Would you like some cheese . . .
. . . with all that whine? Seriously, I can only have so much sympathy for anyone who signs a contract with the costs spelled out clearly and then is unprepared when they are expected to pay those costs.
And I believe today's User Friendly comic is apropos: http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=20050109

Why the hell is this flamebait? Hotels normally charge arm-and-leg for the smallest things (espeically the wireless connection and sodas).

Re:Wind maybe?
Anyway, the point is that wind is still the most probable cause, but it's not quite the obvious slam-dunk that it superficially seems.
While wind is the most plausible explanation, it is not the most amusing.

Good! Widen the field!
The more participants in the fray, the better. May the fit survive and the fittest flourish!
As anyone who has watched Open Source software development can attest, the wider field of ideas tried yields the best results.

How is this different than NET?
Recently I was pointed (thanks to http://www.userfriendly.org/) to this site which speaks of New Earth Time (NET) http://newearthtime.net/.
It too is an interesting concept, however I'm not sure any of this would fly. You'd have to get tons of governments on board, and that just isn't going to happen. Hell, try to get them to agree on a single item like warring with other countries...oh wait, that's not too simple.
It would still be hard to get them to do anything that involves change. -

Re:slashdot sucks
This has been a PSA brought to you by Ima Troll.
Take your adolescent whining elsewhere, please. You make forums an unpleasant place to be.
Please see the following links for further information.

The second link may be more within your grasp, as it's not 100% text. It seems people have problems with reading when there aren't any pictures. -

Re:I predict that within 50 years...
I doubt it.
Windows XP will soon be replaced, and I am still not flying. -
The User Friendly cartoon about thatUF Cartoon Pitr gets email saying "This is not Unsolicited Bulk Email", and decides to fixink their leetle red wagon. "What happened to our server?" "It's flooded. And there's an email here that says 'this is not a denial of service attack'".
There are different kinds of high-volume attacks against spammers. Some, like the Artists Against 419 web page just download lots of images from the spammer, burning their bandwidth quotas and their 95%ile billing systems. Some submit requests to the spammer's web forms filling them up with junk or complaints. Some send lots of complaint emails to the ISP. All of those seem perfectly fair, particularly if they're directed at the spammers' web pages which are usually cheap services. And yes, some of them try to take down the machine through various mechanisms, which can be rude.

Re:For someone...
On the topic of Democrats and Republicans and Iraq, I'd like to mention some UserFriendly cartoons from 1998:
30 December 1998: Obliteration of Iraq: "Clinton is bad man!"
22 February 1998: It's this Iraq thing. "Clinton might just go ahead with an attack. The last thing we need is another war on this planet."
America has always had problems with Iraq. It's not just Bush's personal vendetta or the Republican "neocon"s' way to take over the world.
OK, yeah, this is offtopic here; I might repost these links next time Slashdot posts an article about the ongoing war. -

That's because it's the halo game series console, not xbox.

Re:How many more games like this?> My opinion is that playability outlasts graphics. Graphics are an immediately gratifying factor, but in the long term, I think peoeple are sick of the fantasy and or sci-fi genre. So what's next? I dunno
... something completely out of the box.Yeah. As for the comment about how graphics and gameplay draw players in, it's the community that makes them stay...
Today's UserFriendly is a perfect illustration of why, for me, it's the community that drives me away from MMORPGs.
I had more fun in three months of Morrowind out-of-the-box (a near-MMORPG-sized environment My opinion is that playability outlasts graphics. Graphics are an immediately gratifying factor, but in the long term, I think peoeple are sick of the fantasy and or sci-fi genre. So what's next? I dunno

Re:Unamazing AI
simple = good
complex = bad
simple is often better , less cpu usage for A.I. on an X-Box means more cpu for other stuff.....
Computer Science teaches you to seek out "Simple" solutions. and judging by the success of Halo and the Halo Game serries Console it's good enough to be successful!
( and all those people wondering how do i get a job in the games industry - Chris wrote some sort of Map tool for Myth while at University and got noticed by Bungie.....) -
Re:First gaming webcomic
If I'm not mistaken, Penny Arcade was the first to focus on video games pretty much exclusively. A broader range of "geek humor/technology" was covered earlier by User Friendly, which does include some video game humor.
As as you've said you read so many, I certainly hope one is Sluggy Freelance -

Re:Apache is awful.Ever consider contacting a consultant (or high school kid) that knows how to set it up properly. One of the largest XP Themes sites uses a totally non MS server and couldn't really handle the traffic on the same hardware without a non-ms solution.
Unfortunatly, despite your best attempts to slander the apache software, it looks more like pebkac

I agree. They should come up with movies based more on realistic cartoons such as Hackles and User Friendly.

Re:It's getting there.> But I personally have worked as both a telco and a data tech and I think that traditional PBX'es are still more bulletproof than newer VoIP packages. If I'm wrong I'd be happy to hear...
VoIP boxes more often that not, run on traditional OSes . We'll see a switch to reliability when the OS specializes for VoIP . Our office uses Cisco and Ericsson VoIP phones for longdistance calls and it is very reliable (more reliable than the &*#$% MS Exchange email servers).
Essentially most people seems to be running a hard-board Linux install on flash for these VoIP systems - which is IMHO a mistake . There is a reason why IOS router is more stable than a Linux router. Specialization and removal of features irrelavant to current operation .
But I can see a near future when a custom built OS (like MovieOS
Remember all our mobile phones are software and do use digital audio . You don't call them unreliable, do you ?. .. *snigger*?) specializing on VoIP software. Then we'll see the system work . Oh, not to mention a parallel/high-priority network in office to prevent the bittorrent user in the next cubicle from jittering your calls . -
