Re:uh, label both ends?
I use this stuff:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Velcro-50pk-Rip-Tie-Cable-Ties-Black-Gray/16517608I use it at work, home, in my portable gear, in projects, etc... I used it extensively when I was building a $100K test stand and needed to run bunched of wires and cables before zipping everything down. It's great for building prototypes, and I used quite a few when wiring up my home entertainment system in a "Metro" style rack. It let's me (or my wife) upgrade our gear and our system layout without any fuss. No cutting zip ties, no getting cut on zip ties, no having to go buy more zip ties.

Re:Other options
D-Link MovieNite Streaming Player, DSM310 is $80.
No, it's $38.00:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/D-Link-MovieNite-Streaming-Player-DSM310/20666759$80 > $35...and that's the upper version of the pi. There's a $25 version that has the capability as well.
No, in this case, $38 < $25.
It's not even remotely fair to call the Pi even $35, because that's without power, SD card to boot off of, a case for the board, storage for videos, etc. When you drop down to $25, you LOSE NETWORKING, so you need to add the cost of a USB hub and USB to ethernet (or wifi) adapter as well. In short, the D-Link is a considerably cheaper option. And let's not forget, the $25 model isn't available yet... by the time it is, D-Link's unit could well be quite a bit cheaper.

Re:EV, obviouslyfour CRT monitors
.What are you talking about? Who has one always-active CRT, let alone four?
They use only 25% of the consumption of a 4-TON AC unit
A 4 ton A/C unit could cool a 3,300 sq. ft. house What percentage of the population has such a "typical" mega mansion?
the same power monthly as a single 8000 BTU window air conditioner
OK, about 6.6 amps
So, 6.6 amps times 24 hours = 158.4 amp hours, times 120 volts = 19,000 watts. In Chicago, electricity costs 14.8 cents/kwhour. Total cost $2.81 for electricity.
For a 30mpg car, trip uses 2/3 of a gallon. Say gas costs $4/gal. Total spent: $2.67.
OOPS.
Maybe next time you could give us a LoC metric so we could more easily figure out what your point is.

PR Stupidity
I'd think they'd get a better, more wide-ranging PR boost if they just stuck $50 bills in their magazines instead. Everyone will try to be one of the lucky 1,000 people who gets one, and most will fail to do so.
Really, if you want a low-end Android device, you can get one for damn near nothing. How about an Alcatel Venture from Virgin Mobile for $50... No contract, buy as many as you want, ready to use Android device. Or how about a 7" Tablet for $50 from everybody's favorite retailer?
-
Re:What a concept!
Hey don't knock it if you haven't tried it, one of my friends got tired of being assraped on his contract so went and got this $79 Android prepaid and after he let me play with it for a half an hour?
Its...really not a bad phone actually. It plays music nicely, surfs just fine, videos looked decent, as decent as one can expect on a screen that small, overall I had to say i would have NO problem using that as my day to day smartphone. Hell he even slapped a 32gb Micro-SD into it and he uses it now as his PMP as well as a smartphone, its really not a bad little unit.
Which is why I just don't see what market Firefox is going for, I mean what are they gonna put it on? $10 Tracphones? I've used those things as throwaway phones for vacation so I don't have to give a crap about something happening to it and they REALLY suck when it comes to the CPU, we are talking seriously weak and laggy. Any FF put on something THAT weak is gonna be painful and make FF look bad, and as you and I have both seen anything more expensive Android has covered and already has 200,000+ apps for the 2.x line which is what most of these cheapies run.
Thanks for the tablet link though, I'm gonna have to take a spin over to Wally World and see if they have one in stock. I mean at $50 who cares if you kill it? This looks like a perfect new playtoy.

Re:What a concept!
After a quick look here's a $69 android phone from Wal-Mart. And while I wouldn't expect much from it, I have to mention this $49 tablet that also came up in the search for cheap androids. I mean for $49 you certainly won't be worried about damaging it. You could get one just for the bathroom.

Re:Sorry, you're wrong
I can go to Best Buy, Walmart, Target, or tons of other places an buy an iPad; but right now the Nexus 7 isn't available in stores so it couldn't begin to sell the same numbers.
Fact-checking fail. I bought a Nexus7 just this weekend from my local computer shop. I even got to play with a demo unit before buying. Also,
Walmart appears to carry them as well. Oddly, Bestbuy in the US does not list it, but Bestbuy Canada does. I'll resist speculating on why. Anyway, it absolutely *is* available in stores.Anecdotally, the manager I spoke to when I bought mine said that while they've been getting shipments every week, they pretty much sell out within a few hours of arriving. While there aren't exactly people camped out to get one, it sort of sounds like the only thing limiting sales at the moment is the rate that they can produce the things. I expect they will do just fine on volume.
Your point about profitability is well-taken, though. I realize Google's margin on these things is razor-thin. If Android tablet manufacturers are going to make a long-term go of it, they're going to have to figure out how to get the customers who are in the $500-700 (iPad) market, not just the ones in the $200-250 market.

Your comparison is very disingenuous. Try comparing it to actual products for sale instead of imaginary signs.
At walmart, you can buy a book about retail shopping for deals, including k-mart and target.
Or a book about making money on-line instead of opening a retail store.

Re:As others note here: NOT Safes
True enough, but they are billed as safes by the manufacturer and the sellers. They certainly are presented as the sort of thing no child could ever just pop open. For example, Stack-On Personal 1-Shelf Drawer/Wall Safe with Electronic Lock
Only one "safe" on the Walmart page lists a time, but I suspect that's the fire time not the time to crack.
Even the little lockbox with a luggage style combination lock that weighs under two pounds and "Easily fits into luggage or backpack" calls itself a safe.

Re:already the norm
Wearable computers simply aren't happening. What, your password is in your other pants? About the only rational possibility for them would be some sort of hilariously terrible glasses-equivalent. While that'd make DBZ geeks happy (WHAT DOES THE SCOUTER SAY?!?!?), such an interface would be a disaster from the usability - not to mention, sanity - standpoint.
This.
Just look at how poorly bluetooth does.
Bluetooth headsets have been around for what, at least 10 years now, long before phones were smart, and I still rarely see someone using a bluetooth headset, most people are still holding the phone to their ear, even at times when they shouldn't be like while driving. And at less than $20 they're not expensive, they're just not popular.
So they claim we're all going to have wearable computers, any day now, when they can't even get the average person to use a $20 bluetooth headset? Really?
And let's not even mention that more than half of a smartphone's size is due to the battery to run it. So where does that large battery go on wearable computers? Or are we all going to have to suffer with a ~2 hr battery life?
This google team is so out of touch with reality it's not even funny. Will this technology be available to average consumers someday? Sure. Will it "look unusual and awkward when we view someone holding an object in their hand and looking down at it (in three to five years)"? No. -
Re:To streamline future posts
Within my lifetime, gas has gone from
.23/gal to 4.00/gal. If we are going to repair roads, etc. I suspect that we will need to double taxes. That will mean that we will within a couple of years pay around 6/gal, and I would not be surprised to see us approaching Europe levels of oil prices.First, the roads were built with the current gas taxes. Why would we need to double them to maintain the roads?
OK, let's assume gas is $6.00/gallon.
$30000/6=5000 gallons of gas.
At 20 miles per gallon, that's 100,000 miles, or the typical life of an American made car.
How many miles do these batteries last, anyway?
Doesn't matter, if you are buying one of these to save money, you are making a mistake. If you are buying on of these to save the environment, you'd be better off buying a Honda Civic and spending the $30,000 planting trees or something.
You both forgot the price of electricity. It's not free, even though everyone acts like it is. Tesla only gets 5 miles on a 1-hour charge from a 120 volt outlet putting out 1800 watts (120v x 15a). That's more power than running a 12,000 BTU Window AC for an hour and only getting 5 miles from that and look at how high energy bills spike during the summer.
Electric is cheaper than gas per mile, but whatever you pay now for electricity in the summer with the AC pumping, imagine that bill year-round. -
Great Topic.I used the old version of these from Wal-Mart or Best Buy. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sony-DR-EX12IP-Headphones-for-iPod-and-iPhone-Black/17480439. These are my long time favorites. Fit nice in my big honking ear hole with the white buds. Can by replaceable soft rubber for the ear in various sizes.
I can keep them in for hours. Blocks out the whole world while I am out doing needed evils (like shopping). I cannot really hear people who may want to talk with me as I do not want to talk with them. Very little noise out for other people to hear. I LOVE THESE HEADPHONES.

Re:Treaspassing
If it is the DEA, perhaps they're watching people fill their prescriptions with cheap canadian generics they can't buy in the U.S.
Actually, brand-name prescriptions tend to be cheaper than in Canada than the USA due to govt price controls.
But when it comes to generics, the USA tends to be much cheaper - US pharmacies compete on price to a much greater extent. For example, Walmart even has a long list of generics that it sells for $4. I doubt you would get any generic prescription for less than $10 in Canada.

Re:Gillette Razor Model?
I used to use only Gilette Mach 3. Then I started to get really annoyed with the price. So I started buying the cheapest thing I could find and try progressively more expensive until I found one that worked well. What I settled on was this model, from Schick. At just over a $1 a razor, it's quite a bit cheaper than Mach 3 blades, which are almost $2.50 a piece. Also I find they last at least as long, if not longer. I usually use a razor for a month at a time, and then switch. Sometimes I'll go longer if I'm feeling particularly frugal.

Tmobile and Walmart
Im not sure if they still offer the plan, but Walmart sells the Samsung Exhibit II 4G phone for ~$200. I picked up 2 for me and my girlfriend and they work very well with my tmobile employee account. When I bought these phones Walmart had a prepaid plan that offered 100mins, unlimited text and data for $30 a month. That is/was a helluva deal considering you could get your voip app of choice and effectively turn unlimited data into unlimited minutes.

T-Mo doesn't advertise it on the website because it's a Walmart exclusive deal. Here is all the info you need. However, in practice, you can also activate it using T-Mo's activation kits - it pops up in the list of plans if you do online activation. I've got my kit from Amazon for something like $5.

Re:lol
This bike has carbon fiber forks and rear triangle. Ten years ago, you couldn't touch that for $1,000.
In fact, all of the $500 Walmart bikes are pretty impressive. I bought my bike online (BikesDirect.com) and it's an unbelievably good bike for the money. If you are willing to do eBay, there are lots of full fiber frames between $400 and $1,000. If you work at it a bit, you can definitely get a killer bicycle for much less than you could even a few years ago.

Re:why phase out DVI?
The problem with that is while HDMI to DVI adapters exist, the DVI portion of that does not include analog connectors, which means you will not be able to stack a DVI to VGA adapter on top of that. I've actually tried this - they just don't fit.
Even the connectors that 'convert' HDMI to VGA can't convert digital to analog. Taken from Amazon a comment sums this up nicely,
"What everyone needs to understand here is that you need to research before you buy. This product is not meant to take a digitanl signal and allow you to connect to an analog display, or vica versa. This cable does not do a digital to analog, or analog to digital, converion. Most HDMI devices are going to be digital, while most VGA devices are going to be analog. You cannot connect the two with a cable. You have to actually convert the signal. This cable is meant for the very few devices that can actually output analog from the HDMI connector. This is very rare and you should pretty much always assume your HDMI connection cannot support analog, and your VGA connection cannot support digital.
Do some research on your devices. The manual should tell you what is supported on each connector." http://www.amazon.com/HDMI-VGA-HD15-Male-Cable/dp/B001OLCHJ6
What's needed is a Video Converter, such as this one: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Startech-HDMI2VGA-HDMI-to-VGA-Video-Converter-with-Audio/14860180
As you can see, you're going to spend about $100-$150 for the convenience, and no doubt these devices do not work on copy protected material without down sampling or failing outright. It's probably illegal if it did.

Re:Free2play in games...
I'm not sure how one figuires the cost of a razor is $8. It's a stamped piece of metal and plastic. Probably costs about $0.25 to make. Blades require much more precision than the actual handle. Granted, you are probably still getting ripped off, but I don't think you are getting any less ripped off on the handle than on the blades. Also, which blades only cost $0.25? Mach 3 blades are at least $2.50 a piece, while the cheapest "doesn't tear my face apart" razor I could find was $1.37 each. Actually I found those are quite good value for the money, and actually last quite a while. Gillette Fusion blades cost about $3.70 each.

Re:Movies...
It was easier to estimate the food cost. I couldn't find the theater menu pricing online, and I'm not driving down to the theater to write them down.
The at-home costs are easier.
A 2-liter bottle of soda is $1.25. Adding just a bit of ice, that means we each can have a 40oz cup. So $0.62/ea. In reality, we'd more likely not drink more than a pint glass. With ice, that 2 liter bottle is easily 6 pint glasses full. So that brings the actual consumed price down to $0.21/ea. We'll use the 40oz cup as the example.
Picking an arbitrary popcorn, it's 6 bags for $3.48, or $0.58/ea.
For the home price, the individual food serving would easily be $1.20/ea. Since we're not absolute pigs, we'd probably each have a pint glass of soda, and share a popcorn. That comes to an even $1 for two people, or $0.50/ea. Well, not including tax.
:)I don't go to the movies much at all any more. A while back I did. For 3 of us, I expected to spend $80, and I rarely spent less than that. I'm not even including gas and wear and tear on my car getting to and from the theater.

What a steal!
I'm sure it will all be for the low, low price of $3000 for the 32", $3500 for the 37".
I don't think they should to get involved in this market. Most people already go buy whatever cheap piece of crap Walmart TV they can find. You can get a 32" right now at Walmart.com for $200.
Then again, people have shown their desire to throw money at Apple before...

Everready lithium
Next time you are in your local Mega-lo-mart check out the battery rack for the Everready Ultimate Lithium.
http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_constraint=0&ic=48_0&Find.x=0&Find.y=0&Find=Find&_ta=1&search_query=energizer%20lithium%20batteries&_tt=energizer%20lithium
The 8X on the package art seems a bit optimistic to me, but I personally have some of their first batteries ( gold with a red top ) still in service. I get the idea I do not get anywhere near 8X the Watt-Hr rating of a similiarly sized alkaline, but I get a helluva lot more shelf life from the lithiums.
None of them have leaked.
These are great for remotes, your earthquake kit, and the flashlight you keep in your car that has never worked when you needed it.
Being I work a lot with electronic instruments, all of it gets these cells. Not only will the differential probe set still work after a year in the drawer, there won't be a mess inside. In the event of an emergency, I know which instruments have cells I can raid for the flashlights and radios if the need arises.
Its awful expensive to waste these in toys and high-use items though. Best use the dollar-store alkalines for those.
It puzzles me as to why anyone messes with the old carbon-zinc chemistry anymore, but judging by the battery rack, its still popular. -

Re:I despise sales taxes.
I agree completely that many poor people are just like this. Just look at all the satellite dishes on top of trailers at trailer parks.
But this is totally different from what the AC above is saying, that they "can't afford" a stove, which is BS.
Here's a really nice dual-burner hot plate, for instance, for only $30.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/GE-Dual-Burner-Hot-Plate/12442588I'm sure you can get cheaper single-burner ones for less, and for much much less at Goodwill or Salvation Army. It's pretty hard to get out of a fast-food restaurant for less than maybe $8/meal.

"ou could have dropped it to $199 and sold all your inventory, made twice as much money and not piss off customers. " based on what? WTF do you base 199 would sell out? hmm? fucking nothing, that's what. Idiot.
When I look at their sales, their sales channel, I can see exactly why they chose 99 dollars. No other 99 dollar table sells that fast, and 199 tables are even worse. But no, you don't look at the industry, and your hubris doesn't let you think "hmmm, I wonder why they chose 99 dollars?" no, you just go to 'stupid'.
Are you kidding? There is no other tablet even close to the Touchpad's specs for under $200. Dual core 1.2ghz, 9.7" multi-touch capacitive screen, 16gb, webcam, 802.11a/b/g/n, bluetooth. Closest thing with those specs is a $500 iPad 2.
They're still selling for over $200 on Ebay now even though everyone knows people bought them for $99
$99 was so low that HP is being sued by stockholders for misleading them.

Serious question. Where did you come up with $400? Were you looking for Win7 Pro for businesses? Does your charity really use a domain controller? Otherwise, a 3pack of Win7 Home is $125 Walmart
Also, please elaborate. What has Microsoft removed with respect to charity licenses? A quick google search seems to bring up that Microsoft infact does still have charity licensing. Has the price increased? Number of options decreased? Eligibility?

Re:Doesn't warrant the costEven if it were $20 there is no reason they have to include that cost in all devices, sell the thing as an app on the store that users must purchase to enable the functionality. Simple. And I doubt they'd even pay $20 these days given that you can buy an upconverting DVD player with HDMI and AC-3 for $24 from Walmart. If it were $20 that would leave $4 to manufacturer, ship and profit from the thing which seems rather unlikely.
Also, it's entirely likely the Wii U would have to licence codecs for other reasons anyway (e.g. for sending audio / video to the remote device) so enabling DVD may not be as bad as you think.
