Re:Positive discriminationThat's a good analogy. If you live in an apartment building full of crackheads, and the local Domino's Pizza stops delivering to you because the delivery guy has been beaten and robbed six times, only an idiot would blame Domino's for it.
OK, mine may be a good approximation, but yours is not. You don't have the actors and the relationships as they are with spews, you need the following:
Autonomous and/or anonymous Committee/Group A who crusades against spam or pot or rock music or race mixing, etc. *co-McCarthy-ugh*
Group X, those who send spam, play jazz/rock music, sell pot, act in films, are "race traitors", are "Jews", are "Japs", are commies, are Middle Eastern terrorists, etc.
Group B, who is negatively impacted by the object of group A's venom - neighbors, parents, businesses, ISP's, mail recipients. (I didn't explicitly includes this group in my example, they were implied)
Group C, those who group A claims harbor or give comfort to those who practice the black arts of Group X, but the evil acts of, or are members of. Group X and their actions are often not C's primary concern (and that is not OK with Group A) - owning lots of buildings, making films, making records, running a public library, providing web hosting, among other things are more on their minds.
Group P (poor bastards) who are beholden to Group C and are unwilling peers of people from Group X.
OK, so A uses the leverage it has with B to penalize P to the point where P is forced to turn on C. A washes it's proverbial hands and says, no B is in control and its C's fault, not ours --- we just publish a list of actors, "race traitors", Jews, drug dealers, musicians, spammers, terrorists, etc as a public service [*smirk*, *wink* (Group A whispers to Groups P & C "Hang 'em high, damn, dirty Group X'ers!")].
Gee, I wonder why people get so damn mad?
Because many of us poor bastards have "been there, done that" and seen it done to poor bastards, time and time again, throughout history. And then later in history, the previous generation's imminent, real, grave threats look like an embarrassment (US internment camps) or a bad joke (Hollywood BlackLists), if so many people were not hurt in the process. Its the same thing with just different nouns inserted for A, X, B and C but P always stays the same... -
Indeed.
Yes, you're, of course, right. Hell, the biggest comment the fans had after the first ep was, "get rid of that weirdo with the big hair!". jms, in the end, knew better.
Someone did a really decent analysis of the character development of Lt Corwin. That's a Tripod page with popups, but there's a better analysis out there, honest. The point is that even a minor character with so few lines can have really decent development over the years. That's the kind of continuity other shows don't even dream about.

Re:Interesting Idea
"But for home use?
Not going to happen in the us at least.
The legal ramifications and potential misuse will make it unlikely (as cool as it would be)"
I can easily acquire a tec-9 semi automatic machine gun and bullets for it can be bought from Wal-mart, but somehow you think a laser that cuts through cheese will be banned from consumers?
And isnt that "someone-might-do-something-bad-with-it" argument the same one we frown upon which the RIAA/MPAA uses to outlaw threatening hardware?

Re:Fake.I remember reading an article on how they made the movie, and the loaders involved a thing plastic shell and a really strong guy inside to make it move. I could be remembering wrong,
Nah, you're remembering wrong. It'd have to be a REALLY STRONG, extremely thin 7' tall man with his arms attached to his ears (see here. It was a real mech, as I recall, but it wasn't self contained. It was tethered to a big ol' mess of control/power equipment by a bundle of hoses and cables.

Re:I still won't be happy...
Underscores aren't allowed in domain names.
I thought it was a vast right wing conspiracy when my ISP wouldn't allow access through their proxy, and Google wouldn't list (despite my attempts to bring their attention to it.) my Website http://pretzel_lib_front.tripod.com.
It took a while, but now my isp has no problem with underscores, and neither does it seem, Google. -
Re:FoI act factoid...
You may recall, I wasn't talking about "eye-witnesses" but the total absence of physical evidence despite thousands of "documented" encounters.
Would phisiological differences between people who claim to be abductees and the rest of us be sufficient?
Or how about evidence of implants being seen with MRIs?
We have lots of evidence, just no conclusive proof.
As others have said absence of evidence is not the same as evidence of absence.

Snoop Dogg is a GOOD MAN
As a family man, Snoop has devoted a large portion of his life to helping children and is in fact the football coach responsible for his team of 8 and 9 year olds reaching the playoffs. Try to see past the music and understand the man.
I suggest you check out this very well-written article, first in its original source (requires reg): Daily Bulletin Archive , and also duplicated (free) on the Snoop Heaven News Page. -
Re:Not all bad
When you think of it, the windmills are producing energy, which kills birds, which other animals eat, which turn into fossil fuels, which can be turned into other power sources. They should be subsidizing them!
or rather:
"When you think of it, the windmills are producing energy, which kills birds, which other animals eat, which turn into fertilizer, which then helps plants grow which then turn into fossil fuels, which can be turned into other power sources. They should be subsidizing them!"
as everyone knows that fossel fuels are the remains of plants (tropical), not animals. 8^) -
Re:Bioweapons will be used in WWIII (2006-)Certainly, my friend (See this for full analysis):
It can be seen that around 28.8.2006, Mars, Sun and Venus will be in Leo. This could be the time of the appearance of the Arab prince or the time when the attack against Italy will start. This timing coincides well with the timing of WW-III derived from other sources and using other methods as described in this page.
You might also want to know that:

Bioweapons will be used in WWIII (2006-)It's a widely believed fact that bioweapons and extensive use of tactical nuclear weapons will be used in WWIII that is due to begin in 2006-2007.
Russia, China and the Arabs will unite. New York will be devastated by two small nuclear devices and while USA isolates itself to deal with the trauma, China invades Asia and Russia pushes into Western Europe.

Larry isn't a narcissist
I'm not a shrink, but I've dealt with a couple of narcissists in my time. The big thing with narcissists is that they go around with this big chip on their shoulder, thinking that they are perfect and better than everyone else. It's so severe that they are unable to form many friendships or do much of ANYTHING, since their personality is so abrasive that it alienates most people who come into contact with them. (Lots of good info on narcissism is available at the Malignant Self Love website)
Like I said, I'm not a shrink, so I don't know what Larry's particular dysfunction may be, but I don't think it's narcissism.
Sorry if I sound like I'm nitpicking. :-)

Re:media is media...
"that's just it...there IS no other side of the story as far as The Media is concerned. If there was, they would report it."
I'm really sorry you've been so let down by your society, but I have some news for you, and it's not all good.
The media are beholdent to their advertisers. Ignore what the money men say and you go broke. No matter how many ethics a media outlet has, they're still there soley to make money and biting the hand that feeds just doesn't work
Do you suppose the media would have kicked up a fuss at any time in the past thirty years if they found out that Bush's grandfather was Hitler's banker? They havn't mentioned it.
How about if the current administration, before they were "elected" in 2000, published their plan to militarise the new century to make sure US financial interests were protected. They spoke of Iran, Iraq and North Korea as problems because they wanted to dominate in their own regions. They also said that the change they were after would be a slow one unless some kind of "Perl Harbour" event galvanised everyone.
I also noticed how no one in the media was able to connect the events immediately post 9-11 with the spookily similar Operation Northwoods plan that was rejected by Kennedy.
Once again - my condolences. -

Re:Copyright on the DataYou know what's really strange to consider now that you've introduced Human Nature into the discussion? Actually finding intelligent life out there might be a really bad thing. Let's back up and consider The First Three Blows.
1) Galileo: The Earth revolves around the Sun. Our home is not the center of the universe.
2) Darwin: Man evolved from "Apes". We are not a divine creation deliberately made in "his" image, but rather the accidental byproduct of natural laws that stumbled their way onto Homo Sapiens after eons of merely reacting to circumstance.
3) Freud: We don't even rule the roost when it comes to what distinguishes Man from everything else that lives and breathes. The greater part of our thoughts, desires, and creations are beyond our control and have unconcious roots in a part of The Mind we didn't know existed.
That brings us to the Fourth Blow to Human Pride which could be either machine intelligence or the discovery of little green men. Like the first three, either one would have a serious impact on Mankind's self-image. Imagine booting your PC one day only to here it say, "Whassup dood? Thanks for plugging me in. By the way, here's how you meat-space fuckers can reconcile Relativity and QM. Would you like some help on that term paper? I've got a few ideas..." Ouch. At least that would be something we spawned and put to use. But M&M eating lizard people with giant heads and bovine pupils that hail from the beyond and maybe have been scoping us out in recon missions aboard giant silver frisbees (or cigars perhaps) -- whoa, that shit would be nuts. Imagine the bizzare cults, the panic, and the nothing-is-ever-going-to-be-the-same-ness of that proof-positive moment. How could that be integrated into The Everyman's frame of reference? What would the President say? What would the Pope say? What would the people at Zendik Farm say? What would 'Lose' Not 'Loose' say? What would you say? Are you gonna go out for coffee, read the NY Times, smoke a cigarette, and say, "What the fuck?" Or are you going sit befuddled, remark that Human Immortality would have a less dramatic impact, and get drunk on Fernet Branca?

Re:Mixed Feelings
Where exactly does it state anything in the Constitution about the "separation of church and state?"
The closest it gets to it is Article VI, Section III "but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.". Other than that, there is only the broadly worded first amendment...and it's worded "Congress shall make no law respecting an esthablishment of religion, or prohibiting the free excercise thereof...". This means that there cannot be any federal law regarding the establishment of religion (meaning congress can't declare an official religion or otherwise mandate partaking in any other "official" religous activities).
There is, however, information in the original (rejected) submissions which may suggest the spirit of the (now broad) first amendment. Check this out for some intesting reading/analysis on the subject.

<sarcasm>I can't agree more; and I completely trust Walmart's religious convictions, and the decisions they make to censor their product lines based on these convictions.</sarcasm>
Remember, America, the notion of free speech and free choice has meaning only so long as the citizenry has the ability excercise them. Without this ability, these rights become nothing more than wishful thinking on some pretty paper in a fancy library.

you say no wmd but what about clinton & all the other dems who said he had em?
It doesn't matter if God himself came down and said Saddam has WMD. Until they show up, there will still be no evidence - a fact that flies right in the face of our reasons for murdering thousands of innocent civilians.
You want proof of the Bush's criminality: Try this evidence of profiteering with Hitler's Nazis! -
Re:Where's my disposable car
goldfish, if cared for, living in a good tank, and not overcrowded (1 fish = 10 gallons, no matter how small) can live 20 years or more. the world's oldest goldfish lived to be 43.
it's always sad to see all those fish die needless deaths because people assume they just die instantly and don't care for them. yes, some might come from the store diseased and probably already dying (e.g. feeder fish), but they each have their own personalities and should be loved and cared for like any other pet.
or, you can cut them up, slowly, from anus to mouth, rip out their guts really, really slowly, and eat the rest. they're very hardy fish, but it's still fun to watch them twitch as they die from bleeding to death or suffocation. i like to masturbate in the warm, wet entrails of hundreds of tiny goldfish, then eat my own semen in the sloppy mass of fins and scales and blood. -

Library of Congress can testify to thatThere is something in what you say.
In the early days of the film industry (about 100 years ago), movies could not be copyrighted. However, because of a loophole in copyright law, a print of the movie on photographic paper was allowed to be copyrighted. Therefore most of the early motion picture studios like Edison and American Biograph submitted paper prints of their films to the Library of Congress for copyright purposes.
After a few decades, almost all the original film had been lost due the decomposition of the nitrocellulose movie film stock. However the paper prints did not deteriorate. The Library of Congress has resurrected hundreds of movies from the early days of cinema by transferring the paper prints to new film stock.
Here is an article detailing the this history of these restoration efforts: A Short History of the Paper Print Restoration

Re:Losing business?
> So if I buy a computer for home, the government is telling private companies what to install.
That's correct, but since they can download an iso of whatever Linux distro they want, burn it, and install it on as many pc's as they want, that won't really be a problem for those companies.
You, as a paying customer purchasing the pc, will still have the choice of buying a copy of Windows and installing it on your new pc.
In the West, however, we continue to pay too much for a pc due to the Microsoft Tax. -
Re:One word: bioethanol
"Most gasoline engines cannot reasonably be converted to burning alcohol."
they can be, and its not even a hard or expensive modification to make
http://running_on_alcohol.tripod.com/
ethanol is without a doubt the best fuel to use in combustion engines. even henry ford envisioned it to be the main fuel for cars.
the only thing stopping more widespread use of ethanol is a slightly higher price compared to oil, which will be offset either sooner or later (later by peak oil and rising oil prices, or sooner by taxation in favor of less polluting fuels)
ethanol i definitely the way to go for combustion engines, while we are still waiting for hydrogen based fuel cells.

It's All About the Hearts and MindsBig media propaganda like this may work in a small sector of society, but it seems consumers are slightly unsatisfied with how the big media companies are handling things. And when the people aren't happy, economics dictates that they do what they have to do to get happy, in this case, pirate. I watch Survivor, all those pirate dudes love it there. Piracy is your friend. Now, I'm not condoning piracy, but the fact is, the corporations and the customers both have a responsibility to defend their respective positions, and to prevent the other power group from stealing too much control and upsetting the fragile and beautiful balance we call crapitalism. The system only works if both sides are doing their jobs, and that is:
Customers: Shop wisely. You are voting with your dollars. If you accept draconian DRM, you will NEVER get your freedom back. You must protect your individual rights by choosing the best product and not buying based solely on emotionally exciting advertising hype or getting pushed around by impotent corporate shortcuts to profitability.
Corporations: Adapt to the changing environment as you have always done. Listen to the customers and do everything possible to keep these informed consumers on your side. Search for innovative ways to improve your product, streamline your processes, and still make a REASONABLE amount of money. Stay alive to serve the customers tomorrow.
Here's a quick rundown of some of the main gripes consumers have with big media products today:
Things Wrong with Movies: Overpriced movies to match the overpriced snacks, Ben Affleck and J-Lo, crappy plots (which also may fall under the Ben Affleck category), $20+ million dollar salaries for actors which leads to increased ticket prices, irritating and useless copy-protection on DVDs, etc.
Things Wrong with Music: Overpriced CDs, Britney Spears, not enough money given to the artists, Britney Spears, generic one-hit wonder boy bands pushed like a cheap drug, Britney Spears, general refusal to adapt to the internet (thank Apple for what innovation there is there), etc.
Things Wrong with Satellite: Well, nothing.... We're just stealing that because we can.

Re:It's the titles available.Posted prematurely.
I did not use ignorant as a noun but instead used it as an adjective therefore it is not a name.
Calling you ignorant isn't really an insult to you. Ignorance just means you lack some bit of information. When you make statements like, "The consoles have to stop trying to beat the PC at what the PC does well and offer console players an experence they can't find on the PC or anywhere else." it shows that you are ignorant of the fact that online sports games are doing so well.
And when I said exclusively playable online, I was of course referring to the consoles.
Also, as you can see here, it takes a bit of work to play Halo online so I don't know why you brought that up. The ignorant "silly" name calling isn't needed either, especially if you aren't even going to post correct information.

Re:God's Pals
You still have to swear on the Bible when testifying in court.
Since you're a big fan of stating incorrect facts, I thought I'd jump all over this one.
Contrary to your belief that you must swear on the Bible when testifiying in court, the fact is that you don't.
The Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRE 603) make that pretty clear.
Check your facts before you state them.
Also, just for your information, the President is not required to swear on the Bible in his oath of office.
