Re:Simple Fix
How would you start a business, even a small one, with out using money? Do you max out your credit cards and hope your business is successful enough to payoff your credit cards?

Re:The 3DS is ok-ish, but lacks a real selling poi
A bit like when a game developer responds to bad review scores by saying "our game isn't intended for critics".
Point of Parliamentary Procedure: you're liking thinking of Penny Arcade's take on Kevin Smith's defence of Jersey Girl .

Re:Doh!

Kevin Smith says Its about time!
A short commissioned by Jay Leno, Dante and Randal were demanding a flying car in 2002. Watch this if you've never seen it.

Re:On CEOs as seers.
If so, I want...
- My flying car
That's because Dante changed his mind and wouldn't let a German scientist hack off his foot and have his way with him. -
Kevin Smith likes Alexa, so it must be great!
Kevin Smith uses his message board to talk with his fan base, and a few years ago he had an interesting "discussion" regarding Atlanta (now-Boston) DJ Fred Toucher over the film Jersey Girl.
In comparing his website's Alexa numbers to the numbers for Toucher's website, Kevin quotes numbers for both sites, followed by the line "Yeah - I'm not a success" after indicating how many more Alexa users visit his site over Toucher's.
If Alexa is good enough for Kevin Smith, it should be good enough for the rest of us, right?

There must be a new patented drug for it
Apparently this has been around since at least 1995 and there are those lobbying for it to be included in the DSM-IV.
Wonderful. Is there any recent drug patent for treating Internet addiction?
I mean, now there are drugs for treating "social anxiety disorder" -- apparantly now being shy or introverted is a disorder in ther DSM-IV, right? And that disorder requires treatment by expensive prescription drugs (the R&D of which was probably paid for by your tax dollars to boot). That and other so-called "disorders" which suddenly become so prevalent in TV advertising make me wonder if there isn't a pharmaceutical company just around the corner who will be claiming to have the magic pill to cure "internet addiction."
Shy? No big deal. Life would suck if everyone were an extroverted loudmouth.
Depressed? Get over it. Stop sitting around inside in a dark room all day. Go hiking! Skiing! Swimming! Skydiving! Work out!
Addicted to the Internet? Put down the cheetos and mountain dew, go outside! Get out there and Live! Smell the air! Sniff a dog! (and yes, I shamelessly ripped off Kevin Smith's Mallrats on that last part)
Sorry, maybe I'm just cynical. -

So where'd you get the beauty scar tough guy? While I'm all for keeping theatrical releases uncut, I will miss some of the more hilarious editing of the classics.
So where'd you get the beauty scar, tough guy? Eatin' pineapple?
-Scarface (there's even a bonus feature on the collector's DVD about it!)All it took was a phat karate punch!

On a more serious note...
Personally, I think the US' obsession with violence and persecution of sexuality is indicative of a deeper social disease. -

Any small store where the guy behind the counter speaks english as a 3rd language. Of course, if the guy's name is Randal Graves, and he's the clerk for a video store next door, you can send in a 5 year old and get smokes. http://viewaskew.com/news/clerks2/

Kevin Smith's review
http://viewaskew.com/news/sith/
He more or less said that this is the prequel all you whiners and complainers have been waiting for.
He's a big Star Wars fan himself, and he flat out said that it's a damn good movie... darker than Empire Strikes Back... so you know it's good.
-
From what I have read it is dark
-
Re:A must-see for me...but only after researching
I definitely agree that Miller is the master when it comes to Batman. From what I've read, a lot of the story in the movie is the stuff leading up to the beginning of 'Batman: Year One'...which I loved, and apparently the rest of it is by no means 100% faithful to Miller's work. That said, Chris Nolan is apparently a co-writer, and he has definitely proven himself in the past. I'm hopeful.
Hell, I just read Kevin Smith's review of Revenge of the Sith and now I'm a little hopeful about that one too. Don't click that link if you're not prepared for major spoilers. BTW, his verdict is very good, and he describes the film as "dark, dark, dark". -
Re:For those who don't want spoilers...
Yes, the same Kevin Smith who thought "The Phantom Menace", unquestionably the worst of the series, "starts great, ends great, and has great stuff sprinkled in between."
--"I'd rank it right after 'Empire' in a list of fave 'Star Wars' flicks."
--"Is there too much Jar Jar? For a small stretch, yes;"
--"Is the kid bad? I thought he was okay. He certainly wasn't wooden..."
--"I'd like to go on record as saying I dug it. It's a good movie with great moments."
So, yeah, Kevin Smith dug it. Whoop-dee-freaking-doo.
-
Re:Pull up your pants.
In fairness, people who loved Star Wars didn't, generally, like Episodes I and II.
But Kevin Smith DID like them. -
Re:I don't trust him
I respect his geek cred and feel that this review is genuine.
Yes, as genuine as the review where he said how much he liked episode 1. -
Re:His biggest problem with the film
So if this movie is as even nearly as good as K.S. seems to go on about then maybe suffering through the first two will seem less painful.
He praised the other ones as well. Ignore him and perhaps he'll go away. -
Lest we forget, fellow /.ers...
...Smith was a big fan of Episode I (http://www.viewaskew.com/press/menace.html). Plus, Smith apparently really wants a piece of the Star Wars television series George Lucas is developing. As so many others have said, take this review with an extremely small grain of salt.
-
Ignore Smith, he liked the Phantom MenaceUnless you thought TPM was a good movie, Smith's opinion is kinda meaningless. He reviewed TPM and said the following:
Of the film, I can say many things. But the long and short of it is that I liked it - quite a bit. I'd rank it right after 'Empire' in a list of fave 'Star Wars' flicks. It starts great, ends great, and has great stuff sprinkled in between.
From this review.
Hard to believe we were watching the same movie. No wonder he got first look at Lucas' latest offering.
-
Before we take his comments too seriously...
Have a look at what he said about Phantom Menace:
http://viewaskew.com/press/menace.html
A choice quote:
"I'd rank it right after 'Empire' in a list of fave 'Star Wars' flicks".
I wouldn't. -
The Flying Car video
I found a video with Dante and Randal having a discussion about the flying car:
http://www.viewaskew.com/tv/leno/flyingcar.html
Kudos to Kevin Smith for predicting this article. -
Yes.. but what would you do for the flying car?
Dante: All right! I'll go through with the deal. I'll let the German
scientist hack my foot off. Then him and his friends can have their
way with me. All for the flying car.
Randal: You would do it with a bunch of guys just to get a car. I
thought I knew you man.

36.787944117144235!
You can prove mathematically that the best strategy is to look at (approximately) the first 36.787944117144235 people (rounding it to, say, 37 people) and then you should choose the first person from that point on that is 'better' then the previous 37 people.
Waddya know, Kevin Smith was onto something.

Re:I'm very disappointed.
From this forum post by Kevin:
There are gonna be lots of folks expressing disappointment or downright hostility with the idea of this movie. Let 'em vent. If it's all that bad, Xtian will just sweep it off the board. But the last thing I'm interested in is opinions on what I'm doing this early in the process, if at all. The beauty of making that first flick was being able to do it in a vacuum. Granted, I could've kept my mouth shut about it 'til we were done shooting; but with "Clerks X" coming out, it just felt right to share. Regardless - I don't want folks running here with reports of what's being said about the idea of this film at other boards. Don't waste your/my time with the braying of the jackasses. There's not even a movie to bray about yet. Once there is, if you still still feel the need to tell me what some random, knuckle-headed Talk Backer has to say about the finished product, then God bless. But until then, leave it in the locker room.
Well since there are no girls on Slashdot I'll consider this the "locker room".
If it's not terribly related to Clerks other than the cast why can't you come up with some other completely different name for it? Why must it hang on the success of the first one?
How about you do it on a shoestring budget again? You know the studios will pick it up and they will be especially thrilled if they don't have to shell out millions to the pirates.
As for the rest of his comment I will keep quiet (as he asks) until I see the final result. -
From the horse's mouth
Why not go to the source, rather than CNN, on this one.

Budget
> None of his movies lived up to the expectations that naturally came about as a result of the edginess of the original Clerks
I think the budget is the reason. Clerks made it so the talent had to shine through because they had no money. Fans of Kevin Smith will rejoice at this news. If you aren't a Kevin Smith fan, you could quickly become one if you happen to see An Evening With Kevin Smith, where Kevin does hours of Q&A at universities, covering a multitude of topics including his dealings with the religious nut Prince (~Symbol~). Another topic is the strange dealings Kevin had with the creator of one of the Batman movies who kept talking about a huge mechanical spider (who went on to make WWW).
It would be likely much funnier to see "The Passion of the Clerks" stay within the same budget as the first one ($27 k), rather than use up a large studio budget. It's not going to happen, but it would be pretty awesome if they kept the budget low enough to let the talent and quirkiness shine through. -
