept of more freedom an -
Re:New ActWhy don't they just sign the "We'll Do Whatever The Fuck We Want Anytime We Want Act" and just get it over with already?
I assume you're joking but the Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill proposed by the British Labour government gave ministers the power to do almost anything except raise extra taxes or create new offences with more than 2 years in jail. Of course there was a robust safety measure - the minister proposing a new measure had to convince himself that it was a good idea.

Re:and this has WHAT to do with peaceHow about the following court findings (thank you Great Britain)
Those court findings? That would be the judgment in which
(from The Times)
the judge said many of the claims made by the film were fully backed up by the weight of science. He identified "four main scientific hypotheses, each of which is very well supported by research published in respected, peer-reviewed journals and accords with the latest conclusions of the IPCC".
In particular, he agreed with the main thrust of Mr Gore's arguments: "That climate change is mainly attributable to man-made emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide ('greenhouse gases')."
The other three main points accepted by the judge were that global temperatures are rising and are likely to continue to rise, that climate change will cause serious damage if left unchecked, and that it is entirely possible for governments and individuals to reduce its impacts.
-
Re:Surprising with recent controversyBritish schools ordered to provide balance when showing the movie.
Did you actually read what the judge said? Or did you only read what Fox News said?
The Times covered this in rather good detail. The parts of the film that were considered unfounded:
* That sea levels could rise seven metres 'in the immediate future'
* That atolls in the Pacific had already been evacuated
* That CO2 levels and temperatures are 'an exact fit' - this, said the judge, overstated the case
* That the drying of Lake Chad, the disappearance of snows on Kilimanjaro, and Hurricane Katrina can be directly attributed to global warming
* That polar bears are known to be drowning as a result of melting ice
* That coral bleaching is due to climate changeNote what the judge did not dispute: he agreed 'that climate change is mainly attributable to man-made emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide ('greenhouse gases').' He further agreed that 'global temperatures are rising and are likely to continue to rise, that climate change will cause serious damage if left unchecked, and that it is entirely possible for governments and individuals to reduce its impacts'.
-
Gore's film banned in UK schools
A little embarrassing that "An Inconvenient Truth" was banned in schools in Britain for its inaccuracies. The judge said it met the criteria for political indoctrination.

Man shot in anti-terrorism raid
Altogether, an estimated 250 police officers took part in the raid, in which Abdul Kahar Kalam was shot in the shoulder. The family had 25,000 pounds in cash in their flat.
Terror raid man is held over "child porn on computer".
In its report on the incident, the Independent Police Complaints Commission said that the policeman who shot Mr Kahar had not acted recklessly or maliciously and should not be prosecuted or disciplined. The report said that forensic analysis had shown that he had accidentally shot Mr Kahar at a range of less than two inches during a confrontation on a dark, narrow half-landing.

The officer, who is a member of an elite firearms unit, was the first of 15 officers into the home. He was wearing a protective suit and gloves, a helmet, ear protectors and a respirator. At the time of the shooting the safety catch on his gun was off. When the gun fired it was in an almost upright position, fastened by a sling and not a normal firing position.
The officer, code-named B6, said that as he went up the stairs in the house he shouted "armed police", but the respirator could have muffled his voice. He reached the half-landing and, the report said, "was aware of two figures approaching at speed. B6 states that he and the two figures came into contact and this caused him to lose his balance and come into contact with the wall." -
Re:Quit sensationalizing everything
Yes, we finished paying it off almost a year ago http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/article1264220.ece. But it's a long time since that debt has been so bad that we couldn't afford good food.

Yes because people who undergo psychotic episodes are never violent. [/sarcasm]

Re:Solution?never used "pirated" software Not within the last 3 years (or since I've become an adult for that matter). I now use open source programs or free software for what I don't want to pay for. If it doesn't exist I either do without or pay for it. never smoked a joint No. I've seen the effects of a psychotic breakdown, and don't feel like undergoing that myself. never drank while under age, No, I was in no rush to drink alcohol and have never drunk more then a glass of a few different alcohols to give it a try. never downloaded a "pirated" song Not within the last 3 years no (or again since becoming an adult for that matter). (or for that matter made a mix tape) Actually I haven't for many years, however when they were made no DRM was circumvented and it was actually before 1998! For an example of how the government can get completely out of control over absolutely nothing, look at those kids in Florida who were arrested for distributing kiddie porn - of themselves! If I'd made sex tapes of myself that might be another story, but I'm not in the habit of doing this (and have yet to have sex with anyone who was).

Re:Wow!I think it's the same in the UK.
Many concerts I've been to have had a note on the ticket saying you accept you might be filmed as part of the crowd.
This article from the Times says Google would probably be legal in the UK doing the city view thing, except:Otherwise he said the company could be in breach of Britain's data protection laws by inadvertently revealing private information such as visits to a brothel or hospital. "They would have to be unlucky," he said. "But I bet somewhere along the line they will be unlucky."

what about US atrocities?
certainly your moral fabric should also recoil in horror if you were to purchase an _american_ laptop.
theres a little police action happening in a small oil-rich country in the middle east that has been shown to have been predicated on fabrication and hubris, clearly against all international law, and has left anywhere between 100,000 and 500,000 dead ( not to mention many more displaced ).
whats more, even long term public figures are publicly acknowledging it was entirely about the oil: link , literally bush and co invaded a sovereign nation in order to take control of that nations natural resources.
now, if you can overlook this little indiscretion, i'm sure you can also manage to overlook one sovereign state ( china ) _not_ intervening in another sovereign states' affairs ( burma ).
just buy the lenovo. -
It has nothing on Dragon Quest
In Japan, they had to pass an act of parliament to prevent DragonQuest games from being released on a week day. Too many people were ditching from work or school to buy and play the game.

Times article: http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/media/article2500469.ece
""A song on iTunes in Britain will set you back 79p, in Europe it is 99 cents, or 69p. In the US, it is 99 cents again, which translated into our money is 50p, although the difference with the States, but not Europe, is that sales tax is excluded and when that is factored in the price is more like 55p. And the pennies add up. Last year the value of music sold at retail in the UK was £1.75 billion, and digital ran at 6 per cent of the total. Lets assume that Apple dominates digital sales and accounts for 4 per cent of the whole market: that represents roughly £43.9 million."" -

It's a screwed company anywayTFA links to another article (from CNNMoney) that says
The company [SpiralFrog] aroused interest last fall after it announced its licensing deals with Universal Music and performing rights organization Broadcast Music Inc. But the company missed its early 2007 launch and instead underwent an executive shuffle that ended with the ouster of then-CEO Robin Kent. [Joe Mohen, SpiralFrog's founder,] has attributed delays to the time-consuming process of obtaining rights from music publishers and other technical issues."
So this company has been working at this for more than a year (which predates Universal's iTunes melt down). A quick search on that widely reported meltdown reveals this from The Times of London:It is unclear why Mr Kent was asked to leave the company, though a source close to the company said that it was because of differences between him and Mr Mohen, whose management style Mr Kent found "unacceptable".
"It was a kangaroo court - there seemed to be no rhyme or reason to it," the source said.
This is not the behavior of a good business that is likely to succeed. -
Health fears lead schools to dismantle wireless
From The Times http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/education/article642575.ece Parents and teachers are forcing some schools to dismantle wireless computer networks amid fears that they could damage childrens health. Professor Sir William Stewart, chairman of the Health Protection Agency, said that evidence of potentially harmful effects of microwave radiation had become more persuasive over the past five years. His report said that while there was a lack of hard information of damage to health, the approach should be precautionary
